CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: What’s your gross monthly income?

CALLER: I don’t have a job. I’m going to be — I’m only 13. I’ll be 14 like next week though.

CLINIC: 14 weeks?

CALLER: 14 years old.

CLINIC: Oh, you’re going to be 14 years old. Okay. Hold on a second, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: (pause) Hello?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So do you know how far along you are?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m just kind of worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 26, so I don’t — I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Okay. When was it?

CALLER: December 26, the day after Christmas.

CLINIC: Okay, so you’re like 9 weeks to 10 weeks, and let me see. You have no income, right?

CALLER: Right. Well, the thing is, my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents, but my boyfriend’s 22. And he said that he would pay for everything. Is it all right if he takes care of it all and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: And if you get Medical for minor’s consent, we still wouldn’t tell your parents.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And like if you were to come here that’s why we are here, you know, like for you guys because like it’s confidential. So nobody’s going to go and tell your parents. (laughs)

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So it’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying though, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No. No. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You could just apply for minor’s consent Medical.

CALLER: Okay. Could I come in to get a pregnancy test just to make sure though?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: You can apply — you’re eligible for the SOSP card. It’s like a green card that Planned Parenthood gives out for people who qualify for it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That covers pregnancy tests, pap smear, any STD testing you want to get done, things like that. So you apply for it so you can come and do the pregnancy test and at the same time you do the pregnancy test say you want to apply for the SOSP card.

CALLER: SOST?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control and that would take care of it too?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And let’s say – our next available walk-in there will be next Monday from 9 to 4, so you can come in that day.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m not old enough to drive. Could my boyfriend pick up the birth control pills if I was on those?

CLINIC: No. Can he bring he?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. I don’t know. I mean, I’m not trying to give you bad tips, but well on that days keeps going they come and get their, you know. Like if he can bring you?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you don’t want your mom and dad to know, you know what I mean?

CALLER: Right, yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah, don’t worry. We wouldn’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: You’ve just been so nice. Could I call you if I had any other questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Dahlia.

CALLER: Okay. Monday 9 to 4?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right, thanks.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Rosalina. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this clinic, no.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Yeah. I’ll give you our number to the surgical services. It’s 446-6921.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know — it’s just I’m kind of worried because well my friend told me that since like well I’m going to be 14 later on this month, she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You have Medical or what kind of insurance do you have?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would just pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Oh, really? I don’t think they would have — if it’s confidential, then it’s confidential. If you don’t want your parents to know. Go ahead and call them. I’m not really sure, so just call that number that I told you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Ask them before you go in.

CALLER: Do you know — like the main reason why we’re scared about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Since December 26?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That was your last?

CALLER: My last period.

CLINIC: That was the first day, or the —

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: First day. Okay. You are probably about 9 to 10 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So everything — I mean, you’re still early enough to do the procedure, but you haven’t took a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You’re going to have to come in and take a pregnancy test. You can probably go into Surgical Services and do that.

CALLER: Well, my friend just told me to go to you guys. So could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: We don’t do the abortions here in our clinic. We do them on the number that I gave you right now. So what you’re going to want to do is just call them and they could give you more information. You’re going to want to call them before you go in because of the whole confidentiality thing. You don’t want your parents to know. Make sure of that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know what I mean?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, if you want. We’re closed today. Tomorrow we’re open 8 to 2.

CALLER: Oh. So I could come in tomorrow?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, would you guys be able to do birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum. You know what? You can go ahead and come in here. And take the pregnancy test. That way we can give you all the information. If it turns out you’re not, we can give you birth control. If it turns out you are, then we can give you all the information, and we can help you out more about the whole abortion procedure and all that. So why don’t you come in here and get your pregnancy test?

CALLER: But would anybody have to know about this at all?

CLINIC: About your birth control and all that? No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: For the pregnancy test we have a state funding program and it’s based on your income. And you probably don’t have any income, so — and it’s confidential from your parents. It’s based on donation, so whatever you can leave us.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if I had any questions could I call before I come?

CLINIC: Yes, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Any questions you have about the whole pregnancy and abortion and all that, when you come and get your pregnancy test you can talk to the MA about that. We can give you all the information you need.

CALLER: What’s her name?

CLINIC: It will be — I don’t know who is working tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Feel free to call this evening if you have any more questions.

CALLER: Okay. You’re Rosalina?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

(dialing sound) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Good afternoon. ProChoice Medical.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Oh. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: Do you know how far along you are in the pregnancy?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since December 26, and I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: If you’re less than 10 weeks pregnant and you aren’t planning on using any sort of health insurance, then the cost is $600.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if you would have to tell my parents? My boyfriend’s 22. Would he be able to do whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You can sign for yourself.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You don’t need anybody else there.

CALLER: Even if like — well I’m going to be 14 next month, and you’re sure?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be possible to come in and get a pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: You can. It costs $30.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Have you done a pregnancy test like from the market?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, that’s probably a good place to start.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: Um-hum. If you follow the instructions they’re over usually 99 percent correct.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I would definitely give those — you know, go to the Bonds or the market and just buy a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Would anybody have to know if I came in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this and he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it all?

CLINIC: You have to sign in and you know, kind of like a normal patient, but your medical records are your privacy.

CALLER: Okay. But would there be any records on him?

CLINIC: No. You’re the patient, not him.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You can get a one-month prescription, but the rest you need to go to your normal doctor for.

CALLER: Oh, all right. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: That’s between you and your doctor.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. I would have to call my boyfriend back and see. Could I call you back and set up an appointment? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Erica.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Medical Clinic. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Do you know how much it costs?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: December 26.

CLINIC: December?

CALLER: Yeah. Like the day after Christmas.

CLINIC: Okay. You would be looking at $320 to be awake with valium or $400 to be asleep.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know, like I’m just kind of worried because like my friend said that since I’m going to be like — I’ll be 14 later on this month, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, it’s got to be a legal guardian. When are you going to be 14?

CALLER: Like on the 9th.

CLINIC: Of March?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Oh. Well, I would just wait until then.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: I could set you up an appointment for after that date.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much would it cost?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you need to get in here before you’re 12 weeks, okay? Because that’s when our price changes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you’re going to be 14 on the 9th, any Monday or Thursday actually after the 9th, either on or after the 9th because our doctors are only here on Monday and Thursday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I just need to tell my boyfriend how much it will cost then because he said he would pay for everything. How much would it cost then?

CLINIC: If you get in here before the 20th of March then you’re looking at the fees that I told you.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: $320 to be awake and $400 to be asleep.

CALLER: So if I do it after my birthday you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend would have to bring me. Would that be all right if he was there with me?

CLINIC: Well, we don’t let anybody go in the back with you. We have other patients back there. But I mean, he can wait in the waiting area.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But he was going to pay for everything. Would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, not at all.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us, so.

CLINIC: Yeah. No. Just tell him it’s cash only, no personal checks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or we take Visa or Mastercharge.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is — do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. We repeat the pregnancy test when you come in, and you’ll also have an exam by the doctor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Well, we’re not really a birth control clinic. There’s a clinic here in Stockton called Delta Healthcare, and we send a lot of patients there for the birth control method.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. No. Not after you turn 14, no.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So basically just wait until I’m 14 and —

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: And that will be good?

CLINIC: Yeah. But go ahead and let him know what the prices are, and like I said we can set the appointment up ahead of time because you don’t want to wait until you’re 12 weeks because then it will be more expensive.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, are you going to be open tomorrow?

CLINIC: No. We’re closed on the weekend, hon.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’ll be open Monday morning at 9:00.

CALLER: Okay. So I need to call and get an appointment with you?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Margarita (sp).

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. But our center in Walnut Creek and Concord do. Do you want their phone number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Concord is 676-0300. And Walnut Creek is 935-3010.

CALLER: Okay. Well do you know — I’m just really worried about all this because like, well I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that you guys would have tao tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is that old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Oh, god. You’re boyfriend’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Umm. Yeah. Hold on, please.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, you’ll be fine. It’s just going to be a problem if you let them know that your partner is over 21, because that is against the law.

CALLER: Why is it against the law?

CLINIC: Because you, you know, it’s not — if he’s over 21 and you’re under 18 and you’re having intercourse it’s just — you don’t know about that law in California?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Yeah. You need to get informed about that. So just don’t let them know, but you don’t have to have your parents know. You don’t have to have them know that you’re getting a procure in Concord, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So you’re protected by the right of privacy, but don’t mention your partner is that old, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Do it all at Concord.

CALLER: Oh, well, my friend just told me to go to you guys because it was better to go there.

CLINIC: No. You can do it all there.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If I wasn’t pregnant though, could i come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: If you want.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just, I haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet, and I’m not really sure if I’m pregnant. So.

CLINIC: What does the pregnancy test say?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: Okay. So why do you think you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Oh, well I just haven’t had my period since like December 21st, so I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Well, you can come in and take a pregnancy test here. I mean, and you know you can come in and take a pregnancy test any day before 4:00 and we call you back at home with your pregnancy test results. Depending on that you can go there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if my boyfriend drives me there for the pregnancy test would that be a problem?

CLINIC: No. It’s just, just don’t state that that is your partner or whatever. Just — you know, we shouldn’t really want to know that that is because we do have to report it.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So just — you shouldn’t have any problem. He shouldn’t have to be involved in any of this.

CALLER: Oh. Well, he said that he was going to pay for everything, so.

CLINIC: Well, I mean, we don’t have to know where the money’s coming from as long as you have the money. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So something else is, if you are pregnant and you do want to terminate the pregnancy you can go into Medical and apply then so that Medical can cover your visit.

CALLER: Would they have to tell my parents though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Anywhere from $420 to $560 based on your gross monthly income.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you tried applying for Medical yet?

CALLER: No. It’s just, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents all this. By my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just — is he old enough to take care of it and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Let me talk to our AB coordinator. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: One moment.

CLINIC: Holding. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was talking to somebody else. I don’t know what happened to her. But could — who are you?

CLINIC: My name is Mona.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I was asking about if they would have to tell my parents if I was getting an abortion. It’s just I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, the thing is, if your boyfriend is 22 that’s a huge problem within the state.

CALLER: Why? Why is that a problem?

CLINIC: Because you’re 14. You’re a minor, and he’s an adult.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. But if you ever seen the bulletin boards or on the back of the bus, that’s a huge thing in the state of California or actually any state.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Based on age.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not 100 percent sure. That’s something you’d want to call like a local authorities about and ask them what the ramifications would be.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want my boyfriend to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Well, you don’t have to tell them your name, but you can inquire with that on an anonymous basis. But in the state of California if you’re a minor and you’re with an adult and the age difference is that great, that’s considered statutory rape, whether you’re consenting or not.

CALLER: Okay. So could I come in there to get like a pregnancy test? I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: But my boyfriend told me to call you guys. So.

CLINIC: Okay. One of the things I’m going to tell you is, do not mention how old your partner is when you come in. Are your parents aware of your relationship?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, they know we’re going out. They just don’t like him because —

CLINIC: I wonder why. (laughs)

CALLER: But they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, they can’t find out at all. I mean, I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: We’re not going to tell them, but you’re waling a very thin line and so is he because you’re a minor and he’s an adult.

CALLER: Well, are you going to tell anybody?

CLINIC: If you tell us, we have to.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So keep that in mind if you come in. We can do a pregnancy test anytime between now and 3:00 today or Thursday and Friday between 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. And then if your tests were to be positive, we’d let you know where to go from there.

CALLER: Well, if it was that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control just so that I don’t have to worry about all this anymore?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Our services are all confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, so what should I ask for when I go up there?

CLINIC: Just let them know that — well you haven’t had a period since December, right?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Are you having any symptoms of pregnancy — breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Change in eating habits?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. I would say go ahead and request birth control. And we’ll do a pregnancy test when you come in, and then we’ll go from there. So just request the birth control. You can do it with or without the exam. And if your test is negative, we’ll give you birth control that day. If it’s positive, we’ll advise you from there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control — it’s just I cant’ drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the refills or whatever?

CLINIC: Well, pretty much happens is generally we’ll start you off with three cycles of pills. At the end of the third cycle you need to come back in and have your blood pressure checked, your weight. We ask you a list of questions about how you’re doing on the pill. If everything is good, we’ll give you the rest of the year at that time.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you’re having problems, they’ll change you.

CALLER: Oh. So I would only have to make like a couple visits?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend didn’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Right. Yeah. You don’t go through what you’re not ready for basically. So for birth control we check in at 7:00 a.m., 8:45 a.m., or 12:45 p.m. Or we can make an appointment on a Tuesday evening.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: When he can bring me. But.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, check with him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And give us a call back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Should I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Yes. My name is Mona.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know anybody that does?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood in San Jose. We have three clinics there that perform them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Nobody here in Gilroy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have the number for one of them?

CLINIC: Sure. The Blossom Hill Clinic, which is the closest one, is 281-9777.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, like I’m just worried because like, well I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents that I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care if it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think — it’s completely confidential. I don’t think, I don’t think your parents would have to be notified at all.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: That I’m aware of.

CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because like I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, so —

CLINIC: Yeah. You need to get in as soon as possible.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Sure. We can do that today for you. You need to be here by 5:00 the latest.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would be the only way I could get there. Is it all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to — we were just talking about all this, and we didn’t want anyone to know anything about us. But would you have to ask a lot of questions if he was there?

CLINIC: No. We don’t ask him anything. We just speak to you.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You have to make an appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, well, — but it’s just I don’t want to have to go through all this again. So.

CLINIC: Yeah. We wouldn’t be able to do that for you today because that’s a completely different service. We do pregnancy tests every day. Anything else does have to be by appointment. Okay?

CALLER: Oh, well, so after the pregnancy test could I like — if it was — how soon could I get birth control?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay, can you come in tomorrow? We have Teen Clinic here very Wednesday, 2:00 to 6:00 for birth control.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I was on birth control would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you about it? What was your name?

CLINIC: You need to come in. I’m just a front office person.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I just need a —

CLINIC: When you come in today or tomorrow you can talk to the person that does your test. She can help you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t, but we do them in Sacramento. I could give you the number.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s 916-446-6921.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried because like, well, my friend said that since I’m going to be 14 in March she said that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Let me doublecheck, okay? I’ll put you on hold.

CALLER: All right. (pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You don’t need parental consent for that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to see?

CLINIC: Tomorrow between the 9:00 and 11:00 and 2:00 to 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would be the only one that could bring me. Would it be all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just, the thing is, we were talking about all this and we decided that we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would you have to ask him anything?

CLINIC: Let me put you on hold. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: What were you saying?

CALLER: I was just wondering if you guys would have to ask my boyfriend any questions if he was there.

CLINIC: Ask him any questions? Do you not want him to know anything? Or —

CALLER: Well, he knows. I mean, we’ve been talking about it. But it’s just, we don’t want anyone to know — we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us because —

CLINIC: Okay. He doesn’t know anything and we don’t need to ask him anything. But because you guys — you know, the different ages? CPS might get involved.

CALLER: What is that? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Okay. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: And how old is he?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. He’s 22, you’re 14. You’re still a minor.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: So because of that purpose, CPS might get involved due to your age difference. You’re still a minor. He’s already an adult.

CALLER: Oh. Well, who would have to call them?

CLINIC: Who is going to call them?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: By law — hold on. Let me put you on hold. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thanks for holding. (another clinic worker.)

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: You say you’re 14 and he’s 22?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March, yeah.

CLINIC: So you’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, so if you come in most likely we will need to, you know, call CPS and make them aware of the situation.

CALLER: What situation? What do you mean?

CLINIC: The situation that he’s an adult and you’re a minor, and you’re having, you know, intercourse with him.

CALLER: Well, why is that bad?

CLINIC: Because you’re a minor.

CALLER: Well, but —

CLINIC: But under state regulations —

CALLER: He’s not hurting me or anything. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He said he was going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: Yeah. But that’s the law. It’s the law. So if you come in and you tell us, you know, how old you are and how old he is, we have to report it to CPS.

CALLER: Well, what if I don’t tell you?

CLINIC: Well, if you don’t tell us then that will be on you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But if they do ask you and you do tell them, you know, just to let you know that CPS will be called.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But I just wanted to get a pregnancy test because I don’t know if I am pregnant. I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since like December.

CLINIC: Yeah? Yeah. Well, when you come in we can run a pregnancy test. But if they do ask you, you know, and you do tell them, we have to report it.

CALLER: Well, if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, as long as you don’t tell us his age or anything then that should be fine.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t want to have to worry about all this again. So.

CLINIC: Definitely. It’s just to let you know and make you aware that it is against the law, and by law we have to call CPS and let them know.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Just to let you know. And then if you go anywhere else it will be the same situation.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: It’s state law.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant and I was on birth control pills from there, would he — it’s just, I don’t — I can’t drive yet. Would he be able to pick them up?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: It has to be you.

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, so, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Patty.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Hello. You’ve reached Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center. (Spanish interpretation) If you know the extension of the person you are — (dial tone)

One moment, please, while I transfer your call. (music) We’re sorry. We are helping other clients right now. We appreciate your continuing to hold. (music) Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center. Please be assured that your call will be answered as quickly as possible. (music) At Planned Parenthood Westside your call is very important to us. (phone rings)

Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. (male receptionist)

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. We do abortions here up to 14 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: We have two methods of abortion. We have medical abortion and surgical abortion. Depending on which one, a medical abortion is, we do them here but only up to 7 weeks. And surgical we do here up to 14 weeks. So depending on your level of income on a monthly basis it looks like it’s between $420 to $560 for the surgical and between $480 to $600 for the medical.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t really have any income. I mean, I’m going to be 14 in March, and I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you thought about applying for Medical?

CALLER: What’s — no. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. I mean, it’s just — the thing is, like, I’m worried because like since I’ll be 14 in March my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Can you hold on one second? Let me find out. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Christine? One second, okay?

CALLER: Okay. (music)

CLINIC: Hello? (female assistant replaces male receptionist on phone)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Hi, is this Christine?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: My name’s Claudine (sp).

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Manny just had me take your call to schedule you for an ultrasound.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: How you doing?

CALLER: I’m kind of worried about everything, but —

CLINIC: Yeah. Okay. Well, we’ll get you all informed on how the process goes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty. Let me just get to my computer screen. So, Christine, first of all, you’ve done a pregnancy test at home or another —

CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m really scared.

CLINIC: December 21st. All righty. Okay. Could you come into the clinic today for an ultrasound if we have an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Maybe tomorrow.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just, my boyfriend would have to bring me. He’s the only way I could get there. So, I have to call him and see. But is that all right if he’s there with me?

CLINIC: Yeah. Let me see what I have available tomorrow. Can I put you on hold for one minute?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks. Hang on.

Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me see. Tomorrow’s Wednesday. Let me see what I have. I have something — hmm. That provider is out.

CALLER: Do you know — I was actually asking the guy before, like it’s just I’m really worried about all this because my friend told me that since like I’m — I’ll be 14 in March. She said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is it all right if he takes care of it?

CLINIC: Umm, I’m not sure exactly about that, and I’m not — I — I’m not sure if your parents necessarily need to be informed. Do you want me to find that out before you schedule?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, they can’t find out at all. I mean, if they found out I don’t know what would happen. I mean —

CLINIC: Yeah, I understand. All right. Let me go check on the exact guidelines around that so I can give you that information before you come in, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Can you hold on one more second?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks. (music) (ringing) (dialing sounds) (ringing) Hello. You’ve reached Planned Parent Westside Health Center. (dial tone) One moment, please, while I transfer your call. (music) The Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center Office is conveniently located on the second floor at 1119 Pacific Avenue above Logos Bookstore in Santa Cruz. Our switchboard is answered Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (music) (dial sounds) (ringing) (dial sounds) Are you there? (ringing)

Good afternoon. Appointment desk.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was talking to Claudine and I was put on hold but the phone got disconnected, so I was calling back.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. You know what? She wanted me to let her know if you called. In case you guys get disconnected, what number can she call you back? I’m going to transfer you.

CALLER: Well, I don’t — I’m at my friend’s house and her mom’s here, so if you call then she would answer the phone.

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold on?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. (music) Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood Westside Health Center. Please be assured that your call will be answered as quickly as possible. (music)

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Thanks for calling back. Did you get tired of waiting, or did I –

CALLER: The phone got disconnected.

CLINIC: I tried to pick you up from another line, and it didn’t work, so that might have been what happened. I’m glad you called back. Well, Christine, I’m going to let you know really straightforward what the situation is.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I hope that you’ll still come to our clinic. First of all, we are not required to inform your parents directly. What we’re required to do, you know, if you come to the clinic is report the situation. Basically, it is not legal for someone of 22 years old to have sexual intercourse with a minor.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married. I don’t understand.

CLINIC: I know. It’s confusing, and I can get you more information on it. The really wonderful person to talk to — her name is Sue — and she’s not in the clinic right now, but she will be shortly. So I’ll give you as much information as I can.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And then you can talk further to her, you know, definitely.

CALLER: Well, who would you have to report it to if you weren’t telling my parents?

CLINIC: We’re required to report the incident to the police.

CALLER: Oh, well —

CLINIC: And you could —

CALLER: Well, what could happen? I mean, would I get arrested?

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not. What would happen is that we just send in the information to them, and this is — Sue will be able to give you more information. But you’re not even required to talk to them. It’s up to you whether you want to do that or not.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: We encourage you to do that, but we can talk to you more about that later. But we’re required to let them know about the situation.

CALLER: What situation?

CLINIC: Just that, you know, that there was an incident of this person over 21 years of age having intercourse with a minor. BecaUse at this point it is illegal in this state. Okay? It’s called statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married, and he’s going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: Yes. Christine, I absolutely hear you. I’m just telling you what the law says right now.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And what we’re required to do. So —

CALLER: So if I came in with him, he would be reported and I wouldn’t be able to see him anymore?

CLINIC: Not necessarily, no. I think that it would be a good idea for you to talk to Sue about it. But let me see if I can give you any other details. We would just let them know, but again you would not be required to even talk to the police at all.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, I don’t want anybody to know about this. So.

CLINIC: Um-hum. And normally our services are completely confidential. Like normally without this kind of circumstance that I’ve told you about the law, our services are completely confidential. Your parents don’t need to know, no one can ever find out anything. But then we are required in this specific situation to let the police know, and then it’s your choice of what to do from there, whether —

CALLER: Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: I would strongly encourage you — let me see. I would strongly encourage you to come in for your ultrasound. And Sue will be in later today, so she’ll be able to tell you more about the situation. But I would really encourage you to come in for an ultrasound.

CALLER: But the only way I could get there would be if my boyfriend brings me.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Um-hum. Okay. And he — yeah. We’ll talk more with Sue about that, okay? It’s very possible that you can both come in and just have a normal visit and leave and that we — you know, we make a phone call to report it and that, you know, that nothing else needs to be done, and you can get your care through our clinic. But we’ll clarify that with Sue, okay? Because she really knows all the details of —

CALLER: Well, would they have to say anything to my boyfriend? Would they get his name and arrest him after we leave?

CLINIC: I highly doubt it. I think really that we need to have Sue answer the questions for you, because I’ve pretty much told you everything I know. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I come in for like a pregnancy test and it showed that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control and I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: I think in any case we’re required by law to make a report.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I gotta talk to my boyfriend and see what he says. Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure. Do you want me to have Sue give you a call when she gets in to answer some more of your questions?

CALLER: Well, no, I can’t have anyone call me, but —

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But I’ll call back.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me give you my extension so that you can get right through to my phone and you can leave me a message if you want. You can either use my extension which is 56, or you can just call the regular number. If for some reason I’m not there and you want to try to talk to Sue —

CALLER: Just ask for Sue?

CLINIC: Yeah. You can call the regular number and ask for Sue. She also has an extension, and she’s not often at her desk either, but she’s at extension 23. So if you don’t reach either of us on our extensions just try the regular number and have someone look for it. And Sue would definitely be able to answer all your questions and help you decide how you want to go about things. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: All righty. I hope that — yeah. Just call back if we can help or answer any other questions. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Take care.

(phone clicks)
