CLINIC: Coney Island Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys to abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: No? Do you know where I should go for that?

CLINIC: (Sigh) What you need to do is you need to have a confirmation from a doctor or clinic saying that you are indeed pregnant. And then if you came here and had that test done then we would give you the counseling and names of places you could go. Have you already had that done somewhere else?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Then that’s what you need to do for your first step, is make that appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to do that here?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend because he’s the one that would bring me.

CLINIC: All right. So what you need is a pregnancy test. And then if you are indeed pregnant, they will tell you what your options are and where you can go.

CALLER: Is there any age limit for that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: That’s all right?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: They wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: Everything that’s done here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. My parents can’t find out at all. My boyfriend’s 22. And we’re going to get married, but my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: But there’s no way that anybody would find out at all, right?

CLINIC: Not to the best of my knowledge. No one from here would tell anyone anything. Your visit here is confidential.

CALLER: You guys do birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And it’s all right to get that?

CLINIC: Let’s say you’re not pregnant, or you are pregnant and you go have a termination elsewhere and you come back here as a patient, you would need to have a full exam. And at your current age, there would be no charge to you. And then they would get you started on appropriate birth control.

CALLER: Okay. But they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control either?

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Is it okay if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: You can. I’m only here to 5 myself. All you have to do is say you’d like a pregnancy — you don’t even have to go into all this. You just you’d like to make an appointment for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Is it okay, if my boyfriend has questions, if I call you back —

CLINIC: He can come with you if you’d like.

CALLER: Okay. But if he wanted to talk to someone over the phone too, could he talk to you too?

CLINIC: Well, I don’t really do any of the counseling, so I don’t have any — I can just make you an appointment. And as much as we’ve discussed, you and I just now, is really all that I would be able to talk to you about.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: But you can certainly bring him with you. And if you want, he can come even in the room with you, and he can listen to everything that the nurse says. That’s entirely up to you.

CALLER: I just don’t want to talk to a whole bunch of people about this.

CLINIC: That’s fine. And that’s what we do here. So you don’t need to feel awkward doing it. As I said, if you want to make an appointment right now, I’ll help you do that. If you want to talk to him and call back, I’m here until 5, and my name’s Linda. Or you can call tomorrow between 8:30 and 5, and I’ll be here then too. Or you can just call any time and ask for a pregnancy appointment. You don’t have to tell anybody any of the rest of this.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Bye.
