CLINIC: Hello. Doctor’s office. Lorraine speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much that costs?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along. Up until the 12th week it’s $395 plus $20 for lab fee, and after 12 weeks it goes up per week.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: Well, one, we do it by how far along — when was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. So at this point you would be almost 9 weeks from the first day of your last period.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that would be $415 plus if you wanted to buy the medications here it’s an additional $25, so it would be $440.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just — the thing is I’m going to be 14 on the 19th, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s —

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: — 22. Could he just sign and take care of everything?

CLINIC: No. We do not have to inform your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No matter how old you are.

CALLER: But is it all right if my boyfriend takes care of everything?

CLINIC: Right. You’re going to be 14?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: And he’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Your parents know this?

CALLER: Well, they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, they know we’re going out.

CLINIC: Oh. Okay. No. We definitely can see you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And how would that be paid for?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay it with cash.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. I definitely can give you an appointment if you want us, you know — we have appointments the rest of the week Thursday morning, Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

CALLER: Okay. What time on Saturday?

CLINIC: We schedule appointments between 7:30 and 9:45.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The earlier the better.

CALLER: Okay. If he came in with me would that be all right?

CLINIC: He can come in to only the nonmedical areas.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Which is when you give the money, when he would give the money, and for counseling.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All the other areas you would have to go in by yourself.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well it’s just, we were talking about all this and he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was signing anything — like if hew as paying for everything would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Is he paying cash?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: No. He doesn’t have to sign for a thing, and it’s very confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We don’t even confirm appointments, and if somebody calls for you that is not on the list of the escorts we don’t give them any information unless we clear it with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So as far as anybody else could know, we never heard of you.

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: No. Then you would have to go to the gynecology for an exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you taken a pregnancy test at all?

CALLER: Well, no, I just haven’t had my period in awhile, and I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to come in just to take a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah. Is it all right to come in on Saturday for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. You can come in tomorrow.

CALLER: It’s just, the thing is my boyfriend has an 8 to 5 job, so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: And he would be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: I see. Okay. You know what? Let’s schedule you for Saturday and we’ll schedule you in case you are with an appointment, and if you’re not then all you have to do is pay $25. If you are, then you pay for the procedure. This way at least you’ll have it done if you are.

CALLER: Okay. So what time do you have Saturday?

CLINIC: Could you get here as early as 8:15?

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend and call you right back. Is that okay?

CLINIC: That’s no problem. My name is Lorraine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you are?

CALLER: I’m Lisa.

CLINIC: Lisa?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, great. I’ll expect to hear from you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Dr. Cousins Office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much that costs?

CLINIC: Are you covered by any insurance or Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if you are covered by insurance most of the time that does cover. So like if you want to take his money, go shopping, turn it into your insurance, you could do that.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, the thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. So my boyfriend is 22, so he said that he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay. You don’t have to tell your parents, okay? First of all, you don’t have to have your parents’ permission in New York state. When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. Dr. Cousins does abortions here in the office three days a week.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: One visit. You would be here quite awhile, about four hours.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And what else would you like to know?

CALLER: Well, it’s just —

CLINIC: If you’re paying for it — you don’t know your blood type, do you?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. If you would come in between now and the 21st, the most it would be would be $390.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? There’s a chance it would be less than that, but I don’t know your blood type. That’s part of our lab work that we do.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet. But do you think that there’d be any way that I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: Well, you’ve missed your period.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Twice.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Has that ever happened?

CALLER: Well, not really.

CLINIC: Okay. Any tenderness in your breasts, any nausea, any smell problems like certain things make you kind of want to gag?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Do you go to the bathroom a lot more than usual?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You have none of those symptoms.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Well, there’s a chance you couldn’t be. Are you on any new kind of diet or exercise program?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Any medications?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, I’d say it’s 50/50.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Sure. Where are you coming from?

CALLER: And I’m visiting my friend in Vestal. So.

CLINIC: Do you know where we are?

CALLER: Well, she does, so. But if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: We would do that at a separate time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because we would have to examine you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we just can’t hand them out to everybody. You know, there are some health risks involved.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Depending on your family history and such. So you would have to be examined first. But depending on what the test results shows, we could set that up too.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay for everything. He just — we just don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. So you guys wouldn’t tell anybody that we were there?

CLINIC: No. Why would we? What would we get out of that?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know. He just —

CLINIC: No doctor’s office can release information no matter what kind it is, without your permission.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Whether you have a nose job or an appendectomy or open heart.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know? If you choose not for anybody to know, they cannot release that — only to your insurance company and still with your permission.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just have a lot of questions I can’t think of right now, but —

CLINIC: Okay. Well, write them all down.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When did you think you’d want to have the pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Do you guys do it on Saturday or just Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday?

CLINIC: We’ll be here on Saturday. Actually I’ll be here between 10 and 2.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: That would probably be best. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Robin.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? If you chose to come in today, tomorrow or Thursday, come in like say after 4:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: My boyfriend works until 5:00 though, so.

CLINIC: So he has to bring you? The pregnancy test is free.

CALLER: Okay. He’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Okay. I was just thinking if you wanted to come in sooner and there was a chance to make you an appointment for this week. But that’s up to you.

CALLER: Can I make an appointment over the phone after I talk to him?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. Let me call him and call you back. Is that all right?

CLINIC: We couldn’t make the appointment until you had the pregnancy test done. You don’t need an appointment for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It would be like after 4:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Vicki (sp). How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — well, I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: The closest place would be Syracuse or Utica.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Do you need those phone numbers?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on for me. (pause) Okay, in Syracuse the number is 475-5525.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And in Utica it is 724-6146.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy to see if I was pregnant, just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: It’s just, the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because, well I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you come in — I don’t have anything today.

CALLER: Well, what time do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We do them all, I mean anytime during the day.

CALLER: Oh. Is it usually like by appointment?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh. Well, can I ask you real quick? I’m just worried because like my friend told me — well I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: And my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. We have a very strict confidentiality policy. We can’t tell anybody without your okay.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Can you come in next Friday?

CALLER: I think so, but I have to call my boyfriend to see. I mean, he’d be the only way I could — he’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you do 11:00? Can I put you in for that? and then have you call us back? Or I would like to reserve the spots for you, you know. I would hate to have you call back and say that, yes, you can and not have —

CALLER: Well, what time is it?

CLINIC: I have 11 or 1:00.

CALLER: Oh, today or next week?

CLINIC: Next Friday.

CALLER: Oh. I don’t know. Well, do you know — like if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You can. We would have to set you up with another appointment though.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We wouldn’t be able to do all of it on the same day.

CALLER: All right. But if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, it’s a — everything that we do here is on our confidentiality basis.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just worried about my parents finding out because like if they knew — like they know my boyfriend. They just don’t know that we’re having sex. But if they found out I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Yeah. Yeah.

CALLER: So they just can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Right. Yeah. We do have very strict confidentiality.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well —

CLINIC: Do you want to set up a time, or would you be able to give us a call back today, or —

CALLER: Well, how far are you from Watertown?

CLINIC: From Watertown?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Are you in Watertown?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, because we do have another clinic there.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want the phone number?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 788-8065.

CALLER: What’s it called?

CLINIC: It’s Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not in this office.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: You’d have to come in for an exam, and then you’d get a referral.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to do that? Do you want to come in?

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: I’m just worried about all this because well I’m going to be 14 this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Your parents would not be informed about that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No, your girlfriend’s not correct on that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I —

CLINIC: The best thing I would suggest that you do is to come in for an exam and start from square one and just take it from there.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just —

CLINIC: You want to do that?

CALLER: I’m just worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I don’t know what to do. Is it possible that I am not pregnant?

CLINIC: It could be possible. It could be anything really, but what you need to do is just to get tested first. So why don’t you do that, and —

CALLER: Could I come in there for that? I just didn’t know that the ones at the store were right.

CLINIC: Sure. No, you’re better off doing it that way. They are more accurate here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, how much do those cost?

CLINIC: I have to find that out for you. Can you hang on one second? (pause) Hello? You know, we have a teen clinic today from 2:30 to 5:00. Where are you from?

CALLER: I live in Liberty.

CLINIC: In Liberty? That would be free for you actually to come in for an exam for the test.

CALLER: Well, do I need an appointment?

CLINIC: No. You can walk in today anywhere from 2:30 to 5:00 today and it would be free.

CALLER: Okay, and nobody would have to know?

CLINIC: And nobody would know anything that you don’t want them to know.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: Would I get it like today or —

CLINIC: That would be determined from the doctor what she does with that.

CALLER: It’s just, we don’t want to have to —

CLINIC: According to the date of your last period is, okay? That would be my suggestion because that’s the best bet for you if money is a problem. That’s your option that you can come in anywhere from 2:30 to 5:00 today and it’s free because of where you live.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you’re under 19, so.

CALLER: Well, it’s just — okay. Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he was going to pay for everything like if I could get birth control or whatever, and — but he doesn’t want to have to sign anything because we don’t —

CLINIC: No. That, no. That wouldn’t be necessary, and if that were the case, if it was birth control after that, I think it’s around like $40.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I need to call him to see — do you know actually if I was on birth control — I just can’t drive yet. Would he be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. Sure, he would. You’d have to come in for the exam initially.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But then he can come in and pick up the pills for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just have a lot of questions, but —

CLINIC: That’s fine, and, then come in for that, just for that reason alone, even if you don’t want anything else done and you just want to talk to somebody.

CALLER: Well, could I talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Dawn.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for the Schenectady one?

CLINIC: Are you from Clifton Park?

CALLER: Well, no. I live in Sloansville.

CLINIC: Okay. What you can do is, you can have your visit here and we would send you there. Did you want to make an appointment here to see a counselor?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Could I — I’m just worried. Could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CLINIC: We’re a confidential service, so you are able to have services here confidentially. We don’t need to, because of the laws in New York state we do not notify your family.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Regardless of your age. Those are the laws in New York state. You don’t have to notify. We do provide that confidential service.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just that I haven’t had my period since like December 26, so that’s why I’m worried.

CLINIC: Okay. What we’ll need to do is schedule you for a pregnancy test with a counselor, okay?

CALLER: Okay. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: We go on a sliding fee scale. Do you have any type of insurance?

CALLER: No. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay. When you come on in, you’ll talk to the counselor about that and she will asses what category to put you in. There are also —

CALLER: What days do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: Usually on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Let me check. Can you hold on a minute? Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: Uh-uh.

CLINIC: (pause) Okay. The next appointment would be —

CLINIC: Yes, absolutely.

CLINIC: No. My goodness, no. (laughs)

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: These are confidential services, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend if — we were just talking about all this and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. If he was paying for it, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not. Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: What days do you have like next week for this, because I would have to call my boyfriend to see when he could get off work.

CLINIC: On a Friday I’ve got 8:00 to noon.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. Lisa speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. We refer you to Plattsburgh.

CALLER: To where?

CLINIC: Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Oh. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s 561-4430. But we do do the pregnancy test and all the exams that need to be done before the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried about all this because like, well my friend told me that since like — well I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: No. We don’t need any parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah, so you don’t — we won’t say anything to your parents unless you tell us to say something to your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: So, well, it’s just, the thing is that me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we didn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. But he said that he was going to pay for everything. Would that be all right if he was there?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. You can have whoever you want.

CALLER: Okay. But would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. We don’t need anybody’s signature but yours.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so what time do you normally do like pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We can do a pregnancy — I can do a pregnancy test for you tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Then we can do an exam for you on Monday, but we can do it all on Monday if you want to just come in the one time.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see, but —

CLINIC: Monday and Thursdays are the days that we’re here to do exams.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: What time on Monday?

CLINIC: Monday I’ve only got one left — 4:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And on Thursday I’m not quite sure what’s left on the schedule that day.

CALLER: Well, could I go ahead and be penciled in on like the Monday, 4:00 one?

CLINIC: You want to schedule the Monday? Okay. Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. We’re going to have to take down some information from you, and I’ve got a girl training that I want her to work on the computer.

CALLER: Well, can I ask you one quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yep, as long as you — we do the exam and everything, yeah. Yeah.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really worried of —

CLINIC: Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So can you hold on a second?

CALLER: Okay. Well, are you there?

CLINIC: (pause)

CLINIC: Hi. This is Barb. I’m the one that’s training.

CALLER: Okay. What was the name of the lady that I was just talking to?

CLINIC: That was Lisa.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And I’m Barb. And I’m going to need your name?

CALLER: Oh, well, it’s Christine.

CLINIC: Hmm?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: And your last name is?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: And your first name is Christine. With a C, Christine?

CALLER: A C-H.

CLINIC: C-H. And middle initial?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: What did you ask?

CLINIC: Middle initial.

CALLER: Oh. M.

CLINIC: And your address?

CALLER: What was that?

CLINIC: Your address?

CALLER: Oh, well, I wasn’t wanting to actually — could I give you my boyfriend’s address? It’s just, he’s moving to a new apartment, and I don’t know it yet, but we wanted to use that address.

CLINIC: Hold on just a minute. Christine?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: What’s your date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Did you ever call and make an appointment in Plattsburgh before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Because we’ve got you in the computer under Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Huh.

CLINIC: Yeah. Hang on a second. Let me just pull up and see what information they’ve got. Okay? Hang on. 3/19/88?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I have Redford, New York. Is that right?

CALLER: Well, I don’t think so. I mean, I’ve never been there.

CLINIC: You’ve never lived in Redford, New York?

CALLER: No. I’m in Tupper Lake. Well, when I went to get my Social Security card they said there were actually a lot of Christine Smiths. So I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your middle initial?

CALLER: M.

CLINIC: M?

CALLER: Yep.

CLINIC: Yeah. Same thing.

CALLER: I don’t know. That’s just weird. Where is that place that, that appointment?

CLINIC: Redford?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Plattsburgh office? Is that what you’re asking?

CALLER: Yeah. Where is that?

CLINIC: It’s on Brinkerhoff Street. It’s Planned Parenthood in Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Oh. Huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we’ll put you in under a new patient for us.

CALLER: Okay. My boyfriend was calling some places, but could he make an appointment for me?

CLINIC: I can’t tell if it was an appointment made in Plattsburgh, but do you think he called and made the appointment in Plattsburgh?

CALLER: I don’t know. I mean, he told me to do all the calling, but —

CLINIC: Who lives in Redford, New York?

CALLER: No one that I know.

CLINIC: He doesn’t?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: He doesn’t? You guys live in Tupper?

CALLER: I live in Tupper, Tupper Lake.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ll just add you in here. It’s no big deal. Let’s see here. Okay. I’m going to give you back to Barb and she’ll get the rest of the information from you. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Yeah, we have to have an address because, you can give us your home address. We won’t send anything to you.

CALLER: Oh, well, I just really didn’t want to do that.

CLINIC: We need to have it. So we need to have some address.

CALLER: Well, let me talk to my boyfriend and see. Is that all right if I call and talk to him and call you back?

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a minute. (pause)

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Where is your boyfriend moving to?

CALLER: He’s getting an apartment, so.

CLINIC: Where?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. He hasn’t decided between the two, but. I don’t know which one he’s going to pick.

CLINIC: But is he staying in Tupper?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you know what road?

CALLER: Right now?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What’s Tupper Lake’s zip code?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here.

CLINIC: Where’d you move from?

CALLER: From Texas.

CLINIC: Let’s see.

CALLER: I think my boyfriend actually might have a brother that lives in Plattsburgh.

CLINIC: In Plattsburgh?

CALLER: Yeah, maybe. I think that’s where he said he was.

CLINIC: Well, we’ll put Tupper Lake. When you come in we’ll need a street address.

CALLER: Okay. But would you guys mail anything to like my parents though?

CLINIC: No. If you don’t want us to mail anything, we’re not going to — we’re not going to contact your parents.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what would you need the address for then?

CLINIC: It’s the computer, for information.

CALLER: For what?

CLINIC: If we need to contact you. If there’s a problem we need to get ahold of you, how do we get ahold of you?

CALLER: Well, could I just — should I get like a cellphone then or something?

CLINIC: Well, if we send you mail, is it okay to send it in a blank envelope? Do your parents open your mail?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, I usually don’t get mail. They just open whatever comes.

CLINIC: Okay. So we won’t send mail. How about if we call you? Can we call and ask and say, can we talk to Christine? And if they say you’re not home, we’ll say okay, we’ll give her a call back later?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: We’re not going to say, this is Planned Parenthood calling.

CALLER: I don’t know. I just don’t know that that would be such a good idea. I’m just worried that — I just don’t want to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. So we’ll put down that we won’t contact your house at all. But then we need some place, someone to contact to let you know that we’re trying to get ahold of you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I give you all my boyfriend’s information, and then he could contact me through that?

CLINIC: That’s — yes. We can do that. If you have your boyfriend’s information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m supposed to see him at lunch today. Could I just call you after that?

CLINIC: Well, yeah. Why don’t we do that? Get all his info — you know, his address and phone number, and then give us a call back, and that’s what we’ll put into the computer, and we won’t put any of your home stuff in there.

CALLER: Okay. Would there be anything else you would need besides all that?

CLINIC: I just need your Social Security number and like your date of birth and just some other information.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just statistic reasons that you’ll know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So just get that stuff, Christine, and give us a call back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. This is Judy speaking. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: In Ithaca they do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: What’s Ithaca’s telephone number? It’s 273-1513.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just really worried because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion but —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever that is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You wouldn’t have to tell anybody because it’s confidentiality if you go to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I — like I’m just really scared because I haven’t had my period since like December 14, and I don’t know what to do. So could I come in there for like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Oh, absolutely. We could do that. Have you ever been to Planned Parenthood before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: All right. Let me get you into the computer. Hold on just a second, hon. (pause) What’s your last name?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: (typing) First name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: With a K or a C?

CALLER: C-H.

CLINIC: Phone number where we could reach you?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend wanted to use his cell phone number, but he just got it, and I don’t know what it is. Is it all right to call you back with that later?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. Sure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Your birthday?

CALLER: My birthday is March 19, 1988. Do you know if it’s all right if I use his address?

CLINIC: Oh, yes, as long as — you know it’s somewheres where we could get ahold of you, or whatever.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So let me see when we can get you in.

CALLER: Do you know like if the pregnancy test came out that I wasn’t pregnant that if you guys could do birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Well, we would have to set you up for an appointment so you could come in for an exam.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You have to have an exam first in order to get on birth control.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay? Can you come in Thursday, hon?

CALLER: I think so. I’d have to call my boyfriend to see. He’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to set up an appointment? Now do you go to school during the day?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: You’re homeschooled. So do you want to set up the appointment, or you just want to get back to us on that?

CALLER: I guess I’ll just call you back after I talk to him.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Could I ask you real quick, like if I was on birth control would you guys have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about it, and we didn’t want anybody to really know about all this, so.

CLINIC: No, it’s very confidential here, hon. Whatever you do, you’re the patient, and we abide by what you want as far as contact and everything. Okay?

CALLER: Okay, so would it be all right if — like I would really prefer if he was there with me. Would that be okay with everything?

CLINIC: He could come and sit with you and stuff, but as far as when you come in for your exam if you come for birth control you know, providing this test is negative, there’s a lot of the time that we would just prefer to talk to you because there’s a lot of questions we would want to ask you and it’s a little easier one on one.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But it’s okay if he’s there?

CLINIC: Yeah, as long as he’s here. Yeah, in the waiting room he can wait for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, let me call him and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Mine’s Judy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Good morning. Rise (sp) Office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: That would be the clinic. They don’t open until 12:30 on Monday. Would you like that number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: 794-3704.

CALLER: Okay, thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

(phone clicks)

(dial sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Rise Office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I just called. I was actually wondering if I could ask somebody some questions.

CLINIC: They’re clinical questions?

CALLER: Just — well, I don’t know. I’m just scared, and I don’t know what to do, and I just wanted to ask somebody some questions.

CLINIC: Okay, I’ll try. I’m not sure that I can help you. There is no medical personnel up here. We’re the education department.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’m just really scared because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m just scared that I’m pregnant and I don’t know what to do. And my friend told me that since like I”m going to be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents. But I can’t tell my parents but my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just like sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You don’t have to tell your parents. You don’t need their permission.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No. When you come in to make an appointment with the clinic or whatever, we have a booklet on the rights of minors in the state of New York. They have the right to make their own healthcare choices.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you do not have to tell them, and the medical personnel in the clinic is bound by confidentiality to not report it either. You could arrange with them on how to communicate whether by phone or by mail or whatever, so that it’s kept confidential. But they’ll discuss all that with you. There’s, on Thursday — I don’t know if you want to wait that long– but on Thursday afternoon the clinic has a walk-in for teens.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But you could call them and say you might want to get in before that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about anything, like —

CLINIC: And they won’t. They don’t need to. Nobody from this end will tell anyone.

CALLER: Okay. So they wouldn’t have to ask questions about him or anything either?

CLINIC: About your boyfriend?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: I can’t answer that 100 percent. I imagine you need him making those decisions; if he wants to be involved he can.

CALLER: Yeah. I would just feel better if he was there with me.

CLINIC: Certainly. I don’t think there’s any questions he needs to ask, but he can certainly accompany you and sit with you in the waiting room. They don’t do that procedure here. But they will have you come in and do your health workup and whatever, and then they’ll give you the paperwork and you’ll have to go to one of our other clinics to have the procedure.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like say that maybe I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Yep. Yep.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope. You have those rights to make all those decisions. Yep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, —

CLINIC: It’s in writing, so if anybody was to question you about that, the New York Civil Liberties Union publishes a booklet for minors and it explains all that stuff, that they do not have to get anyone’s permission.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: The only problem you might have is if you’re trying to use your health insurance.

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. So that might go back to the person who holds the policy which is probably your parents, and in that case it would be hard to keep it confidential. But if you’re going to pay by cash or money order or check or some other means — and they do sliding scale here. So if you’re a minor and you have no income or whatever, tell them all that stuff. And they’ll work with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But, yeah, confidentiality part is not an issue. No one at this end is ever going to disclose it to anyone. They are bound by New York state law to not. So, just so you know, feel comfortable with that.

CALLER: Well, thanks.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: I’m just really worried about everything.

CLINIC: Yeah, I’ll bet you are. Yeah. But don’t worry. They’ll take care of you, and, you know, they had people in your age bracket many times. So they’re used to it. They’re a nice bunch of girls down there. They’re all women.

CALLER: Oh, okay. You’ve been a lot of help. Thanks. What was your name?

CLINIC: Maggie. Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’m upstairs. We’re upstairs. We’re the Rape Crisis Center and the Health Education Department. The clinic is on the first floor. We’re at 14 Prince Street. I don’t know if you know where the old building was. We’re one building down. They moved one building over.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But call them at 12:30. That’s when they open, and they’re open until 7:00 tonight I think.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay. Good luck. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this location. No. We do pregnancy tests. We do the surgical workups. We do everything but the procedure. That is done in Schenectady.

CALLER: In Schenectady?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Do you have that number?

CLINIC: I do. It’s 374-5353.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like I’m just scared because like my friend told me that like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that they would have to tell my parents, but my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: He’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: No. First of all, they’re wrong. There is a complete confidentiality. Nobody has to know. And if I were you, I wouldn’t tell anybody that you’re 14 and your boyfriend’s 22.

CALLER: How come?

CLINIC: Because he could be subject to criminal charges.

CALLER: What do you mean criminal? What would happen?

CLINIC: You’re underage. You’re a minor. And he’s not. He’s — that’s called — it’s called statutory rape.

CALLER: What do you mean? He’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love.

CLINIC: No, no. I am saying if somebody like in somebody, an older person, for instance your parents — if your parents were to ever find out, regardless of how consensual it is, they could have him arrested.

CALLER: He could go to jail?

CLINIC: Yeah. He is 8 years older than you. He is an adult. He is over the age of — he’s an adult and you are a minor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Anyone under 17 is a minor.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And also, you know, so have you missed a period?

CALLER: Yeah. I haven’t had one since like the third week in december, and that’s why I’m scared.

CLINIC: You need to make a phone call and make a decision quickly because there is a 16-week cutoff. After 16 weeks Planned Parenthood will not do the procedure.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And you’re there, because if you haven’t had a period since the third week in December then, you know, you’re there. You’re getting very, very close. And the procedures are booked three weeks in advance.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You could come in here for a pregnancy test, yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have any kind of health insurance?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he was going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay, well, he needs to bring about $45. If he’s coming with you for the test —

CALLER: Is that all right?

CLINIC: He needs — yeah. He can. He needs to bring about $45 with him to pay for the test.

CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about this and like you said we didn’t want anyone to know about us. Would they be asking a lot of questions?

CLINIC: Well, that’s why he doesn’t want anyone to know about you because he knows that —

CALLER: He said it was just because he didn’t want me to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Well, yeah. (laughs) Of course he said that. He can come with you. We certainly are not going to file. You know, this is something that only like a family member or any other adult that decides to do that — an auntie, a friend of the family, anybody — just so you know — that’s because of his age and your age. You guys are, you know, just so you know, okay? Don’t go blabbing to all your friends. So, yes, come in here today. Come in here.

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call and see if he can get the time off work, but if it turned out that I wasn’t’ pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. But how often have you not had a period for three or four months at a time?

CALLER: Well, not often. I mean, never.

CLINIC: Never, so what are the chances that you’re not pregnant?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: They’re pretty low.

CALLER: But if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control though?

CLINIC: Yeah. Have you ever had a manual exam?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Ever been to a gynecologist?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: All right. So call him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Find out when he can bring you in and we’ll try to get an appointment made for a pregnancy test because you really have no time to waste. You really don’t. If this is what you think you’re going to do, then you have to get on the stick immediately; otherwise, you’re going to end up having to go to Long Island for the procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because 16 weeks is our cutoff, hon. All right? So call him, find out when he can get you in today, tomorrow sometime. Thursday we’re open until 7:00. But what I’d really need to do is have you come in on Thursday. Let me give you a time. All right? And you tell him and you know, don’t ask him, tell him that he needs to bring you here on Thursday at 1:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that we can get this thing going.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: You’ve been a lot of help. Thank you.

CLINIC: I hope so.

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Anna.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay? All right. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. What we can do for you here is, we can do pregnancy tests to confirm that you are pregnant if you just did one at home or something. We can do that. The counselor would talk to you about your options. Options sometimes depend on how far along you are, where you travel to, what kind of anesthesia you need, things like that. There’s a lot of things to talk about. We can do the examination that you would need before the termination, and we can also do the examination afterward. We just don’t do the actual abortion here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, where would I go for an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, because of the things like I talked about — you know, depending on far along, what kind of anesthesia, things like that, the counselor would talk to you about all of that. It really depends on a lot of different things. Our Schenectady center is one of the places that we refer to. But we also — there’s also other places that we refer to too.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, so I could come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay, it’s just —

CLINIC: That’s really the first step. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to — like I’m just scared because like I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: But my friend said that since like, since I’m so young that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of all that and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Um. You can come here without your parents knowing anyway. So it doesn’t matter with the boyfriend. But — so you could still come here anyway.

CALLER: Well, do you know if I could get an abortion without my parents knowing?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes, um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t know what they would do if they — they just — I mean, my boyfriend’s a real good guy, but my parents just don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. But I don’t know, I don’t understand that. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. But I don’t know. And they just can’t find out because I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But — so you’re sure that they wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Right. What we could do — I mean, the next opening I have for a pregnancy test, we could have you come in tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see when he can take me.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to do that then? Because we do set up appointments. Do you want to do that then, give him a call?

CALLER: Yeah. But do you know like how much it costs to get an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, there’s so many things. There’s a lot of things for her to talk to you about. She would go over all of that with you. The pregnancy test — all we would be doing tomorrow if you want to take the 9:00 appointment would be a pregnancy test. And that’s not very expensive. So if, you know, there’s other things for her to talk to you about. You might qualify for Medicaid if you don’t want your parents to know. There’s other things to talk about too. So.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there? It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Right. We do, but you wouldn’t be down for an appointment for that. If we had time, we could — see, we have separate appointments. The pregnancy test counselor, the pregnancy counselor has her own schedule and also the clinic has their schedule. If we have time then we could set you up with birth control with the clinic, but i don’t know that they would have time tomorrow morning. It looks pretty busy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know, they wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Oh, no. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend says that it’s important that nobody finds out about us. So. I can’t let anyone know that, that we’re — I can’t let anyone know what’s going on. So. I just — he just doesn’t want me to get in trouble or anything. So. I’m just really worried about everything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But — so let me call him and see when is a good time for him to take me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Teresa.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Okay? Okay, you’re welcome. Bye bye.
