(Dialing, phone ringing)

CLINIC: Reproductive Health Service. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Six to ten weeks, it’s $400. And it goes up $75 each week after the 10th week.

CALLER: Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: From your last period.

CALLER: Well, that was January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd? Okay. I have you at about five weeks.

CALLER: Okay. So how much would it be then?

CLINIC: Four hundred dollars.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month. And my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. You’re 14 years old?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th of this month.

CLINIC: You’ll be how old?

CALLER: Fourteen years old.

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. You would have to have your legal guardian come in here and sign for you, and they’d have to bring a birth certificate.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t tell my parents at all. If they found out that me and my boyfriend were having sex, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: I’m sorry, ma’am. Anywhere you go, they’re — yeah, you have to have your parents sign for you since you’re under age. And that’s anywhere.

CALLER: Well, there’s no way to not have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. You have to — it has to be — you have to come in here with your legal guardian, with your birth certificate, and that’s everywhere.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yeah, uh-huh. You can come in here for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: But will my parents have to be there for that?

CLINIC: No, not for a pregnancy test they don’t

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this. He said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it all?

CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, he could pay for it, but your parents still have to come in here and sign for you.

CALLER: For a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No, no, no, not for a pregnancy test, for a procedure.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: A pregnancy test, you can come on in and get the pregnancy test without your parents.

CALLER: And my boyfriend can come with me for that?

CLINIC: Yeah, he can.

CALLER: How much does it cost for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: One test is $2. You have to be at least two weeks for your period. One test is $15. That’s the day you’re suppose to start your period. And one is $20. That’s a blood test. That’s two weeks before your period.

CALLER: Well, which one’s the best one?

CLINIC: When did you say your last period was?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: You could take the $2 test, and that should pick up.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah. If not, I’d run the $15 test on you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. You’d have to have a pap. A pap is $80.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control though?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh, not birth control, only the procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. How much should I bring for the pregnancy test and birth control then?

CLINIC: Okay. Can you hold, please?

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay, ma’am. I’m sorry about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What was I saying?

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost? Would I get the pregnancy test and the birth control pills on the same day?

CLINIC: If you would like to, if you got the pap the same day you took the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, how much should I bring for all that?

CLINIC: Well, the pap is $80. And then it just depends what pregnancy test you want to take. We’ll just say 15 just in case. So bring about $100 with you.

CALLER: And he can pay in cash?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. We don’t take personal checks. Cash, Master Card, Visa, American Express.

CALLER: Okay. So you just don’t take personal checks?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Yeah. My name’s Amber.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re welcome.

CLINIC: West Allen Medical (unclear) Women’s Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: Okay. I can’t hear you very well. Can you talk a little louder?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: Okay, thanks. I’m sorry.

CLINIC: Can you hold, please?

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Thanks for holding.

CALLER: Hi. So you guys do do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How many weeks are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: When was your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Anything 12 weeks or less would be 300, and that includes your lab work, ultra sound, counseling, procedure, birth control pills, all of your take-home medications, and a follow-up visit.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22 —

CLINIC: Hold on one second for me.

CALLER: All right.

(Short pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Now how old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 later on this month, like on the 19th. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. If you’re that age, then you have to have a parent or legal guardian present with you.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to have to tell them. I mean, they know my boyfriend. He works with my dad. They just can’t find out we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do.

CLINIC: But the thing is, is you’re a minor. And the state law requires that you have a parent or legal guardian with you to give consent for you to do the procedure. If you are emancipated, which means if you’re married, you can do that without their consent, or sometimes you can go through the court system and get a waiver. But as young as you are, I don’t know that they would grant you that.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do I need to get a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: You can try to go through the court system, but at your age I don’t know if they would award that to you. So most likely you’re going to have to go through your parents.

CALLER: Oh. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure I am pregnant though?

CLINIC: You can do that without their consent?

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. So do you think that there would be any way that I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: Have you missed a period?

CALLER: Yeah. I haven’t had it since January 3rd.

CLINIC: And you’ve had unprotected intercourse?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And you’ve been having normal periods?

CALLER: Usually. Well, every once in a while I’m like a week late, but it’s never been this long.

CLINIC: If you’ve had unprotected intercourse, and you’ve been having normal periods that you haven’t had now, then there’s a probability that you have gotten pregnant.

CALLER: Oh. But I could come in for a pregnancy test and check it out?

CLINIC: You could.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody would have to know about it?

CLINIC: No. And if you come in for your pregnancy test, if you inquire about the information and get the waiver, we can go ahead and give that to you and let you go to the courthouse.

CALLER: Okay. Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this. And we decided that — well, he said that he would pay cash for everything, but we don’t anyone to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it all, for like the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No. We don’t have to do anything for the pregnancy test. I mean, if you get a sensitive test, it’s $20. You wouldn’t have to sign or do anything.

CALLER: Well, if that test came out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You could. You would just have to set up an appointment for a gynecology, and come back and get your pap smear and everything done.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: They should not know.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, I can’t drive. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the birth control pills?

CLINIC: Well, you would have a prescription. You’d just go through a pharmacy.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. I just have a lot of questions, and I don’t know, I can’t think of anything else to ask you. But if I thought of something, could I cal and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Christine.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re welcome.

CLINIC: Summit Medical Center. Louqueida (ph) speaking. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: For how many weeks?

CALLER: I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: Do you know the first date of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You’re about 10 weeks.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: About 10 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: From 6 to 12 weeks, 365 for the light sedation, 405 for the heavy, and an extra 50 if you’re RH negative.

CALLER: If I’m already what?

CLINIC: if you’re RH negative, it’s an extra 50.

CALLER: Oh, okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. You say you’re only 14 years old?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: No, ma’am. You have to be 18 without a parent.

CALLER: Okay. Is there any way not to have to tell my parents at all though?

CLINIC: Well, unless you get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: It’s where you will go before a judge, and he’ll make the decision on whether or not you can make the decision on your own. But they’re not giving them in Birmingham.

CALLER: Oh, they’re not?

CLINIC: So you can try to call Tuscaloosa.

CALLER: Tuscaloosa?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. They’re doing it there.

CALLER: Do they usually say yes?

CLINIC: I think so there.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test just to make sure? It’s just that I haven’t had one yet.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you live in Birmingham?

CALLER: I live in Fairfield.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s fine. They’re $10.

CALLER: Ten dollars?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Oh, okay, yeah. They’re $10.

CALLER: Okay. But if I came in for a pregnancy test, would my parents have to know about that?

CLINIC: No, not for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So would it be all right if my boyfriend brought me?

CLINIC: Yeah, if it’s just for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control the same day?

CLINIC: You’re 14?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: So you’re 13.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Hold on. Let me check, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. After the 19th when I’m going to be 14, would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills? It’s just I can’t drive yet?

CLINIC: Center for Choice. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It varies. Is this for you?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: How many weeks of pregnancy?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd. Let’s see. Let me estimate that for you then. Was that when it began or ended, honey?

CALLER: Began.

CLINIC: Okay. And was that one pretty normal compared to your others?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: About nine weeks now, so you’re in the first trimester.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you know if your blood type if positive or negative?

CALLER: I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: Okay. Because that’s a factor too that goes in to making up the fee. Have you ever been pregnant before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, I’ll give you the information both ways. Most of us — about 85 percent of us — are RH positive. So the odds are that’s what you are. And do you have insurance or would this be private pay?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. But the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Would he be able to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No. In Alabama, you do have to have the consent of one parent or legal guardian.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: And they do have to come to the clinic to do that.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Where are you calling me from?

CALLER: Prattville.

CLINIC: In your phone back — do you have the Montgomery phone book?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do they list one of the clinics in Pensacola? Because in Florida, if you’re 14 or over, you need no one’s consent. And there are two clinics in Pensacola. Do they list one in your phone book? I don’t have them here.

CALLER: I would have to look, but I think I can find it.

CLINIC: Okay. And that would be a way around it. If you don’t feel comfortable to involve your parents, then you could just go to Pensacola.

CALLER: Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: They’ll do all that for you?

CALLER: In Pensacola?

CLINIC: Um-hmm, yeah. You’re in Prattville? You might want to go to one of the clinics there in Montgomery just to get your pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The best one I know of — and I don’t have their phone number handy. But it’s Reproductive Health Service. And they’re downtown, like down on Perry.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just my boyfriend gave me the number where you’re at. And I have a friend that lives in Mount Vernon. So we were actually wanting to go to you guys.

CLINIC: Yeah. Well, you would need to have one parent or legal guardian with you.

CALLER: But I mean like to get a pregnancy test.

CLINIC: Well, you really don’t — I mean, we’ll be glad to do it for you. You’re in Prattville now?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah. As I said, there’s a good center there in Montgomery. They’d be a lot closer for you.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: That is your private business.

CALLER: So my parents don’t have to be there for that?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything. But we don’t want anybody to know about us. Would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. And your best bet, it sounds like, is going to Pensacola to have the procedure done. But the clinic in Montgomery that can do a reliable test for you and is probably going to be not that hard for you to get to is Reproductive Health Service. And they’re on Perry Street. That’s now near the governor’s mansion, in that old part of town.

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control too?

CLINIC: Probably with them. Probably so.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. At 14 or over, you are entitled to any component of health care without your parent’s consent except for abortion. And that’s in Alabama. Florida doesn’t have that law.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: I just wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you. Could I call you if I had any other questions?

CLINIC: My name is Pat. And the director of the clinic in Montgomery is June. And you’ll find that she’s understanding too.

CALLER: Really? All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Good luck. Bye bye.

(dialing sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: We don’t right now at the moment. We are going to start probably in a month. How far along are you?

CALLER: Well, I’m not real sure. Like my second — or my last period was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. Which would probably be too far along by the time we start. Our Birmingham office does them.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want me to give you their number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 205 is the area code. 322-2121.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know if — like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents. But can I just have my boyfriend do it because he’s going to be — he’s 22.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. No. It has to be your mother or father or your guardian that goes with you in the state of Alabama. Now I’m not real sure about Tennessee and the surrounding states what their laws are, but in the state of Alabama you have to have your mother, father or guardian.

CALLER: Well, is there any way not to tell them? Because like I can’t tell them because they can’t find out because they would totally freak out.

CLINIC: There is — I mean, the way that you have to go around that is go into court and ask them for a — it’s where you can have the abortion without your parents knowing. It’s probably going to be a long, drawn-out process. Hold on and I’ll get you the number to the one in Tennessee to see what their law is, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: — without an exam. To find out more, ask a staffmember about our non-exam program for birth control pills and shots. We appreciate your patience. Please be assured that your call will receive the time and attention it deserves when we return to the line. (music) Whatever the reason, if you’ve had intercourse and did not use birth control, you’re at risk of becoming pregnant. Planned Parenthood offers emergency contraception that can lower the risk of pregnancy. Emergency contraception must be taken within 72 hours to prevent a pregnancy. If you’d like to know more, call our family planning clinic. (music) Thank you for your patience. You will be assisted momentarily. Please stay on the line. (music) Many women don’t know they can receive prompt, affordable treatment for yeast —

CLINIC: Ma’am?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. This one is in Nashville.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: This is where you could go. This is what it says to refer a minor to Planned Parenthood in Nashville.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And I could give you their number. You have to tell the clinic that you’re coming from Alabama and you need to get the bypass and the procedure in the same day if possible.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So when you call them, tell them you’re 14, you want to do the bypass, you’re coming from Alabama.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And they’ll make an appointment for your abortion and refer you to a volunteer lawyer who will help you go through the bypass, and they can probably do it in the same day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Here’s the number.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The area code is 615-321-7216. And just make sure to tell them that you want to do the bypass, and that you’re coming from Alabama.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what if the judge says no?

CLINIC: This is where it’s easier. They said that they believe the bypass works here. This is what it says. “The minor can go to Nashville where we believe the bypass works faster.”

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: You could do that. Let’s see here’s — oh, no, that’s in Tuscaloosa and it’s not one of our clinics, so we don’t refer — which is probably closer actually or about the same to go to Nashville. So let’s see. Yeah. Just call that number and see what they could do for you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it okay to come there and get like a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: And you — would you have to tell anybody that I was there getting —

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not. We can’t. By law we can’t tell anybody you were here. If your mother or father called here, you know, the only thing we could say is, we can’t tell you if she was here or if she was not here. We can’t give out any information whatsoever.

CALLER: Okay. So like if my boyfriend brought me you wouldn’t have to —

CLINIC: No, no.

CALLER: — tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: No. Absolutely not.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you know where we’re located?

CALLER: No, but — well, he does, so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Is it okay if I call you back if he had any questions?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Gina.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. Would you hold, please?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: (pause) Thank you for holding. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do — on Tuesdays only.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you have to be — like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: No, he cannot. You have to have a parent come in with you and there’s certain things that you’re going to need to bring in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have to bring in your original birth certificate, a picture ID. It needs to be a school ID or a non driver’s license. And your parent needs to come with you; and also the parent that brings you, they need to have the same last name as you do. It has to — it’s the state law here you have to parent consent.

CALLER: But I can’t tell my parents because they would — they hate my boyfriend because they say he’s too old for me, but —

CLINIC: Well, he is too old for you. He’s over, you know, 18, and you’re a minor.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: The only thing I can have you do, I can — they have a clinic in Florida that you can go to. You don’t have to have a consent, but if you do want to have it here in Alabama you will have to have a waiver to get that done. And I can give you some information on that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You have to go the courthouse and get a judicial bypass in order to do that.

CALLER: Do I have to get a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: No. You just need to contact the — you’re going to have to get a representative. Yes, you definitely will have to have that.

CALLER: How do I pay for that?

CLINIC: There’s not a fee for that.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But you need to call the courthouse and get some information on that. If you want to hold on a moment?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: (pause) Hi, ma’am?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So you need to — where do you live at?

CALLER: I live in Mt. Vernon.

CLINIC: Okay. Mt. Vernon — is that here in Mobile? So wherever you have a termination you do need to go to the courthouse in that county and get a judicial bypass. You just need to go to the courthouse and ask them for the paperwork for that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Or go to Florida?

CLINIC: Florida is the only place you don’t have to have a consent. What is the age limit down here for Florida? She’s 14. Hold on one moment. Okay. Let me give you the number to Florida also, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, that number is 800-866-3058. Is there any way you can come in and I can give you some information on how to go about getting the judicial bypass?

CALLER: I’d have to call my boyfriend and see when he can bring me, but.

CLINIC: Okay. If you want to do that, we can get that to you, or I can mail it to you. Is there somewhere you can receive mail?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: How many weeks are you?

CALLER: I don’t know. Like, well the last time I had my period was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: I’m sorry?

CALLER: The last time I had my period was like the second week in December, so.

CLINIC: December what?

CALLER: I guess like December 12th.

CLINIC: Okay. So if it was December 12th, right now you’re looking at about 9 weeks, 4 days.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But you do need to get that taken care of as soon as possible if you’re going to go to the courthouse and get the bypass.

CALLER: But like if —

CLINIC: And there’s no charge for filing the petition, not at all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You get a court-appointed lawyer.

CALLER: So if I come in there for like a pregnancy test is it all right if my boyfriend brings me? You guys wouldn’t have to tell about him or anything?

CLINIC: Well, you can come. Everything is confidential here. Pregnancy tests. And it’s $5.00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’ll need to fill out a sheet, but everything is confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So like if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: You’ll need to fill out paperwork, yes. But, no, we don’t contact anyone, no.

CALLER: Okay. Is it all right if I call you back with the, to figure out when to make an appointment?

CLINIC: You sure can.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Ellen.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
