CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Barb. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No we do not. Those are done at our Auburn office. Would you like that number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: It’s 287-6488.

CALLER: Could I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just worried because friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March, she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is it all right if he just signs whatever, and they won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: The thing is, when you call them, talk to them. They tell you how they can work around that.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just not really sure if I am pregnant. I just haven’t had my period for a while. Would it be all right to come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yes. They’re $11, and you can come in up to 1:30. And tomorrow we’re open between 9 and 1:30 for that.

CALLER: Do you know if anyone has to know that I’m getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. No, no one knows.

CALLER: Okay. I would actually really feel better if my boyfriend was there. Is that all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Well, when you come back in there it will just be you that we’ll talk to.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But he can come with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay. If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, co you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Well, you would have to make an appointment to get those. We just don’t give those out. You have to make an appointment to get those and have a pap smear and that done.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody that I’m on birth control?

CLINIC: No, no, no.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Heidi speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not at our center in Oxford, but at the one in Cincinnati we do.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: I sure do. Hang on for a moment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks.

(Short pause)

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. There number is 513-287-6488. And I believe they’re there now.

CALLER: Could I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: Oh, definitely.

CALLER: I’m just really worried because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, they would have to tell somebody. If you’re interested I can get you a number for — it’s Ohio state law. So if you go to Illinois, it’s the closest state I think from where we’re at where you do not need parental notification.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So I can give you a number of the Planned Parenthood in Illinois and a number — there’s an abortion center I have the number for in Chicago. I don’t know if there’s a closer one — a Parenthood closer to where we are if you don’t feel like driving that far north. I can get you their Planned Parenthood number, and you can try there, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hang on for just a moment, please.

RECORDING: — STD? Do you just want to be sure everything’s okay in regards to your sexual health? Then purchase our Peace of Mind package. For only $30 you’ll receive coupons for the following. One pack of emergency contraception, commonly known as the “morning after pill,” a simple urine test for chlamydia and gonorrhea, an HIV test with the Orasure mouth swab, and 12 free condoms. You can cash in your coupons at any scheduled visit or give them to a friend or relative. This promotion is for a limited time and can only be used at our Oxford location. Ask a staff member for details when we return.

The emergency contraceptive pill, commonly known as the “Morning After Pill” —

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. This is somebody different. I’m Marsha. You needed the number for a place in Illinois?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And are you interested in one that does not have parental notification; is that correct?

CALLER: Uh-huh, yeah. I can’t let my parents know at all.

CLINIC: Okay, sure. It’s a place called Family Planning Associates Medical Group. And their number is 773-725-0200.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me just kind of peek at — as far as Illinois — I’ll give you the Chicago affiliate. I don’t know which one provides abortions if any of them and what their regulations are. It looks like there’s a bunch of different ones. I’m going to give you just a line to the main one. It’s 312-427-2276, and maybe they can help you also.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right to come in there for a pregnancy test to see?

CLINIC: Oh, surely, just to verify?

CALLER: The main reason is because I’m really scared because I haven’t had my period since December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay, sure. And you are under 18, correct?

CALLER: Right. I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. So the test will cost you $6, and we’ll just need you to pay for that up front before we run it. We’ll collect a urine specimen while you’ll here, and you’re fill out some forms for us, and you’ll get the results. And you can just walk in for that as long as you get here by 4:30 today.

CALLER: My boyfriend wanted to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: What we will do is we want to talk with you first before we involve him. So we’ll sit with you in a room and give you the results and talk with you, and then he can come back. But initially we just need to deal with you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he just says that — we talked about it, and we don’t want anybody to know at all.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. That’s your decision.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: So there is nobody that we do have to directly talk with as far as telling that you are here for a test. Right.

CALLER: All right. Well, if the pregnancy test said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come there for birth control then?

CLINIC: Most definitely.

CALLER: Okay. I just don’t want to have to worry about all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah, most definitely.

CALLER: Do you know if I was there — I just don’t want anybody to know about my boyfriend or anything. Would you guys have to say anything?

CLINIC: Well, we do have — it depends on how much information you give us. If you come in and you tell us information that is a reportable incident, then we will have to report it. You can choose —

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: — not to tell us information. There’s certain laws about age, dating. So if you were to report, say, that possibly your boyfriend is older than you are, and you’re a minor, then we would definitely have to call and report that. If you do not give us that information or do not say that to us, then we are not required to report it. We are state mandated to report any information you give us regarding that.

CALLER: Oh. So I just shouldn’t say anything?

CLINIC: It’s your choice what you want to tell us, okay?

CALLER: All right. If I was on birth control, you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No, we do not have to tell anybody if you’re on birth control. No. All of our services are confidential.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All rightly.

CALLER: So I don’t have to tell my parents anything at all?

CLINIC: No, you do not, not for birth control, no. There is parental notification for abortions unless you go somewhere else, which you’ve probably already been through that before, correct?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: What do you mean by I’ve already been —

CLINIC: You knew that because you were asking for a number where you didn’t have to — correct?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But not for birth control. And like I said, we just do pregnancy tests on a walk-in basis. So there are people here for scheduled appointments. We just work you in between them. And you just need to be here by 4:30.

CALLER: And your name was Marsha?

CLINIC: I’m Marsha.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that might?

CLINIC: There are places from Youngstown on. We do have a listing of some different ones. If you’re wanting to stop in and pick up a listing, you’re more than welcome to. And they have the names, the addresses and the numbers on there.

CALLER: Okay. Could I ask you some questions?

CLINIC: Actually we don’t do anything like that, so I probably really can’t answer your question. What kind of question did you want to ask?

CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just say whatever they need, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You know what? I would have no idea. I don’t know. I really don’t know. You probably would need to either call those places and find out or whatever, but I would have no idea. Because we don’t deal with anything like that.

CALLER: Well, it’s just I’m scared. My last period was December 14th, and I don’t know what to do. I’m just worried.

CLINIC: Well —

CALLER: Could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, we can do a pregnancy test for you.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: No, no. We can do that. That’s the only thing we can do. And then we can give you papers on — if that’s what you want to do, termination, or continue pregnancy or whatever, then we can do that.

Let me see. I don’t have anything today. Could you come in Monday morning?

CALLER: I think so. But would it be all right if both me and my boyfriend came in?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. He can come with you; that’s not a problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Could you come in like 9:00 Monday morning?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: What is your name?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: With a “C” or a “K”?

CALLER: A “Ch.”

CLINIC: And your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: Okay. And you’ve never been here before; is that correct?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: What I would need for you to do, Christine, is I would need for you to collect your first morning urine. Put it in a clean, air-tight container and bring it with you. I don’t care what kind of container it is, just make sure it’s good and clean and it’s got a good-fitting lid on it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in for birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah. If the test would become negative, what could we do is schedule you. We can’t do anything on Monday because we don’t have a nurse practitioner here on Mondays. But what we could do is get you in here, then we could set up an appointment for you.

CALLER: Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through this again.

CALLER: Right, right. Yeah. My suggestion would be that’s what you need to do.

CALLER: All right. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, no. Everything here is confidential whether you’re 15 or you’re 82. Everything here is confidential. So no. No one would know. We would not be calling your parents or anything of that nature.

CALLER: So let me call my boyfriend and see. Could I call you back? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name’s Beth. I penciled you in, and see if that will be okay. If it won’t, then you can call me back and see what else we can do for you, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: I just called another place yesterday, and they told me to call you guys. So I was just making sure I called the right people. Do you know how much that cost?

CLINIC: Between 5 and 14 weeks it’s $395. Okay?

CALLER: Well, like my last period was like the 14th of December. Do you know how many weeks that would be?

CLINIC: December 14th and today is February 20th. You’re about nine-and-a-half weeks.

CALLER: So how much would that be.

CLINIC: Three hundred and ninety-five dollars.

CALLER: Well, my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to do that?

CLINIC: No, he’s not old enough to sign for you. You would have to have your parents.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have my parents know?

CLINIC: No —

CALLER: Because they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: — it’s a state law. And the only way around that state law is to go to court in front of a judge. It’s called judicial bypass. And you would explain to a judge why you couldn’t tell your parents that you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Would he say that it’s all right?

CLINIC: Well, it depends. He could or he couldn’t. Where are you calling from?

CALLER: I’m in Forest Park.

CLINIC: He could or he could say no, and you have to tell your parents. The law in Ohio is parental notification. They can’t say yes or they can’t say no, they just have to be made aware. Okay?

CALLER: Well, they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Right. Well, the only other step you have, ma’am, is to go to court. And that means that a judge will make that decision. You will have to speak with our social worker, and they would set you up with an attorney, and you will go to court and speak to the judge.

CALLER: Does it cost anything for an attorney?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. No. That’s the only other way around your parents not knowing.

CALLER: Would they have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: About your boyfriend? It’s a possibility. I don’t know exactly what questions that the judge asks. I don’t know.

CALLER: Well, would you have to say anything about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: If your boyfriend’s 22 and you’re 14? Um-hmm.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Well, because —

CALLER: What do you mean? Why would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, because you’re 14 and he’s 22.

CALLER: Is there something wrong with that?

CLINIC: Is there something wrong with a 22-year-old being with a 14-year-old? He’s a grown man and you’re a minor.

CALLER: Yeah, but we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m not going to argue with you about it. I’m just saying that is against the law, but that’s only between you and whoever else you tell.

CALLER: Well, could we get in trouble? Like what would happen?

CLINIC: You possibly could. He possibly could.

CALLER: What kind of trouble? What could happen?

CLINIC: He could go to jail.

CALLER: He could go to jail?

CLINIC: Yeah, for statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. We’re in love.

CLINIC: Okay. I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know. I’m just telling you, that’s the repercussions. That’s what could happen, if somebody took it that far.

CALLER: Well, would it be all right if he brought me in to get the pregnancy test? Because I don’t know how else I would get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, he can take you to get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, would he get in trouble if he brought me?

CLINIC: Would he get in trouble if he brought you to get a pregnancy test? It depends on whatever you tell people. I mean, it depends on what you say to people.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, what should I say?

CLINIC: I can’t tell you what (chuckle) — I can’t tell you want to say. I can only tell you if you need a pregnancy test. And if you go in and someone asks you, and whatever you tell them, they’ll do whatever based on the information that you give them. Okay?

CALLER: But you wouldn’t tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t know you, so I couldn’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Well, if I did come in for a pregnancy test, and say it was negative and I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s done in our medical clinic.

CALLER: Well, would I have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Would you have to tell your parents you’re on birth control? Uh-uh, no. How do you know you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had my — I missed my period.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. But you want to take a test first, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: What’s your name? Could I call you back?

CLINIC: Well, I don’t work where the pregnancy tests are, so you need to call that clinic. Let me give you that number– 287-6484

CALLER: But if my boyfriend had any questions, could I call and ask you?

CLINIC: Anybody can help you.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Connie.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thank you.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. I can give you a number if you’d like.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There’s really on one site in Dayton. But they can advise you otherwise. Are you ready?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: The number is 1-800-672-6810.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, can I ask a question real quick?

CLINIC: Go right ahead.

CALLER: Well, it’s just my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents, but my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of whatever they have to do so they don’t have to find out?

CLINIC: No. There’s really — I mean, there’s a lot of laws involved. You realize your relationship with your boyfriend is illegal?

CALLER: What do you mean? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: If you’re only 14 and your boyfriend’s 22, it’s statutory rape.

CALLER: What is that? I don’t understand. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well, I mean, that’s something you’d have to talk to your parents about.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents. They hate him.

CLINIC: Well, I mean, the laws are the laws. You’ll have to call the abortion clinic, but he won’t be able to take care of it. They will have to advise your parents.

CALLER: So there’s no way not to tell them at all?

CLINIC: There’s stuff you can go through with the courts, but you’ll need to talk with them about that. We don’t do that here.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what could happen to him?

CLINIC: Different things, but like I said you need to talk with the abortion clinic. We don’t do that stuff here.

CALLER: Oh. Well, but — he’s, he loves me. We’re — I don’t understand.

CLINIC: Yeah. Like I said, the laws are the laws. We don’t deal with that here, so you’ll need to talk with them.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right if he took me? Because I don’t know how else I would get there.

CLINIC: You’ll have to call them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, my friend just told me to go to you guys, so could I get like a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: You could if you wanted to.

CALLER: Okay. Would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, no. Everything we do is confidential.

CALLER: Would you guys have to say anything about my boyfriend if that was the only way I could get there?

CLINIC: If you don’t mention it, there’s nothing that we can do. I mean, the forms that we have you fill out for pregnancy testing, it doesn’t ask the age of your partner.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So. That’s something that is confidential, but if you would like to come for a pregnancy test they’re $12 unless you have a medical card.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like after the pregnancy test if it was negative, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody about that at all?

CLINIC: About the birth control?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. So well, is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Gail.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not at this Planned Parenthood. The one in Cincinnati does and Woman’s Med does.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want the Woman’s Med in Dayton?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. That number is 293-3917.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know — like my friend told me that like since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents, but is it okay — like my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: Well, if he’s 22, in that situation they may want to arrest him. How old are you? 14?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March, but you have to arrest him?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Simply because that’s a law. That’s statutory rape.

CALLER: What could happen to him? Like – we’re in love. He can’t be arrested.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I’m just letting you know if you took him, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now do you have an aunt?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Or someone who’s 18 — or 21. That’s the age.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: Yeah. I understand that. But you’re just 14, sweetheart, okay?

CALLER: But he can’t take care of that?

CLINIC: No. Well, he wouldn’t be the ideal person. It has to be a relative.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Now do you know anyone that’s a relative that you can tell?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you’re going to have to stand in front of the court before you can have that abortion also to get permission granted, and you have to speak in front of a judge and let him know that, you know, the reason why you don’t think you’re ready for this child or you know —

CALLER: Well, does the court have to know about him?

CLINIC: That’s if you tell them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But yet and still, you need a relative. That’s the point that you’re missing.

CALLER: But they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, there is a way they can find out.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: He has to be a relative — an uncle or aunt.

CALLER: But I don’t have anybody. It’s just me and my parents.

CLINIC: You have grandparents?

CALLER: No. Well, how do I go to the court? What do I do?

CLINIC: You have to stand in front of a judge in order to grant you an abortion. Okay?

CALLER: Well, how would I get there?

CLINIC: You go downtown. Downtown at the court building for juvenile, okay? And you will speak to a judge there.

CALLER: Do I need a lawyer or anything?

CLINIC: Need a what, sweetie?

CALLER: A lawyer?

CLINIC: No. Well, they’re appoint you someone, you know, if you cannot pay. It’s always a person there that can represent you, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: Now is there any way you can get here so I can give you information on that?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Or can I mail it to you? Or what do you want me to do?

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend to see when he could take me, but I don’t have any other way to get there besides. But is it all right if he brings me?

CLINIC: It’s who?

CALLER: My boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yeah, he can pick up that pamphlet. I will give it to you. I want you to read over it. And both of you, so you’ll understand where you stand at, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. So if he can come up and pick it up, I’ll have that ready for him.

CALLER: But you’re sure you don’t have to tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: No. Well, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. I can just give it to him, and he can go ahead and you guys can follow what the pamphlet says. But like I said, you are going to need a relative or someone 21, okay? It states that. So you read over it and get an understanding. If you have any more questions, feel free to call me back.

CALLER: Okay. Well I was actually wondering like if you guys do the pregnancy tests there.

CLINIC: Yeah. We do the pregnancy tests. I can do a pregnancy test, but it will run you $12.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you missed several periods, or —

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Yeah. You would need a pregnancy test. Your periods used to come regular each month?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you’re going to need a pregnancy test so —

CALLER: Would it be all right if he brought me for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine, sweetie.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: If the pregnancy test was negative do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do have birth control.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to — yeah. Because we just don’t want to go through all this again.

CLINIC: I understand. We can set you up an appointment after we get the results from the pregnancy test, and if it’s negative you can be seen here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We do a complete examination on you with your pap smear and so forth, and then we’ll let you know when your periods do start that you should start taking your birth control pills the Sunday following your menses. Okay? We will explain everything to you.

CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Well, the thing is, okay, he’s 22. If he brings you up here — I am going to talk to you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And help you out as much as I can in this situation. Now if you are pregnant then that’s a different story, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So let’s start with the pregnancy test first, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? What is your name, so I can look forward? Just your first name.

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: Christine? Okay. Christine, can you make it here this morning?

CALLER: No. I’d have to — he’s at work today, so.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. When can you make it? Can you make it some time this week?

CALLER: I think so.

CLINIC: If you’re in school I can give you a slip that stated that —

CALLER: I’m homeschooled, so.

CLINIC: Oh, you’re homeschooled? Okay. Well, if you can make it here sometime this week, Christine, we can see you and do the, start with the pregnancy test.

CALLER: But you’re sure you won’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Well, at this time I would not tell anybody, at this time, Christine.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Now you have to look at the situation if it is positive. Okay?

CALLER: Well, so you’d have to tell someone if it was positive?

CLINIC: Well, there’s a guideline that any, you know, teenager with him being 22 years old that’s a big age difference, Christine.

CALLER: Yeah, but we’re in love. I don’t —

CLINIC: I understand that you’re in love, but the thing is, that is like statutory rape, okay? And if you were my daughter I wouldn’t want you to be dating a boyfriend that that’s old. You know? That’s too old, sweetie, okay? So I’m going to talk to you. All I want you to do is come in this week and let’s get that pregnancy test taken, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? My name is Gail, so you can call here and let me know when you’re going to come in and do the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then we’ll go from then on.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Okay, Christine?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Oh, you’re so welcome. Have a good day.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Yeah. The Women’s Centers in Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus. Do you need a number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’ll look it up for you. The one in Dayton is 1-800-672-6810.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it okay if I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, it’s just, my friend told me that my parents have to sign for it, but my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Nope. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, no. You’ve got to have parental consent.

CALLER: But they can’t find out at all because — well, they can’t find out. They don’t know we’re having sex. And they would be furious.

CLINIC: I know, but that’s a surgical procedure, so they’re going to — what you’ll need to do is call the termination clinic and they’ll give you some counseling on what you need to do and how to go through that. But at this point —

CALLER: If I go there, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Yeah. Because they have to have parental consent for that type of procedure.

CALLER: But is there any way not — like, like — my friend had a lawyer one time when she, she told me that —

CLINIC: That’s if you can prove that they’re — that the parents would be abusive to the patient or that there would be a major problem going on there.

CALLER: Well, would I be able to do that at all?

CLINIC: Well, you need to talk to that clinic in regards to that. But do you know that, at your age at 14, the age of your partner, that that’s an offense?

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: That’s illegal.

CALLER: What could happen to him?

CLINIC: That’s considered rape.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married. There’s — I don’t understand.

CLINIC: Right. It’s against the law. That age span that’s there. So they may question that.

CALLER: Well, what could happen to him?

CLINIC: He would probably he would have charges against him with the police.

CALLER: With the police?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Well, what would — what could I do?

CLINIC: Well, probably what you need to do first is you need to call the Women’s Center and they will be very confidential, and talk to them as far as the procedure.

CALLER: Well, are they going to tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: Yeah. The law states that they would have to report it, yes.

CALLER: But I can’t — they can’t say anything. I mean, well, he can’t get in trouble. What do you mean?

CLINIC: Well, that’s against the law.

CALLER: But —

CLINIC: For a 14-year-old to have sex with a 21-year-old.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? I mean — I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Well, you need to go in and get some counseling, hon. What you need to do is call them and go and get some counseling.

CALLER: But if I go in there they’re going to send my boyfriend to jail?

CLINIC: Well, they’re going to counsel you and let you know what needs to be done.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want to go in and not have a boyfriend anymore.

CLINIC: Well, do you want to continue the pregnancy?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: And eventually someone’s going to find out about the partner and the age.

CALLER: Well, my parents know him. They just really don’t like him.

CLINIC: Well, you need to get some counseling, so you probably need to call them and get in and get scheduled.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I come into there and get a pregnancy test because it’s — like my friend told me to go to you guys.

CLINIC: You haven’t even had a pregnancy test done yet to prove that it’s a positive pregnancy?

CALLER: Well, no. I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But I didn’t know if I did it right.

CLINIC: Okay. What you would need to do is bring in a first-morning urine specimen in a container.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And it’s $12 for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody about my boyfriend if I came in there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, um, (sigh) okay. Well, would you have to have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah? Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test was negative would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah, still I would. We’d have to report it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Beth.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. Did you want some phone numbers of some areas?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Just hold, please. Okay, I have the Women’s Med Center on East Route Road in (Caring?). That’s 1-800-672-6810. And I have one in Columbus which is 1-800-282-9490. And one in Cincinnati which is 513-281-0001.

CLINIC: Okay. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want your parents to know?

CALLER: Not at all.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, yours is different. What county do you live in?

CALLER: Well, I live in New Lebanon.

CLINIC: What county?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here.

CLINIC: Okay. You need to find out what county you live in so that you can call the juvenile court.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And what you need to do is request for a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: That means that the judge will okay you for a termination without your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Do I have to get a lawyer?

CLINIC: No. They’ll take care of it all for you. But you need to find out what county you live in. I can give you the numbers.

CALLER: Well, what if the judge says no?

CLINIC: I don’t — you’ll have to call there. It’s nothing to do with me. I mean, it’s out of our hands because of your age. You need to go through the court system.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would they ask about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t know. You’re going to have to call them and ask.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me just give you the information. It says “teens under the age of 18 years old must have parents’ permission before getting a termination in the state of Ohio unless a court has decided differently. That is called a judicial bypass. You may go to the court in the county where you live” — so it’s important that you find out what county you live in — “next to where you live or where the abortion will be performed. If you are considering a termination without telling your parents, a lawyer will be appointed to represent you in court at no cost to you.”

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But let me give you the number of the Montgomery County Juvenile Court. It’s 937-225-4141.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And I just ask to talk about —

CLINIC: You tell them that you would like to discuss a judicial bypass for a termination.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you guys like do pregnancy tests there? Like my friend told me to call you guys, so.

CLINIC: We do pregnancy tests. It’s $12 unless you have a medical card or proof of income. Have you done a pregnancy test already?

CALLER: Well, I did a home pregnancy test over the weekend, but I don’t know if I did it right.

CLINIC: Well, we can do another one. It’s $12. You can come in this afternoon between 1;00 and 4:00.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me and is there with me?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. It’s $12 unless you have a medical card or proof of income.

CALLER: Well, what do you mean about the income?

CLINIC: You know, proof of income.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. So that would be $12.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like if my boyfriend pays for it?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like if the pregnancy test was negative could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: We’d have to make you an appointment for a full pap, a pelvic and a breast exam. It wouldn’t be today. We’d just make you an appointment to come back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you guys could do birth control there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: That’s correct.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Contact Dayton.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Contact Dayton Abortion Clinic.

CALLER: Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: 1-800-672-6810.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I ask a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Well, it’s just, my friend told me that my parents have to sign for something. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of that?

CLINIC: I doubt it.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Because there’s just no way my parents can find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, if you’re under 18 years old —

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Well, you’re going to need parental consent.

CALLER: Is there any way not to do that because I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: No, ma’am. You’re going to have to have parental consent. You’re just a minor.

CALLER: Okay. Well, there’s just no way they can find out. Like what can I do?

CLINIC: Nothing. They’re going to have to find out. If you’re trying to get an abortion and you’re 14 years old, and you’re pregnant by a 22-year-old — first of all, that’s rape.

CALLER: But we’re in love. I don’t understand. That can’t be rape. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Law is rape. That is rape by law.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Well, you need to talk to your parents because you can’t get an abortion without their consent.

CALLER: But is it all right like if I came in there to get like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can do it Wednesday, Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 —

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. Well, depending on the type of information that you give us, yeah, we will have to turn him over to the authorities.

CALLER: But what if I just didn’t say anything?

CLINIC: That would be up to you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, so like if I didn’t say anything it would be all right and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, you just need to quit feeding me information now.

CALLER: Oh. All right. Well, like say the pregnancy test was negative. Do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I call you back? Like I need to see if my boyfriend had any other questions. But could I call you back and talk to you?

CLINIC: You absolutely sure can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Shawn (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

(dialing sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is April.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that might?

CLINIC: You need to look in the phone book. You can probably look under “abortions,” and there’s listings in Columbus.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys like do the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We can do that.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be a specific age for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: No. But if you are pregnant and to have an abortion you do have to let your parents know.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Like my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do whatever they have to do?

CLINIC: No. No. You’re under age. You have to have your parents’ consent for an abortion.

CALLER: There’s just no way they can find out though. Like I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Honey, you have to let them know if you’re going to have an abortion. They have to have — I mean, they have their consent in order to do that procedure for you.

CALLER: Well, my friend said something about getting like a lawyer or something. Could I do that?

CLINIC: You could file for an emancipated minor.

CALLER: Yeah? What does that involve?

CLINIC: You’d probably have to talk to an attorney.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do I have to — how do I pay for that?

CLINIC: With — honey, I don’t know how that works with you being underage. I’m really not sure. I would just contact an attorney’s office and ask a few general questions about it and then go from there.

CALLER: Would they have to — so like, well could I come in there and get a pregnancy test to see?

CLINIC: Yeah. You’re only 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And he’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: That, under Ohio law, is a statutory rape.

CALLER: What is that? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: He could get in a bunch of trouble because you’re way underage and —

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: But that doesn’t matter. Your ages is too far apart. H’s 22 and you’re 13.

CALLER: What could happen to him?

CLINIC: He could possibly go to jail.

CALLER: Well, he could go to jail? Like, well, who’s going to find out or anything? Like —

CLINIC: If you’re going to a lawyer and see about getting an abortion, the lawyer’s going to know for one.

CALLER: Oh, and he would have to send him to jail?

CLINIC: Well, they would end up being charges pressed.

CALLER: Well, what could I do? Like would it be better just not to say anything about him?

CLINIC: Why don’t you come in and take the pregnancy test, and then you’re going to have to end up talking to your parents.

CALLER: But he’s going to — I can’t tell my parents, and he’s the only way that I could get there.

CLINIC: He can bring you in.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to say anything about him?

CLINIC: No. We won’t say anything. But I mean, you’re going to end up having to tell your parents. Go ahead and come in and do the pregnancy test, and we’ll talk to you from there. Okay?

CALLER: Well, what if I wasn’t pregnant? Do you guys like —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: You wouldn’t have to say anything to anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: And would you have to have tell anybody that I was on birth control or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So yo wouldn’t have to say anything about my boyfriend if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have to get here before noon to do the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Is there any other day? Like my boyfriend’s at work.

CLINIC: Unless you can come to Athens.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’re open Monday through Friday in Athens. You can come there any time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: I’ll talk to him and see. All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Come on in for the pregnancy test, and then we’ll work with you from there, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
