TAPE – 755

(Dialing, phone ringing 4x)

RECORDING: You have reached Medical Goldman’s (?) Clinic. All of our lines are busy, and we ask that you remain on the line. Your call will be answered when the next operator becomes available. Our telephone hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

CLINIC: (Unclear) Clinic. Can you please hold?

CALLER: Yeah, okay.

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. This is Adrienne. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are. Do you know when the first day of your last period was?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: At our clinic, anything less than 12 weeks, which you are, is the same fee. And that’s $535.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we schedule those appointments Monday through Friday in the early morning.

CALLER: In the early morning?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. What time?

CLINIC: Usually 6:45 a.m. to about 8:15 a.m.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And you’ll be at the clinic about four hours during the day.

CALLER: Oh, okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Unfortunately, if you’re only 14, we do still have to notify both of your biological parents.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: It’s just a state law in Minnesota. Have you told your parents yet?

CALLER: Well, no. They know my boyfriend, and they know we’re going out, but they don’t know we’re having sex. If they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: There is an option of going to court and having a court grant you permission to have the abortion without telling your parents. If you’d like, I could give you that phone number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 612-348-6824. And you need to set up the court appointment. And then once you have the court appointment set up, then you can get the abortion appointment set up also.

CALLER: Okay. How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Court is free.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Then you would just have to pay for the cost of the abortion.

CALLER: Well, does the judge ever say no or anything?

CLINIC: Not usually. The judge is usually good. And it’s an easy process.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign any forms if he was paying for everything?

CLINIC: No. But if he came to the clinic, we would have to get a copy of his picture i.d.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would it be better if he didn’t come to the clinic then?

CLINIC: It’s up to you.

CALLER: Well, would it be bad if like —

CLINIC: Can I put you on hold?

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Thanks for holding. I had another call coming in. It’s really up to you whether or not you wanted to bring him.

CALLER: Well, I would just really feel better if he was there with me. But if had his picture on file, would that be — would anybody tell? Would anybody find out about him?

CLINIC: You know, that’s just for our records. All of your records at our clinic are confidential.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about him or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: The thing is, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. I just haven’t had my period in a while. Do you guys do the pregnancy test there?

CLINIC: We offer a free pregnancy test Monday through Friday between 8:00 and 2:00. You can just stop in, and as long as you have a picture i.d. we can do that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t have a picture i.d.

CLINIC: Then you might want to try one of the other clinics. Or do you have like a school i.d.?

CALLER: Well, no. I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Okay. Otherwise you could try just buying a home pregnancy test. Those are also accurate, just like an EPT or anything.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come there for birth control?

CLINIC: That would be something you would want to see like a Planned Parenthood for. We actually at this clinic just do abortions. And at the time of the abortion we can give you birth control, but we don’t see patients only for birth control.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, that’s something you wouldn’t have to tell your parents about.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hm.

CALLER: All right. So when do you normally do the pregnancy tests again?

CLINIC: Monday through Friday between 8 in the morning and 2 p.m.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Do I need an appointment for that?

CLINIC: Nope. You can just walk in.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Dr. Hanson’s (sp) office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do, um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are. Do you know when your last period was?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. And was that a normal period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Hold on second. I misplaced my little thing here that tells me.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. The cost on a weekday would be 360, and a Saturday would be 400. And then do you have positive or negative blood?

CALLER: I’m not sure.

CLINIC: Okay. We would do a test. If it’s negative, then you’d need to have a shot, and the shot would be $40.

CALLER: My main question is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. The Minnesota law says that if you aren’t going to tell your parents, and they’re aren’t going to be able to write a note, that you have to go to court. And the court will decide whether you’re mature enough to make the decision on your own without telling your parents.

CALLER: Okay. How do I do that?

CLINIC: Well, I can give you the court — where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Savage.

CLINIC: I can give you the court number. It’s 612-348-6824.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And what happens is you have to come to our office first. And then you’ll have an ultra sound done, and you’ll talk to a counselor. She’ll fill out some papers, and you’ll take those to the court. And then you’ll talk to the judge at 10:30. And then when you’re done, you can either come back here or you can come a different day. On Tuesdays everything can be done in one day. If you don’t want to go to court on a Tuesday — they have Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. If you did court on a Wednesday or Friday, you’d have to come a different day.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does the judge ever say no or anything?

CLINIC: Well, the judge did say no one time, but that was because the person really didn’t want to have the procedure done. Otherwise, no, they haven’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And your boyfriend probably will not be able to go into the courthouse, courtroom, with you. They have what’s called a guardian, someone that stands up for you and talks through you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you have to decide when you want to come. And usually Tuesdays are the best because everything is done in one day.

CALLER: So it would be better to come next Tuesday then?

CLINIC: If you want to sure, um-hmm.

CALLER: We do an ultra sound. When you come in, we’ll have you fill out the papers. Then you’ll have the ultra sound and talk with a counselor, and then you’ll go to court. Then you’ll come back, and the procedure’s done once you come back.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Do you guys do a pregnancy test beforehand? It’s just I haven’t had one of those yet.

CLINIC: No. We’ll do the ultra sound.

CALLER: Oh, okay?

CLINIC: The only time we’ll do a pregnancy test is if there’s something that doesn’t show up on the ultra sound.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth there?

CLINIC: We do, um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I got to call my boyfriend and see if he can get Tuesday off. But can I call you back when I talk to him? What was your name?

CLINIC: Carey (sp).

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to do that? Like I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: Yeah. You can — probably screening, they’ll tell you what tao do. I think there is some way to go around this, but you need to ask them. I don’t know exactly.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like if I could come there for like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can come in here for a pregnancy test. That will be all right.

CALLER: They wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was there for that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. If like the pregnancy test was negative, do they — do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: You can, yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But do you know you are pregnant?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the 2nd week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah, why don’t you come in and get a pregnancy test? Tomorrow we’re going to be open from 12 until 6:30.

CALLER: Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me because he said he was going to take care of everything?

CLINIC: He can. He can. It will be $10 for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Once we know if you’re not pregnant, we can set up the appointment for to put you on birth control.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody has to know about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you guys wouldn’t say that I was on —

CLINIC: We won’t tell anybody unless you want us to tell somebody, but if you don’t want us to tell anybody we won’t tell absolutely nobody. It’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sessach (Sessot?). (Male Rep)

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Why don’t you just come and get a pregnancy test so you will know if you’re pregnant or you’re not?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD

TAPE – 248 (Minnesota)

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Brooklyn Park Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not at this particular clinic. We have a clinic in St. Paul that does.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have that phone number?

CLINIC: We sure do. It’s 651-698-2406.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And they are closed right now. I believe they close at 4, but if you want they have a voice, they have an answering service, and they can tell you their hours and also like they have explanations of anything if you want to just like call and like listen.

CALLER: Well, I just had a question.

CLINIC: I might be able to help you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to know about it, but can they just have my boyfriend sign? He’s 22.

CLINIC: No. What the state of Minnesota requires that, your both parents have to have a consent. If that’s not something then you want, then you have to go through, it’s called a court, it’s a court proceeding, a judge can overrule that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can make an appointment to talk to a counselor there, and then she will tell you everything that you need to do and give you like the form that you need the judge to sign.

CALLER: Do I need to get like a lawyer?

CLINIC: No. Oh, no, no, no. Not at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No. You just go to the court and you state your reasons why you want, why you don’t want your parents to know, that kind of thing, and they just sign a form for you, and then you can go ahead.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: I’m not sure of the cost is anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you have to set up an appointment.

CALLER: Does the judge ever say no?

CLINIC: Not too often.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Some of the reasons that they would not, that they would not overturn that is like if they didn’t feel that you were able to handle it by yourself or if they didn’t feel that you were mature to go through it.

CALLER: But my boyfriend would take care of everything, he said.

CLINIC: Well, he doesn’t help you really emotionally if they feel — that kind of thing. He has nothing to do with it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: As far as going through this, the whole procedure with the court and that kind of thing.

CALLER: So I Just shouldn’t tell them at all that he would help, or —

CLINIC: Oh, no. That’s a good thing. I mean, you need to have — it’s good to have someone, you know, with you and supporting you. I’m just saying that it’s up to the judge, but most of the times they do overturn it if you can give a, you know, a pretty sound reason as to why you don’t want your parents to know or be involved in the situation.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just, like my friend said that I would be in trouble because my boyfriend’s 22. Is that true, or —

CLINIC: Um. You know, honestly, I — I mean, if it’s consensual, I, it wouldn’t. As far as I know it wouldn’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But I can’t give you a really direct answer on that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Someone there could.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you guys do like pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Oh, of course. Yep.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody that I was getting a pregnancy test or anything?

CLINIC: Not at all. No, it’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Because I don’t know how else I would get there.

CLINIC: Have you taken a positive pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, I took a home pregnancy test over the weekend, but I wasn’t sure if I did it right.

CLINIC: Okay. And did it come back positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Because they’re pretty accurate if they come back positive.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it’s up to you if you want to pay. It’s $13.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it’s up to you if you want to do it again, but a home pregnancy test that comes back positive, they are pretty accurate.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant, like if the one you guys do came out negative, do you have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Oh, no.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, but we’d require you to have an annual exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: To get on birth control, but everything is confidential.

CALLER: Is it okay if I talk to my boyfriend and then call you back if he had any questions?

CLINIC: Sure. That’s no problem. And if you wanted to come in for a pregnancy test, we are open until 6:30 today.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Jennifer.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.
