CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Owicka (ph) Park. Jessica speaking. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: The Planned Parenthood that does abortions is 312-266-1033, and they’re located at 1200 North Lasalle (sp).

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if like they would have to — like I’m just worried because my friend said that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just do that?

CLINIC: No, you — you can get it. It’s under 12 years old in the city, and like other like states and stuff, that’s where you have to be like 14 or whatever. But here it’s under 12 that you have to have a consent. So you’re fine.

CALLER: So could I come in there for like a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: If you want — they are $11 though.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for anything, but I would really actually feel better if he was there with me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just —

CLINIC: Have you been here before?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: What’s your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith.

CLINIC: And your first name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: And do you know if you’re already pregnant?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since like December 14. And I’m scared. But could I —

CLINIC: What’s your birthday?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: What’s your birthday?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Well, actually it’s $5.50 then for you. Do you have a phone number that we can reach you at, a cell phone, pager?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend just a cell phone, and we were going to use that number, but I don’t know what it is yet because he just got it.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Could I ask you, like we were actually talking about this, and we decided that we didn’t want anyone to know. Would he have to sign anything if he was there with me?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just we don’t want anyone to —

CLINIC: Yeah. Everything that goes on is confidential in a Planned Parenthood. Even if you are pregnant and you decide to get an abortion, it is confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, after like the pregnancy test there if it ended up being that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control too?

CLINIC: Um-hum. Pills are $10 a pack, and your visit would be about $16. Or you can get a breast, pelvic and pap and that would be — it’s about $44. And then if you wanted to get any depo shot like for the first depo shot which lasts three months is $53.50. And then after that it’s $33.50 every three months. And if you want to get on our Linell (sp) shot which is a once-a-month shot, that’s about $33.50.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So whichever method — we discuss the methods that you would prefer with when you come up for your visit.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So when do you want to come in? You can come in Tuesday through Saturday.

CALLER: Okay. Tuesday?

CLINIC: Tuesdays.

CALLER: What time on Tuesday?

CLINIC: Let’s see.

CALLER: But you’re sure like if I was on birth control nobody would have to know?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. It’s just my boyfriend and I don’t want to have to go through all this again. So.

CLINIC: No, they don’t– nobody has to know. It’s confidential. It’s between you and whoever you tell.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Tuesday we have a 9:00, an 11:00, and a 1:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Which one do you want?

CALLER: Well, did you say 11:00?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: That one probably. I’d have to check with him and see, but.

CLINIC: Okay, so it’s about $5.50 for you, and then if you wanted to change to birth control we would have to make an appointment either Wednesday, Friday or Saturday just because our nurse practitioner is only Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So if you’re more than 15 minutes late we might have to reschedule, and we’ll see you then.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood in Fairview Heights.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. But I can give you the phone number to the clinics that do. There’s Hope Clinic in Granite* City, and there’s the Planned Parenthood in St. Louis that does it. Do you want both numbers or one or the other?

CALLER: Just both I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. The Planned Parenthood in St. Louis, that number is 1-800-419-0301. And then Hope Clinic is 618-451-5722.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they’re going to have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of everything, and they won’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: I’m not real sure. You’ll have to call both clinics and find out what their policy is. I think one of them you might be okay, but I’m not real sure what the laws are in Missouri and Illinois, which one is the one that you need parental consent. So just give them a call and let them know your age, and find out if you will need —

CALLER: Well, I’m scared, because my last period was December 14th. I’m not really sure if I’m pregnant, but do you guys do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: We do a pregnancy test for you. That’s $10, and you can walk in and do that. But if you want to just find out for information — you don’t have to give them your name. Just say, look, I’m 13. Or you’re turning 13?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 in March. Just tell them you’re 13, you’re turning 14 in March. And ask them if you’re going to need permission or not.

CALLER: Well, I really want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Oh, that’s fine. Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. He’s just worried that you guys would have to say something about him. Would you have to say anything?

CLINIC: About what?

CALLER: About him being with me?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my parents don’t like him at all. They think he’s too old for me. They don’t know we’re having sex. And if they found out, they would totally flip out.

CLINIC: Everything is confidential here and at both of those clinics. So none of that information is going to be released, unless you do need a procedure and if it is the law that they need your parents’ consent, well, that’s going to be between you guys. But if it doesn’t require their permission, then nothing will be released to anyone.

CALLER: If after I take the pregnancy test there, it was negative, do you guys have birth control?

CLINIC: Yeah, uh-huh.

CALLER: Because I just don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah, yeah. If it comes up negative, we can make an appointment for you as a new patient, and you can come in and get birth control.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control or anything?

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential. And as a matter of fact, you can come in on a teen clinic day.

CALLER: When is that?

CLINIC: I think March 18th is the next one. But will happen is if your test is negative, we can make an appointment for you to come in on teen clinic, and then you won’t have to pay for your exam or your birth control for one year.

CALLER: Well, could I come and take a test earlier than that?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. You can come and take a test whenever you want. You can walk in. We’re open until 1:30 today, okay? And if you’re going to come in today, you need to come in before noon.

CALLER: Well, what about tomorrow?

CLINIC: Tomorrow you can come in between 8 and 12, and 1 and 4.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And as long as it comes up negative, then let them know you’re interested in becoming a patient, and we’ll make you an appointment for teen clinic.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sonya, and I’m here just about everyday except some Saturdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Planned Parenthood. This Sherry.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t do it here, but we have a Planned Parenthood in Champagne that does.

CALLER: Well, do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. Let’s see here. It is 217-359-8022.

CALLER: Okay. Could I ask a quick question?

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I’m scared because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care whatever that is so that no one has to know about it?

CLINIC: I really don’t know. Since we don’t do that here, I’m really not up on the rules.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I’d just give them a call, and they’ll be sure and answer your question up there.

CALLER: I haven’t had a pregnancy test. Do you guys do that there? It’s just I’m scared that I’m pregnant because my last period was December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, we do pregnancy tests here. If you’re not a patient here though it’s $18 —

CALLER: Okay

CLINIC: — unless you have a medical card.

CALLER: Well, no, I don’t.

CLINIC: Okay. We’re here from 9 to 1 today, 9 to 1 tomorrow. So you can come in at anytime if you want.

CALLER: He said that he would pay for everything and take care of everything.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. And he was 22, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you was what?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Yeah, that’s no problem if you want to come in and do that.

CALLER: So it’s all right? I want him to be there with me. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. So 9 to 1 tomorrow?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant after I did the pregnancy test, do you guys have birth control?

CLINIC: Yes. But before we could hand out birth control, Erica has to do an exam to see which type would be better for you. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, how soon could I get birth control after the exam?

CLINIC: Well, once she sees you. Are you going on pills or depo shot? Just pills?

CALLER: I don’t know what the difference is.

CLINIC: Well, we’ve got fact sheets. If you come in and do a pregnancy test, we can give you fact sheets. You can take them home and read up on them. Meanwhile, we can go ahead and set you up an appointment if you want to, and you can already have the fact sheets read before you come in for your appointment.

CALLER: Well, could my boyfriend pick up the pills or whatever? Because I can’t drive.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s no problem. After you do the exam and everything, and Erica decides what kind of birth control you want, we have you fill out a paper of who you’d like to have come pick them up if you can’t. You’d just put him on your list, and there shouldn’t be a problem.

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about any of this?

CLINIC: No, no, no. It’s very confidential. We don’t even have to call you. You could put on your paper no call, no mail, no nothing, and that’s no problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you want to get started with the pregnancy test for now, you can come in anytime.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I’ll call him up and then make an appointment.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Yeah. I was wanting to get Planned Parenthood.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a moment, please.

(Long pause)

(Phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: It will be just another moment. Are you there?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. Hold on, please.

CALLER: Thanks.

(Pause)

(Phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: This is Michele. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Here in Lincoln? No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that might?

CLINIC: Are you here in Lincoln?

CALLER: Well, I’m in Atlanta.

CLINIC: You’re in Atlanta. Probably the closest place would be in Peoria.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like that information?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on here and let me pull my folder. The name of the place is National Health Care. And their telephone number is 1-800-322-1622. And do you have any idea how far along you are?

CALLER: No, I don’t know. My last period was like December 14th.

CLINIC: They start at $350.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: If you’re interested, I do have a pamphlet that has like a map on it as to how to get there. It kind of tells you a little bit about what to expect and stuff. If you’re interested in coming in for that, you can let me know.

CALLER: Well, could I come in for a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: Sure. Are you a Planned Parenthood patient?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Then you can just walk in to the Health Department and have it done. We do it on a walk-in basis from 7:30 to 4:30, and there’s a $10 charge.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just scared, because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents that I’m getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Yeah. No, we don’t have to tell anybody. And even though you’re only 14 it’s not required by law for them to release that information to your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: In fact, if I were you, with him being 22 and you being 14, I would probably try to keep that pretty quiet.

CALLER: Okay. So don’t just —

CLINIC: Yeah, because of the age difference. I would not even bring that up to anybody, like when you go have the abortion. Because at age 14 I believe you are considered — you can sign for yourself to have it done.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I’ve got something here in writing. It says, “The records of any minor who receives an abortion remain confidential from disclosure to a parent so long as the minor was entitled under state law to receive the abortion without parental consent.” And you are allowed to receive an abortion without parental consent. So according to the law they cannot release that information to your parents, okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right — I want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that okay if he’s there?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s no problem with him there. But unless they say something about your age or something, I would not even bring that up to them. Just go in there assuming that you’re allowed to sign for everything and just kind of go from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Are you interested in this information at all?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you know when you’d be coming in?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see. But he was wondering after I get the pregnancy test, if it was negative, could we get on birth control real quick?

CLINIC: First of all, you do need to make an appointment and come in and have a complete physical exam and a pap. And right now we’re booking appointments probably about two weeks from now. That might be about the soonest that I could get you in.

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know about any of this at all?

CLINIC: No, no. Uh-uh, uh-uh. Do you want me to leave this pamphlet up front or do you want to ask for it when you come in? What do you want to do?

CALLER: I’ll just ask for it when I come in.

CLINIC: Okay. That’ll be fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of any place that might?

CLINIC: In Peoria? National Health Care. There is no place if you’re calling locally.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? It’s called National Health Care in Peoria. Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no, not yet. I’m just scared because like my last period was December 14, so I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you been sick?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Have you had sex without using birth control?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. I would recommend first that you have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. We have — it’s a $10 charge or we accept a medical card.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just — my boyfriend would pay for everything. Do I need a medical card? What is that?

CLINIC: No, a medical card is something through public aid.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So what you’d need to do is either come in and, like if he comes with you then he would just need to pay the $10 or give it to you when you come in. We do those today up until 4:30.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just I’m really scared because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to say anything about anything?

CLINIC: Okay. First of all, it’s confidential.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: One at 14. Another is, you better be careful. Does your parents know he’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah. They just really don’t like him. I mean, they don’t know we’re having sex or anything. If they found out they would — I don’t know what would happen.

CLINIC: He would be put in jail.

CALLER: He would be — what do you mean?

CLINIC: Because it’s — you’re 14. It’s statutory rape.

CALLER: Well, but he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to be married.

CLINIC: I know but that’s not how — you’re 14. You can’t get married unless your parents sign, and that would not even been until you’re 16. You can’t even get married until you’re 18 when you’re an adult in the state of Illinois.

CALLER: Well, what can I do? I don’t know what to do. I can’t tell my parents at all. They wouldn’t — they don’t understand anything.

CLINIC: First of all, you need to come in and have a test, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And whatever you say here is confidential, okay? Do you understand?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Nobody’s going to tell on you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you need to come in and have that test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend has to bring me. Is that all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yes. The only thing is, is once we bring you back to talk to you, he cannot come back through the door.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It would just be you and us, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: We’ll need to do the test. And we’ll go from there, because if you’re not pregnant what you really need to think about — and he’s old enough to know too — use birth control. Use a condom. If you can’t just use a condom, you need to use two forms. It’s important to protect yourself.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So, and if you’re — you’ll — well, at 14 they’ll have to — if you are pregnant we’ll go over what you’ll need to do, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: But we’ll discuss it all with you, so don’t get worried. But you do need to come in.

CALLER: But you guys could take care of everything?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: And no one would have to know anything, and you guys wouldn’t tell on my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: No. No. Nope.

CALLER: Okay, so he wouldn’t get arrested or anything?

CLINIC: No, no, no, no. No. No. Not at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay, well, thanks.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it —

CLINIC: Go ahead.

CALLER: Is it all right like if I call, if I talk to you if I had anymore questions? What was your name?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Well, do you know how much it cost?

CLINIC: It depends on a couple of things. Can I get the first day of your last period?

CALLER: I think it was December 14th.

CLINIC: December 14th?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Right now you’re eligible for our surgical services. You can choose to be awake or asleep. Did you have public aid or private insurance?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay cash for it.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 330 to be awake and 405 to be asleep.

CALLER: My friend said that you guys have to tell my parents, and they have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign that?

CLINIC: You don’t have to any consent.

CALLER: Okay. Even if I’ll be 14 in March, you guys don’t have to —

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want to set up an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call my boyfriend to see when he can get off work to take me.

CLINIC: Okay. Our next available appointment is next Tuesday.

CALLER: Okay. Could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Do you guys do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: We recommend you take a home pregnancy test before you come in just because we have to do the ultra sound when you come in. So for some reason if you’re not pregnant, you have to pay for the ultra sound. Home pregnancy tests are pretty accurate.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do, upstairs in the clinic, yes.

CALLER: Would they have to say anything, that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: To your parents?

CALLER: Well, to anybody at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. I wanted my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: I’m sorry. I couldn’t hear you.

CALLER: I wanted my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine. The only this is he can’t come in for the procedure with you and the recovery. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. But could he come to the waiting room?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Oh, okay. He’s just worried because he doesn’t want anybody to say anything about him. My parents can’t find out at all —

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: — because they just hate him. They just think he’s too old for me, so I don’t know. So it’s all right if he’s there, and you guys wouldn’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can talk to anyone when you call.

CLINIC: Did you do a home pregnancy test or go to a doctor and have —

CALLER: I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: You haven’t had one yet?

CALLER: No. I’m just scared because my last period was December 14th.

CLINIC: December 14th?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Because it does make a difference as to where I can send you depending on how many weeks along you are.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So that’s why I ask. I have to know because certain clinics don’t take people after certain periods of time.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So you said December 14th was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Well, we still have a few weeks here. The closest one that we refer to is in Peoria. And it’s called the National Health Care. And the number there is 1-800-322-1622.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Well, you can either do a home pregnancy test or come in here. And we need the first morning specimen when you get up in the morning.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if I came in there — I’m just worried because my friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff.

CLINIC: No, it’s all confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can buy an EPT over the counter cheaper than coming here. Ours are $18.

CALLER: I would just rather come in there because I don’t — just to know that it was right.

CLINIC: Okay. But we need the first morning specimen when you get up in the morning. Put it in a clean container and keep it refrigerated.

CALLER: Well, is it okay if my boyfriend signs for everything? Because he’s 22. He said he was going to take care of everything.

CLINIC: No. You have to come in and fill out the forms and that yourself.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I really wanted him to be there with me. Was that all right?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, that’s fine. He can come. That’s not a problem.

CALLER: Okay. Well, after the pregnancy test, if it was negative, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You’d have to make an appointment to have a complete physical done, yes, to have that.

CALLER: If I was on birth control, does anybody have to know?

CLINIC: No. No, they do not. It’s all confidential information.

CALLER: So does anybody have to know about anything at all?

CLINIC: No, nothing at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Were you Stephanie?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: Were you Stephanie?

CLINIC: No, I’m Rose.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Leandra (sp).

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t. I can give you a number that do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 691-9073.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of that, and we don’t have to tell my parents? Because I don’t know what would happen if they found out.

CLINIC: Tell your parents what?

CALLER: That I was going to get an abortion.

CLINIC: Oh. We don’t say anything. Everything here is confidential. I mean, as far as outside, that’s on you. But we keep everything here confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys have to tell anybody about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. We don’t tell anybody nothing here. I mean, just you. Unless you give us permission, we tell no one nothing.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: We don’t tell anyone anyway.

CALLER: I wasn’t real sure if I was pregnant. I’m just scared because my last period was like the 14th of December, so I don’t know. I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Ho.

CLINIC: Did you want to set one up?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Hold on, okay?

(Pause)

CLINIC: Someone will be right with you. I’m gonna make an appointment with our teen and counseling department. So she’ll be right with you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Andrea. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wanting to make an appointment for a pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Okay. Are you a patient with us?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Do you want to go through education and counseling? Is this for a free one?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend says that I just need to get an abortion. And if I’m not pregnant that I need to get on birth control.

CLINIC: Okay. What do you want to do?

CALLER: Well, I’m just scared. I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to put you with education, and they’ll make an appointment, okay? Can I put you on hold for a second?

CALLER: Yeah.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hi. This is Diane in education and counseling. I appreciate your holding.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: HI.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I was wanting to get an abortion, and they sent me to you.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. I see. I thought you needed a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, I do. I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: Oh, all right.

CALLER: I’m just really scared because I haven’t had my period since December 14th. And I don’t know what to do. And my friend told me that if I was pregnant — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of it, and you won’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Well, it’s not because your boyfriend’s 22. If your boyfriend’s 22, actually your parents could sue him.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because it’s called statutory rape. It’s assumed.

CALLER: Well, he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m sorry I threw that in there. I’m just saying — all right. Let’s both calm down. Your boyfriend being that age is more of a problem for you as far as the law goes than a help, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you yourself, because you are over 12, can do this. You do not need parental permission. In a lot of states around us they do require parental permission, but not here. Okay? (Deep sign). So you need to come in and get a pregnancy test, and then we can tell you all your options. And if you know you want an abortion, we can explain all that, give you the brochure of the people in town who do that.

CALLER: Well, I just can’t have this baby. Because he already has a one-year-old with his ex-wife. They’re separated, but that’s why I can’t — I mean, we have to have the abortion.

CLINIC: Well, it’s up to you. I mean, I think you’re awfully young to have a child too. So there’s many reasons, right?

CALLER: Yeah, okay.

CLINIC: Hopefully you’re going to finish school. Are you in school?

CALLER: Yeah, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. So your parents don’t have any idea that you’re pregnant?

CALLER: No. They don’t even know that I’m having sex. They know him, but they just don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Right. And they’re afraid you might be having sex probably.

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. They just —

CLINIC: And then get pregnant. He didn’t use a condom, or did the condom break or what?

CALLER: No. We didn’t have a condom or anything.

CLINIC: So he certainly (unclear) — and I think you are too, actually know that’s the way a pregnancy happens, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: All right. Well, you’re in a tough spot. And I don’t mean to put any extra pressure on you. We need to get you in and have a pregnancy test. And we’ll tell you how to take care of things.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he just doesn’t want anybody to know about this.

CLINIC: It’s all completely confidential.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control so that this doesn’t have to happen again?

CLINIC: Since you wouldn’t testify against him there’s nothing that could happen probably legally, unless you’re pregnant. And then pregnancy would be a proof of.

CALLER: So could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Not today, but yes. If you’re pregnant — that seems to be your biggest concern. You’re pretty sure you are it sounds like.

CALLER: Well, I’m not sure. I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet.

CLINIC: Have you missed a period by a week or more?

CALLER: Well, my last period was December 14th, so that’s why we’re scared.

CLINIC: Your last period was December 14th? So neither of you intended a pregnancy?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Well, I’m just checking because not using contraception and having sex is usually an indication of wanting to get pregnant. You know what I mean?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So you guys just kind of (unclear) your heads about that?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. We in love, and we’re going to get married. But he’s got to get through his ex — he’s got to divorce his ex-wife completely first.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s right. And hopefully you’re going to get through school.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Which will help you raise a child when you do decide you want to have a child.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So we have some openings this late afternoon or evening. What time of day is good for you?

CALLER: Well, I’ve got to call him and see.

CLINIC: He would bring you in?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Is that okay? Because I wanted him there with me. Is that okay if he’s there?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: What did you mean about pregnancy as proof?

CLINIC: Proof of having sex.

CALLER: Well, yeah. Okay.

CLINIC: I mean, you’d like him in there to talk about what needs to be done; is that right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It does put us in a little awkward position because we have been asked to report — actually we’re not — it’s something we’re kind of on the borderline whether we’re suppose to do anything about or not. Because there are legislators and others there concerned, not that we necessarily think it’s our job to decide that. But if we have somebody under 17 coming in with somebody over 18, then there is come concern.

CALLER: Well, are you going to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. But it would help us to decide — just don’t talk about his age when you come in. I guess I would say that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if you could come in by yourself, it might be best.

CALLER: Oh. So it would be better if he wasn’t here?

CLINIC: Usually I would say it’s better if he is there. Maybe I can put a note to the counselor you’re going to see and tell her, don’t ask. Don’t ask, don’t tell I guess is sort of unfortunately where we have to be about this.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you’ve got to talk to him about the time, you said.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Does he work?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: What time does he work?

CALLER: He works from 8 to 5.

CLINIC: All right. We have a 5:15 or a 6.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just write you down for 6 maybe?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to check and make sure that’s enough time to get there from getting off work.

CLINIC: Where does he work?

CALLER: He works in construction with my dad.

CLINIC: Oh, wow.

CALLER: He really doesn’t have like a specific place.

CLINIC: Well, how far is it from your house to Peoria?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. It’s probably like 30 minutes or so.

CLINIC: All right. Well, my recommendation would be that we pencil you in for the 6:00 appointment because it’s the latest we have. And we don’t have it everyday of the week. We only have it two days a week. So tomorrow for instance our last appointment is at 3:15. So this is your best chance. And you can always call and cancel if it doesn’t work out.

CALLER: Let me talk to him and call you back. Is that okay?

CLINIC: You don’t want me to pencil you in?

CALLER: Well, I need to call him and see exactly when.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. And my extension is — well, just do 205.

CALLER: Is that you?

CLINIC: It’s whoever has our pregnancy test scheduling book. And I’m Diane though. You can ask for me.

CALLER: What was your name again?

CLINIC: Diane.

CALLER: All right. Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that does?

CLINIC: Peoria and Champagne are the only ones that do.

CALLER: Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Champagne is 217-259-8022. Peoria is 309-691-9073.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: What’s that?

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to be told. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you won’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: He’s not your legal guardian though. That’s the only problem. Do your parents know?

CALLER: No, not at all. I don’t know what would happen if they found out. That’s why they can’t know.

CLINIC: Do they know about him?

CALLER: Yeah. They know him. They just don’t really like him at all.

CLINIC: Because of the age difference?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Well, there’s really nothing he can do because he’s an illegal guardian.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do my parents have to know though?

CLINIC: Well, that’s kind of a question for them at the clinic. I would call and talk to them. To be honest with you, at your age I don’t really know — I want to say — hang on a second and let me double check.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: As far as I know, they don’t. But call and talk to them about it and stuff.

CALLER: Well, it’s just I’m scared. My last period was December 14th, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Did you take a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, that’s the place you have to start. I mean, you can’t go down assuming your pregnant; you have to know for sure if you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I come in there and get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can. They’re $20.

CALLER: And you don’t have to tell anybody I’m in there for that?

CLINIC: No, no. No, we don’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: I wanted to bring my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant after the pregnancy test, could you guys do birth control just so that we don’t have to worry about this ever again?

CLINIC: We can. The problem is you have to an exam and everything, and we wouldn’t be able to do that at the same time.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Could you guys come in on Monday?

CALLER: I’d have to call and see if he could. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I’m there for an exam or anything?

CLINIC: No. No, we don’t. There’s no way we can tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So call him, find out what his schedule is, and then call us back.

CALLER: Okay. If I was on birth control, could he come and pick up the pills? I can’t drive. I don’t have any way to get there.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. He can do that. You’re not working I take it?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What we can do too is we have funds available through the state that can help cover the cost of your exam and stuff. Because, obviously, you and him aren’t living together yet, are you?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. I didn’t think so. Yeah. Basically, then that would help cover. So don’t worry about the money aspect; we can work with that. But first of all we need to figure out if you’re pregnant. If you’re not, we definitely need to get you on birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Christy.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. You would have to contact the Champaign Planned Parenthood for that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: Certainly. Do you have a pen ready?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 217-359-8022, and you just ask for surgical services.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I ask you a real quick question?

CLINIC: What’s that?

CALLER: It’s just I’m scared because like, well my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion but —

CLINIC: That’s not true.

CALLER: — my boyfriend’s 22. Could he —

CLINIC: That is not true.

CALLER: — do that?

CLINIC: Illinois is one of the last states that does not require parental consent, so it doesn’t matter. They cannot and will not tell your parents.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have absolutely nothing to worry about. I mean, of course you need somebody to take you. They advise that you have somebody to drive you home. So your boyfriend can take you, no problem. And your parents will never know. You do not have to worry about that. Your friend was wrong.

CALLER: Okay. Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though? It’s just I’m scared because like my last period was like December 14, so I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, you can come in here, but unless you have a medical card, the cost is $18.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Okay, well, you can come on in here. There’s no problem.

CALLER: When do you guys normally do them?

CLINIC: I’m here today until 4:00. I’m going to leave about 15 minutes at lunch. Otherwise, I’ll be here all day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can come in any time.

CALLER: What about tomorrow?

CLINIC: I’m only open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know? Just to let you know, you know the tests out at Walmart and drugstores are just as accurate as ours.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Where you just, you know, basically you just pee on the stick. They’re all very accurate now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you just want to go out to Walmart and grab one and pay $6 instead of $18, they are very accurate and you don’t have to use them just first thing in the morning. And as far as you, you know, are past when you were supposed to get your period, if it’s going to turn, it will probably turn positive right away with no mistake.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you are. As long as it’s been. So if you want to save yourself some money, I would just say, you know, go to Walmart and take a test.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out to be negative, could I come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: You can make an appointment with me and set up. You know, you have to set up an appointment to be seen, you know, for an exam, and then we can get you started on birth control no problem.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: That’s how — you know, we look at it this way. If you’re old enough to have sex, you’re old enough, you know, to of course come in here and be covered so that this doesn’t happen.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Because you are way too young for a child.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That would pose serious health risks at your age. You’re too young.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So anyway, you need to find out if you’re pregnant first and get that taken care of —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — before you come in here for birth control because we won’t see you if you’re pregnant in here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So take a test and get your appointment scheduled in Champaign.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And then call me back when everything’s taken care of. You can even come for your — if you are pregnant and you do have the termination, you can come for your post-check here because I belong to Champaign.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So all’s you’d have to do is call me back and say, you know, I had a termination in Champaign, and I need a post-check, and then we’ll get you all squared away that way.

CALLER: Okay. So what’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Roxanne.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, and incidentally I also work in Champaign.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So anywhere you go you’re going to be stuck with me. So figure out what you want to do and call me back and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
