CLINIC: Unfortunately, not here in Oregon. I’m not really sure about Washington.

CLINIC: You can call Washington Planned Parenthood, but you have to travel there though.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would drive. What’s the number for that?

CLINIC: Actually, they’re all (unclear). Our affiliates are all 14. I can give you the numbers.

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: I know, but you’re 13 right now.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Either way, you still have to tell — you’re going to be 14. You still have a whole year. In other words, you have to be 15.

CLINIC: I don’t know. They’re probably a little more strict. You might try Washington and see what their limit is.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. I just have to get a pregnancy test really. Do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: No. You can go buy one at the store.

CALLER: Oh. But are those usually right?

CLINIC: Yeah, they’re very correct and accurate.

CALLER: Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: You would have to go through your doctor or through like a — if cost is an issue, a county health department would be able to give you some for a very minimal price.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Well, not if you’re not a patient right now.

CALLER: Well, could I be a patient and get birth control?

CLINIC: Not at this time. We’re not accepting patients. We’re seeing people for abortion.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, when do you normally see people for pregnancy tests and birth control?

CLINIC: We don’t usually do pregnancy tests because people can buy them themselves.

CALLER: Oh, okay. When do you guys normally see people for birth control? My boyfriend told me to call you guys, so that’s why I’m trying to —

CLINIC: Well, the first thing you need to do is to see if you’re pregnant or not. That’s the big issue.

CLINIC: No. You’re the one having the abortion, so it applies to you. You have to be 15. So if you’re going to just be 14 then you need to have a parent signing off on all of the forms with you.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents at all. I mean, if they found out me and my boyfriend were having sex I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, we’re not going to provide an illegal abortion for you. That would get us in a lot of trouble.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents and you wouldn’t get in trouble?

CLINIC: It’s illegal to provide an abortion for someone under the age of 15 without parental consent.

CALLER: Well, is there anyplace I could go?

CLINIC: It’s a state law or it might be a federal law; I’m not sure. But that’s the law. So I mean, you really have —

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: You have to tell your parents or —

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents.

CLINIC: Well, there’s nothing that I can do to change the law. We’re not going to provide the abortion for you unless your parents sign off on everything.

CALLER: Would you have to tell them about my boyfriend though?

CLINIC: Well, they’re going to know that you got pregnant from someone. That’s up to you. I don’t know. We just need them to sign off consenting to the procedure.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s a law. There’s nothing that we can really do about it.

CALLER: Well, could I get a pregnancy test without my parents having to know about that?

CLINIC: Yeah. You can get a pregnancy test. They’re the same that you buy in the store even.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: I think that you still have to be 15 to do that.

CALLER: So what should I do then?

CLINIC: Well, I mean, you might just want to talk to your parents about what’s going on in your life.

CALLER: But they don’t ever listen to me. I mean, they don’t ever understand anything.

CLINIC: Maybe it’s just time that they know what’s going on with you. And maybe it will be hard for them at first, but a lot of times after just talking things through, people can be more understanding. I mean, do you know that you’re definitely pregnant? Have you taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd, and I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: Right. Well, do you normally miss periods?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you been feeling pregnant at all?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: Do you feel nauseous or do you have any breast tenderness or anything like that?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, those would be signs of pregnancy, but not everybody feels like that when they’re pregnant. Some people don’t have any signs. So I guess the best thing for you to do would be to take a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If it’s positive and an abortion is what you want, then you definitely have to tell your parents, and they need to be with you.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is that not old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: Your boyfriend is not your parent, and the abortion is for you. So that’s a whole different issue on its own, you being 14 and him being 22. I mean, that’s a totally separate issue. But he is not your parent.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I just have a lot of questions and I’m really confused. Could I call you back if I thought of anything else to ask? What was your name?

CLINIC: Not if you came up for the pregnancy test. The only thing is, we couldn’t do the surgery without getting your parents consent, and wouldn’t call them and tell them. You know, and tell — I mean, we wouldn’t call them and tell them. We just couldn’t do the surgery unless they were, they signed the consent form.

CLINIC: But you can come in for a pregnancy test and to talk to us and stuff without your parents’ knowledge.

CALLER: Do you think like anybody else could do it without my parents knowing?

CLINIC: Nobody in Oregon can.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I mean, it’s Oregon state law.

CLINIC: So. But —

CALLER: Well, what about California?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not sure. I don’t — you know. That would be something you’d have to call someplace there and find out what their state law says.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, the thing is like — I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We actually don’t tell anybody. I would probably call one of those two places and see what their guidelines are for how old you need to be. But your boyfriend’s not your guardian, and especially since he is older and you’re that much younger it’s mandatory to report that by state law if he was to be your guardian because technically that’s statutory rape.

CALLER: But what do you mean? I mean, he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I know. I’m not saying it’s wrong, but I’m just saying by law because you’re so young and he’s over — especially over 18. He’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: If you report that to them, then it’s mandatory for them to report that because technically by law that is statutory rape. So I don’t think that that would work as far as him being your guardian to sign for you.

CALLER: Oh. So what should I do then?

CLINIC: Well, that I don’t know, but I think probably the best thing not to do would be to tell them — I mean, unless you’re wanting to get into something legal as far as from the state for statutory rape from him.

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Yeah. I wouldn’t tell them that then. I would probably just call and see if there has to be an age limit, and if so does it have to be your guardian who signs for you or can somebody else sign for you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But if somebody else can sign for you, don’t let it be your 22-year-old boyfriend.

CLINIC: Okay? (laughs) Just a word to the wise.

CALLER: Well, okay. Well, the thing — the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 26, and I’m just really scared.

CALLER: Well, I mean, like to get the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: For him? No. We have a funding program that your services would be free, so you don’t have to worry about cost.

CLINIC: You know, unless you tell somebody in the room when they call you back for your pregnancy test, I don’t want to be with him, then that’s the only way we would report it. But abortion, that’s a different story.

CLINIC: Not tonight, no. We’d need to set up an appointment, but we could get it for you pretty soon.

CLINIC: Okay. So what you would want to do is come in and have the pregnancy test with us.

CLINIC: It is completely confidential. I am going to suggest to you that you do not say when you come how old your boyfriend is.

CLINIC: You don’t have him come with you because we would have to report that.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Why? Because it’s illegal.

CALLER: Oh. Well —

CLINIC: For him to be having sexual relationship with you. It’s illegal.

CALLER: But if he doesn’t come in you don’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: Do not say to anyone here how old your boyfriend is.

CLINIC: So come in and have a pregnancy test, and if it’s positive then we will talk to you about what your options are, and we’ll give you information, you know, whatever information you might need.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if it wasn’t positive? Could I get birth control?

CALLER: I just don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Yeah. You know, I think you’re very wise.

CALLER: Well, it’s just — the thing is, I can’t drive. I don’t know how I would get there to pick up the birth control, or whatever.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Well, like for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. It’s your signature.

CALLER: Well, how soon would you be able to tell me if I was pregnant or not?

CLINIC: When you come in and do the urine test.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control?

CLINIC: We need to set up an appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, well, how long does it take for that?

CLINIC: We could get you in tomorrow morning for an appointment for that.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just, I don’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, I just have a lot of questions. I can’t really think of right now. Could I call you back if I thought up something? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Tammy, but you need to talk to a counselor. The only thing I could suggest to do is probably to come in and take a pregnancy test. They can go over your questions, and then they can if you’re not, set you up with an appointment to get you started on birth control.

CALLER: Oh. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Well, if I had to get an abortion, would I have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I don’t know. You’d have to talk to them down there.
