WOMEN’S PAVILION

TAPE – 825

(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Women’s Pavillion.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Well, we offer two different kinds. Which kind were you interested in?

CALLER: I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: We have the surgery. We go up to 12 weeks with that. It’s $470. You might take 70 of that home if you don’t need a shot of Rhogam or a blood pregnancy test. And then we also have the French abortion pill, which is 600. And you can’t be more than 60 days from the first day of your last normal period with that.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far you are?

CLINIC: Well, you’ve got to know when the first day of your last menstrual period was.

CALLER: January 10th.

CLINIC: January 10th?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Well, you should be okay with that. Do you live in the area?

CALLER: Well, I got this number from a number person that I called, and they told me to call you guys.

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: But I’m in Indianapolis.

CLINIC: You’re in Indianapolis?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You’re too far, honey. Because it would mean three trips back here.

(Talking to someone else) Are we letting them come from Indie?

Nope. You’re too far, hon.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would bring me and pay for everything.

CLINIC: No, I know that. But you have to make three trips back here.

(Someone talking in the background)

CLINIC: She said you’re too far in the pregnancy. You’re more than the 60 days from the first day of your last normal period.

CALLER: So I couldn’t do the surgical one.

CLINIC: No, that’s what she said. No, you can do the surgical one; you can’t do the chemical one.

CALLER: Okay. So how much does it cost for the surgical one?

CLINIC: 470.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Are you interested in doing that?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Just a minute, please.

(Talking to someone else) Hi.

CALLER: Hello?

CLINIC: Yes?

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I’m talking to someone, and then I’m trying to talk to you too.

So it was January 10th. Do you want to make an appointment right now?

CALLER: Well, I need to call my boyfriend to see. But the thing is, my main concern is I’m going to be 14 later on this month —

CLINIC: Oh, honey. If you’re 14, you need a parental consent.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, you can go to Illinois, and you don’t need parental consent. But in Indiana, you have to have a parent’s consent.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, no, no. We’re not going to break the law, honey.

CALLER: Well, like if I went to the other —

CLINIC: No. You can go to Illinois where it’s not against the law.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody in Illinois?

CLINIC: In Illinois it isn’t against the law. Let me give you the number. It’s called Family Planning Associates, 1-800-541-0356.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Call them. And you don’t need to have your parents sign when you go there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test just to make sure though?

CLINIC: Oh, you can go for a pregnancy test anywhere, honey. You don’t have to drive all the way from Indie to here. Just go to the drug store and buy one.

CALLER: Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Or you can go to — they have like those crisis pregnancy places where usually you can get them for free. Just look them up in the phone book.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And once you find out what the results are, you can take it from there.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Why would you want to drive all this way? Just go to Planned Parenthood, honey.

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend said to go there.

CLINIC: No. Go to Planned Parenthood. You’re going to be driving two-and-a-half hours to get birth control? All you have to do is look up in the phone book to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: But would anybody have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Your parents don’t need to know for birth control.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So there’s no sense in you driving all this way.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything. But if he was paying, would he have to fill out any forms or have his name on anything? Like we don’t want anybody to know about us.

CLINIC: Well, I’ll tell you right now, he’s breaking the law. You know that.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: He’s breaking the law.

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because you’re under age, honey, and he’s 22.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That’s considered rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I know, honey. But they call it statutory rape. So I would not tell anybody that. You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But call Planned Parenthood. They can help you with birth control. You don’t need to drive five hours to get birth control.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Just look in the phone book under Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: I wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you.

CLINIC: Yeah. I wish you could too, honey.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Judy.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay, honey.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Fort Wayne Women’s Health.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: That is one service that we do, yes.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Our fee is $450.

CALLER: I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: No, you would need your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Is there any way not to — what if you couldn’t tell your parents?

CLINIC: Is there some reason why you can’t tell your parents?

CALLER: They’d be furious. I mean, I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: And they would be furious?

CALLER: Yeah. I don’t know what they would do, but they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: There is such a thing as a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. What is that?

CLINIC: That is where you go in front of a judge and explain to him why you can’t tell your parents. And it needs to be a good reason, not I’m uncomfortable talking about it. And quite frankly, a boyfriend of a woman your age, the judge will probably prosecute him.

CALLER: Why? What do you mean?

CLINIC: You’re a minor and he’s what, 20?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Well, what do you mean? I don’t understand.

CLINIC: It’s totally illegal for him to have sexual relations with you.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re 14.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what shall I do then?

CLINIC: Go to your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t tell them.

CLINIC: You have to go to your parents.

CALLER: But they don’t ever listen to me. I mean, they never understand anything.

CLINIC: And I would be hard-pressed to understand while my 14-year-old daughter was having sex with a 22-year-old man.

CALLER: Well, they know we’re going out. I mean, he works with my dad. But they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: They’re going to have you or you’re going to have to lie and tell them that it was somebody else.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test without my parents having to know, just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: When was your last period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: And that was a normal period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: The test is $10.

CALLER: Okay. When do you normally do those?

CLINIC: Before 4:30

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: I can see you today before 4:30.

CALLER: Well, could my boyfriend bring me? That’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: He can bring you, but please don’t bring him inside the building.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You could make an appointment and go to Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But would they have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control?

CLINIC: You would have to take that up with them.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. All right. How late are you there until today?

CLINIC: I can see you before 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. Are you there tomorrow?

CLINIC: Yes, between 9:30 and 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Helen (?).

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Merrillville. How may I direct your call?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was trying to ask some questions about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. What you need?

CALLER: Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. How much does it cost?

CLINIC: $350. We do them a minimum of six weeks, the maximum of 13.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: You get an ultra sound done the day of the procedure.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had my period since January 3rd. Do you think that’s within the time period?

CLINIC: Yeah, definitely. We take Visa, Master Card, cash and check. We do them on Mondays and Wednesdays only.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m really worried about — I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m 13. I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: You have to have a parent with you.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Indiana state law is that your mom and dad have to be here. Actually, we’ll have to report you to the state anyway because of your age.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re under 14.

CALLER: But I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter. How old is your boyfriend? He’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. We’ll have to report it.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: They’ll just — I don’t know. I can’t tell you. That’s out of our hands. It’s against the law to be with someone that age.

CALLER: Well, if I was 14 would you have to report it?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what if I didn’t tell you?

CLINIC: We have to have i.d. with you.

CALLER: What can I do?

CLINIC: You would have to have a parent or guardian come with you.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents at all. They can’t find out. They’d be furious.

CLINIC: Well, that’s your option. Your other option is to go to the court, and you’d have to call a judge. And you’d have to tell a judge why you can’t tell your parent, and they would have to give you something legally stating that you don’t need a parent here. But once they find out your boyfriend’s 22, he probably would go to jail anyway.

CALLER: He would go to jail?

CLINIC: Yes. That’s against the law.

CALLER: But he can’t go to jail. I mean, he’s the only one that’s ever here for me. If he wasn’t here — he can’t go to jail.

CLINIC: Well, then you’re best off just letting your parents know rather than the court.

CALLER: Well, what if I didn’t tell the court about him.

CLINIC: They would want to know who got you pregnant.

CALLER: Well, if he wasn’t 22, would it be different?

CLINIC: Probably.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So what age is it okay?

CLINIC: Eighteen in Indiana.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, I can give you the number to Illinois. They might have different rules.

CALLER: You think so?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: 312-266-1033.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to come in there and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t tell anybody. But if your test is positive though, we probably would have to report that.

CALLER: Oh. Well, okay.

CLINIC: That’s anywhere you go though.

CALLER: When do you do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: How far are you from here?

CALLER: I’m at my friend’s house, and she’s in Maryville where you’re at.

CLINIC: Does she have a car?

CALLER: Well, no. But my boyfriend can bring me.

CLINIC: Can you be here in 20 minutes?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. He has to get off work and come get me. But I don’t think we can get there in 20 minutes.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you come in any time Monday between 8:30 and 5.

CALLER: Okay. And you’re sure nobody would have to know if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Hold on one second, okay? I’m going to find out.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Ma’am, if your test is positive, we would have to report you to the state.

CALLER: Well, if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: No, then we wouldn’t. Our job is to take care of you. We don’t want you to get pregnant. But if you are pregnant, we have to report you to the state.

CALLER: So you wouldn’t tell on my boyfriend if I was getting birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore, so we wanted to get birth control. I don’t drive yet. Could I have my boyfriend pick up the birth control pills?

CLINIC: Well, first we want to make sure if you’re pregnant or not, so we’ll do it one step at a time, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ll see you Monday between 8:30 and 5.

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Kara (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: But they can’t find out.

CLINIC: How else they’re not going to find out?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: No. They’ll find out because you are 13 and a very, very young minor, okay? And there’s a possibility that they will prosecute your boyfriend.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because he’s 22.

CALLER: Well, they know him. I mean, he works with my dad. They know we’re going out. They just don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they knew about that, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.

CALLER: My parents would have to know if I was on birth control too?

CLINIC: You’ll have to talk to Planned Parenthood about that. So if you find out that you’re not pregnant, then you want to get birth control pills, you’ve got to go through Planned Parenthood. We don’t do that.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CALLER: OH. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though and see?

CLINIC: Have you not already had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You can walk in for a pregnancy test, yes.

CALLER: Well, would it be all right if my boyfriend was there with me? I would just feel better that way.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: But we were talking about everything, and we didn’t want anyone to know about us. Would you guys have to have him sign anything? He said he was going to pay for everything, but would he have to sign for something?

CLINIC: If you’re just getting a pregnancy test, you can just come in and do that. You don’t need to have a consent or anything like that. But as far as the termination goes, you would need to contact the clinic at the number I had given you and they’d be able to help you with that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. We have birth control.

CALLER: Oh. Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Have you already had a pelvic exam somewhere?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Never? Have you ever had one?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on for a second. (pause) Okay, thank you for holding. If your tests came back that you were not pregnant, then you’d have to have a parent or guardian sign for you to start on some birth control.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: You would have to go ahead with your exam.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. So all right then.

CLINIC: So did you want to come in for the pregnancy test? You know you can walk in for that, and we’re open until 5:00. You’d have to be here at least by 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I call my boyfriend and see if he had any questions and call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: That’s fine. You can talk with anybody at the clinic actually.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Are they as nice as you though?

CLINIC: Yeah, pretty much anybody here can help you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Martinsville Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: In this clinic, no.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: There’s a clinic in Bloomington and one in Indianapolis.

CALLER: Do you have the Bloomington phone number?

CLINIC: 1-800-828-7525.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really scared because my last period was December 14th. And I don’t know if I am pregnant, but I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: So your last period was when, honey?

CALLER: December 14th.

CLINIC: December 14th. Okay. What do you mean by you don’t know what to do?

CALLER: Well, I’m just scared.

CLINIC: You’re scared?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test anywhere?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. We do pregnancy tests on a walk-in basis. What you need to do is you need to get a pregnancy test first, because there may be something else going on.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You never know. Or it could be that you’re pregnant. But you need to find out if you’re pregnant how far along you are, because that can make a big difference.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Is he old enough to take care of that, and you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’re 13?

CALLER: How be 14 in March, yeah.

CLINIC: No. Because of your age it has to be a parent that’s when you.

CALLER: But my parents can’t find out at all. I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: Well, I understand that. But what you have to realize, in the state of Indiana at the age of 13 if you’re having sex, that is considered sexual abuse.

CALLER: But he’s not abusing me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: But what you don’t understand is this, in the state of Indiana it’s against the law.

CALLER: Well, what can I do then?

CLINIC: The one thing that you need to do is you need to be able to talk to your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t. They don’t ever understand anything.

CLINIC: I understand that. You might come in here and talk to my nurse practitioner in here and see, but —

CALLER: What’s her name?

CLINIC: Her name is Christy. In the state of Indiana it’s against the law for anyone to have an abortion under the age of 18 without a parent with them.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Under the age of 18.

CALLER: Well, could I go anywhere else?

CLINIC: I couldn’t tell you. I couldn’t tell you about other state laws. I don’t know.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If I did know, I couldn’t tell you that anyway. I’m not allowed to talk about other state laws as far as abortion’s concerned. I can only talk about the Indiana state laws. But in the state of Indiana, under the age of 14 if you have sex with anybody, even if that person is 14 years of age and you’re 13, that is considered sexual abuse, sexual assault on a minor. Even though it’s consensual, it’s still considered abuse. It’s against the law.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: They could go to jail.

CALLER: Well, he can’t go to jail.

CLINIC: I’m just telling you that. I’m just letting you know that, okay? And if you’re talking about getting an abortion, the farthest along you can be is 12 weeks, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you had a period — when did you say your last period was?

CALLER: December 14th.

CLINIC: That was the first day?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me figure this up real fast. The first day of last period is December 14th, and today is January 20th. So that would make you, if you’re pregnant, around 10 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But the whole thing is, he can’t go with you. Your parents have to show a drivers license, some form of i.d. stating who they are.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could he be there with me for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: I don’t advise that, number one, because if the nurse practitioner knows that he is over the age of 16, she’s binded by law — or over the age of 14, she’s binded by law to report to the Welfare Department.

CALLER: So if he came in, you guys would have to get him arrested?

CLINIC: Well, we would have to report it to the Child Protected Services if he was here with you.

CALLER: Well, what should I do? He’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: I’d just have him drop you off and come in and do the test, and then pick you back up.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But to be honest with you, you’re going to have to one way or another tell your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t.

CLINIC: I understand that, that you feel like you can’t. But the whole thing is this. There is on clinic that’s going to perform anything you without one of your parents with you. It’s against the law for them to. So you’re going to have to either have a mother or a father with you. You can’t have a boyfriend, because they have to prove they’re your parents. And because of your age, they definitely have to be there because of how old you are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: He’s 22 years old, and you’re 13. So he’s almost 10 years older than you, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. There’s a big age difference there. I would talk to my parents because that’s the only people that’s going to be able to help you, as far as being able if you are pregnant getting an abortion. Because he can’t. And if he tries to take you anywhere, then they can get him for all kinds of stuff. I mean, he can be arrested and thrown in jail for a long time. And that’s state law. If he tried to take you somewhere and get an abortion, that’s another form of abuse, like a sexual predator. You need to talk to your parents.

CALLER: All right. You’re so nice. I wish I could talk to my mom like I talk to you.

CLINIC: Well, sometimes moms though when you’re a teenager you fight with them. The first thing you need to do is you need to get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So we’re here until 5:00 tonight and 5:00 tomorrow.

CALLER: Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Cindy.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bedford Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, not here at Bedford. Bloomington does. Would you like their number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 1-800-828-7525. And they can give you some more information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I get you to answer some questions?

CLINIC: I can try.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they have to tell my parents —

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: — and have them sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: No, because they’ll turn you both in.

CALLER: They’ll turn us in? Why? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because — you’re going to be 14?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If your partner is older than 14 or 15, it is against to law. If you’re 16 and your partner is 17 or 18, it’s against the law. If you’re under 18 and your partner is older than 18, it is against the law.

CALLER: What can I do? What would happen?

CLINIC: They would turn you in to Child Protective Services and they would turn him also, and possibly have him arrested. If your parents want him arrested, they could arrest him.

CALLER: So they would have to tell?

CLINIC: Yeah. Yeah, they have to tell, especially if you’re only 13.

CALLER: Well, is there any way that they don’t have to tell?

CLINIC: No, not at that age.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Not a whole lot. You probably have to tell your parents.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents. They would be furious.

CLINIC: I’m sure they would. Call up there and talk to them. They can give you some more information exactly on what you need to do and how maybe you can get around that. But most generally I’m pretty positive you’re going to have to tell your parents.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see?

CLINIC: You can, yeah.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell on us?

CLINIC: Don’t bring him with you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you bring him in, I’m going to have to turn you in.

CALLER: Okay. After the pregnancy test if I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. And you have to get an exam to do that. Have you missed a period?

CALLER: Well, yeah. My last period was the second week in December.

CLINIC: Come in for a pregnancy test and we can go from there.

CALLER: Okay. If I was on birth control, would you have tell anybody that I was?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When is your birthday?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: If you can wait until March when you turn 14 to come in and get birth control. At 13, yes, I believe I still need your parents’ consent for birth control. When you turn 14, I won’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But at 13, yeah, you do.

CALLER: So could I call you back and talk to you some more? What’s your name?

CLINIC: I’m Jerrie (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can call Bloomington and ask them some information on that also. But you’re not positive you’re pregnant, right?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: So that’s what you need to do. You need to come in for a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: You can come in today up until 5:30 or tomorrow between 9:30 and 4:30.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend has to drive me. Should I just leave him in the car?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t, but I can give you a number.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s 1-800-352-1901. And it’s called A Woman’s Choice, and it’s in Indianapolis.

CALLER: Okay. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that my parents have to sign some stuff. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he do that?

CLINIC: No. And you really probably shouldn’t tell that to them.

CALLER: Oh. What do you mean?

CLINIC: If you’re 13 years old and sexually active with a 22-year-old there’s laws against that.

CALLER: Like what?

CLINIC: It’s against the law. He could go to jail?

CALLER: He could go to jail?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: But it’s statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me.

CLINIC: Even if you’re consenting and you’re 13 years old, you’re not a legal adult in the state of Indiana, and it does not matter. So if you call the clinic to have a termination done, the only way that you can get that done in the state of Indiana is if your parents sign for that or you’re emancipated from the state. And you have to do that through a court in Indiana. And no judge will order emancipation if it’s just to get a termination done.

CALLER: Well, how would I do that then?

CLINIC: Do what?

CALLER: Could I go to the judge and be emancipated?

CLINIC: There’s like a three-month waiting period for that, and your parents have to sign your rights away.

CALLER: They do?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, what can I do then? Where could I go?

CLINIC: You can go out of state. There’s clinics out of state that will do terminations without parental consent.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Without parental consent, yes. But that’s out of state. And I believe you stay over 24 to 36 hours. The only other way is for your parents — and they have to show identification, like a drivers license with their picture on it that they are your parents. Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy to see?

CLINIC: You don’t even know if you’re pregnant or not?

CALLER: Well, I’m just scared because I missed my period.

CLINIC: Yeah. First before you start calling abortion clinics I would definitely verify that you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Well, could I come to you guys and get —

CLINIC: Sure. Sure. They’re $5, and we can do them any day that we’re open. We’re closed on Tuesdays.

CALLER: Well, what would I tell my parents? Would you guys have to say anything or anything?

CLINIC: We would not notify your parents. But I would tell you when you come in do not tell me that you’re 13 years old and having sex with a 22-year-old.

CALLER: Well, he has to bring me.

CLINIC: Tell me he’s your brother.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Because if you come into any Planned Parenthood and you’re under the age of 14 and sexually active, we have to turn you over to Child Protective Services anyway. But if you’re having sex with a 22-year-old and you’re under the age of 14, that has to be taken care of too. I mean, that’s statutory rape. It’s against the law. It’s illegal.

CALLER: Oh. But I could come in for a pregnancy test, and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Hang on just a second, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(Long pause)

CLINIC: Are you there, sweetie?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. If you come in to a Planned Parenthood facility under the age of 14, yes, we do have to contact Child Protective Services.

CALLER: So I couldn’t even come in for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: That’s completely up to you as to what you do. But if you come in here — and then of course once you’re contacted by CPS, they will contact your family.

CALLER: Well, how would you know my age?

CLINIC: Because you have to fill out a form with your birth date and age on it.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And then the situation is to that you’re telling me that you’re 13 and sexually active with a 22-year-old which that’s — like said, it has to be turned over. So yes, if you would come into a Planned Parenthood facility, yes, we would have to turn you over to Child Protection Services.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: I would assume to take a home pregnancy test if you didn’t want to go through all of that. But if the test is positive — I mean, if you’re wanting a termination done, it’s going to have to be done with parental consent.

CALLER: Well, are the home pregnancy tests usually accurate?

CLINIC: If you’re late for a period, yes. At 13 if you’re having sex anyway — other than with a 22-year-old — I would make him use a condom or protect myself from pregnancy. I mean, you’re obviously not wanting to be pregnant, and you’re afraid your parents are going to find out. I would get myself on a birth control method to protect yourself from that.

CALLER: But if I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: We would have to call Child Protective Services, yes. It sounds like it would be a thing that you maybe need to sit down and talk to your family.

CALLER: I can’t. I don’t know what they would do. I just can’t tell them. I’ll be 14 in March. Would that make any difference?

CLINIC: Probably not, not with this situation.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: I would do a home pregnancy test to verify first of all. And then you need to remember the situation — if that test is negative, you need to remember what you’re feeling right now. You need to do something to protect yourself, either abstain from intercourse. I mean, don’t have sex with him or get condoms, use condoms. Protect yourself the best as you can. It’s your body. You need to protect that.

CALLER: Okay. You’ve been so nice.

CLINIC: If you need anything, you let me know. But like I said, I would love to be able to help you in any way I can, but I have to follow the guidelines of Indiana state law, and that’s what I have to do. So if you have any questions or you need anything, you call be back and I’ll talk to you, absolutely.

CALLER: What’s your name?

CLINIC: Kim.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.
