CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah? How much does it cost?

CLINIC: If you’re going to pay out of pocket, between 300 and $400.

CALLER: What’s the difference for?

CLINIC: It depends. You come in for a pregnancy test, and then you have to have a pre-op exam done. It depends on what kind of testing you want to have done. There’s contributing factors. If you want to be seen here, or if you want to go to our Schenectady office and some IV sedation. We also help people apply for Medicaid here; that can cover it.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend, he can cover it. He’s 22. He can take care of it. Is there any age requirement for having an abortion?

CLINIC: No, not at all. No parental consent.

CALLER: You don’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: The problem is, my parents can’t find out at all. My boyfriend’s 22. And we’re going to get married, but they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh. Okay. You can come in. There’s confidential services here. You don’t need parental consent to have the surgical abortion done. What we usually need to start out with, though, is have you come in and have a pregnancy test, so that we have the documentation on file. And you will meet with a pregnancy counselor. And they just discuss your different options with you, and they’ll talk to you about the process, and the procedure and everything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to go ahead and do that?

CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant, can I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yes, you certainly can.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Well, let me call my boyfriend and see if he has any questions real quick. Is it all right if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Yeah. You can call back as soon as you’re done with him, okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Nicole.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anyone that does?

CLINIC: They do it in the Glen Falls office. Have you been to this clinic before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy test over the weekend, and it came out positive.

CLINIC: Okay. And you haven’t been here before?

CALLER: No. It’s just my friend told me to talk to you guys.

CLINIC: Okay. The first place I would start would be coming in and talking to Beth. She’s the pregnancy counselor. And if you’re thinking about terminating, you’d have to have like a pre-surgery exam.

CALLER: Do you have to be a certain age to have an abortion, because I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, you don’t.

When did you want to come in?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see when he can get off because he’s going to drive me here. But you guys don’t have to tell my parents or anything, right?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: The problem is, I can’t tell my parents, because my boyfriend is 22. And we’re going to get married, but my parents don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. But there’s just no way that they can find out.

CLINIC: Now, do you have insurance or not?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend’s going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Are you a New York State resident or Vermont?

CALLER: I live in Hartford.

CLINIC: Okay. Just get back to me when you decide what you want to do.

CALLER: Well, if I end up not being pregnant, could you guys get birth control for me?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if I call you back and talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Just in case my boyfriend has a question or something.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I talk to you?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Barb.

CALLER: Barb?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay.
