CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. What we can do for you here is, we can do pregnancy tests to confirm that you are pregnant if you just did one at home or something. We can do that. The counselor would talk to you about your options. Options sometimes depend on how far along you are, where you travel to, what kind of anesthesia you need, things like that. There’s a lot of things to talk about. We can do the examination that you would need before the termination, and we can also do the examination afterward. We just don’t do the actual abortion here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, where would I go for an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, because of the things like I talked about — you know, depending on far along, what kind of anesthesia, things like that, the counselor would talk to you about all of that. It really depends on a lot of different things. Our Schenectady center is one of the places that we refer to. But we also — there’s also other places that we refer to too.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, so I could come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay, it’s just —

CLINIC: That’s really the first step. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to — like I’m just scared because like I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: But my friend said that since like, since I’m so young that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend is 22. Is he old enough to take care of all that and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Um. You can come here without your parents knowing anyway. So it doesn’t matter with the boyfriend. But — so you could still come here anyway.

CALLER: Well, do you know if I could get an abortion without my parents knowing?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes, um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t know what they would do if they — they just — I mean, my boyfriend’s a real good guy, but my parents just don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me. But I don’t know, I don’t understand that. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. But I don’t know. And they just can’t find out because I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But — so you’re sure that they wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Right. What we could do — I mean, the next opening I have for a pregnancy test, we could have you come in tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see when he can take me.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you want to do that then? Because we do set up appointments. Do you want to do that then, give him a call?

CALLER: Yeah. But do you know like how much it costs to get an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, there’s so many things. There’s a lot of things for her to talk to you about. She would go over all of that with you. The pregnancy test — all we would be doing tomorrow if you want to take the 9:00 appointment would be a pregnancy test. And that’s not very expensive. So if, you know, there’s other things for her to talk to you about. You might qualify for Medicaid if you don’t want your parents to know. There’s other things to talk about too. So.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there? It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Right. We do, but you wouldn’t be down for an appointment for that. If we had time, we could — see, we have separate appointments. The pregnancy test counselor, the pregnancy counselor has her own schedule and also the clinic has their schedule. If we have time then we could set you up with birth control with the clinic, but i don’t know that they would have time tomorrow morning. It looks pretty busy.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know, they wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Oh, no. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my boyfriend says that it’s important that nobody finds out about us. So. I can’t let anyone know that, that we’re — I can’t let anyone know what’s going on. So. I just — he just doesn’t want me to get in trouble or anything. So. I’m just really worried about everything.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But — so let me call him and see when is a good time for him to take me.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Teresa.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.
