CLINIC: Little Rock Family Planning. This is Chris. How can I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: Yes, we do.
CALLER: Oh. Do you know how much it costs for that??
CLINIC: Pardon me?
CALLER: Do you know how much it costs for that?
CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are.
CALLER: Oh. How do you know how far along you are?
CLINIC: When was your last menstrual period?
CALLER: January 3.
CLINIC: Hold on one second.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: (pause) You said January the 18th?
CALLER: The third.
CLINIC: (pause)
CALLER: Are you still there?
CLINIC: Um-hum. I got you showing to be about 9 weeks.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay? 3 to 11 weeks you’re looking at $525 if you want to be put to sleep. If not, you’re looking at $475.
CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. You have to either have a parental consent or you have to come into our office and do what’s called a court bypass.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: That’s where you’ll be emancipated as a — the judge. You’ll have to go down to the courthouse, na he’ll emancipate you to have this procedure done.
CALLER: Okay. Do I need like a lawyer for that, or?
CLINIC: No, you don’t need a lawyer. You come and get the paperwork from us.
CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge ever say that I can’t? Like does the judge ever say no?
CLINIC: It depends on what reason he would have to do that. But normally, no. He does not.
CALLER: Okay. So it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but he doesn’t want anybody to know about us. Would you– if he was paying for everything would he have to sign anything?
CLINIC: No, he wouldn’t have to sign anything.
CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to tell the judge about him or anything?
CLINIC: You would have to come in. We’ll do an ultrasound. One-on-one private counseling we’ll collect the rest of the fee, and we’ll send you down to the court.
CALLER: Okay. But would the judge have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?
CLINIC: No, the judge doesn’t even see your boyfriend because that would lessen your chances.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: All right. So, but if I turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?
CLINIC: No. You have to go find your gynecologist or physician.
CALLER: Okay. So how do I set up an appointment to come there?
CLINIC: I can set you up one right now.
CALLER: Okay. It’s just my boyfriend works 8 to 5, and he’d be the only way I could get there. Do you guys —
CLINIC: Do you want to call him and check your schedule?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Okay, and my name is Chris.
CALLER: Okay. Well, when do you guys normally have — when do you have an opening?
CLINIC: I can see you either Thursday, Friday or Saturday — well, Thursday or Friday of this week is when I can see you.
CALLER: What time on that? What time on Thursday or Friday?
CLINIC: I can see you around 1:15 on Thursday or Friday.
CALLER: Okay. When would the judge see me? The same day, or —
CLINIC: Yeah, the same day.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: Okay?
CALLER: So it’s just all in the same day and everything and it’s just a one-day thing?
CLINIC: Right.
CALLER: Okay. All right. So let me call him and call you back. Is that all right?
CLINIC: That’s fine.
CALLER: Okay, thank you.
