(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Johnson Creek.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Can you hold for a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: (pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wanting to — my boyfriend gave me some numbers to call about getting an abortion. I was wondering if you guys did that.

CLINIC: Yeah. Planned Parenthood does do abortions, but only the clinic — there’s Planned Parenthood has two clinics that do abortion. One is in Appleton and the other one is in Milwaukee.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for the one in Milwaukee?

CLINIC: Yeah. The one in Milwaukee if you call area code 414-271-8047 then you’ll get an answering machine saying Planned Parenthood, and then you just have to listen for the options and if they say, do you want to make an abortion appointment press such and such a number.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’m just really worried because — like well I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope. There is a parental consent law right now. There is a parental consent law that goes in — that is in effect. And in order for you at age 14 to be able to have an abortion you do have to have parental consent. Now parental consent can mean either your parents or it can mean anyone — an aunt, an uncle, a brother, a sister, a grandparent, anyone 25 years of age or over. But it cannot be your boyfriend.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t have anybody here but my parents, and if they found out I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Okay. Then your other option would be to come to a Planned Parenthood and get something called — you can go and talk to the public defender. If you go to, you know, to the courts, though the court system, a public defender can find you eligible to get an abortion without parental consent. But you do have to go through talking to a district attorney in your county.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It doesn’t cost anything. It’s free.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so if I go to them I would be able to —

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Marytown (sp).

CLINIC: You live in where?

CALLER: Marytown.

CLINIC: And where is that? Is that close to, what, Madison or close to Milwaukee?

CALLER: I think it’s closer to Appleton I think.

CLINIC: It’s closer to Appleton? Okay. So why don’t I give you the number to the abortion clinic in Appleton and they’ll be able to help you out with who you call for judicial bypass. That’s what you ask them for. It’s called a judicial bypass where you’re a minor who’s looking to get an abortion and you don’t have any — you know, any family members that qualify to give you consent. So you want the courts to be able to help you. But, so call Planned Parenthood in Appleton and they’ll be able to help you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And the Planned Parenthood is located at Appleton North. It’s at 3800 North Gillette (sp) Street. And their number is area code 920-731-9534.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just really worried about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared. Could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see?

CLINIC: So you don’t even know if you’re pregnant yet?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you can come in here however. I mean, we do the same pregnancy test as they would like with the home pregnancy test. So have you done even like a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No. I just thought that I would rather come in there and have one of — someone else do it so that I knew it was right.

CLINIC: Sure. You could come in here. We could do it.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my friend just lives there in Johnson Creek, so that’s why I was wanting to go to where you’re at. So.

CLINIC: That’s fine. We can do a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. But my boyfriend said that he was going to pay for everything. So would have to — we just don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No one would have to know. Can you hold on?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. No. He doesn’t have to sign anything.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: I mean, we just don’t want to have to worry about this anymore.

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I could think of any other questions could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Maria.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Amy. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: The closest abortion clinic is in Appleton.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yeah. Hold on one moment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no, not yet.

CLINIC: Not yet?

CALLER: Uh-uh. I’m just really scared because like well I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Have you done a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No?

CALLER: I didn’t know that those were right.

CLINIC: Well, they’re as accurate as the one that I can do here as one the doctor could do — other than a blood test.

CALLER: Oh. It’s just — the thing is, I’m really worried about all this because like, well I’m going to be 14 in March and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: The state of Wisconsin requires written permission from an adult relative, 25 or older.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents though? I don’t know anyone else besides him that’s older than that.

CLINIC: Well, you could go to a judge and we could help you get that set up.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, to go to the judge to have a judicial bypass is free because it would go through the county. But for me to do, for me to sign you up and everything I’d have to run the pregnancy test and have a positive pregnancy test here in order to do that.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: I think it’s probably going to be like $50 or $60. You also need to know that the state of Wisconsin laws, that is such that you have to have at least 24 hours from a counseling visit at the abortion clinic to the actual procedure. And they only do procedures in Appleton during the week.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. It’s just, would he have to — he just doesn’t want to have anybody to tell anybody like he doesn’t want my parents to find out. So —

CLINIC: Well, the reason he doesn’t want your parents to find out is because they’ll probably press charges against him. And even if they don’t —

CALLER: Why? What for?

CLINIC: Well, even at — for statutory rape because he’s —

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: No. No. I’m not saying he is. But because he’s over the age of 18 and you’re only 14, it’s against the law for him to be having intercourse with you no matter what. And even if they don’t press charges, the state of Wisconsin might.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: He could go to jail.

CALLER: Well, who would tell on him?

CLINIC: I certainly wouldn’t. But — I’m not saying anybody really would.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But it is against the law. I mean, if you — he probably doesn’t want you to tell your parents because they could press charges.

CALLER: He said it was — he didn’t want me to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Well, that’s — you know, that could be the other thing. He doesn’t want you in trouble.

CALLER: Well, could we come in there together if, to get a pregnancy test, because he would be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Yes. We can schedule a pregnancy test for you.

CALLER: Oh. But would he get in trouble?

CLINIC: I’m not going to turn him in. The nurse practitioner that works here isn’t going to turn him in. She’s probably going to lecture him a little bit.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: He’ll probably hear a little bit of lecturing, but I certainly wouldn’t turn him in. And neither would she.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But, you know, if you have — do you have like a cousin or aunt or uncle or somebody that would take you to the abortionist over the age of 25?

CALLER: No, I don’t have any relatives up here.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So. All my family lives in Texas, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Are your parents here?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I mean, I live with my parents, but I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: Right. Let me look at the schedule for today and then I can tell you when I can have you come in.

CALLER: Well, if I went to the judge would I Have to tell him about my boyfriend though?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know about how — I’ve never had to do a judicial bypass before. But the nurse practitioner has had to do that before. She would know more about that than I do.

CALLER: Do you know if they ever say no?

CLINIC: No. As far as I know they’ve never said no.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I mean, if your age is — if you’re 14, he’s going to probably guarantee pretty much do it because you’re so young. If you told the judge that your boyfriend’s 25, he may —

CALLER: He’s only 22.

CLINIC: Or 22, he may turn him in.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? If you two were married, he could sign off for it. But you’re not married, and you can’t get married in the state of Wisconsin without your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Do your parents know that you’re dating him?

CALLER: Well, yeah. They just don’t really like him. They don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Right. You have school until 3:00?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: You’re homeschooled?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. The office opens at 11:00. When do you want to come in then? What we have open is an 11:45, a 12:45 or anything from 1:00 until 2:00 in 15-minute increments, and then we have like a 2:45 and a 3:00. When could he bring you?

CALLER: Probably at lunchtime. Is the 12:45 one all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. The main reason why I’m wondering about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st. And if I came in for a pregnancy test is there any way that I wouldn’t be pregnant, you think?

CLINIC: There’s a possibility. You’re still young. It’s like your system is probably still growing. And it’s possible that you’re going to have abnormal periods for several years before it regulates out. And it’s possible that all of a sudden it can just quit. You know, if you’ve had a normal period for a year and then all of a sudden it will just quit for a few months, that’s pretty normal at your young age. I’m not guaranteeing that’s what’s going on. What we can do is, we can run a pregnancy test. Have you guys used any kind of birth control whatsoever at all?

CALLER: No. That’s what I was going to ask you next, if we could get on birth control if I wasn’t pregnant.

CLINIC: If the pregnancy comes back negative, we can look at getting you on something to start, like the pills is usually the pretty easiest one to start.

CALLER: Okay. But nobody would have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Not unless you told them.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Because everything remains confidential here. It would be like going in Marshfields clinic into a doctor’s office. Okay? Let’s see. What’s your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith.

CLINIC: SMITH?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Is that with a K or a C?

CALLER: A C-H.

CLINIC: It’s T-I-N-E?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Compared — like looking to see if there’s any Christine Smiths in the system. (laughs) Have you ever been seen in a Planned Parenthood in the state of Wisconsin before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your street address?

CALLER: Oh. Well, is it all right if I give you like my boyfriend’s?

CLINIC: You can give me his.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just don’t know it right now, but could I call you back and —

CLINIC: Well, no, you can just give it to me when you’re here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: That’s some of the information that we ask for. Do you live in Marshfield here?

CALLER: I live in Stratford.

CLINIC: What’s the zip code in Stratford?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here. So.

CLINIC: All right. Do you have a phone number that we can reach you at?

CALLER: My boyfriend has a cell phone that he just got, but I don’t know the number for that either.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I give you that this afternoon?

CLINIC: You can give me that information when you come in.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what else would you need if I, when I come in?

CLINIC: What we need — well, you probably don’t work at all.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: And you live with your parents?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Basically what we need is a billing address, some place we can send a bill if he doesn’t pay all of it today.

CALLER: Well, he said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Right. Some way —

CALLER: How much would it be today?

CLINIC: I’m going to figure it’s going to be about $50 bucks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just off the top of my head, all right? It’s probably going to be less than that, but that’s just a guess, depending upon how much we have to do. And if you’re not pregnant then we can put you on the pill, and then you can take a couple packs of pills and —

CALLER: Well, if I needed the abortion, how much would that be?

CLINIC: Needed to have what?

CALLER: The abortion, like if I was pregnant and I was going to get an abortion? How much is an abortion?

CLINIC: To give you a good guess, about $400.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I’m not — you know, I don’t have the fees here in this office for the abortions because we’re just a family planning clinic. But I can give you all that — you know, I will give you the number to call Appleton.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s an 800 number that you can call there, and they could tell you how much it would be.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: For that kind of thing.

CALLER: So if he brought $50 today no one would have to be billed or anything?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we still need a billing address. They do not send any mail to anybody unless we say yes, but we need to have a billing address. We also need —

CALLER: Is it all right if I give you my boyfriend’s address?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Give me his address, and then I also need a phone number, some way to reach you, either his home phone number or his cell phone number, whatever. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay. So is it all right if I call you back with that then?

CLINIC: You can give me that when you come in.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. So 12:45 today?

CLINIC: Yeah. We’ll see you at 12:45 for a pregnancy test and then we’ll go from there on what other services you may or may not need.

CALLER: Okay. Who would I talk to when I get there?

CLINIC: Just check in at the front desk here. When you walk in the door there’s a window. Just check in by the window. Who is ever here will help you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? It’s usually Nancy, but whoever is by the window will help you.

CALLER: Okay. And what was your name again?

CLINIC: I’m Amy.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I’m the medical assistant, so I’ll be the one running the pregnancy test and talking to the two of you when you’re here and then determining what we need to do and how we’re going to do it. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure that no one would have to know that I’m there?

CLINIC: Nobody will know that you are here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Unless you tell them.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: And I just want you to know, I do encourage all of my young patients to tell parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I really do. I feel that it’s the best to be open and honest with them. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I’m not going to go and call them and tell them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s not my place, but I do encourage my patients to talk to their parents, especially if they’re pregnant and they’re seeking an abortion.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right? Well, see you when you get here at 12:45.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, West End.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do not perform abortions at this clinic, but I can give you two telephone numbers for where they are performed.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, one moment.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: (pause) Okay, do you have a pen and paper handy?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you prefer Milwaukee or Appleton?

CALLER: Probably Appleton.

CLINIC: Appleton? Okay. Telephone number is 920-731-9534,

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I go there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Sure. They can — I mean, have you taken the home pregnancy test already?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since December 14.

CLINIC: Okay. Taking a home pregnancy test would probably be your first thing that you want to do. If that’s positive and you want to have an abortion, then you call them.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I would just rather come see you guys because my friend said that you guys were a better place to go. So.

CLINIC: Okay. How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: My friend also told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could you guys — or could he just sign whatever and you wouldn’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: No, he has to be — it has to be a parent, a brother, sister, aunt and uncle or grandparent over the age of 25.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Or there is another way you can do it. You can go through the court system and be granted what they call a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: A judicial bypass is where you go and sit in front of a judge and a judge deems whether or not you’re responsible enough to make a decision to have an abortion. And it’s done through the Milwaukee County Court System.

CALLER: Well, do I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: Yep. They hook you up with a public defender that takes care of those things.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: That I do not know.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know if the judge ever says no?

CLINIC: They can, yes. I mean, I can’t guarantee you that he’s going to grant you, that he’s going to say yes. I mean, it depends on the individual, depends on the situation, depends on all those things.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I came in for a pregnancy test, like I would want my boyfriend to be there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah. That would be fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. We’re protected by Wisconsin state statute that states you have the right to receive birth control without your parents knowing about it.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just — my boyfriend and I talked about it, and we just don’t want anybody to know about us. Would you guys have to say anything or have him sign anything?

CLINIC: No. You’re — all your services are confidential here.

CALLER: All right. Well, would it be all right — like since — it’s just I don’t drive yet. Would it be all right if he picked up the birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Yeah. He can pick up your pills, but you’d have to come in and have an exam before we can even give you birth control pills.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to set up an appointment for something like that?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see, but yeah I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you call and check with him first and then give us a call back. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Let me call him and then I’ll call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Jodie. I’m the nurse.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay, sure. Um-hmm. Bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Lincoln Plaza. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Our clinic does not. It’s the Jackson Street location. Do you want that phone number, ma’am?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one moment. I’ve got to get my little cheat-sheet of phone numbers. Okay. Their phone number is 276-8777.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s a 414.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just really worried because like my — like I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. Now are you 18?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If you are under the age of 18 to get an AB you need to have someone that’s 25 or older, like do you have a sibling at all that’s 25 or older?

CALLER: No. I’m the oldest.

CLINIC: Do you have an aunt that you can talk to?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You’ll have to do something. You might be able to get like a court bypass. Can you hold on one moment? I’ll get you some information?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on. Okay, ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay, what you need, what you’re probably going to want to do is something called — you have no other family members that you can confide in with this?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re going to want to do what’s known as a court bypass, okay?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And basically you file a petition to wave consent. And then basically at the public defender’s office at no charge they will act as your advocate and will accompany you to see a judge in a confidential meeting. The judge must determine that you are like mature and well-informed about the decision and that the abortion is in your best interest.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What you may want to do is when you call them and ask them about this stuff — otherwise, what you can do is — do you live near here? Could you maybe walk? Could your boyfriend drive you here? Because we could give you like this little packet. We could just give you a packet. Oh, wait. Here. I have a phone number for the public defender’s office. Okay?

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. I’ll give you first the public defender’s office. And their phone number is, 266-1210. And then for like other info you’ll probably have to call the Children’s Court Center. This will be the second number that you’ll probably have to call. 257-7736.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Now if you want, we do have a little bit of a packet if you want to stop in and get that. Otherwise, if you call those phone numbers they’ll probably be able to really help you out about what you need to do.

CALLER: Do you know if the judge ever says no?

CLINIC: Most of the time the judge does not say no. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a time where a judge says no.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Come here for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah. I’m just really scared because like my period — I haven’t had my period since like December 14.

CLINIC: Are you — okay. Have you already taken a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You have not taken — okay.

CALLER: I didn’t know if those are right.

CLINIC: Those are actually fairly accurate. You could probably go to Walgreen’s and get one for like $15. You’re more than welcome to come here, although there is a charge —

CALLER: I would rather do that.

CLINIC: You can. Okay. There is a charge for a pregnancy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: He said he would pay. Okay, because the pregnancy tests here — it’s right around $35, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. So do you want to make an appointment then?

CALLER: Well, I guess.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on.

CALLER: I don’t know — but my boyfriend and I talked about it, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to say anything?

CLINIC: Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out like that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, you can get birth control here. There’s also a cost to get annual exam and to get on the pill, but did you say — would your boyfriend be willing to pay for that too?

CALLER: Yeah. Yeah. We just don’t want to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Okay. The charge for the exam because you’re under 18 there is a discount. It’s going to be around $75 or so. Pills for you are $12.25 a month.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Again, everything here is confidential. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, he actually has a job. Would it cost anymore then if he was paying for it?

CLINIC: Oh, no, no. Because you’re under 18. It’s just a certain charge because when you’re under 18 there’s a discount.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want — you want to make an appointment first for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on one moment. (pause) Can you come in at 12:15?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call my boyfriend, but I think he could take me at his lunch break then. So.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t — all right. Do you want to give me — how about if I just get your first and last name?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you’re sure — like my boyfriend and I don’t want us to — don’t want anyone to know about us. And you’re sure that you guys wouldn’t say anything?

CLINIC: Everything here is confidential, ma’am.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t I get your first and last name, and then if he can’t give us a call back, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we can set up an appointment for you on Monday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, so what’s your first name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay, and your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Smith. And date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: 3/19/88. Okay. Well, why don’t you give him a calla nd see if he can give you a ride, and if he can’t just give us a call back and we’ll set up an appointment for you on Monday. Okay?

CALLER: All right. So what time do I need to be there, like 12:15?

CLINIC: 12:15.

CALLER: All right. Well, so should I call you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Amber.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Northwest.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Oh, I can give you that number to our abortion clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 276-8777.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just scared because like I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend told me that since I’ll be like in 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Could he — is he old enough to take care of all that and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. He might be. I’m not sure. Hold on a second.

All right. Okay, he wouldn’t be able to take care of that or sign for you because he’s not a legal parent, guardian or relative. So what’s going to have to happen is, only thing you can do is go through a judicial bypass —

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: You will have to come in, take a pregnancy test. After we run the test and see it’s positive we’ll have a list of questions that we have to ask you, and we have to go over our options. Three options — which is, you know, we have to let you know you do have the choice to keep it if you would like. There is also abortion. There is the option of, you know, having the baby and putting it up for adoption. But you will have to go through — we will have to give you the counseling. It’s basically counseling, give you your three options, and then go over some questions with you. You would, after that you would have to go see a public defender or a lawyer for the state.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: We’re not really sure. They probably don’t, but we’re not sure about that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You will go through a judicial bypass. You will speak to a public defender or a lawyer for the state, and he will go before a judge with you and let you know, let the judge know that you want to go for an abortion without your parents’ consent. You have to go through a couple of things before you can have that done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge ever say no?

CLINIC: Well, it all depends. Sometimes the judge will say no if he doesn’t think that, you know, doesn’t think there’s a big threat that your parents knowing will cause a problem. If it’s really going to be a problem that your parents know that you want to have this done and that you are pregnant, then he’ll okay it, and the judge will sign the papers and you can go to the abortion clinic and get it done because the judge signed and said it’s okay for you to get it done.

CALLER: Okay, well, does the judge have to tell anybody about it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Everything stays confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Would you be able to come in on Monday?

CALLER: I think so. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but — because he’d be the only way I could get there. Would that be all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yes, that’s fine. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. So I could come in for a pregnancy test and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was there?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and him talked about it, and we don’t want anybody to know about us. So.

CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, if the — like is it possible that the pregnancy test could be that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Did you take a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, it’s a possibility that you can be.

CALLER: Oh, well, if I wasn’t pregnant could I be on birth control then?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: I understand, so if your test comes back negative we can always put you on birth control.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Everything is confidential. We don’t tell anyone. It’s on you if you want to tell somebody, but Planned Parenthood, everything is confidential with Planned Parenthood. We don’t release any information to anyone. We won’t even be able to release information to your boyfriend if he asked.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the problem is, well, could he come and pick them up because I’m not old enough to drive. He’d be the only one that could get them.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. He can always come pick them up. All you have to do is write a note. We can put the note in your chart.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just really scared and I don’t know, but would it be all right if I called and talked to you if I thought of anything else? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Latoya.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: I live in Union Grove.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I come there and ask you guys questions?

CLINIC: Yeah. And then they can give you a list of places also.

CALLER: Well, could I come and get a pregnancy test? I’m just really worried because I haven’t had my period since December 14th, and I don’t know what to do. I’m just scared.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, we don’t have to tell anybody anything. It’s all confidential. We don’t tell anyone anything. We can’t release any of the information unless you sign a consent for us to release it to someone.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Since I don’t drive or anything, is it all right if my boyfriend comes to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: You would have to sign a consent here with you. But you need to find out if you’re pregnant or not first.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: We’ve got to take it one step at a time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you need to come in and get that all checked out, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: But do you guys have to tell my parents about anything at all?

CLINIC: Okay. Listen. We’re not going to tell anybody anything. It’s all confidential.

CLINIC: No, not at this location. Milwaukee does.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want their 800 number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CALLER: But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: I don’t believe so, no.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, (?).

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not here. In Appleton and in Milwaukee.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have the numbers for those?

CLINIC: Yeah. 1-800-472-2703.

CALLER: Is that for both of them?

CLINIC: It’s Milwaukee, but they can help you out.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask a quick question? I’m just really worried. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March, she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’re 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’re not even 14?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: You’re not even 14?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: And your boyfriend’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: I don’t know. He’s probably going to get in trouble.

CALLER: What kind of trouble? What do you mean?

CLINIC: You’re a minor. And you have to be a 25-year-old — I do believe it’s a 25-year-old relative at the least; otherwise, under 18 you have to be with a parent.

CALLER: Well, my parents can’t find out at all. I mean, they know that we’re going out. They just hate him because they think he’s too old for me. But if they found out that we were having sex, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: That’s what happens. He should have known better.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? I just don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: And you’re positive that you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, no. I was wanting to come in for a pregnancy test because —

CLINIC: I think you should.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you miss a period?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I haven’t had my period since December 14th.

CLINIC: Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: So you’re 13. Are you able to get here?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend would be able to take me. Would he get in trouble?

CLINIC: No, no, not here. I’m just saying let’s say you were — I don’t know. I don’t know what would happen. But here, no. This is all confidential.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: What’s your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Do you spell it with a “C”?

CALLER: A “Ch.”

CLINIC: C-h-r-i-s-t-i-n-e?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: S-m-i-t-h?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you’ve never been here before you said?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: We close at 2. Are you able to get here before then?

CALLER: I would have to call him and see, but I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Maybe call a cab or something, whatever, but you need to get your butt in here, okay?

CALLER: Okay. If I wasn’t pregnant, could you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah, definitely.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, no.

CALLER: All right. And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No, no.

CALLER: Would it be okay if he picked up the birth control? Because I can’t drive.

CLINIC: Yeah. That would be fine if he came in here to pick them up for you.

CALLER: I just have a lot of questions, and I don’t know what to do. Could I call and talk to you if I thought of anything else? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Angelica.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah, just make sure you get in here. And we can talk to you about everything too, okay?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Oconomowoc.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not here, not at this facility. Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I’m not sure. I jus am real scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 14th. So I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Have you taken a home test?

CALLER: No. Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. I would recommend you take a home test. Either that or come in here, we can test you. And then I can give you your options.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There is a charge though, and that’s why I recommended the home test first. Our pregnancy test and counseling is going to run around $45.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything and take care of it.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: The problem is I’ll be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell on my boyfriend because he’s 22.

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. You’re 13 now?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Holy cow. Ummmm. Yeah, that’s reportable.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: I don’t know. He could be in a lot of trouble.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want him to get in trouble. What can I do?

CLINIC: I know. Oh boy. (Sighing) First of all, you better do a home test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Boy. This is a tough one. Because if you want to terminate the pregnancy if you are pregnant — where they do it is in Appleton, Planned Parenthood there. And I’ll tell you that so that at least you know where to call.

CALLER: Would they have to tell my parents that I was getting an abortion though?

CLINIC: No. We can’t tell your parents. But the problem is —

CALLER: Yeah?

(Pause, Clinic speaking to someone else)

CLINIC: Hold on a minute, hon, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hon?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re 13. You think you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I’m going to tell you this up front. The minimum you’re going to pay for an abortion is $455.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you’re under 18. If you don’t want your parents to know you’re going to have to get a judicial bypass, which means you’re going to have to make an appointment with the DA. Go to court.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t know. What I can do is I can give you the number to the abortion clinic up in Appleton, and they are wonderful ladies. They will tell you everything you need to know. Because it sounds like you’re pretty far along, so you’re looking at a pretty expensive procedure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what’s the number for them?

CLINIC: Okay, hold on. It’s 1-888-844-5771.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And they’re nice. But you need to find out that you’re pregnant first. You haven’t taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No. I just didn’t know that they were right or not.

CLINIC: Well, what we do here, or what you do in the store, they’re just simple urine tests. And the ones in the store they are pretty accurate. What they’re doing is detecting that HCG hormone. And that’s the hormone that lets us know you’re pregnant. It won’t come up positive if you don’t have that in there. So they’re pretty reliable. If they tell you you’re pregnant, you’re pregnant, hon.

CALLER: Well, would I be able to come in with my boyfriend and get like a pregnancy test there though?

CLINIC: You could. You could.

CALLER: But would you have to say anything about him?

CLINIC: See, I don’t know because you are so young and he is old. He could get in trouble for that (chuckle).

CALLER: Well, if I took a home pregnancy test, if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control? Because I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah. If you’re negative, by all means come on in and get birth control pills.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. We’re not allowed to.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: That I’m not quite sure of. That I’m not quite sure of. I’m not sure.

CALLER: So would it just be better not to say anything about my boyfriend to you guys?

CLINIC: Well, we know now (laughing).

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Hold on. Let me go back and ask a nurse real quick. Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. You’re kind of in a sticky situation because you’re 13 and you’re sleeping with a 22-year-old.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. And we’re not here to judge. But legally they would have to report that because it is technically statutory rape. Your pregnancy would be —

CALLER: I mean, he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. But by the law, if anyone found out that you were — even if you were in love to the umpteenth degree, if the wrong person found out, it could be trouble. It could be trouble.

CALLER: But you’re not going to tell anybody now, are you?

CLINIC: Well, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But if you came in we would have to. But now that leaves you in a bind. Because if you’re pregnant and you go up to the AB clinic, then they’re going to know, you know what I’m saying? I mean, it’s great that you guys are in love, but technically because you are so young and he’s over 18 —

CALLER: Well, do you know if there’s any other place I could go?

CLINIC: Why don’t you take your home test first? Take your home test first before you get yourself really worried. Take your home test first. My suggestion would be if you’re negative, please get on the pill. Protect yourself.

CALLER: But where could I go for that?

CLINIC: My suggestion would be — you could go anywhere if you just kind of keep your mouth shut.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Yeah. I’m just so scared. I don’t know.

CLINIC: I know. And it is scary. And if you were like 16 and he was 22, it would be a different story, but you’re 13. And like I said, we’re not here to judge you, and we will not. But technically that’s the law, and the nurses here do have to abide by that. So if you came in and they knew that you were sleeping with a 22-year-old man, they would have to report it.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But that’s anyplace. That’s not just us, hon; that’s anyplace.

CALLER: Okay. You’re so nice. I wish I could talk to my mom like I talk to you. She just doesn’t ever listen to me.

CLINIC: And you know, a lot of moms they see it differently. But we understand. We’ve been there ourselves and we see it everyday, so we understand.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: My suggestion would be, if you find out you’re pregnant just take care of it how you have to take care of it. You’ve got the number to the AB clinic. Call the ladies. They’ll tell you about funding or what not and cost and all that good stuff. But I really wouldn’t advertise that you’re dating a 22-year-old.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, if I thought of any more other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Yes, you can. My name is Sarah (sp).

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye now.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: It’s 731-9534.

CALLER: Okay. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We have to have a legal guardian.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to tell them. If they found out, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you talk with the abortion clinic to see what you can do, okay?

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though? I’m just really scared because my last period was December 14th, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Okay. Are you a student?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Okay. Because the pregnancy test is going to be $30.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you can come in and have a pregnancy test. Just make sure that you do not go to the bathroom for three hours before you come in. And you don’t need an appointment or anything; it’s a walk-in service. On the day that you come in, you have to come in at least an hour before closing time though.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What time do you guys close?

CLINIC: Today at 1:00. So you’d have to get here by noon.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I would really feel better if my boyfriend was there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. And you’ll have to pay about $30 today.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, he just doesn’t want anybody to know about us, so would you guys be asking questions or anything?

CLINIC: We’ll have you fill out some paperwork.

CALLER: Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Nope. It doesn’t really have anything to do with him.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you would have to come in for an exam and a pap smear before we could start you on birth control.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: That can cost up to $100.

CALLER: Could I get on birth control right away?

CLINIC: You’d have to make an appointment to come back. If you came in for a pregnancy test, you’d have to schedule an appointment for a different time to come in and get birth control.

CALLER: Okay. The problem is I can’t drive because I’m not old enough. But can my boyfriend pick up the birth control after the exam or whatever?

CLINIC: Sure. He would just have to bring in — we give every patient that gets birth control here an identification card. And he would just have to bring that in for you, and he’d be able to pick up your pills or your birth control or whatever.

CALLER: Does he have to sign anything for that?

CLINIC: No. He won’t be a part of anything that you do here. It’s all having to do with you.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, thanks. You’re just so nice. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Sarah (sp).

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
