CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, ma’am, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of anyone that does?

CLINIC: Are you pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Would you like to come in and have a pregnancy test and let us discuss all the options that you may have with you?

CALLER: Yeah. I guess.

CLINIC: Okay. You don’t have to have an appointment, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: You just come in, be here before 6:00 today. The test is $22. And then if it’s positive we’ll tell you all the options you have and where you can obtain all those options, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you need a cheaper test, it’s based on your income downtown at the other clinic.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, my friend said that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents, but —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — is it all right if like my boyfriend does it because he’s like 22?

CLINIC: We won’t tell you anything. We won’t — your boyfriend is how old?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: And how old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Do your parents know that you’re seeing him?

CALLER: Well, they don’t like him, but they know.

CLINIC: Yeah. You need to let us come in here and talk to you, okay?

CALLER: All right. How come?

CLINIC: Well, you’re kind of young to be having sex like that and not using something to keep from getting pregnant, okay?

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Why don’t you come in and let us do a pregnancy test and talk, okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, do you guys have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: Just so you’re here before 6:00 today, okay?

CALLER: Well, okay. I have to call and see when he can — like what time he gets off work and if we can get there.

CLINIC: Okay, and we’re here tomorrow half a day.

CALLER: Okay. But is it all right if he brings me?

CLINIC: Yes, it’s all right.

CALLER: And you guys won’t have to say anything or anything?

CLINIC: Won’t have to say anything? What do you mean?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Is it all right if — like they won’t have to tell my parents that I’m there?

CLINIC: No, we will not.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, like say that like after the pregnancy test if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do have birth control here.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hold on just a moment, okay, honey?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: (pause) Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Does anybody at all know you’re dating this man?

CALLER: Yeah. Like my parents know we’re going out. They just really don’t like him at all.

CLINIC: Your parents know you’re going out with him?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And he’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh. Like he used to work with my dad, so.

CLINIC: He used to work with your dad?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And they know you’re dating?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, I mean, as far as for your parents, we don’t have to contact your parents.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you have to contact anyone else?

CLINIC: Well, I’ll be honest with you. By law because you are 13 years old, we should. Now we’ve never reported anybody, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But I would like for you to come in and let us talk to you.

CALLER: Well, would he get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: Well, no, but you know, we really do need to talk. We just want to talk to you, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: We won’t get you in trouble or anything. But we really would like to talk to you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Can you come in and let us talk to you?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to him and see when he can drive me, but —

CLINIC: Okay, and have you missed a period?

CALLER: Well, yeah. Like my last period was like the 2nd week in December, so.

CLINIC: In December?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Have your periods been normal up to that point?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You really need to come in and let us talk to you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. You call me back when you know when you can come.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if I could get an abortion without my parents or anybody finding out?

CLINIC: No, you have – because of your age, you have to have your parents consent for an abortion.

CALLER: But I can’t tell them at all. They can’t find out. Like I would get in big trouble.

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: I would get in big trouble.

CLINIC: But they know that you’re dating him, right?

CALLER: Yeah, but they don’t know that we’re having sex. I mean, they would be furious.

CLINIC: Well, why don’t you come in and talk to us, and then we’ll go from there, okay? It’s easier for us to talk to you face to face, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Than, you know — and I’ll check around and see what we can do about that, but here in the state of Kentucky you have to have your parents’ consent to have an abortion.

CALLER: And there’s nothing I can do? I mean, I can’t tell them. There’s nothing else I could do?

CLINIC: No, sweetheart, there’s not, and don’t you think those things, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know, there’s nothing — in the state of Kentucky you have to tell your parents because you can’t go to an abortion clinic and have an abortion without that. But you need to come in and let us talk to you, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Phyllis.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Will you come in so we can talk to you?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see, but, yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay.
