CLINIC: Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: I can give you their number. Their number is 440-232-9732.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know, I’m just worried because like, well I’m going to be 14 years old next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of everything and he wouldn’t have to —

CLINIC: No, you actually need a parent. So you would actually need — his mother or your mom.

CALLER: Oh. Well, he lives on his own. He doesn’t live with his parents. And I can’t tell my parents at all. I mean, if they found out I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: I can give you the number to where that you can go in front of a judge about a judicial bypass and talk to the judge and he might grant it for you to get the abortion without telling your parents.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t think there’s a fee for that. You would just have to pay for the abortion.

CALLER: Oh. Well, does he ever not grant that?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. I guess it depends on the situation.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to make sure?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. You can do that. We’re here from 12 to 6:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell my parents I was getting a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, the thing is me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want my parents to know anything about all this. But if he was paying for it, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Paying for what, the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Actually, since you’re 14 it’s covered under a program that we have, so the pregnancy test would be free.

CALLER: Well, I’m not 14 yet. Like I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Right, so you’re 13. It’s covered.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would anybody have to know about me and my boyfriend though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control — just so that we don’t have to go through all this again?

CLINIC: Yes. We would, once you come in here we’ll give you all the information in regards to birth control and set you up to get on birth control if you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have to tell anybody about birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, another thing — well I can’t drive to pick up like birth control pills. Would my boyfriend be able to pick them up?

CLINIC: We have a mailing order form system. You can come and pick them up or you can get them mailed to his house.

CALLER: I could get them mailed to his house?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Or you can come in and pick them up.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Since you’re 14 years old — do you work?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: It’s covered under this program that we have, and all you have to do is leave a donation towards your visit.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to schedule an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I need to call my boyfriend and see, but can I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Tamika.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: You’d have to call one of the offices in Columbus.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: You’d have to refer to the yellow pages.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like, well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Your parents, to have anything, to have any procedure done like that under the age of 18 your parents have to sign no matter what.

CALLER: Oh. So there’s no way to not have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. But I — could I come in there for a pregnancy test? I just, I’m scared about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Yeah. Can you come in today like at 3:00?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I think so. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see, but would you have to tell my parents about that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Would it be all right if my boyfriend was there with me?

CLINIC: That would be fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, we were talking about all this and we don’t want my parents to know about any of this. So —

CLINIC: Well, if you have a positive pregnancy test, in order to have an abortion done you have to tell your parents, regardless.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though just so that —

CLINIC: You’d have to schedule another appointment to come in and get an exam and stuff done.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me see if I can come in today. What was your name so I can call you back?

CLINIC: I’m the only one here, so it’s okay. You can come in at 3:00 if you can. If not, that’s okay.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So just call my boyfriend and then call you back?

CLINIC: You don’t have to call me back. You can just come in at 3:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, what if I couldn’t come in? Could I —

CLINIC: That’s okay.

CALLER: Well, are you guys open tomorrow?

CLINIC: No. I won’t be open again until Monday.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, are you going to be there on Monday?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. This is Deborah. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this clinic. They do it on the Bradford Clinic on Rockside Road.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yes, I do if I can find it. Okay, the phone number is 440-232-9732.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, I’m just worried about all this because like — well, I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. In the state of Ohio the way things are legally that’s not going to — he would not be able to sign off for that. But there are things, something called a juvenile bypass. What you need to do is go into one of the clinics, into one of our clinics, and take a pregnancy test so you have a piece of paper, a statement of pregnancy, and they can give you all the information —

CALLER: Can I come in there for that?

CLINIC: You can do that here, yes.

CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: We can give you all the information on how to go about it.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does that cost anything?

CLINIC: Actually — could you hold on a moment?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: (music) Okay. Ma’am, yes, the pregnancy test is going to be $10.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. That is nobody’s business but yours.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We have strict confidentiality protocol.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but would you have to tell anybody that he was there and would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No. I mean, like I said, once again, it’s 100 percent confidentiality. No one could call up here, no one could come in here and ask if you were a patient or that if you had ever been here, anything. It’s none of their business. It’s complete confidentiality.

CALLER: Okay. So I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do. But so is it possible that I could be pregnant?

CLINIC: I mean, if you’ve had sex, yes. I mean, there’s always a possibility.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I mean, no matter what. I mean, if you’ve had intercourse there’s a possibility of pregnancy.

CALLER: Oh. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. You’d have to make an appointment for that, but yes you could.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But what I would advise you to do is to come in for a pregnancy test and see what’s going on. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control could like my boyfriend come in and pick up the pills?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just I cant’ drive yet, so.

CLINIC: No. Actually he cannot. We cannot give pills to anyone else but him (sic), and you have to see the clinician so you can get a prescription from her. We can’t honor somebody else’s prescription.

CALLER: Well, what about like refills or anything?

CLINIC: We cannot do that. It has to be from us.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So you can walk in for the pregnancy test, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we’re open until 8:00 p.m.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What was your name again?

CLINIC: Deborah.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

If you know the extension of the party you wish to reach, you may dial it now. For directory of extensions press 7. For information about family planning services, press 1. For information about methods of payment, press 2. For information about abortion services, press 4. If you are a current patient — (dial sound) Central Ohio Women’s Center, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio, provides abortion up to 13 weeks counted from the first day of your last period. Patients may choose surgical abortion with either local anesthesia or intravenous sedation or medical abortion with the abortion medication methotrex. The state of Ohio requires a two-step process to obtain a legal abortion. The first step is called an education visit. At the appointment, the patient has an ultrasound examination to determine how far along she is in the pregnancy, has one tube of blood drawn and meets one-on-one with a staffmember to discuss her options and receive educational materials. The education visit can take up to two hours, so plan your time accordingly. The law requires a 24-hour waiting period between the education visit and the procedure. At the end of the education visit, you may choose to schedule the abortion procedure. We charge $325 for an abortion with local anesthesia, $425 for an abortion with IV sedation, and $450 for a medical abortion with minimum dosage. $100 must be paid at the time of the education visit. Payment must be made by money order or credit card. Discounts and payment plans are not available. If you are under the age of 18 and want to have an abortion without your parents consent, we can give you information about judicial bypass during your education visit. To schedule an education visit hang up and dial 614-222-3531, and press zero. Stay on the line to return to the main menu, or press zero to speak to a staffperson. (dial sound) One moment, please. (music) (ringing 3X)

CLINIC: This is Betty. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t at this clinic.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know anybody that does?

CLINIC: Yeah, we do at our East Clinic. That’s 3211 East Main Street. You want me to transfer you out there?

CALLER: Well, no. I just wanted to ask some quick questions actually.

CLINIC: Okay, you need to call them, honey, because I can’t answer any of those questions.

CALLER: Oh, it’s just my friend told me to call and talk to you guys.

CLINIC: Okay, well, hold on and I’ll let you talk to them.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Hold on.

(ringing 9X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood East. Megan speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It goes anywhere from $325 to $450.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that, well since I’m going to be like 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: No. You’ll have to go get what’s called a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. What is that?

CLINIC: You’re going to have to stand in front of a judge, and he’s going to ask you some questions, and you have to answer them, and then he’ll either grant or deny you permission.

CALLER: Okay. Does he usually grant it?

CLINIC: Yeah. I haven’t seen anybody yet that got denied.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do I need like a lawyer for that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want to schedule your education appointment?

CALLER: Well, I just was wondering — like the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 21. And I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Okay. You need to take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Do I come in there for that?

CLINIC: You can if you would like.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we only go to 12 weeks, 6 days.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you’re pushing the border here.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? So you’ll need to get in and get a pregnancy test and do your education quickly.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, it’s just I can’t drive yet, but my boyfriend said he would bring me and take care of everything. Would that be all right if he pays for everything and was there with me?

CLINIC: Yes, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we were talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would you have to have him sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CLINIC: Nope. Have to have parental consent when you’re a minor.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents at all because if they found out I mean I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: Well, what you need to do is you need to call and talk with the termination clinic. And they may have some legal ways to go about not doing that. But you need to talk to them. They do all that for you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m scared.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not here.

CALLER: Well, do you know of anyplace that does?

CALLER: Yeah. Cincinnati.

CALLER: Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. Hang on for just a second, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. The phone number is 513-287-6488.

CALLER: Okay. I’m really scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever that is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You really need to call this number and talk to them, and ask them about that. I don’t know. I have somebody else here that can talk to who might know a little bit more. Could you hold for just a minute?

CALLER: Yeah.

(Pause)

RECORDING: — and meetings. If you’d like more information about our teaching tools, let us know when we return to the line.

Did you know that Planned Parenthood offers men’s healthcare services? We offer testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. We also offer —

CLINIC: Hi, this is Vicky the assistant manager. You had some questions?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering about getting an abortion. But my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents that I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: They do have to notify your parents, one of your parents. They don’t have to get their consent; they just have to talk to them on the phone.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell my parents? Well, if they found out I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: You got the number to Cincinnati?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You just need to call them, and they can talk to you about what to do. Because we don’t deal with that here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: You’re not sure that you’re pregnant?

CALLER: No, I’m just really scared because my last period was December 14th.

CLINIC: Yes, you can come here. It would cost $6.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell anybody I was there for that?

CLINIC: No, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I would really want my boyfriend to be there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: He wouldn’t be able to come back with you, and we have to just take you back by yourself. He could come in and sit in the waiting room.

CALLER: He’s just worried that you guys would ask a lot of questions. Would you ask anything?

CLINIC: Well, no.

CALLER: Or have him sign anything?

CLINIC: No. No, not at all.

CALLER: Oh, okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there? It’s just I don’t want to have to worry about all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah, right, definitely. Do you live with him or not?

CALLER: No, I live with my parents.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, we can do that for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can come in. If you want to come in today you can.

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see. But are you guys open next week?

CLINIC: Yeah. We’re just open until 2 today. You wouldn’t need an appointment if you just want to come in for a pregnancy test. You can come in Monday anytime from 9 to 4, or Tuesday anytime from 12 to 6.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m not able to drive because I’m not old enough. But is it all right if my boyfriend picks up the pills after everything?

CLINIC: Yeah, as long as we — that’s down the road though. After we find out if you’re pregnant or not.

CALLER: But he’d be able to pick them up and that would be all right?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

Please hold while your call is being transferred to extension number 264.

(Short pause)

CLINIC: Thanks for calling. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. You have to call Bedford or Pre-Term.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Budford’s number is 440-232-9732. But their office is probably closed today.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I ask you a quick question then?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: Nope. Actually, you need parental consent, not even that they’re telling your parents but that your parents are consenting to it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to do that? Because if they found out I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: You can try to go — if you call Budford they’ll probably be able to tell you more about it. But you go in front of a judge and try to make your case that you’re responsible enough to make this decision on your own. The only problem with that is it usually takes a while. Do you know how far along you are?

CALLER: No. It’s just I’m really scared. The main reason why I’m scared about all this is because my last period was December 14th. So I don’t know.

CLINIC: December 14th. So you were probably — you’re at the end of your first trimester, between 10 and 11 weeks based on — that’s just a rough guess based on your last period. Bedford only does them up to 13 weeks. Pre-Term is the other clinic, and they’ll do the second trimester abortion. But I don’t know if you can go before the judge and do a second trimester. I don’t know. Because we don’t do them here so I don’t really know a whole lot about them.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah, they’re $10.

CALLER: I would really like it if my boyfriend was there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: He’s just worried that you guys would ask about him. Would I have to tell anybody about him or anything?

CLINIC: Do your parents — I mean, It doesn’t matter to us.

CALLER: Oh, okay. What do you mean?

CLINIC: That he’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: The clinician might lecture you, but I’m not going to say anything.

CALLER: Say that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah, but you’d have to make an appointment for that.

CALLER: If I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So my parents wouldn’t have to know anything at all?

CLINIC: Nope, not about birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions — I need to talk to my boyfriend and see, but could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Meagan. I’m the only one here today. In fact, we’re technically closed today, but I’ll be here until probably about 11:30 if you want to come and get that pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: How long does it take?

CLINIC: Just a couple minutes. It’s just a urine test.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And what it test for is a hormone that only pregnant women produce. So it’s pretty hard to get a false positive.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 5x)

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Let me give you a couple numbers. I’m not suppose to, but what the heck. There’s nobody else here. Don’t tell anybody I gave them to you. Are you ready?

CALLER: Um-hmm.

CLINIC: Mahoney Women’s Center in Youngstown, 1-800-441-9912; Akron Women’s Clinic, 1-800-362-9150; Pre-Term in Cleveland, 1-800-334-7371.

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just really scared because my friend —

CLINIC: You know what? Hold on one second, and I’ll talk to you, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you so much for holding. You have an appointment on the 26th that you need to change, right?

CALLER: I was the last person you were talking to.

CLINIC: Oh God, I’m sorry.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Go ahead. You wanted to ask me a question?

CALLER: Yeah. I was just wondering — my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: Nope, nope.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yep. In Ohio there’s a parental notification law. So they would notify your parents. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Ah boy. Call the first one I gave you and tell them what your problem is. They may be able to help you through that some way, but you need to call and tell them that, okay?

CALLER: All right. I wasn’t really sure if I’m pregnant. I’m just really scared because my last period was December 14th, and I’m usually pretty regular.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: I don’t have anything until Tuesday. The only time I could see you is Tuesday at 9:15.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What’s your first name?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: When you wake up Tuesday you need to catch a few drops of your first morning urine and bring that with you. And it cost $9.

CALLER: Okay. I’d really feel better if my boyfriend was there. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Well, he can come with you if you want.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: We do but not on that day. You’d have to make another appointment to come back.

CALLER: Okay. But does anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Can I call you back after I talk to my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Yeah, sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Peggy.

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: All right. Um-hmm. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
