CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that does?

CLINIC: Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you think you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I think so. I missed my period. The last time I had my period was December 14th.

CLINIC: Okay. You really need to confirm a positive pregnancy test. You can come here. We can do that for $5. You can do a home one. If it’s positive, come in. We can give you lots of information.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever that is?

CLINIC: (Pause) Now what?

CALLER: Well, my friend said that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he sign whatever that is?

CLINIC: No. You have to have parental consent. But you really need not to worry about all that until you definitely confirm that you are pregnant.

CALLER: Okay. So I don’t have to be a specific age to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Is it all right if he brings me? Because that’s the only way I’d be able to get there.

CLINIC: I don’t care who brings you. Do you know where we’re at?

CALLER: Well, he knows.

CLINIC: He does?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Now, we’ve moved.

CALLER: Yeah. That’s what he said, so I think he knows.

CLINIC: But you need to confirm a positive pregnancy test before you worry about all that other stuff.

CALLER: Okay. So you guys wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anybody that I was there?

CLINIC: You’re how old?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: If you’re 13 and pregnant, we do have to report to Child Protection.

CALLER: But why? What do you mean? Why do you have to tell them?

CLINIC: There are state regulations that say —

CALLER: Nobody can find out. I don’t understand what you mean.

CLINIC: Well, there are state regulations we have to follow, okay?

CALLER: So you have to tell that I was there?

CLINIC: We don’t tell your parents; we tell Child Protection. And Child Protection takes care of it thereafter.

CALLER: But would they tell my parents?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: Would they tell my parents?

CLINIC: Probably.

CALLER: So if you tell the child protective people, then they would tell my parents?

CLINIC: Okay. You’re worried about stuff you don’t need to worry about yet. You need to confirm a pregnancy test.

CALLER: But if I come in for a pregnancy test you said that you would have to tell the child protective people.

CLINIC: Right. State regulations say, sexually active 13 — or 13-year-olds who are pregnant have to be reported. We have to follow regulations.

CALLER: Well, so what could I do then?

CLINIC: Okay. I’m not sure what you’re wanting from me.

CALLER: Well, I want to be taken care of and not have my parents find out. Because if they found out I don’t know what would happen. They just can’t find out.

CLINIC: Okay. If you’re pregnant, they’re probably going to find out.

CALLER: But they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Okay. What specifically do you want from me?

CALLER: Well, I just don’t want to be pregnant.

CLINIC: Okay. First of all you need to have a positive pregnancy test and know for sure you are pregnant.

CALLER: But if I come in there to get a pregnancy test, you guys would have to tell people that will tell my parents, right?

CLINIC: We have to tell Child Protection. Whether or not they talk to your parents is up to them. If they feel there’s sexual abuse going on, they’re probably going to talk to your parents.

CALLER: But me and my boyfriend are in love. We’re not —

CLINIC: I cannot change regulations.

CALLER: Well, then where can I go to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can go here. They have like birth right centers. You can go to the drug store and buy them over the counter. But before you worry about all this stuff, you need to have a positive pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I went to the drug store, are the ones there accurate?

CLINIC: Talk to your pharmacist and ask them which one they recommend.

CALLER: But what if I wasn’t pregnant, could I come there and get birth control?

CLINIC: Well, if you run that test and you’re not pregnant, call us back, and then we can talk to you, set you up an appointment and tell you what we can do.

CALLER: But if I was on birth control from there, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was?

CLINIC: Depends on your age. After a certain age we don’t have to report it. But under certain ages we do have to report it.

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Well, then come see us in March.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody then though?

CLINIC: Not if you’re 14.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Okay. You’ve been so nice. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Just call back, and we’ll answer any questions you have.

CALLER: Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: I don’t usually give that out because we never know who you’re going to talk to when you call. I might be off that day. But just call back anytime you need to.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
