CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No. We only do it at the Maryville office. Do you need their number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: It’s 769-3500.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like my friend said that you guys have to — like I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: No. The state of Indiana the law is if you’re under 18 you have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell them because if they found out I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: No. The only other thing you can do is go to Illinois because they don’t need parental consent. But you’re 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, see that’s a legal thing because of your age.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because I know anybody that comes in here that’s under 14 even if they’re just coming for a pregnancy test or to get on birth control, we have to report it to the Child Welfare Department.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. Because that’s considered child abuse if you let your child be sexually active under 14 years old.

CALLER: So I couldn’t even come in there and get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Not without me having to report it.

CALLER: Oh, well who would you have to report it to?

CLINIC: It’s the Child — what’s it called? Department of Child — Child Protective Services is what it is.

CALLER: So like would my parents get in trouble?

CLINIC: Well, they might.

CALLER: Well, what would happen to them?

CLINIC: Yeah, I don’t know exactly what they do. All I know is I have to fill out a report and fax it to that department, and then they — I don’t know if they make the phone calls or they do a home visit or something. I don’t know.

CALLER: So what could I do?

CLINIC: Like I said, probably what you could do is try calling one of the Planned Parenthoods in Illinois.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And see what their law is. I can give you that number if you can hold on a minute. I have to run to the back and get it. Can you hold on?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. (pause) Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. I have the number to one in Illinois, and then they could, you know, if they can’t do it then they probably could give you numbers to different ones.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, that’s area code 312-266-1033.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I — if I had any other questions could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: That’s fine. My name is Sandy.
