TAPE – 063

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood. This is Karen.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t do them here. We would — if that’s what you’re seeking, we would do an exam, we would tell you how far along the pregnancy, and then we would give you a referral.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask a few questions?

CLINIC: Sure. Well, my main question is my parents — like, my friend told me that my parents have to know about the abortion before I can have one. Is that true?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: So you’re 13 now?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. And how did you become pregnant? A boyfriend or —

CALLER: Uh-huh, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. We can see you hear without parental permission. But —

CALLER: It’s just not way they can find out. Because they don’t like him because they think he’s too old.

CLINIC: How old is he?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. You may have a problem finding a facility that would be willing to do it because of your age.

CALLER: Why? Just because —

CLINIC: Because you are so young.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: When was your last missed period?

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: — the last one was like — I’m not really sure how long ago it was. It was like — it was before Christmas. I think it was like probably the first week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. So the pregnancy is pretty new.

CALLER: Yeah, I guess.

CLINIC: Well, do you want to start by — I mean, we’re not going to ask for parental permission. Since you’re only 13, I would prefer if a parent or guardian came with you. Do you have an older sister or an aunt or anyone you can share this information with?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You have nobody.

CALLER: Um-um.

CLINIC: Okay. So how are you going to get here? Your boyfriend?

CALLER: Uh-huh, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in and have an exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you done a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I did one over the weekend. It said it was positive.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you can come in, and we can do the exam. And we can try and help you find someplace if that’s what you want to do.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I can’t promise you that. We would try and help you find someplace that would keep it confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Because they just can’t find out.

CLINIC: Yeah, I hear you. I hear you. What do you think would happen?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I don’t want to think about that. But my parents would be furious.

CLINIC: When are you available to come in?

CALLER: I don’t know. I’d have to talk to my boyfriend to see, but maybe Friday.

CLINIC: Okay. I have some appointments open Friday afternoon if you can come then.

CALLER: Okay. I have to call him and see.

CLINIC: You want to call him and call us back?

CALLER: Well, I guess. If, like — well, my other question is like, do you know if I could get birth control there or anything?

CLINIC: Umm-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: We can do birth control. Yeah. You have to deal with this pregnancy first, and then we can put you on birth control.

CALLER: Do you have to tell anybody about the birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Okay. Let me talk to my boyfriend. Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Sure. We’ll be here until 5:00. And then if you miss us, the office opens at 9:00 tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right to talk to you?

CLINIC: Yeah. You can talk to any of the nurses that answer the phone. I’m not usually here.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? But the supervisor’s name is Jean. You could talk to her. There are a couple of other nurses there. Okay?

CALLER: Is there any way I could talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Karen.

CALLER: Karen?

CLINIC: Yeah. I won’t be in this office tomorrow though. If you call back before 5:00, I’ll still be here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But if you call tomorrow, I won’t be here. Then I would say ask for Jean —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — because I can tell her what we discussed.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And she wouldn’t tell anybody either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right then.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: We’ll talk to you later.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Parenthood. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: You have to come for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: Hold on, please.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hi. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was just wondering about abortions.

CLINIC: Okay. We do abortions here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost, I guess?

CLINIC: If you’re under 12 weeks, it’s $350.

CALLER: Okay. How do you know —

CLINIC: How do you go about doing it?

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: The first day of your last period. When was your last period?

CALLER: Well, I guess — it was probably around like maybe the first week in December.

CLINIC: What town do you live in?

CALLER: I live in Whiting (sp).

CLINIC: Wooding (ph)?

CALLER: Whiting, yeah.

CLINIC: Where’s that?

CALLER: Well it’s in — it’s in the middle.

CLINIC: Are you in New Jersey?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What town is it?

CALLER: Whiting.

CLINIC: Whiting. Oh, down by Fort Dix?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Oh. Oh, okay. So you’re about an hour-and-a-half from us. Do you want to go to Planned Parenthood in South Jersey?

CALLER: No, I really want to go just someplace where no one will see me.

CLINIC: Okay. So you need to come up here and speak to a counselor. You need to come in two visits.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So when do you want to come?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know. I have to talk to my boyfriend to see. But — it’s just —

CLINIC: Okay. You don’t have a lot of time to play with. You should come up as soon as possible. So call your boyfriend and see when he can bring you up here.

CALLER: It’s just — the problem is I can’t tell my parents at all, because —

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: — he’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married. But my parents absolutely hate him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But there’s just no way that they can find out that we’re having sex.

CLINIC: Okay. So how old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. So you need to talk to your boyfriend about bringing you up here, okay?

CALLER: Okay. And no one would tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: You need to give us a call back; get your boyfriend to bring you up here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Why don’t you get a hold of him and give us a call back.

CALLER: Well, I won’t be able to talk to him until like after 5:00 when he gets off. But there would be no way that anybody would know at all?

CLINIC: You should give us a call tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Well, I just don’t want anyone to find out.

CLINIC: No. You can have an abortion in New Jersey up to 12 — you can have an abortion without parental consent or knowledge.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: If I ended up not being pregnant, would there be any way you guys could give us birth control?

CLINIC: Well, I would probably send you to another center because you’re so far from us.

CALLER: Yeah. But would I like be able to get birth control there?

CLINIC: You could.

CALLER: And no one would find out about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, can I talk to you next time I call?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Lauren.

CALLER: Lauren?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Oh, you’re welcome.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Barbara speaking.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: No? Do you know who I would talk — like call or —

CLINIC: You would have to become a patient here and see the doctor. Then you’d have to make your decision based on all the options.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You do options counseling. And if that’s what you decide to do, then you’re given names of different places, and you get to choose which one.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if they would have to tell my parents before can have an abortion?

CLINIC: No, never. No.

CALLER: Never?

CLINIC: Never, no. There’s a law. No.

CALLER: Because there’s just no way they can find out.

CLINIC: That’s right. Only through you.

CALLER: Okay. They would be furious if they found out that me and my boyfriend were having sex. They think he’s too old for me. Is there any age requirement or anything to have an abortion?

CLINIC: What is it?

CALLER: Is there any age requirement to have an abortion?

CLINIC: Oh. No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. It’s legal in this state.

CALLER: Okay. So I’m going to be 14 in March. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Yeah. You have a choice.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — what if I wasn’t pregnant or anything?

CLINIC: What if you weren’t?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So then you should get on birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You would still need to see a doctor here and get a full exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You can come in and take a pregnancy test anytime.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can do that without an appointment.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But if you want to go further than that, then you have to see the doctor.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, is it all right if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: That’s your choice.

CALLER: Does it cost anything for the —

CLINIC: Hmm?

CALLER: Does it cost anything for the exam or anything?

CLINIC: Yes, it does. But everything’s done on a sliding scale here. And if you’re a student, there’s a special rate. But, yes, there is a charge.

CALLER: What if like — my boyfriend’s the one that’s going to be paying for it, and he’s an honor student. Like, he’s already graduated.

CLINIC: Well, that — no, he’d be paying for you though.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Everything’s based on you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if you had a full exam or everything, it would probably be about $60. But if you just come in for the pregnancy test, about $8 or $10.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my other question is, my friend told me that you guys have to know all about my boyfriend before I can get anything done.

CLINIC: There’s nothing we have to know to about him.

CALLER: She said that you guys have to know that he’s like 22 and stuff.

CLINIC: That’s none of our concern.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Really.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. This whole thing is based on you, and you alone– your history, your life, your decision.

CALLER: All right. So no one has to be told anything?

CLINIC: No. What he finds out is from you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, we won’t discuss it with him.

CALLER: You won’t tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Um-um.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if like after the pregnancy test there, if I’m not pregnant, and I can have birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, sure. We’ll discuss that with you. You’ll get counseling here from the nurses.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back after I talk to him?

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: To see if he has any questions or anything.

CLINIC: If you can, come in tomorrow, and we’ll do a pregnancy test. And we’ll counsel you then too.

CALLER: Okay. Could I call you back today or anything?

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Well, I’m Barbara. And I’m going to be busy probably with the doctor. We have a clinic.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: So one of the nurses, somebody will pick up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I actually have a couple of questions. Like, do you know if my parents have to find out before I can have an abortion?

CLINIC: Not at this time.

CALLER: Not at this time?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Well, the problem is that my parents can’t find out at all. Because like, well, my boyfriend’s 22, and they just absolutely hate him because they think he’s too old for me. But there’s just no way that they can find out we’re having sex at all.

CLINIC: Okay. Just so long as you don’t use insurance then usually there’s not a way for people to find out.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he’s going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to make an appointment for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: Okay. Are you coming here for first time?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Can I have your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith.

CLINIC: Smith?

CALLER: Yep.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Is Christine.

CLINIC: Can I have your zip code?

CALLER: Um —

CLINIC: Your date of birth is when?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: 9/15/80? No?

CALLER: What? It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Zip code, please?

CALLER: Well, I don’t — do you really need that?

CLINIC: This information is highly confidential, but we’re going to need some — we’re going to need your phone number, we’re going to need the name of your guardian.

CALLER: Oh, whoa.

CLINIC: I don’t have to take this information right now, but when you come in, we’re going to need some information from you. Are you a student?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Can I have your phone number?

CALLER: Well, I’m at my friend’s house. I don’t —

CLINIC: We need your phone number. We would never call and say that we’re from here, but we need your — we need a number.

CALLER: Why do you need it?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: Why do you need the phone number?

CLINIC: Suppose we need to cancel the appointment for whatever reason? We’re not going to call and say that we’re from Planned Parenthood. We’re not going to call and say we’re from Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Like, there’s no way — my mom always answer the phone.

CLINIC: We have a name that we call, and we say — I cannot give you all the information over the phone. But when we need to call the patient, we have something that we say, and they’ll know who it is. We will explain to you this when you come in.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys won’t tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Say like I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: It’s totally confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I call you back after I talk to my boyfriend?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, can I talk to you when I call back?

CLINIC: Okay. You can call back if you want. I know you can call me with a number that I can reach you if I need to.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: What’s your name?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, it’s 732-842-9300.

CALLER: 9300?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask you a couple questions?

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: Well, like my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: That’s false.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We don’t tell your parents anything.

CALLER: Okay. Because if they found out —

CLINIC: Everything is confidential.

CALLER: Yeah. If they found out I would be in big trouble. They can’t stand my boyfriend.

CLINIC: To us it’s like none of their business, you know what I mean? (laughs)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That’s why you come to us. You know what I mean?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because minors have rights here. And we don’t inform your parents of anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, hon?

CALLER: Well, yeah. All right.

CLINIC: You can call them and — well, where do you live?

CALLER: Well, I live in Middletown.

CLINIC: Okay. Maybe, Spotswood is probably closer for you. Maybe you need to go in for a pregnancy test because you know you’re pregnant already?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy test over the weekend, and —

CLINIC: It came out positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. The only way we can like give you a referral to go somewhere, you have to come into our clinic and get a pregnancy test. We have to confirm it and then we counsel you and give you a referral.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can call Spotswood. Spotswood is close to you, right?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: Yeah, because you live in Middletown, yeah. I think it’s closer to you. You know where Perth Amboy is?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: We’re in Perth Amboy. You know where we are?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, my boyfriend knows.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you just want to make an appointment for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. They don’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: They don’t have to tell anybody, right?

CLINIC: No. We won’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: This is your business.

CALLER: Even like is there an age requirement or anything?

CLINIC: There’s no age requirement.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if like — like I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: It don’t matter.

CALLER: It doesn’t matter?

CLINIC: No, hon.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: My friend also told me that you guys have to know that, how old my boyfriend is.

CLINIC: We don’t have to know any information about your boyfriend. Whoever’s giving you this information is misinforming you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you did the right thing by calling here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We give you the accurate information. Don’t listen to your friends because they’re giving you misinformation, okay?

CALLER: Well, she said that —

CLINIC: We don’t have to know anything about your boyfriend.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You need to come in as a patient. Come in for a pregnancy test. We’ll — if you are pregnant we’ll confirm it, and then the nurse will counsel you and refer you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, hon?

CALLER: Well, like — all right.

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: If like he — he said that we should look into birth control. Like —

CLINIC: Yes, maybe you should.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s definitely a good idea for you. If you’re sexually active you should be on some type of birth control. We supply that here too. So if you come in for pregnancy tests and you’re confirmed and — do you know what you would want to do? You want to avoid it?

CALLER: Well, I — yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So after you do that you will come back in two weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know what I mean? Then you will get a whole GYN exam — pap smear and everything, and then we supply you three months worth of birth control pills. Because you’re a patient here we supply you with that. We put you on a student scale fee which is not that much, and then you just keep coming and receive your pills.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if my boyfriend’s not — like he’s paying for it, and he’s 22. He’s not a student anymore.

CLINIC: That’s fine. We still put you on a sliding scale fee. You know what I mean? So you just give us his info — we give you the paperwork. You put his income down. That’s it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But if it’s easier for you to just keep it as a student fee, and that way he won’t be paying that much.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So even if he’s not a student you just say he is, or what?

CLINIC: No. You don’t say anything about him. Information, everything on the paper you put about yourself. But in the income bracket you just put his income.

CALLER: And you guys don’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: We don’t tell nobody nothing. Only thing that’s on your paper, we need a guardian.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’ll need — not him. Not your boyfriend. Your mother. The only way we will call your mother is if you got hit by a car outside or something, you know what I mean? But she don’t have to know you was here. You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We aren’t going to write letters to your house. We won’t call your house, nothing like that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if you couldn’t pay your whole balance we wouldn’t even bill you. We’d just run a balance so that the next time you come in to receive more pills, you pay on your balance from before and your current visit. That’s how we do it. You pay as you come or you pay as you can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So did you want to set up an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see when he can get off. Is there any way I can call you back?

CLINIC: Okay, because we — actually can’t even put you in until the 22nd. So the longer you wait the longer the appointment is going to be.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So. We, actually tonight we close at 5:30, so that’s, if you can try to call before 5:30 so I can put you in for the 22nd.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name so I can —

CLINIC: My name is Wanda.

CALLER: Wanda?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, hon?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: All right.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: You’d have to come in for a pregnancy test and speak with a counselor.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I ask a couple of questions first?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, due to security reasons, I won’t be able to answer anything about that.

CALLER: It’s just that I need to know before I do anything.

CLINIC: No. You need to come in for the test. And then when you come in for the test, they’ll be able to discuss everything with you then.

CALLER: It’s just — I can’t — the problem is, I can’t tell my parents at all. My boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married, but my parents can’t stand him because they think he’s too old for me. And if they found out that we were having sex, we would get in big trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s no problem. We’re confidential. They don’t have to know.

CALLER: You wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there like an age limit for an abortion of anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So it’s all right if I’m like — I’m going to be 14 in March, so that’s still okay?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, would you guys be able to do birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Well, it’s Smith.

CLINIC: Smith?

CALLER: Uh-huh. And my first name is Christine.

CLINIC: With a “C”?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: What is your birthday?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Phone number, cell phone, beeper?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know —

CLINIC: Not on this site. We just give you a referral somewhere to another Planned Parenthood, or we can give you a referral somewhere else– whatever suits you best. There’s like a whole explaining process on how each clinic works, and how they work, and how the anesthetic is done. So whatever you think is best for yourself.

So you would have to come in. Schedule an appointment first, come in, get a pregnancy test done. If it comes back positive, then we’ll give you a referral somewhere else. And we’ll counsel you on what you’re going to do and what you should do.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask a few questions?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: Can I ask you a question or two?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can ask me questions.

CALLER: Well, my main question is, like, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No. That’s not true.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Everything that’s said and done here is confidential, and you do not need your parents’ consent to get an abortion.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just that my parents can’t find out at all because my boyfriend’s 22. And we want to get married, but they hate him because he’s just so old. Well, they just think he’s old.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: Like, I don’t understand why they — but I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. You think what’s best for you. Whatever you want to do. You can either call and make an appointment with us, and we’ll schedule you to get a pregnancy test done here.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody would have to know?

CLINIC: Nobody knows, honey. Nobody has to know.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And will you go to get the abortion done, you can go with a friend, or even with him you can go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. You have rights here, like everybody else. Everything that’s done here, we don’t need your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Okay. Like if it ends up that I’m not pregnant or whatever —

CLINIC: You can get on birth control.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: No one would have to know about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to set an appointment?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call my boyfriend, and then call you back?

CLINIC: Okay. Call your boyfriend, discuss it with him, and then call me back.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Ask for Demaris (sp).

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Ask for Demaris.

CALLER: Demaris?

CLINIC: Yes, Demaris.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, sweetie?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah, I just called. I was wondering, do you guys — I got disconnected. But do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t do abortions here.

CALLER: No? Okay. Do you know of any place I could go?

CLINIC: Call Newark Mini Surgery site. Call information and get their number. They can give you more information on that.

CALLER: Okay. So you don’t have the number or anything?

CLINIC: No, I don’t have it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Can I ask you a question?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, my friend told me you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion.

CALLER: Yeah. Do I?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’re going to be 14. I don’t know. Call Newark Mini Surgery, because I don’t know. Maybe you need an adult supervision. It don’t necessarily have to be your parent.

CALLER: Oh, it’s just —

CLINIC: But just call them just to make sure because I’m not sure on that. Okay?

CALLER: My parents can’t know at all.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: My boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married, but —

CLINIC: Who? Your boyfriend?k

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Well, just ask him to go in with you.

CALLER: I mean, they just absolutely hate him. They think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: No. Just ask him to go in with you; that way your parents don’t have to know. But you probably have to pay if you’re not on Medicaid.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he would pay. He would take care of everything.

CLINIC: Yeah. Just ask him to go in with you.

CALLER: And nobody would have to find out?

CLINIC: No, just them know. Nobody will find out.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just call information and get the number to Newark Mini Surgery site, in Newark on Roosevelt Avenue.

CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant — of it turns out that I’m not pregnant, is there any way that I could get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yeah, sure. Do you want to come in here for a PT first then go for your abortion, or —

CALLER: I guess.

CLINIC: Do you know that you’re pregnant right now?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy test over the weekend, and it came out positive. But —

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: — I’m not sure if it’s right or whatever.

CLINIC: It’s up to you if you want to come here and to the PT, take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s up to you.

CALLER: I’d have to talk to my boyfriend. But can I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Tamica (sp).

CALLER: Tamica?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. You have to have had a positive pregnancy test. You have to be between 7 and 12 weeks pregnant. It’s anywhere from 350 to $450. And we only put people under our local anesthesia, which means that you are awake during the procedure. There’s two appointments. First is your health history appointment over the phone, and that person will schedule you for the appointment for the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if they have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? It’s just I can’t tell my parents because my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married, but my parents don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Fine. Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: You don’t think he’s too old for me or anything?

CLINIC: That’s not my place to say anything.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: But as far as patients having abortions here, we’re not permitted to give out any information to anybody.

CALLER: Do know if there’s like an age limit for having an abortion?

CLINIC: No. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: All right. Well, you’re too young for here. Because as far as we consider, patients that are 14 or younger, we send them to a place to be put to sleep because it’s a local anesthesia. And we don’t think that’s a good idea for patients that young.

CALLER: Other people won’t tell?

CLINIC: No one should tell. I can give you a phone number for Princeton Women’s Center. That’s on Route 1 in Princeton. And they put patients to sleep. Do you want that phone number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on, please.

(Pause)

CLINIC: That phone number is 609-514-9191.

CALLER: All right. If it turns out that I’m not pregnant, is it okay if I come to you guys for birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Yeah? And you still wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No. We’re not permitted to.

CALLER: Is it cool if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: If you want to talk to someone about — what do you want to talk to us about, your different options and things like that?

CALLER: Well, if my boyfriend has questions, is it okay if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Well, we have a community services department. And we have counselors there, and they can talk to you.

CALLER: But I like you. You’re nice.

CLINIC: They’re much nicer than me.

CALLER: But you’re nice.

CLINIC: I know. But that’s what they’re here for. Okay? They’re here to talk to you about sexuality and preventive measures.

CALLER: But I really don’t want to talk to a whole bunch of people.

CLINIC: They’ll just give you one person to talk to. They’re educators, and that’s why they’re here. So if you wanted to talk to someone, you should — if you want to call back, you should call community services. Call the same number you called and ask for community services. And I think you should ask for Violet Sawyer.

CALLER: Violet?

CLINIC: Yes. She runs that department. And she’d be able to give you either someone in that department or she would talk to you.

CALLER: Okay. Could you switch me to her right now?

CLINIC: I’ll see if she’s available. I’m not sure she’s in today. Hold on, please. Let me check.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay, I’m sorry. I didn’t get your name.

CALLER: I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Christine, I’m going to give you to Michele. And she’s in community services. And I gave her a little bit of information that you gave me, and she’ll be able to talk to you. So hang on.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hi, Christine.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: My name is Michele Giagano (ph) and I’m one of the pregnancy option counselors here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You were speaking to a woman named Sharon. She gave me a little bit of background information, that you were currently pregnant, and you were having difficulties coming to a choice.

CALLER: Yeah. Me and my boyfriend talked about it, and we’re wanting to get an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. So you had made your choice.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So what was the reasoning behind the call?

CALLER: My friend told me that you guys have to tell about me and my boyfriend, and my parents have to find out and everything. And they can’t find out.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. We don’t notify the parents.

CALLER: She said that you guys would have to find out that he’s 22 —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — and they would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No. That’s not true.

CALLER: Okay. They wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. As long as you had the financial ability to provide yourself —

CALLER: Yeah, he said he would pay cash for it.

CLINIC: They’re not going to notify your parents. That’s a Planned Parenthood thing. We don’t need parental consent, and we don’t notify anybody. We just communicate with the person who’s getting the services.

So if you wanted to call and schedule that, you can call on Friday between 9 and 12.

CALLER: Is it cool if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, it’s not me. The person that you’d be calling to schedule the termination, her name is Julie. So you can call then and tell her that you want to schedule the termination of the pregnancy. And then she’ll ask you some questions, a little bit of a pre-screening they do. It’s just kind of to know about you and whether or not you would be a fit for here. And if not, they will refer you somewhere else.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You have our number, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, great. Thanks.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.
