CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Southeast Mesa. This is Annette. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: Yeah, I can give you the Tempe number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 967-9414.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know, I’m just worried because like well I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents, but my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You would have to call Tempe and see how they handle that, hon.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, I’m just — the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 26, so I’m just scared.

CLINIC: Well, did you do a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Well, that would be advisable first.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there and do that?

CLINIC: It’s a walk-in, and it’s $10.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, but it’s just we were not wanting a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it?

CLINIC: I don’t think they care who’s paying for it, okay?

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I’m not sure about being that you’re 13.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay? I don’t know if they have to report to CPS or not.

CALLER: Well, who’s that? What do —

CLINIC: Child Protective Services.

CALLER: Why would they have to do that? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because your boyfriend’s 10 years older than you.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: For one thing.

CALLER: You mean —

CLINIC: You’re only 13 years old.

CALLER: Well, is that bad?

CLINIC: It’s because it’s the law of Arizona.

CALLER: What law?

CLINIC: It’s the law of Arizona that we have to report it to CPS.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, would they tell my parents?

CLINIC: I have no idea.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I have no idea.

CALLER: Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: You would have to call Tempe and ask them because we don’t do abortions here, okay?

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So call them and ask them for sure.

CALLER: But if I came in for a pregnancy test would you have to call those people?

CLINIC: I’m not sure.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: If it’s just a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well I just really wanted to know if I was pregnant or not.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, the only way you can do is do a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, yeah, so can I come in there and do that and not get in trouble?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know if we have to report 13 years old positive test or not, hon.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if it came out that it wasn’t, that I wasn’t pregnant would that be all right?

CLINIC: Hang on, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: (pause) Okay. Were we talking about the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah, we have to report it.

CALLER: Oh, even if it said that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Yeah. We have to report it.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: All I can do — take a home pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, are those usually right?

CLINIC: Not all of them accurate, no.

CALLER: Oh, well, how do you know which ones are good or not?

CLINIC: We don’t know.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? All I can say is, do a home pregnancy test. You know, because the farther along you get the more it costs and everything to even get an abortion. But yes, we are required by law to report to CPS.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant could I come in there for birth control?

CLINIC: We still have to report to CPS.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Not that they would do anything. We don’t know if they would do anything, but we are required by law to report it to CPS.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, hon.

CALLER: Well, all right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood, Melrose (ph). This is Susan. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see — well, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this particular clinic. I can give you — where are you located?

CALLER: I’m in Cave Creek.

CLINIC: Cave Creek. What’s the closest surgery place to Cape Creek be? Seventh Street? Okay, I’m going to give you our Seventh Street and Montebello (sp) phone number. That is 602-277-1168 or 1169. Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I ask you a question real quick? I’m just really worried because like I’ll be 14 next month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of that and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Can you hold? You’re 14?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on. (pause) Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Do you have a minute to hold on the phone? I’m going to make a phone call to one of our pregnancy options counselors and see what she has to say?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Hold one second, all right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks. Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Hi. What would happen is, yes we would have to report it, but whether or not CPS does anything that is up to them, but we do have to report it. It does have to be reported.

CALLER: Oh. Why?

CLINIC: It’s the law of Arizona.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any place — well —

CLINIC: As far as I know, any place that you do go by law should have to be reporting it.

CALLER: Oh. So, I couldn’t get a pregnancy test either?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, you could come in and get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, would you have to report that though?

CLINIC: Do you know for sure if you’re pregnant or not?

CALLER: Well, no, that’s why —

CLINIC: You think you may be but you’re not sure.

CALLER: I just haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Are you gaining weight and feeling like your breasts tender and you feel different?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: No?

CALLER: I just haven’t had my period.

CLINIC: The end of December (speaking to PP).

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second, all right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks. (pause) — pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah, if you just come in as a, just doing a pregnancy test and you’re not an actual Planned Parenthood patient, we would not have to report it. Once you become a Planned Parenthood patient, if you’re seen by the clinician then we would have to report it.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay? But just coming in for a pregnancy test, you are not required to see a clinician.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant would I be able to get birth control though?

CLINIC: Yes, but I don’t — I do believe we would have to report it then.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But we just fill out a form, call CPS, and we let them know what’s going on, and —

CALLER: Well, when you not have to report it?

CLINIC: When would we not have to report it?

CALLER: What’s the age limit for not having to report it? Like I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Right, I know that, but you’re 13 now and he’s 22. And by law, anybody over the age of 18 having intercourse with anybody 13 or under, it has to be reported.

CALLER: So it’s because you know about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what if I — would it be better just not to say anything about him?

CLINIC: That’s up to you.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But if you do want to come in for a pregnancy test, they are $10.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s a walk-in basis. You do not need an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And today we are doing them up until 5:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if he brought me today, would I be able to get in there and you guys would be able to do it today, or —

CLINIC: Oh, what, the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yes. It’s a walk-in basis up until 5:00 this evening.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions could I call and ask you before I came in?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. You were Susan?

CLINIC: Yes, I am.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thanks a lot. Bye bye.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I come in there for a pregnancy test just to see if I am pregnant? I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 26.

CLINIC: December 26? Yeah, you can come in and take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: We do them from 3:00 to 5:00.

CALLER: Today or —

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see, but how much does it cost?

CLINIC: They start off at $400.

CALLER: The pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Oh, no, no, the abortion. The pregnancy tests are $10.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I was like what? But do you know if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, the thing is, I can’t drive. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Just as long as you give him a note saying it’s okay for him to pick them up.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Okay. Well, what time could I come in tomorrow?

CLINIC: For a pregnancy test? Nine to noon and 2:00 to 4:00.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how long does it normally take?

CLINIC: It depends the people that are here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, like on an average?

CLINIC: About 15 minutes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I get birth control right away if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You’d have to set up an appointment.

CALLER: Well, how long does it take for that?

CLINIC: Right now we’re booking to the ending of March.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. Well, if I had any other questions could I calla nd talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Depending on how many weeks pregnant you are. How many weeks pregnant are you?

CALLER: I don’t know. I just haven’t had my period for awhile. So.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Well, do you happen to remember the first day of your last menstrual period?

CALLER: Well, I think it was like — it was December 21st, so.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Well, that’s good. Let me see. December 21st, and then today’s the 27th of February. That puts you 10 weeks. That would be $380 if we could get you in before you turn 12 weeks.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yes. If you’re already 12 weeks or more, the price goes up to $800.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Right. But for right now though, you are 10 weeks. That means you have two weeks.

CALLER: Well, do you know — I’m just worried about it because like my friend told me — like I’m going to be 14 years old in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: How old are you again? 14?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: You will be 14 in March. You know what? Let me check. Hold on, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hi. Thanks for holding.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: You want to make an appointment?

CALLER: I was wanting to know if like they would have to tell my parents about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No. There’s nothing about your parents. But because you’re 13, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: There is a law that we have to report 13-year-olds who are having sex, but we don’t tell — it has to be reported to CPS, but it’s not like them to call you or anything.

CALLER: Well, could I get in trouble?

CLINIC: No. They don’t call you. It’s like, we just have to report, and we don’t tell them what you’re here for.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We just have to report anybody that’s 13 or younger that is having sex. And then if they get like a list of, you know, calls from different agencies, or whatever, then they might look into it kind of thing. But they want to kind of monitor, you know, cases that may be abuse. So that’s how they kind of — they put it on the computer. They say, okay. They never, in this office, have ever wanted to talk or came to see them or anything like that. But there’s nothing concerning your — like your parents, there’s no minor consent laws in Arizona. So your parents don’t have to know about it.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he was going to pay for everything. Would they have to know about him?

CLINIC: Well, how old is he?
CALLER: 22.

CLINIC: They make take his information too because —

CALLER: Well, could he get in trouble?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Could he get in trouble?

CLINIC: I don’t know, sweetie. We have to report certain age differences.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But it’s really a matter — I’m not sure what the laws are as far as what they — you know, try and prosecute or if they try and not prosecute. It’s not like your parents are trying to or you are trying to bring up charges to him. If it was consensual I don’t know where they draw the line and investigate or not.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You know what I mean?

CALLER: Okay. Yeah. Well, it’s just, the thing is I don’t really know if I am pregnant because I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st. And I don’t know. Could I come in there for a pregnancy test and see?

CLINIC: Sure, hon. You can go to any Planned Parenthood and walk in it at their walk-in appointments. And they’re $10.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if my boyfriend comes in with me — because like he was going to pay for it — would he get, would we get in trouble for —

CLINIC: Oh, no, not for a pregnancy test at all.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would you have to report it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Not just for a pregnancy test.
CALLER: Oh. Well, if the pregnancy test came out negative could I get birth control?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. You may want to wait until you’re 14, and then they don’t have to report that.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: You turn 14 in March, right?

CALLER: March 19th.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Just it’s different for abortion services than it is for, you know, general services. But if you’re 14, we wouldn’t have to report the fact that you’re a minor having consent. We would report other — there’s other laws that require us to report certain things; that, you know, if you’re 14 that takes care of that. But for abortion, you want to make sure you get in, you know, before you turn 12 weeks or whatever because your price is going to keep going up.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just have to think about all this. could I — if I thought of any other questions

CLINIC: (unclear) your pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: We have to have a positive pregnancy test before we can schedule you anyway.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay. Well, could I call you back if I thought of any other questions? What’s your name?

CLINIC: Sure, hon. It’s Alicia.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Chandler?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No. They do those at our Tempe or Phoenix office.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have the phone number for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. Tempe is 967-9414. Do you want the Phoenix one also?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: 602-277-1168.

CALLER: All right. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried about everything because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 next month that you guys would have to tell my parents that I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to tell, or is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: No. That wouldn’t matter. Why don’t you go ahead and call Tempe and see what their procedure is for that?

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could i come in there for — What?

CLINIC: I don’t think there’s parental notification right now.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: The law comes and goes. (laughs) And as far as I’m aware, but the AB or abortion clinic would know for sure what the current standings are. (chuckling)

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, I just don’t really know like if I am actually pregnant for sure. I just haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I’m worried.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, you should do a pregnancy test first of all.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for that?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah, you can come here for that.

CALLER: But would you have to tell my parents about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything if I was there?

CLINIC: Well, did you say you’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah. But I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: Okay. And your boyfriend is 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: There’s actually a — we’re required by law to notify CPS or child protective Services.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re 13 and he’s 22. You’re under legal age and he’s over.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: Probably nothing. But we’re required to notify them.

CALLER: But would they tell my parents?

CLINIC: Probably not. That’s something, you know, I can’t give you all the details on. But, you know, it’s a state law that we’re supposed to report underage sexual activity.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so if I came in there for a pregnancy test you would have to tell those people?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You can do a home pregnancy test. Do you know how to get one of those?

CALLER: Well, don’t you just go to the store and get one?

CLINIC: Yeah, any pharmacy or drugstore has them, grocery stores even.

CALLER: Well, are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Uh-huh, yeah. They’re pretty similar to what we do here. But you would probably want to do that and make sure that you’re pregnant before you, you know, start worrying about everything else that’s going to happen.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You know, start with finding out for sure.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control, just we don’t want to have to worry about all this again.

CLINIC: Yeah. You can do that.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody that I was getting birth control?

CLINIC: No. But, again, we would still be required to report it to CPS.

CALLER: So you would have to tell them about my boyfriend if I was there for birth control?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Oh. Well, even like after I was 14?

CLINIC: Yeah. The — let me check on what the age is. When will you be 14?

CALLER: March 19.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on. Are you there?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, either way, whether you’re 13 or 14, it has something to do with the greater-than-five-year age difference and you being a minor.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what if nobody — what if I didn’t tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: That could happen. Nobody would know the difference.

CALLER: Well, would that be better then?

CLINIC: Better than getting pregnant at your age probably.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: (laughs) That would be my idea on that anyway. Why don’t you go do a pregnancy test first and see what that shows? and then give us a call back and we’ll see what we can do.

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Truanne (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Paula.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: The charge for an abortion, depending on your blood type is either $440 or $380.

CALLER: Okay. Well, so do you know — like I’m just worried about this because my friend told me that since like I”m going to be — I’ll be 14 next month.

CLINIC: 14 weeks or 14 years old?

CALLER: 14 years old. She said that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: We don’t ask. We don’t need parental consent in the state of Arizona.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you have an appointment already?

CALLER: No. I just am worried about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do. So.

CLINIC: Okay. Your period was December 21st you said?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Let’s see. Okay. Did you want to schedule an appointment now or did you want to call back?

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Are you wanting to schedule an appointment now?

CALLER: Well, I need to find out if I’m actually pregnant really.

CLINIC: Okay. So just come on in and we’ll take a test, and then if you are we can go ahead and set you up with an appointment. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, what are your hours?

CLINIC: We’re open until 7:00, but we stop doing pregnancy tests at 6:30, and the test is $10.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, but it’s just we were talking about everything, and we decided that we didn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign any papers if he was paying for everything?

CLINIC: No. He wouldn’t have to sign any papers. We don’t — it doesn’t matter where the money comes from. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So if you want to come in today the test will be $10, however you pay. It doesn’t matter. Just come in and we’ll have you fill out the paperwork.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just — I have to call my boyfriend to see if he can bring me tonight, but it would be all right if he was there with me?

CLINIC: He doesn’t need to be there with you.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Unless you need him to pay. He doesn’t have to be there. I mean, if you’re — it doesn’t matter how old you are. There is no parental consent needed in the state of Arizona to have anything done family planning-wise. So if you’re wanting birth control, if you’re wanting to get a pregnancy test, that’s not important. But what I would recommend to you, just to make you aware, that if you come in they will ask the age of your partner, and if your partner is four years your senior —

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: — we will have to call CPS.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you are a minor.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: We would just call and report that you were involved with a man who was four years older or greater than you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so it would just be better not to have him there?

CLINIC: Pretty much.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So we will see you then before 6:30?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see if he can take me, but I think so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, I could get birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about anything?

CLINIC: Nope, nope.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. We’ll see you then.

CALLER: And your name was Paula?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay? Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.
