TAPE – 834

(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Pinefield Health Care Center. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are.

CALLER: How do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Well, do you know when your last period was?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: And was it a normal period for you?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: We have a little wheel that they use in the gynecologist office and everything. It kind of helps determine that. If I put it as your last period on the 15th of January, that puts you approximately — let’s see, today’s the 12th — right at the beginning of nine weeks from your last period. Anything under 12 weeks, it’s 575.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: What that includes is your lab work and ultra sound, medication before the procedure, the actual procedure, your follow-up exam, two months of birth control. What is not included is if you’re a negative blood type. Do you know what blood type you are?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: If you’re a negative blood type, it would be $60 more for the Rhogam shot that you have to have. And the only other fee would be your medications afterwards, which should just be one, which would be your antibiotic, which generally runs about $9 if you don’t have insurance.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m kind of worried. My boyfriend said that he would pay cash for everything. I’m worried because I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. Buy my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything. Would that be all right, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We still have to have one parent to consent. They have to be here to sign the paperwork and everything. Do they know about your boyfriend?

CALLER: Yeah, they know we’re going out, but they have no idea we’re having sex. I can’t tell them that at all. I mean, they’d be furious if they found out about that.

CLINIC: Well, probably to start off, they would be. But eventually they’re going to have to realize that you were responsible enough to let them know.

CALLER: But I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: You’re going to have to. The thing is, is that I know that’s going to be extremely difficult. But sooner or later they’re going to find out anyway.

CALLER: How?

CLINIC: Because you’re going to get further and further along.

CALLER: Well, is there anyplace else I could go and they wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anybody?

CLINIC: Not to my knowledge.

CALLER: So there’s nothing I can do then?

CLINIC: Not that I know of. I’m trying to think.

Are you absolutely positive that was a normal period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Because sometimes you can have normal periods and still be pregnant. That’s really the only thing that bothers me, is you might be further along than we think, which gives you less time to find somewhere else to go, or to come here, tell your parents, whatever.

CALLER: Well, would I be able to come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Do you guys live in town, in Springfield?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That might be the easiest thing. Because we don’t have to have parental consent to do an ultra sound or pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So we can at least do that. In the meantime, I can try to figure out if there’s anyplace that you can go.

CALLER: Okay. But no one would have to know about the pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: No. Nobody would have to know about the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about all this. But he said he would pay for everything. Would he have to fill out any forms or have his name on anything if he was paying?

CLINIC: No. If you want to do just the pregnancy test, it’s $5. If you want to do an ultra sound — because that’s really the only way we can actually tell for sure how far along you are — the ultra sound is $100.

CALLER: So that would be better then?

CLINIC: I would think so, just to be on the safe side. Because if for some reason you’re 16 weeks, that’s going to put you in a time crunch, where you have to do something fairly quickly, at least for the state of Missouri.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: We could get you started, and then you could go to Planned Parenthood because they do not need parental consent to give you birth control.

CALLER: Well, do you guys need parental consent for birth control?

CLINIC: No. But we don’t have a doctor that can actually — they’re going to have to have a doctor talk to you and everything. We can get you started on it. But to continue on it, you need to see their nurse practitioner or their doctor. But they don’t need parental consent for that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But are you sure no one would have to know about me and my boyfriend for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No, not at all.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Tammy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And yeah, you’re more than welcome to call.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And you can talk to myself or Michele.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: You can come here for the pregnancy test, yes.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I’m scared because — well, I don’t know. But my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just — is he old enough to take care of that and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: That’s something you would actually have to contact them about in Overland Park. I’m not real sure how that law works and everything.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like, I’m just really just worried about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 14, so I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come here for the pregnancy test. You just walk in for that. You would need to be here by 4:00 today.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, is it all right — like I’d want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s fine.

CALLER: But like, we were talking about it and we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to have him sign anything or know about him or anything?

CLINIC: No. No. We are totally confidential here. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You would have to make it a separate appointment for that, and I can do that while you’re — we can set up that appointment while you’re here though.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about me being on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope. We are confidential here. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I thought of any other questions could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: That’s fine. My name’s Jamie.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Warrensburg Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh, well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Comprehensive Health in Overland Park, Kansas does them. And the Planned Parenthood in Columbia.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the one in, the first one you said? Do you have the phone number?

CLINIC: 1-800-227-1918.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just really worried because my friend told me that since like I’m going to be 14 in March and she said that —

CLINIC: You’re what?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: And she said that they would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just —

CLINIC: That doesn’t make any difference.

CALLER: Sign everything?

CLINIC: No. It has to be parents. You have to — is Kansas parents’ notification or parents consent?

CLINIC: Under 18 there has to be a guardian.

CLINIC: There has to be a guardian there that the court has appointed —

CLINIC: A parent or a parent for a legal guardian. If they don’t want to tell their parents they can get a judicial bypass and (unclear) would have to tell them how to do that. They have a judge and everything.

CLINIC: But you can call that number I just gave you and tell them and they can get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: It’s a legal thing that says you can get it without your parents knowing it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would there be — do I need a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: No. You have to call up there.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Have you already done one?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, how do you know you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had my period since like December 14, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Are your periods normal?

CALLER: Usually.

CLINIC: Every month?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Pregnancy tests are $18.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right — like I would want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: All it is is a urine test. You know?

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We don’t — that’s all we could —

CALLER: But he could bring me in?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just — we were talking about it, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to have him sign anything or anything?

CLINIC: No, but you’re going to fill out paperwork.

CALLER: Oh, all right. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents that I was there?

CLINIC: No, but someone might see you out here that knows you.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You know, that we don’t have any control over.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant –

CLINIC: Well, you could go to WalMart and get you a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh. Well, either way, if I wasn’t pregnant could I get a birth control? Could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if the pregnancy tests like at Walmart are usually accurate?

CLINIC: They are if you follow the directions.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Certainly. Julie.

RECORDING: Hello. You have reached Planned Parenthood of Columbia. The office will be closed on February 21st on Thursday for a staff meeting. If you know your party’s extension — (dial sound) (ringing)

CLINIC: Columbia Planned Parenthood. This is Sandra. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Did you need to schedule an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I don’t — I just wanted to ask some questions first.

CLINIC: What kind of question do you ask?

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: It’s $375, and we do them up to 13 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Well, usually if we do a pregnancy test we can go by the first day of your last cycle. Then once you come in for your actual appointment we’ll do a sonogram to actually see how far along you are.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just worried about it because like I haven’t had my period since like December 14, so.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on a moment.

CLINIC: This is Stephanie. Have you had a positive test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You’ll need to do that before we can go any further.

CALLER: Well, would i get that there, or —

CLINIC: You can get it here if you like. You can walk in tomorrow between 10:00 and 2:00 and we can do it if you want to.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would have to bring me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: That’s okay. We don’t mind.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my friend — I’m just worried because my friend said that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever and it would be all right?

CLINIC: Well, we won’t be able to do it in the state of Missouri without documented parental consent, which means the parent has to come here with you, be here through the whole thing.

CALLER: Oh, but I can’t tell my parents. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, then you’ll need to have this done in Illinois, which there’s a clinic in Illinois called the HOPE Clinic for women, and it’s about 15 minutes from the arch, and the state of Illinois does not require parental consent at this time.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But I can still come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Sure. Oh, sure. And we can give you the number to that clinic then when you come if you want.

CALLER: Okay. And it would be all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: For your test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yes. Not for the procedure. But if you go through with this, if you have an actual termination done, okay, he can be in the building with you, but not go through the procedure with you, okay?

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: So that’s where there’s going to be —

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. You’ll need to set up an appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So why don’t we go from there once we find out what your test says?

CALLER: Do my parents have to sign for me being on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control then?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Well, then, okay. Well, my boyfriend is the only one — like I can’t drive to pick up like the birth control. Would he be able to pick it up?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum. You might also consider getting on the shot instead of pills.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: That’s — you do the once-a-month shot or the once-every-three-months shot. That way, you know, you won’t have to worry about hiding pills.

CALLER: Well, what does that do?

CLINIC: That just protects you against pregnancy for the time that you’re on it.

CALLER: Does it work as well as the pills?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you might –

CALLER: Is it a big shot?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It’s in your butt.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So ask for information. Once you have the pregnancy test done, okay, if it’s negative, get the information when you come in for that, okay? And if it’s positive then we’ll go that route and give you information about those methods so you can decide once —

CALLER: Well, what time do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: Any time between 10:00 and 2:00 tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? We don’t offer them on Fridays.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: That’s on Forest Parkway, down by Boeing* Hospital.

CALLER: Is it all right if I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Uh-huh, go ahead.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: Actually, how old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on. Hold one second.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: I’m not really sure. Go ahead and call the number for me, and they can answer any questions that you have about that situation, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because I’m not really sure.

CALLER: I actually had a couple of other questions. It’s just that I’m scared because my last period was December 14th, and I don’t what to do. Could I come in there for a pregnancy test maybe?

CLINIC: Now that you can do. You can come in here for a pregnancy test. You can do that. They are $10, okay?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Is it all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Well, could he sign for the test?

CLINIC: For the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You can do that yourself. You don’t need a consent for the pregnancy test. But as far as the abortion part, you need to call them because I’m not really sure.

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know that I’m getting a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test turned out negative, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, we can make you an appointment for one our teen clinics and start getting birth control if you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: Well, how soon could I get birth control?

CLINIC: You have to wait until the next available teen clinic. Since you’re 13, I’m pretty sure you don’t have really any income.

CALLER: Right, I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Right. So we want to put you on one of our teen clinic days where you don’t have to pay for anything. And that’s some time in March, okay? So you’re going to come in today for the pregnancy test?

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend and see. But if I was on birth control, could my boyfriend come and pick it up? Because I don’t have any way to — I can’t drive to come get it.

CLINIC: Right. I understand, honey. First you have to get here for an appointment, first off.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So first try to get here for the pregnancy test, and we’ll work from there. We’ll make your appointments or whatever we need to do before you leave here.

CALLER: Okay. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Yes, you can. My name is Kowanna (ph). You can call me back if you need to.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: This is Eileen. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if I could ask some questions about getting an abortion?

CLINIC: Certainly. For yourself?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, it’s just — I’m just really scared. I don’t know. But my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March and she said that my parents would have to sign some stuff, but my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: No. The law says parent or legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah. In Missouri.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: What do you think would happen if you told your parents?

CALLER: I don’t know. They would — they don’t — if they found out I was having sex they would — I don’t know what would happen. They would be furious.

CLINIC: Really? And then they’d get over it, or —

CALLER: I don’t know. I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: You can go to Illinois. There’s a clinic in Granite City, and Illinois at this point doesn’t need parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can your boyfriend — if he’s 22, then he can get you over there, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You both want to do this?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You’re both in agreement on this?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: All right. Let me give you their number. You got a pen ready?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s an 800 number so it won’t cost you to call there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Wait, I’m looking for it. Hold on. Where are my phone numbers?

CALLER: I’m just really scared because like — well I don’t know if I am pregnant really, but like I’ve missed my period like the last time I had my period was like December 14. I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Well, you need to go to the drugstore and get yourself a pregnancy test. They’re about $10 or so.

CALLER: Are they accurate though?

CLINIC: Yeah, they’re very accurate.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Is there a phone number list? I can’t seem to find it. Yeah, they’re very accurate. Oh, here it is. I got it. Never mind. Hope Clinic, 1-800-844-3130.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test? I would just rather have someone else do it.

CLINIC: Let me connect you to the health center. They have a free teen clinic.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I just was wanting to ask some —

CLINIC: Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Eureka.

CLINIC: Eureka. South? Is that south or north?

CALLER: It’s south.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, there’s a Planned Parenthood on South Grand.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And there’s one on —

CALLER: Well, my friend just told me to call you guys.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: She said that it would be better to go to you for some reason. I don’t know. But —

CLINIC: We’ll be glad to run a pregnancy test. That’s $10. If you just want to do that. December 13 makes you about — you sure you had a good period in December?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That makes you now about 10, almost 11 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And so you’re still in your first trimester. But you know, pregnancy is divided into three parts.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re still in the first part, but you’re getting closer to the second part of your pregnancy when the price gets more.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So —

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know, so.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Well, then let him go get you a pregnancy test at Walgreen’s. And you can run it yourself, and if it comes out positive you call Hope Clinic. And I’d get in there as soon as possible.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: If it was negative, could I come in and get like birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah. Then you call the health center, absolutely. Then you call the same number and you do extension 549.

CALLER: 549?

CLINIC: Yeah, but I don’t know what’s closer to you. If you’re in Ballwin?

CALLER: I just don’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: Oh, so you’d rather come down here?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. If it’s negative then you make an appointment for birth control. Ask them for the free teen clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: See, you go get your own pregnancy test then it’s quicker and then you can get into Hope Clinic quicker.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have to be sure you’re pregnant. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Well, do you know if anybody has to know about me and my boyfriend or anything?

CALLER: Not in Illinois.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Here your mother would have to know.

CALLER: She would have to know if I got like birth control there?

CLINIC: No. No. Nobody has to know about birth control. You don’t need parental consent to get birth control.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody has to know about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: He’s just worried.

CLINIC: Yeah. No. He’s a little old for you though, isn’t he?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know.

CLINIC: You’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah. But why do you say that?

CLINIC: He’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, well, that’s kind of a big difference when you’re 13. That’s what I was thinking.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Does he know? I mean, are you going to use birth control after this now?

CALLER: Well, yeah. We don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Right. Right. Well, does your mom know him?

CALLER: Well, she doesn’t know we’re having sex. I mean, she knows him.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: He used to work with my dad. But —

CLINIC: I see. Well, you’ve got to really take care of yourself, hon. You get yourself — really. Let me go to Walgreen’s and buy it for you or you — you know, or you can go buy it, and then run it, and then you get yourself to Hope Clinic, and then you go — I guess they’ll get you started on some pills or something, whatever you think you want, because you could take something right after the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you think if I was on — like if I got birth control that he could pick them up because I can’t drive. I don’t have any way to get there.

CLINIC: If it’s negative, you mean?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: He’d have to bring you over.

CALLER: Well, like could he pick up the like birth control pills or whatever?

CLINIC: No, because you’ve got to sign for them.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: He would have to bring you here to pick them up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But nobody would have to know anything?

CLINIC: Not with birth control. You don’t have to tell the parents for birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And your name was Eileen?

CLINIC: Eileen, uh-huh.

CALLER: All right, thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you. Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: They do down at the Center West End (ph) office.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me give you that number– 314-531-7526. Then you want to talk to the Reproductive Health Center.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if I ask you a couple quick questions?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: My last period was like December 14th, and I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: That’s what you need to do first.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. They’re $10.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be like a specific age? My friend told me that — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents if I’m getting an abortion. My boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that, and nobody would have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: That’s a question for Reproductive Health Services. I do think that you have to have parental consent at your age at Reproductive Health Services. Now, I do think there is a clinic in Alton called the Hope Clinic for Women. I do not think you have to have parental consent there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But you first need to make sure you’re pregnant, get a pregnancy test first of all.

CALLER: I really want my boyfriend to be there. Is that okay if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: When we do the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: You can come in anytime today up until 5:30, or tomorrow you can come in anytime up until 3:30.

CALLER: Well, my friend said that you guys would have to tell on my boyfriend if he came in.

CLINIC: Would have to what?

CALLER: Would have to tell on my boyfriend if he came in. Would he get in trouble if he was there with me?

CLINIC: (Pause) He’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You know what? I would not bring him in.

CALLER: Just don’t bring him at all.

CLINIC: That’s right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Forget that you told me that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant after you guys do the pregnancy test, could you do birth control?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, how soon would I be able to get that?

CLINIC: Well, the next available appointment. And I think that’s probably about a week or maybe two weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But if I was on birth control, would anybody have to know?

CLINIC: No. We do give birth control without parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Absolutely we do.

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions that I didn’t think of just now, could I call you and talk to you?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. But are you going to come in today for a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I’d have to call my boyfriend and see when he can take me because I don’t know how else to get there.

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: Could I call and talk to you? You’re just nice. What was your name?

CLINIC: Kathy. You can call.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.
