CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not at this clinic. Our other Planned Parenthoods do though. Do you need some numbers?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What town do you live in?

CALLER: I live in Parkersberg.

CLINIC: Okay. So I assume Iowa City would probably still be closer to you?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I’ll give you a couple of different numbers in case Iowa City couldn’t get you in right away.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Think about Des Moines. Our Des Moines number is 800-568-2404.

CLINIC: And just — here’s another one. There’s an Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City that performs abortions. I’ve got that number too if you’d like that.

CALLER: All right.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know like if they have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You can do — if you want to make an appointment to come in here we can go over some things with you. There’s something called judicial bypass.

CALLER: Uh-huh. What’s that?

CLINIC: Where you talk to an attorney, and I believe it’s free, and you can go in front of a judge and ask to have an abortion without your parents.

CALLER: Okay. Does he ever say no or anything?

CLINIC: Not usually.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I don’t have all that information. I know that if you wanted to come in here though we could get you all the information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just, I can’t tell my parents at all for — like because my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married and everything, but he — my parents hate him because they think that he’s too old for me. So they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. So you would probably want — and that’s what you can explain.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You would probably want to —

CALLER: Is it okay if he comes in with me to see you?

CLINIC: That’s fine. Part of the appointment he may, they may ask that he wait out there just so they can talk to you first to make sure, just get your feelings on it, and then he can be included in it also.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: No. No. Absolutely not.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like would you be doing like the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We could. Did you do like a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: We could do another one.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s up to you.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that or anything?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh. It’s absolutely confidential.

CALLER: Okay. My boyfriend was also wondering about birth control. Do you do that there?

CLINIC: Yep. We do.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody like if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not. And if you do choose to have the abortion, if you go to one of our Planned Parenthoods they can start you on a method that day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And whether they send you home with pills; or if you choose like a depo or Lunel (sp) shot. Those are a little more expensive than birth control pills, but they’ll send you home with something that day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You could just pick them up. They may send you home with three packs. That would be three months worth. You could come to our clinic and then just pick them up every three months or every couple months.

CALLER: How much would it cost?

CLINIC: Do you work at all?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: They could be anywhere from $5 to $8 a month.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Would it be all right like if my boyfriend came and picked up like the other ones? Like if he came up and picked up the birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah. Once either patients who have abortions get a prescription that day and you leave with them, or we wouldn’t be able to see you, you know, while you were pregnant. So it would have to be — or you wait after the abortion, come in here and have an appointment, and then we get you started on a method.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, you know, most — it’s going to be you who has to be in here.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So. But after that then if you need him to pick them up, he can always stop in the office and get them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you guys don’t have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: No, it’s all confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So do you want to come in then and talk about that judicial bypass and get the information on that?

CALLER: Yeah. I just have to call him and see when he can take me.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you call him, and then call us back?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.
