CLINIC: Hello. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh, okay. That’s what I was calling about. Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. If you’re between 12 weeks and under, it’s $320 cash.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: You have to do a — what you do is you call, you make an appointment, and everything is done in one day if you’re 12 weeks and under. They do an ultra sound, they do pregnancy tests, they do everything.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my last period was January 3rd?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: So how do you know if you’re 12 weeks and under or not?

CLINIC: All it takes is if you’re pregnant (chuckle). Let me see.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. I just haven’t had my period in a long time, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: You haven’t had a period in a long time. Like how long?

CALLER: Well, since January 3rd.

CLINIC: January?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. Let me see.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents I was getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, no. There’s nothing to do — uh-uh, she’s wrong. Your friend is wrong, okay?

CALLER: All right. So you don’t have to tell my parents then?

CLINIC: No, no. In the state of California, the parents have no right. If you’re under age and you’re pregnant, and you want to have a termination or if you want to have the baby, it’s up to them. All right? That’s in the state of California. So your friend told you wrong that you’re suppose to tell your parents. No. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Let me see.

CALLER: The other thing was too, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this. And he said that he would pay for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for everything?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. I said no, uh-uh. Nobody. Okay? You’re about I would say nine weeks. So you’d better hurry up and make an appointment. Because if you’re over 12 weeks it’s a two-day procedure, and it’s more money, okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, when could I come in for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Why don’t you talk to your boyfriend and see what he’s going to do, okay, and if he’s going to pay for it.

CALLER: Well, he said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. What city are you in?

CALLER: I’m in Marino Valley.

CLINIC: Do you want to come in tomorrow? I can schedule you an appointment for tomorrow morning.

CALLER: Well, what time?

CLINIC: At 9:30?

CALLER: Okay. Would you do the pregnancy test first, and then go from there?

CLINIC: No, no. They do everything there, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I need your full name.

CALLER: Well, I need to call him and see if that’s a good time for him, and then call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Just call me back. I’ll be here, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Family Planning and Associates. Magda (sp) speaking. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: $370.

CALLER: 370?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: I’m just kind of scared. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Hold just a minute.

(Pause)

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 later on this month.

CLINIC: (Unclear)

CALLER: I can’t hear you. What?

CLINIC: You’re 13 now?

CALLER: Right, yeah. But I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: We’ll still have to report you to CPS.

CALLER: To who? I can’t hear you.

CLINIC: CPS.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because that’s the law.

CALLER: Well, why would you have to tell the law anything?

CLINIC: It’s not the law, it’s CPS.

CALLER: Well, why would you have to tell them anything?

CLINIC: (Unclear).

CALLER: Would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: They probably will.

CALLER: Well, they can’t tell my parents. I mean, is there anywhere else I could go?

CLINIC: Anywhere you go, because of the age that you are. You’re 13 and your boyfriend’s 22.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test without you guys telling?

CLINIC: Oh, you can come in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: But would you guys have to tell?

CLINIC: (Unclear).

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: I can barely hear you. Can you talk any later?

CLINIC: We won’t say anything. We won’t report you. But if you want to have an abortion with us, then we do have to report you to CPS.

CALLER: Oh. So I can get a pregnancy test just to make sure? I mean, I haven’t had one yet. I just haven’t had my period since like the 15th of January, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: You really need to come in and take a pregnancy test. We charge $10.

CALLER: Okay. If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: No. You would bring (unclear).

CALLER: Okay. But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You have to wait until you absolutely certain.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: You have to wait until you’re (unclear).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Sure. My name is Magda. And you can call me as many times as you want.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

(dialing sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Surgical Center. Sophia speaking. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Depending on how far along you are. Do you know the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: My last period was January 3.

CLINIC: Looks like you would be approximately about 8 weeks today. So the cost for that would be $600.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you’re less than 10 weeks the procedure is $600. If you’re over 10 weeks then it just depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

CALLER: Okay. I was just wondering — it’s just I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: You’re 13 and he’s 21?

CALLER: He’s 22.

CLINIC: 22? Okay, well, legally in California that’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: What do you mean? I mean, he’s not raping me or anything.

CLINIC: I understand —

CALLER: We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I understand that, but you know, the legal laws in California would consider that, even though if it is consensual.

CALLER: Well, what would happen?

CLINIC: That I’m not quite sure. You know, we wouldn’t — would probably have to do something with the police.

CALLER: The police?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Well, if they’re going to investigate this and then they might have to, you know, discuss it with your family members.

CALLER: Well, they can’t — well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Let me have you call the National Abortion Federation.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s 1-800-772-9100.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And you can tell them your situation and they can give you some resources.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could i come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: Sure. Hold on just a second, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(classical music)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. We can go ahead and see you for the pregnancy test, but if it does come out positive then we are going to have to file a report.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it came out negative could I get birth control?

CLINIC: No. We would have to have a pap smear on file.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that you have a normal pap smear because we’re not allowed to give any sort of sample unless we have an okay pap smear on your record.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant could I get that?

CLINIC: Could you get a birth control pill? No, because if we don’t have —

CALLER: Could I get like a pap smear thing?

CLINIC: We don’t do pap smears here. You would have to get that with your regular doctor.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But if I had that would you guys be able to do birth control?

CLINIC: Your pap smear on file?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Right, but we don’t do that unless we see you for the termination. We don’t just hand it out. You know, that’s something you would want to go through Planned Parenthood or something like that.

CALLER: Planned Parenthood?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: It really depends on what you decide to tell them, how much you let them know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I didn’t tell you about my boyfriend would I be able to get the abortion?

CLINIC: I know from right now if you were to give me too much information I wouldn’t be able to answer that. That’s — you know, if you want to have that done you would want to be a little bit more discreet about the information you give. But if they find out you’re not legal age then they will have to file a report to the state.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So even if my boyfriend wasn’t 22?

CLINIC: Even if he wasn’t — if you’re under 14 it is considered rape in the state of California.

CALLER: Okay. All right. So all aright. If I had any other questions could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Sophia.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: But I recommend you call that number. They have a lot of great resources for any information you need.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: The number for the National Abortion Federation? They know?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Anything else I can help you with?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay, then.

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 3x)

CLINIC: Good morning, Family Planning Specialists. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: Well, it depends upon how far you are into your pregnancy. Do you know?

CALLER: Not really.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. According to that last period date, it shows that you’ll be four weeks and four days.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now here we begin terminating at seven weeks. What type of insurance do you have?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. It would $400 if you want to be asleep and $300 if you want to be awake.

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything. Would it be all right if he just took care of it now, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Oh, no, we don’t have to. We don’t tell parents. It’s just that if you are a minor, you will have to have someone here that’s over the age of 21 with you.

CALLER: Okay. So he could be there since he’s 22?

CLINIC: Wait just one moment, okay?

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Don’t go away.

(Long pause – advertisements)

CLINIC: Okay. Thank you for holding. I spoke with one of the managers because I wasn’t really sure how we handled this situation. But what she said is that you will need to bring in a relative that’s over 21 years of age. It cannot be your boyfriend.

CALLER: Oh. I don’t have anyone.

CLINIC: That’s our procedure here.

CALLER: Well, is there anything else I can do?

CLINIC: Is this the first facility that you’ve called?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: You may want to try contacting Women’s Choice Clinic. Their number there is 510-444-5676. And see if they can go ahead and schedule you without your having to have any relatives or parents present. I believe they do, but you may want to call and check.

CALLER: I just wasn’t really sure if I was pregnant. Could I come in there where you’re at and get a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Yeah. We can give you a pregnancy test. We have three pregnancy tests. And you can come in tomorrow from 8:30 to 9:30 if you’d like.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know?

CLINIC: No. All you’ll do is come in. You’ll fill out a little form so that we can take some urine from you. Then you will leave the urine. You’ll go and call us back between 3 and 5:00 that same day to get your results.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So it would be all right if my boyfriend brought me then?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. It will be fine. He can bring you here for your pregnancy test. It’s fine.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: No. We don’t offer birth control.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: But I could give you some references where you can go.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. This is completely confidential. Everything is very confidential.

CALLER: Well, you’ve just been so nice. I wish I could talk to my mom like I talk to you.

CLINIC: (Laughing).

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and ask for you? What’s your name?

CLINIC: My name is Joyce.

CALLER: What was it?

CLINIC: Joyce.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. Trish. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was on hold, but my friend’s mom came in, and I had to hang up real quick.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to be right with you. You’re the next caller, so I’ll be right with you, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. You wanted to schedule an abortion?

CALLER: Well, I wanted to ask questions.

CLINIC: Okay. Go ahead.

CALLER: Well, I was asking how much it would be.

CLINIC: Okay. When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. You are probably somewhere around — January 3rd, somewhere right around nine weeks or so. So you’d be in that 370 range up until 13 weeks, until you’re over 13 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 next month. And my friend said that you guys would have to tell mu parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you won’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: We don’t — no. You don’t need to bring your parents with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s not required.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if my boyfriend’s there?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: He is going to pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Well, were just talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Not if he’s paying with cash. I mean, if he’s paying with a credit card, he would.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So you guys wouldn’t have to know anything about him?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. No.

CALLER: Okay. I really haven’t taken a pregnancy test since — I mean, I haven’t had one yet. I just haven’t had my period for a while, and I’m scared. Would you guys do a pregnancy test first?

CLINIC: Yeah. But if I were you, I would take a test first, just like a home test or whatever.

CALLER: All right. Those are usually right?

CLINIC: Yeah. And then if that’s positive, they call us and schedule the appointment.

CALLER: If it says that I’m not pregnant, could I come there for birth control?

CLINIC: If I were you, I’d go — well, yeah. You can. It’s $80 though. And you get three months worth of pills. And then after that, you’re going to have to pay at a pharmacy the price of birth control pills. So you can do that or you can go through — I think they have programs like Pacific County Clinic or on Planned Parenthood for teenagers.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, not at all. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know how much it cost?

CLINIC: It depends on how much you make.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t have a job. It’s just I’m going to be 14 later on this month. And my friend said that — well, would you guys have to tell my parents? Because my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: Well, you could get exempted eligibility, which is like Medi-Cal.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Yeah. We won’t tell anyone. It’s confidential, and you go through the Medi-Cal here.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for anything, so do I need that Medi-Cal thing?

CLINIC: Well, that way you don’t have to pay for it.

CALLER: How much does it cost? He just doesn’t want anyone to know about anything. So he just was going to pay for everything.

CLINIC: Hold on. Let me check the chart.

(Pause)

What was the date of your —

CALLER: Of my what?

CLINIC: The first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So you’re about nine weeks. Medi-Cal is the easiest way to go, and no one will know what it’s for.

CALLER: Okay. So they wouldn’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No, no one would.

CALLER: But would my boyfriend have to fill out any forms?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: You would just have to.

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure? Because I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: Yeah. You can come in and have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, is it any way that it would come up that I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Well, if you weren’t pregnant, it would come up that you’re not.

CALLER: Do you think that it’s possible that I’m not pregnant if I haven’t had my period that long?

CLINIC: Anything’s possible. But you should come and get a test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you know where we are located?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend does. But if it came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there just so that we don’t have to go through all this again?

CLINIC: Yeah. But you’d have to have an appointment and get an annual exam to do that.

CALLER: All right. How much does that cost?

CLINIC: You can get a little green card that pays for it being that you don’t make any money. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And the pregnancy test will be free too because we’ll sign you up for one of the green cards.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So just come in, and we’ll do that for you.

CALLER: What time do you guys normally — what time are you normally open?

CLINIC: We close at 6 today.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call my boyfriend and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. If you’re less than 12 weeks, it’s going to be $575.

CALLER: Okay. So how do you know if you are or not?

CLINIC: According to your last menstrual period. You said it was January what?

CALLER: 3rd.

CLINIC: So right now I have you somewhere about nine weeks.

CALLER: Oh, okay. How much did you say it was then? I’m sorry.

CLINIC: $575.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend says that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of everything? I mean, he was wanting to pay for everything with cash anyway.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s something you would need to talk to the office about. I don’t know if they’re going to tell your parents or not. What city do you live in?

CALLER: I live in San Jose.

CLINIC: I can give you the number to San Jose.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And that number is 254-9096.

CALLER: Okay. Could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Sure. You can walk into the office today between the hours of 9 and 4.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: That I don’t know. That’s something you need to talk to them about.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, let me call them. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Tina.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come into where you’re at and get birth control?

CLINIC: We’re strictly an abortion provider here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. Can I talk to Tina real quick?

CLINIC: To who?

CALLER: Oh. Oh, I’m sorry. I just talked to Tina. And she said to call you guys.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Tina’s a code name we give. This is Choice Medical Group.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What’s your name?

CALLER: I’m Lisa.

CLINIC: What’s your last name, Lisa?

CALLER: Carter.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Is Mia?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Carter?

CALLER: Lisa Carter.

CLINIC: What’s your number, hon?

CALLER: Oh. I’m at my friend’s house. I just was calling to ask some questions actually.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. We don’t know who tried to call you. What do you need? Probably the corporate office.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: It was probably the corporate office when you first scheduled your appointment.

CALLER: I haven’t scheduled an appointment.

CLINIC: Oh, you haven’t?

CALLER: I called them, and they told me to call you guys.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I was wondering about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: The main question is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month. My friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, you’re telling me right now that you’re with a man that is too old for you. You’re 14 years old?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. And he’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That’s not good (laughing).

CALLER: Why is that not good? What do you mean?

CLINIC: Because he’s over 18. Even though you’re having consensual sex, it’s still statutory.

CALLER: Statutory?

CLINIC: You ever heard of that?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: What could happen? What do you mean?

CLINIC: (Sigh) Well, if you’re under 18, we have you sign a minor’s consent. And it states on there whether your partner is over 21 or under 21. If he’s over 21, that’s basically statutory rape, honey, even though —

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: That doesn’t matter. That does not matter.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, what shall I do then?

CLINIC: Let’s see what it says. When are you going to be 14?

CALLER: On the 19th.

CLINIC: Yeah. I don’t know. Can you hold on real quick?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

Do your parents know that you have a boyfriend this old?

CALLER: Yeah, they know him. I mean, he works with my dad. But they have no idea we’re having sex. If they knew about that, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: Right. Okay. I’m going to let you talk to Dawn. She’s the manager. She’s going to explain it to you a little bit more, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: What was your name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Oh, you haven’t been here yet. Okay.

CALLER: Right. The reason why I’m calling is to ask questions.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month. And my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of everything, and you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, actually, because of your age and his age, I’m going to have to report it to the state.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Because you’re really young, and he’s really old.

CALLER: So it would just be better if I don’t come in there then?

CLINIC: Well, it’s up to you. But I am obligated by law, and so is every other facility like this — we’re obligated by law to call and tell the Department of Health and Human Resources or Human Services.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want anybody to get in trouble. I mean, what can I do?

CLINIC: What I’ve been told will happen is that they’ll probably call you. But I don’t know if they’ll want to press charges against him or not. I mean, your parents may want to press charges against him because you are too young and he is too old. Because, basically, what they call this is statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. We’re in love. We’re going to be married. I don’t understand.

CLINIC: Do your parents know that you want to marry this guy?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, he works with my dad.

CLINIC: Well then, maybe your parents wouldn’t do anything anyway.

CALLER: Well, they know we’re going out; they just don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, I don’t know what they would do if they found out about that. I mean, they can’t know at all.

CLINIC: But, unfortunately, I have to call. If you come in and I get that information, I am obligated by law as is any other medical provider. Because it’s there to protect children — which you still are — from child abuse, which this could be considered.

CALLER: But I’m not being abused.

CLINIC: It’s against the law. I mean, technically he could go to jail for this.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want him to go to jail.

CLINIC: (Laughs)

CALLER: He’s the only one that’s ever there for me. If he went to jail, I don’t know what I would do.

CLINIC: I’m just telling you I have to report it if you come in. I mean, if you — yeah, I would have to.

CALLER: I’m not really sure, actually, if I’m really pregnant, because I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd, so I’m scared.

CLINIC: Yeah. If you ignore the pregnancy, they’ll definitely find out about if you are, because eventually you’ll start to show, and you’ll have a child. And then your parents will know that you’re having sex.

CALLER: Well, where can I go to get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Well, you can come into ours.

CALLER: Yeah. But if I come in there, you’re going to send my boyfriend to jail?

CLINIC: (Talking to someone else) The pregnancy test doesn’t say anything like that? No, the pregnancy test doesn’t ask you questions about that.

CALLER: Oh. But if it turned out that I was pregnant, then everyone would get in trouble?

CLINIC: No, no. Because like I said, we don’t necessarily have all that information down on just a pregnancy test. We have you just fill out a form that tells us your name, your address, and things like that. And then you just take a pregnancy test. Or you could try a home pregnancy test. You could try the EPT. That’s a pretty good one. It’s like 15 bucks. Make him buy you one. Basically, you pee on a stick. And you could try that first and see what you get.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come in there and get birth control?

CLINIC: No, we don’t, but Planned Parenthood does.

CALLER: Oh. But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: They probably would. If they knew that you were having sex with somebody that old, yes. They’d probably inform — they have to. We have to by law inform. If I don’t do this, and somebody were to find out about it, I would get into some real trouble. It is the law. It’s a state California law that I have to comply with. Every doctor is going to be the same way. There is no escaping this.

CALLER: Well, could I get birth control if they didn’t know?

CLINIC: Well, you can probably get birth control anyway. This isn’t really our business. Our business is that we report it to the state like they tell us to, and then the state deals with it. We’re not here to judge you. It’s like most of us don’t even want to have to report it, you know what I mean?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s because we are obligated by law, we have to do this.

CALLER: Well, if I go to a Planned Parenthood and I didn’t tell them —

CLINIC: I cannot tell you to lie or things like that, but you’ve got to do what you got to do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know what I’m saying?

CALLER: Yeah. Okay.

CLINIC: But, definitely, this is something I would have to report on. If you come in and give me your name, and you tell me you’re 14 and your boyfriend is 22; then, yes, I have to report it. There’s too much of discrepancy in your ages.

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I’ve got to think about all this. Could I call you back and talk to you if I had any other questions? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Dawn.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Yeah. Okay?

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. This is Jenny. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know how much it cost?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: You’ll probably less than three months, so it’s going to be $360.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you won’t have to tell anyone?

CLINIC: No. He don’t have to sign anything because if they find out that he’s 22, he can go to jail.

CALLER: What do mean?

CLINIC: You’re 14. You’re 13. You don’t have to — just come in. If you bring a money order with you, you’ll be fine.

CALLER: And he won’t go to jail?

CLINIC: No. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You just have to say that you consented to —

CALLER: Well, I did. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Oh. Okay, yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty. So you need to make an appointment.

CALLER: When do you guys normally do that, have your appointments?

CLINIC: Yeah. We do have them like — next available will be for Thursday, Sunday, and then Tuesday and Thursday.

CALLER: So Sunday you said?

CLINIC: Yeah. I have Thursday or Sunday or Tuesday and Friday.

CALLER: What time on Sunday?

CLINIC: I will have to check. They’re all in the morning.

CALLER: Well, do you do a pregnancy test first just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah, uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Because I haven’t had one yet, really.

CLINIC: Yeah, you should do that, actually.

CALLER: So I can come in there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Yeah. Why don’t you do that first, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Between 8 and 4:30 Monday through Friday.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It’s free.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get —

CLINIC: You can make the appointment, for the next available appointment.

CALLER: But if I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: No. You need to have at least two pregnancy tests.

CALLER: Okay. But do you guys do birth control at all?

CLINIC: Yes. That one, it cost $80 though.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay, no problem.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know about birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Would anybody have to know that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Okay?

CALLER: So you’re sure that nobody would have to find out about anything?

CLINIC: Not unless you tell them. Okay?

CALLER: All right. Okay. I call you back to make an appointment after I look at my schedule?

CLINIC: Sure, no problem. Okay?

CALLER: And your name was Jenny?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Family Planning Associates. This is Diana? (unclear). Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Hold on a minute?

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it cost there?

CLINIC: The fee is 350.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents about all this. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We don’t tell anyone. Everything that we do here is confidential.

CALLER: Okay. All right. We were talking about all this, and he said that he’s going to pay cash for everything. But we just don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to fill out any forms if he was paying?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Let me go ahead and transfer your call, okay?

CALLER: To who?

CLINIC: To the manager. Hold on.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering about getting an abortion?

CLINIC: For an appointment?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I was wanting to ask questions. I’m going to be 14 next month, or later on this month —

CLINIC: Fourteen years old?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: My friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell on me?

CLINIC: If you’re 13 years old, we would have to contract Department of Social Services.

CALLER: Who is that?

CLINIC: A social worker.

CALLER: Okay. Why?

CLINIC: Why? Because you’re 13 years old.

CALLER: Okay. Well, should I wait until I’m 14?

CLINIC: I can’t tell you what to do, but we would have to contact that department if you are 13 years old.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my last period was January 3rd. That’s why I’m just really worried about all this.

CLINIC: Let’s say you are in your first trimester, which is six weeks, up to 13 weeks, counting from the first day of your last period —

CALLER: That was January 3rd.

CLINIC: And your periods are regular?

CALLER: Usually.

CLINIC: Usually?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Not all the time?

CALLER: Well, I’ve been late before but only like a week.

CLINIC: You already had a pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd, and I’m just really scared.

CLINIC: Thirteen weeks is April 4th. So once you’re over 13-and-a-half weeks pregnant, then it would be a two-day procedure. But as long as you’re between six and 13 weeks, it would only be a one day. So I’m not going to tell you to wait; you know what I mean?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’ll be 14 on March 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if you want to wait until then, go ahead and do so, and then make your appointment.

CALLER: But would you have to report to the people there?

CLINIC: Not at all.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So it would just be better to wait then?

CLINIC: Well, I can’t tell you what to do, but only if you don’t want your parents to know. I’m telling you that we would have to let them know if you’re 13 years old. Okay?

CALLER: So could I come in there for a pregnancy test though just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah, you could.

CALLER: Well, what time do you normally do those?

CLINIC: We’re doing them now. You could just walk in. We close at 4:30. So you might want to try to come in before then, okay?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s got to get the time off work.

CLINIC: If not, Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30. You could come in tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. First you would have to come for a pap smear, which is $80. And then we’ll give you a six-month supply of pills.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: If you were 13 (laughing)?

CALLER: If I was 13, they would have to know?

CLINIC: Hold on.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: If you were just coming in for a pap smear and birth control, then we wouldn’t report it.

CALLER: Okay. So it would be all right if my boyfriend was there with me, and you wouldn’t tell anybody about us or him or anything?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: It would be all right if my boyfriend was there with me? Because he said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: He could wait for you in the lobby. But when you’re having a pap smear, no, he cannot be there with you. You know what I mean?

CALLER: But he can be in the lobby, and he can pay for everything?

CLINIC: He can wait for you there. Yeah.

CALLER: And he wouldn’t get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: No. That wouldn’t be a problem.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So if it ended up that I was pregnant, I should call you after the 19th?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to report it then?

CLINIC: No, not if you’re 14.

CALLER: Okay. If I had any other questions, could I call you before — I need to talk to my boyfriend and see exactly when he can get off work to take me.

CLINIC: Sure. But you might want to come in and get a test though. You can just walk in for that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Ferthice. You can talk to anyone. It doesn’t matter. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Family Planning Associates. Helen. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much they cost?

CLINIC: 350 for surgery, and it’s 425 for the abortion pill.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month —

CLINIC: Fourteen weeks?

CALLER: Fourteen years old. My birthday is on the 19th. But my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell anybody. No, that is not correct. But we do have to report it to Child Protective Services for anybody that’s under 13.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: That’s a law.

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way not to have to do that? What do you mean?

CLINIC: You’re under 13?

CALLER: Well, I’m 13 right now. I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. When was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: And when did you want to do the procedure?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: Ma’am, from the age of 13, it would be reported. If you are 14 on March 19th, you might want to wait until you’re 14 to come in then.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Because at that point, it will not be reported.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend’s 22, and he said he would take care of everything. Would that make any difference?

CLINIC: That makes it even worst if your boyfriend’s 22 and you’re 13.

CALLER: Why?

CLINIC: Hold on, please.

(Pause, music playing)

CLINIC: Just so you understand, legally, if you’re 13 years there’s something called statutory rape. It’s sexual assault. That’s what it’s considered.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married. He said he’s going to take care of me forever.

CLINIC: Would you listen to me, ma’am? I’ll just explain it to you. This is the legal law, a California law. It has nothing to do with us, or what we believe, or if you’re getting married or any of that. So legally we would have to report it to the authorities. That’s just so you understand, okay?

CALLER: So what can I do then?

CLINIC: At that point, they’ll come to your house. They’ll probably send a social worker to come investigate.

CALLER: What can I do so that they don’t do that?

CLINIC: You can’t, ma’am. If we know how old you are, then legally we have a responsibility to inform the Child Protective Services because you’re legally considered a child.

CALLER: But I’ll be 14 after the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay. But still there’s an age difference; 14 and 22, ma’am, still falls into that range. Okay?

CALLER: So what shall I do then? I don’t know what to do?

CLINIC: Do you want to schedule for an abortion, ma’am? I would have to take information. When you come in, just be aware that they would have to send that through California state. So they’d probably send a social worker or somebody to your home, somebody assigned to you, ma’am, to check on you. And they possibly will press charges. It’s not going to be anything that you want to or not. The state can take that upon themselves to do that at that time. You can call an attorney if you’d like, get some legal advice. But other than that I can only tell you what we would do here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yeah. The test is free, ma’am. You can walk in at any time. Just no children are allowed.

CALLER: But would you have to tell people then if I was coming in for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Not for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: We’d have to schedule you for a pap smear. We could take care of that for you. Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: You can come in at any time. Why don’t you come in and take a test, and then we’ll go from there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you promise you won’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Legally, I don’t have to tell anybody if you’re coming in for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: What time do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We’re here until 4:30.

CALLER: Everyday?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call you?

CLINIC: Of course.

CALLER: And what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Emily.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.
