CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know anywhere that would?

CLINIC: Yeah. We have — if you come in and have a positive pregnancy test we give you a list of places to go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And there’s a place in Pittsburgh that’s like — we’re an affiliate of that place.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we don’t do them here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? Okay. Because like my parents can’t find out at all because, well the problem is like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married and move out, but they hate him because they think that he’s too old for me, so.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: (silence) The best I can do right now is if you want to come in and have a pregnancy test we can do that here.

CALLER: Okay. They wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if like I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: We sure do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Like, well the main reason why I’m worried about it is because my last period was like the first week in December, so I’m just — I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Do you want to come in today for a test?

CALLER: Well, I can’t come in today. I have to get my boyfriend to bring me and he’s at work.

CLINIC: What time does he get off work?

CALLER: He gets off at 5:00.

CLINIC: We’re here until 6:00. Can you be here at 5:30?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to see, but I think so, maybe.

CLINIC: Okay. Try to get here at 5:30.

CALLER: All right. Is it all right if like I think of any more questions to call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. What you need to do is pee in a cup though and bring it in with you.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: First of December. Even if you don’t bring it, you’ll probably be able to pee in a cup here because it would have been long enough. Our test should pick it up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Okay. And you guys like wouldn’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if like my boyfriend brings me and everything?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Be here for 5:30, no later, because we leave at 6:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. So is it all right if I call you back and ask you any more questions if I have any?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Michelle.

CALLER: Michelle?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Could you hold, please?

CALLER: Sure.

CLINIC: How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: If we do what? I’m sorry.

CALLER: Abortions?

CLINIC: Bushings?

CALLER: Like an abortion?

CLINIC: Oh! I’m sorry. I didn’t understand. Are you on a cell phone?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. I was just wondering why it sounded like a little crackle. Yeah, at the Warminster Office.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And would you like to give them a call?

CALLER: Yeah. What’s their phone number?

CLINIC: I got it right here. 215-957-7980.

CALLER: 7980?

CLINIC: Correct, and what you’ll need to do is, if you’re closer — do you live close — like at the Bentel Maria (ph)?

CALLER: I live in Phoenixville.

CLINIC: Then you’re closer to — whichever Planned Parenthood you’re closest to you would have to do a compliance visit and then wait. There’s a 24-hour waiting period in the state of Pennsylvania for the procedure.

CALLER: Is it okay if I come there because like I just don’t want anyone to see me.

CLINIC: To, you mean, the Warminster office?

CALLER: Huh? To where you’re at.

CLINIC: You can come to any Planned Parenthood for the counseling.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And take the pregnancy test. They determine how long you’re pregnant, so on and so forth.

CALLER: Do you know if there’s like an age requirement for being — or having an abortion? Because like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No. I think that that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anybody?

CLINIC: No. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s completely anonymous.

CALLER: It’s just I can’t tell my parents at all because like, well my boyfriend’s 22 and we’re going to get married and we’re in love, but like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me, so.

CLINIC: I see, yeah. No, that should not be a problem at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And, but I would call the Warminster office if you have any questions about the procedure itself.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Would it be okay if my boyfriend brings me and everything?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Because he’d be the only way that I could get there, so.

CLINIC: Yes. That’s no problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back? Like I have to ask him a question but —

CLINIC: Well, if you’re coming in for a pregnancy test, you don’t need an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You just come in, have the pregnancy test done, and then they’ll, you know, give you the information that you would need if you decide that if you are pregnant and you should decide to do the procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Take it from there.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I talk to you later? It’s just —

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: If I could talk to my mom like I can talk to you it would be — my life would be so much easier. But like what was your name?

CLINIC: Terry.

CALLER: Terry?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Well, if my boyfriend goes? He’s 22?

CALLER: I’d be able to send my boyfriend to come get it?

CLINIC: You have to become one of our patients first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Once you become one of our patients, then you can put him down that he can pick up your pills.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Call Hillcrest now.

CALLER: If I talk to him, and I have some more questions, is it all right to call you back?

CLINIC: Sure you can.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Could I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t do them in this office. They’re done out of our Warminster (sp) office.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: 957-7980. But before you can have an abortion done there you need to have a pregnancy test done at one of our clinics.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And when the test comes back we’ll go over your options with you. If you decide you want to have a termination done, you need to complete what’s called a compliance counseling.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: That’s a video-tape you need to watch about the procedure and some paperwork that you need to fill out.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Our procedures are only done on Fridays, so it needs to be completed by Wednesday of that week.

CALLER: Do you know if there’s like an age requirement for that or anything? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You need to have parental consent in Pennsylvania.

CALLER: I can’t have that. Like — well, like my parents can’t find out at all. Is there any way not to — like —

CLINIC: You would have to go over to New Jersey. I mean, yeah, because in Pennsylvania you need parental consent.

CALLER: Oh. Well, it’s just like, my parents can’t find out at all because like my boyfriend’s 22 and we’re in love and we’re going to get married but like they hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay, well, that’s fine. You would have to go over to New Jersey. They don’t need parental consent there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you know how far along you are?

CALLER: Well, the last, my last period was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on for one second. (pause) Hello?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me give you some phone numbers in New Jersey.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. There’s Planned Parenthood of the Mercer area, and that’s in Trenton. And the number there is 609-599-4881. There’s the South Jersey Women’s Center. That’s in Cherry Hill. And the phone number there is 1-800-240-6730. And there is the Princeton Women’s Center. The number there is 1-800-216-0016. And the Cherry Hill Women’s Center, the number is 1-800-877-6331.

CALLER: 6331?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, like if I came to you guys could you do birth control there?

CLINIC: Well, what you would do is, you can go for the procedure first. You can always come back here for a post-abortion exam which needs to be done three weeks after your procedure so the day that you go in for the procedure, like if you go in on a Friday — wait a couple days until you’re feeling better, and then give us a call, and we can schedule the appointment for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But like with birth control there you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t tell anybody. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So like is it all right if my boyfriend comes and is there with me?

CLINIC: It’s okay, but you need to understand that in a lot of clinics you know, sometimes we’re required if there is such a large age difference to report it.

CALLER: To who? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Well, it’s illegal for anybody over 17 to be having sex with someone who’s 13. So you can come in by yourself. That’s fine.

CALLER: What could happen?

CLINIC: What was that?

CALLER: What could happen?

CLINIC: Your boyfriend could go to jail.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: So —

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: I would just say, you know, you can come in by yourself, and if you go over to New Jersey, you know, just, you know, say that it’s a friend that’s bringing you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So just don’t tell them who he is?

CLINIC: Yes, exactly.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right. Bye.

CALLER: Well, is there any way like I could call you back like if I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you it would be — what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Megan.

CALLER: Megan?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Okay.

CLINIC: No, not in our affiliate. The closest Planned Parenthood is the one in, the affiliate in York.

CALLER: In York?

CLINIC: Yeah, or we refer to Hillcrest Women’s Clinic in Harrisburg.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you need that number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second and I’ll get it for you. Are you interested in a surgical abortion or a medical abortion?

CALLER: I don’t know. Like is there an age requirement for either one?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. You do need parental consent in the state of Pennsylvania. Are you involving Mom and Dad?

CALLER: Like I can’t tell them. Like, well, my boyfriend’s 22 and we’re going to get married, but they hate him, so they can’t find out. They think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. Then you’re going to need to go out of state.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And the closest would be in Hagerstown, Maryland.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me give you a number for them, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Let me see here. I’m looking trying to find it for you. I get a little confused. Oh, my goodness I just had it.

CALLER: In Maryland they don’t have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: No. I’m looking. Okay, here. Hagerstown Reproductive Health Services. And it’s in Hagerstown. It’s 1-800-773-9140.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, honey?

CALLER: Well, I was wondering like if like I wasn’t pregnant is there any way I could have birth control?

CLINIC: We can dispense birth control from here with, you know, after an exam and things like that. We do do it here. If you were interested in setting up an appointment. But what you’re first I guess, you — have you confirmed that you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: And it was positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Then you’re more than likely — that’s accurate, and you are pregnant.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like if I got birth control there you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Nope, it’s confidential.

CALLER: Is it all right if like my boyfriend comes with me?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: And he wouldn’t have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No. No. The only thing that — yeah, she’s — I just think I put her chart up. Can you hold for just one moment, please?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. (pause) Okay, thanks for holding. Yeah. I mean, we most certainly can set you up with an appointment here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, my only question and issue to you is, you are aware of the statutes on the age difference between you and your partner, aren’t you?

CALLER: I don’t understand.

CLINIC: I mean, you’re 14 and he’s how old?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. And by law– I mean, you’re not having any kind of coercive intercourse?

CALLER: No. We’re in love. We’re going to get married. We just got to — like he’s going to move out and we’re going to get married, and we just have to figure out what to do about my parents.

CLINIC: Okay, all right. Well, I’m just telling you because I mean if we involve him in this there’s — you know, I mean, it just could be — there could be questions.

CALLER: Like what kind of questions?

CLINIC: Well, legality. (laughs) I mean, when there’s more than I believe it’s —

CALLER: Like could he get in trouble?

CLINIC: Well, he could. I mean, by law you’re not — you’re more than a minor.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: He could go to jail. Okay? I mean, that’s — and that’s probably why your parents aren’t supporting this. I just want to tell you what the mandate is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The mandate of reporting of suspicious sexual abuse — I’m not saying you’re being sexually abused — but if someone is less than 16 years old and the person is more than 4 years older, or the person is 13, irrespective of age difference between the victim and the alleged perpetrator, the mandate to report exists only when the alleged perpetrator is a parent, stepparent, member of household, or a boyfriend/girlfriend, caretaker. Now, I don’t know — this is in the event — I’m only saying — that someone suspects sexual abuse, which it does not obviously sound that is the case for you. But I just want you to be aware that that is something that people will question because there is such a large age difference between you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I mean, you’re a young girl. He’s a man. And that’s — you know, that’s a big difference, okay? As long as you are not being physically or sexually abused in any way, there should not be a problem. But you still, for the service that you’re looking for first, for the first thing, you definitely have to go out of state without your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now here we can do whatever you need as far as your healthcare and birth control without them being involved at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? I just want to make sure that you’re in a good situation and everything.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, he loves me. He’s a sweetheart.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, that’s — you know. And this is — it’s your decision, you know? (laughs) It is your decision.

CALLER: Is it okay if i call you back? I like you.

CLINIC: Oh, absolutely. Please.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Jackie.

CALLER: Jackie? All right.

CLINIC: Yes. Okay?

CALLER: And you don’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: Not at all, honey.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So get your thoughts together.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Call Hagerstown. See what you can get accomplished there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And obviously he could probably help you out financially with the service?

CALLER: Yeah. He’s going to take care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay, and when you come here for your services they would be free because of your age, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you don’t — you wouldn’t have to worry about that, and you could hide that from whoever you needed to. (laughs) Okay?

CALLER: So like is it cool if he comes with me to get like birth control or whatever?

CLINIC: That would be fine. That should be fine.

CALLER: And he wouldn’t have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No, he wouldn’t. This is just about you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you just do what you need to do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome, honey. Good luck to you, okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood of Warminster (sp). May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes. Yes, we do.

CALLER: And how much does that cost?

CLINIC: If you’re under 12 weeks it’s $305 for a local and $390 for IV sedation.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like do you guys — like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my mom and dad before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: Are you under 18?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yes, we would need parental consent, yes.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents, because like if they found out they would freak. Like my boyfriend, he’s 22, and we’re going to get married and everything, but they can’t stand him because they think he’s too old for me, so.

CLINIC: If you — you can try to get a court order from a judge if you can present reasonable, you know, reason that you shouldn’t have to tell your parents. You could also contact —

CALLER: Like what kind of reason?

CLINIC: — (unclear) in New Jersey. The sort of reason where your life could be threatened, something like that if you were to reveal it — that sort of thing.

CALLER: Okay. Does the judge have to say — like does the judge ever say no, like —

CLINIC: I’m sure that they would, yes. They would have to weigh the evidence.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Like do I have to get a lawyer or anything?

CLINIC: You know what? I’m not exactly sure how you proceed with that. Can you hold one moment and I’ll find out?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Thank you. (pause) Okay, ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. We’d actually have to call one of our supervisors to find out about that. Can I have a number where we can call you back?

CALLER: Well, I don’t — I’m at my friend’s house, and if — her mom’s here, so if she picks up there wouldn’t be any way like —

CLINIC: Okay. Did you want to call us back later? We’ll find out for you and we’ll just have the information.

CALLER: Yeah. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Nicole.

CALLER: Nicole?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if you guys — like say that I wasn’t pregnant and I wanted to get birth control, do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yes. Yes, we do.

CALLER: And would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No, not for just an exam and oral contraceptives, no.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right like if my boyfriend comes with me?

CLINIC: Sure. He can’t come in the exam room with you, but he can accompany you here.

CALLER: Okay. But I wouldn’t have to give his name or anything?

CLINIC: No, not his name, absolutely not, just your name.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. All right. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good bye.

(phone clicks)

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood in Warminster. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi, yeah. I was wondering if I could talk to Nicole?

CLINIC: Okay. May I ask who’s calling?

CALLER: This is Christine.

CLINIC: Hold on one moment.

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Is this Nicole?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Hi. This is — I called like a little while ago. I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m sorry. I had many phone calls. Can you refresh me?

CALLER: Well, I was the 13-year-old with the 22-year-old —

CLINIC: Oh, right, right. We’re still waiting to hear back from our supervisor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to call back later today?

CALLER: Well, you were saying something about going to New Jersey. Did you have that phone number or —

CLINIC: Sure. There are several clinics in New Jersey where it’s not necessary to have parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let’s see here.

CALLER: Do you know if it’s all right if my boyfriend takes me there?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: Do you know if it’s all right if my boyfriend takes me there?

CLINIC: I don’t know why it wouldn’t be.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Let’s see —

CALLER: And they don’t have to tell on him or anything?

CLINIC: They don’t have to tell who?

CALLER: They don’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Why would they tell anybody anything?

CALLER: I don’t — like they wouldn’t tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: As far as they’re concerned it’s just your means of, you know, arrival at the clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? There’s one Planned Parenthood in Trenton. Their number is 609-599-4881.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And there’s —

CALLER: Do you know if it would be easier if I went to New Jersey or — like —

CLINIC: It would probably be easier than getting a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay.

Your call is being transferred.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know anyone that would?

CLINIC: First you would have to get a positive pregnancy test. Have you done that yet?

CALLER: Well, I had a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and it was positive.

CLINIC: You would have to get proof of pregnancy from like a Planned Parenthood, which we can do that for you. And then we would refer you out. We would give you names and phone numbers of places that do the abortion.

CALLER: Is there like an age requirement for that or anything? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, there would not be — the pregnancy test would be free for you. But I’m sure you are going to have to pay for the abortion, and I don’t know — wherever you decide to go, they’ll give you a price for that.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend will take care of it. He’s got a job. He’s 22 and everything.

CLINIC: Okay. But the pregnancy test will be free for you.

CALLER: Is there an age requirement for abortions?

CLINIC: I know in the state of Pennsylvania — do you live in Pennsylvania?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. You would have to have parental permission.

CALLER: Is there any way around that? I can’t tell my parents because they absolutely hate my boyfriend and everything. They can’t find out at all. They think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: In the state of Pennsylvania, you would definitely need parental consent.

CALLER: What can I do?

CLINIC: If you went outside of Pennsylvania — you can go to New Jersey. I know they don’t need parental consent, but that’s our decision. We can give you that information when you come in.

CALLER: Okay. Say after the pregnancy test that you guys do, if you find out I wasn’t pregnant, do you have a birth control program or anything?

CLINIC: If you find out that you’re not pregnant, we can set up an appointment for you to become a family planning patient. You can get on birth control, give you all your options. So it’s basically up to you whatever you decide to do.

CALLER: Do you guys have to tell anybody about this?

CLINIC: Oh, no. It’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: So if my boyfriend comes with me, it’s all okay and everything?

CLINIC: Um-hmm. That’s fine.

CALLER: Would he have to fill out any paperwork?

CLINIC: Nope. It’s all about you, when you come in.

CALLER: He’s already got a little boy, so he knows about birth control. So it would just be cool if he could come and be there with me.

CLINIC: All they would do here is the pregnancy test like I said. We don’t do the abortions here. Like I said, we would refer you out.

CALLER: Well, like for birth control.

CLINIC: Right. But you’d have to make sure you’re not pregnant first.

CALLER: And you guys don’t have to tell anyone about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Everything you say here is confidential. We would advise you that — he’s 22, like you said, and you’re 14. No one would find out. That’s the bottom line.

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: Unless he’s like physically hurting you or something.

CALLER: No. We’re in love, and we’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So like, no.

CLINIC: Okay. No one will find out, no. That’s not an issue here.

CALLER: Where in New Jersey would it be?

CLINIC: When you come in, like I said, if we find out that you do have a positive pregnancy test and you’re choosing abortion, we can give you a sheet that we have of all places in New Jersey that do abortions. And you would choose from that sheet where you wanted to go.

CALLER: When could I be able to come in?

CLINIC: A pregnancy test is a walk-in service. You can come in any time during the times that we’re open.

CALLER: Do I have to give my name or anything then?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah? Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you choose not to give your correct name, that’s your decision. But we encourage you to give your correct name.

CALLER: Well, I just can’t let my parents know at all. I just can’t get in trouble. I don’t know what they would do if they found out about all this.

CLINIC: No, it’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay. If I thought up any more questions, can I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. Anyone here can help you.

CALLER: Well, I like you. You’re nice. Is it okay if I call you?

CLINIC: I can’t guarantee that I’m going to answer the phone.

CALLER: Oh. Well, can I ask for you. What was your name?

CLINIC: I don’t like to give my name out. But anyone here is qualified to help you. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do provide that service here.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know how much it would cost?

CLINIC: They start at $300. They range from $300 to $400.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there like an age requirement for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You have to have a parental consent, honey.

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way that you guys don’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No. In the state of Pennsylvania it’s a law that you’re required to have parental consent.

CALLER: Oh. Because — well, like my parents can’t find out at all because like — well like my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re in love and we’re going to get married, but like, like they can’t find out because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Right. Well, honey, in the state of Pennsylvania you have to have a parental consent, and that’s going to be in any state you go.

CALLER: In any state?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay. So what do I do?

CLINIC: You’re going to have to talk to your parents about it, hon.

CALLER: But I can’t. They would get furious.

CLINIC: Okay. Well (laughs). That’s the best thing I can tell you. That’s what you’re going to have to do because that’s your only option really right now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If like I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control or anything there?

CLINIC: We do birth control, yes.

CALLER: Would you have to tell my parents about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, all right. If I had any more questions could I call you back?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Michelle.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. What we can do is refer you to our Planned Parenthood in Redding that does terminations.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Sure. The Redding Planned Parenthood phone number is 610-376-8061. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. There is a parental notification law in the state of Pennsylvania, that you would need to discuss with your parents —

CALLER: I can’t tell my parents. They can’t find out. The problem is, my boyfriend is 22. We’re going to get married and everything, but they hate him because they think that he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. But there is a parental notification in the state of Pennsylvania, if you want to stay in the state of Pennsylvania for a termination.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: You can go to court, or the other thing is that you can go out of state to a patient site.

CALLER: If I went to court, would I have to pay for a lawyer and everything?

CLINIC: What you would do is call — you can call the Redding Planned Parenthood and ask them to walk you through the steps that are necessary for that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, the main reason I’m calling, my last period was the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So that’s why — I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Right. Hold on a second. Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend, and I think I did it right.

CLINIC: All right. Give me an exact date. Hold on.

When was the exact date of your last period?

CALLER: I’m not real sure. I know it was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: According to that time period and according to the information you’re giving me, you’re ready to start your 12th week. Terminations can be done up to 14 weeks from your last period.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You really need to contact them and get this moving as soon as possible.

CALLER: Okay. But you don’t think they’d have to tell anybody there?

CLINIC: At the Redding Planned Parenthood?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You would still need parental consent or get a court — information. And they can tell you how to go about doing that.

CALLER: Say that I wasn’t pregnant or whatever, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Right. Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I did the home pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Okay. Then that pretty much means that you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: What you can do if you’re really confused, you can walk in during our pregnancy test hours and meet with a counselor who could help you, talk to you about some of these things.

CALLER: Would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Here we’re confidential. We wouldn’t have to tell anybody. You can obtain pregnancy testing without parental consent, but if you do want a termination, that’s when you need help.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right that if I have a couple more questions, if I can call you back?

CLINIC: Sure. Or walk in so we can run the test and then talk to you face to face.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Patty.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye bye.

(dialing sound) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you know if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: There’s a few things you done before you could do that.

CALLER: Okay. What needs to be done?

CLINIC: You would need to have a pregnancy test done here, and we would need to do an exam to tell you how far along you are.

CALLER: Do you have to be a specific age to get a pregnancy test? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. That doesn’t matter what age you are.

CALLER: Okay. And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my parents can’t find out at all because like, well the problem is, my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married and everything, but like my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And there’s just no way that they could find out or anything.

CLINIC: Okay. Did you want to make an appointment to come in?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see.

CLINIC: When he could bring you?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, and we can arrange for you to come in and have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So after the pregnancy test I could have an abortion, or —

CLINIC: Well, then you would have the pregnancy test and we do an exam. I don’t know if you’ve heard of the pap and pelvic exams?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Normally like we’ll do an exam like once a year, and then if for some reason it would be negative we can do an exam for you and then you would be able to get pills here if you would like to be on birth control, or if you want to be on the shot.

CALLER: Do I have to tell anybody about the —

CLINIC: No. It wouldn’t cost you anything.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend came and picked them up?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Yeah? Would he have to fill out any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No. It would just — you would have to come for the exam the first time and then we would need you to come back three months later and get your blood pressure and weight checked.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then he can come and pick them up for you.

CALLER: So I could get an abortion like without my parents knowing at all?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Okay. And my boyfriend could bring me and everything?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. If I had more questions like I have to talk to him and see — but if I have more questions could I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure. I mean, you can come in or if you want to just call and ask a few questions.

CALLER: Okay What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Dana.

CALLER: Dana?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, where would I have to go to get an abortion?

CLINIC: You would have to go to a different office.

CALLER: Oh. Like where?

CLINIC: There are other places that do it, but the office in York does it.

CALLER: Okay. But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.
