(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Dover.

CLINIC: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions.

CLINIC: Yeah, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: How many weeks are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: January 15th. Hold on, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(Short pause)

CLINIC: Okay. January 15th, right?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: You’re about eight weeks. And the next time we’re doing abortions here is going to be on the 27th.

CALLER: Well, how much would it cost then?

CLINIC: 350.

CALLER: Okay. I was actually wondering, I’m going to be 14 on the 19th, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope. Your parents have to give you permission.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have to tell my parents at all?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. That’s the law.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents.

CLINIC: You can’t tell your parents?

CALLER: No. I mean, they know my boyfriend, and they know we’re going out, but they have no idea we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do. They’d be furious. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: I don’t know what to tell you. It’s a law. We have to record a conversation with them saying that they give you permission.

CALLER: Oh. Is there any other place I could go?

CLINIC: Did you look in your phone book?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: There’s another place called Atlantic something, Atlantic Women’s Health or something like that. I know they do them there. I don’t know what their policy is. But you can look in your phone book and give them a call.

CALLER: Okay. Could I come in to where you’re at and get a pregnancy test though just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: A pregnancy test? No, we don’t have to tell anybody about a pregnancy test. But the cost for that is $10.

CALLER: Okay. So it would be all right if my boyfriend was there and paid for that?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. We were talking about all this. He said he would pay cash for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying, would he have to sign anything or have his name on any forms?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yeah. You’re 14, you said?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: You’ll be 14 on the 19th. See the nurse is not here right now. I’m not sure what the policy is on that because I just started working here myself a couple of weeks ago. Now I know you do have to have permission for abortions, but I’m not sure about birth control. So could you call me back like around 3:00?

CALLER: Three?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Yeah, I guess. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Autumn. So you can just call back at 3. Hopefully she’ll be back here by them, and I can find out from her.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Dover.

CALLER: Hi. Can I talk to Autumn?

CLINIC: Yep, this is me.

CALLER: Oh, hi.

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: I was calling back because you said to call you back at 3.

CLINIC: Yeah. You don’t need your parent’s permission for a pregnancy test and birth control.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: When do you normally do the pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: Anytime. We’re here today until 4:30. And we’ll be here tomorrow from 8:30 to 4:30.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? When do you think you’re coming in?

CALLER: Well, I have to call my boyfriend and see, but probably tomorrow. Would that be okay?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can just come in. But we’re at lunch between 12 and 1.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

(dialing sounds) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Dover.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m not really sure. I’m just really scared because like my last period was like December 21st, so.

CLINIC: December 21st. Let me see. Is there a number where I can call you back?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m at my friend’s house and her mom’s here.

CLINIC: Oh. Eee. Let me see. Hold on, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. (pause) Okay. Hello?

CALLER: I’m here.

CLINIC: Okay. You said it was December 21st, right?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: That means you’re about 9 1/2 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — I’m just worried because like my friend told me that like — I’m going to be 14 in March, so she said that they would have to — you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is it all right if he just signs whatever, and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, it would have to be your parents.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Is there any way not to tell them? Because I don’t know what would happen. Like they can’t find out at all. I mean —

CLINIC: No. We would have to get permission from your parents, but, I mean, maybe you can try somewhere else or something that does them.

CALLER: Where else?

CLINIC: Did you look in the phone book?

CALLER: No. My boyfriend gave me this number.

CLINIC: Oh, you can look in the phone book, because we definitely have to have your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Well, who would I call then? I don’t —

CLINIC: Just look in the phone book under “abortions.” And just call around and see, you know —

CALLER: I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: You can come in here for a pregnancy test. It costs $10.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so like if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there though?

CLINIC: Yeah. You —

CALLER: But would you have to tell my parents I was on birth control?

CLINIC: I’m not sure about that. Hold on. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: (pause) Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. No, your parents wouldn’t have to know about the birth control.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. But is it all right like if my boyfriend’s there with me to —

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: — take the pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. He just — we were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to like know about us. Would you guys be asking a lot of questions though?

CLINIC: It depends. I know the nurse is going to have to talk to you about your results and everything.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would they have to say anything to him?

CLINIC: No, not unless you want them to.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: (chuckles)

CALLER: So it’s all right if he’s there with me and everything?

CLINIC: Um-hum. Yep.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right like if I talk to him and call you back if he had any other questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can just call back and talk to anybody. Okay?

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
