(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Kanawha Surgery Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: That’s what you need to know because that’s what determines how much it cost.

CALLER: Well, my last period was January 3rd.

CLINIC: What was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Are you on some kind of weird phone or something? Because, I don’t know, it’s real loud.

CALLER: I don’t know. Is that better?

CLINIC: Not much.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re nine weeks now. Between 8 and 12 weeks to have anesthesia, it’s $470.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have —

CLINIC: You’re 14 years old?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter, honey. Your boyfriend can’t sign for you to do anything.

CALLER: Oh. But would you have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Well, yes. No, you’ll have to. They have to sign for you to have it done.

CALLER: But is there any way not to tell my parents? I mean, I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: No, not unless you get a waiver letter from a doctor. And I don’t know if you can get one to do it for you when you’re 14. I doubt it. If you were older, you could. But so many of them they don’t want to do that whenever you’re that young. But you can get a waiver letter. Where do you live at?

CALLER: I live in Goldtown (?).

CLINIC: There’s a place in Parkersburg called Planned Parenthood. They’re in Vienna actually. You know where the mall is at in Parkersburg?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: That’s where Vienna’s at. It’s called Planned Parenthood. There number is — are you ready?

CALLER: Almost. Hold on. Okay.

CLINIC: 295-3331.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If you call them, they may give you a waiver letter. But because of your age, hey, I don’t know if they will or not. But you can call them and ask them.

CALLER: Well, if I get the waiver letter —

CLINIC: Do your parents know you’re dating somebody 22?

CALLER: Yeah, I mean —

CLINIC: Hmmm.

CALLER: — he works with my dad. But they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, I don’t know what to tell you. You can call up there and see if they can do that. If they cannot, we cannot do the abortion without it. Okay?

CALLER: So if they give it to me, then I just come in there, and —

CLINIC: No, then you have to make an appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. But if he was paying cash — if he was paying for it, would he have to fill out any forms?

CLINIC: Well, yeah, you have to fill out forms, honey. This is a medical procedure. It’s not like we’re a place up an alley somewhere. This is a medical procedure, and you have to fill out forms whenever you come in to have something done.

CALLER: But would his name have to be on anything?

CLINIC: If he’s planning on driving you, he has to sign that he’s going to drive you home, yes.

CALLER: But would anybody find out about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Do you guys do the pregnancy test there just beforehand?

CLINIC: We do one beforehand, but you — have you not had a test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Okay. You should go to the health department, and they can do one for you.

CALLER: Will they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, I don’t know. So if your boyfriend’s 22, he should know how to go to a pharmacy and buy a pregnancy test.

CALLER: But are those usually right?

CLINIC: Well, if you read the package and do it correctly.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: We don’t offer family planning where it’s free. Your best thing to do would be to go to the Health Department to get that. Because then you get your pap smear and all of your birth control and everything for free. Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I can get the doctor to sign a waiver, you’re sure that nobody would have to know about anything?

CLINIC: If they’ll sign a waiver letter for you, yes, I’m positive.

CALLER: And nobody would have to know about me and my boyfriend, and I wouldn’t have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: That’s correct.

CALLER: Okay. Can I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter, honey. Anybody can make an appointment for you. But now you’ll have to go up there and get that waiver letter before you can make an appointment here.

CALLER: Okay. And then I just call you and make an appointment?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(dialing sound) (ringing 1X)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This is Sharon. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we do not.

CALLER: Do you know where I should call for that?

CLINIC: Where are you calling from?

CALLER: I’m in St. Mary’s.

CLINIC: Okay. The closest place would be in Charleston, West Virginia.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And there’s two clinics down there. One of them is called Women’s Health Center, and it’s 1-800-642-8670. And then the (Canollis?) Surgi-Center is 1-800-642-1011.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like my friend said that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a second, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. Sorry about that. Okay, you’re only 13 right now?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You do either have which one of the centers — okay, the Canollis SurgiCenter or the Women’s Health Center they have some it where you can go in and talk to a doctor, and they can give you a waiver letter if they feel that you are capable of making this decision.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you wouldn’t have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or you can come in here and —

CALLER: How do I know that?

CLINIC: Well, you don’t until after the doctor talks with you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or you can come in here, and our nurse can talk with you. Now the only thing is, if you come in here you have to go to Canollis SurgiCenter.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And what we can do is, you can come in, talk with our nurse. The office visit is $24.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And then there would be an $8 fee for your pregnancy test.

CALLER: Is it okay if like my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Yeah. That would be fine.

CALLER: Because —

CLINIC: Everything here is strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You don’t have to have parental consent. This would be basically just to come in and talk to the nurse, and she would do your waiver letter if she feels that you are capable of making the decision about the abortion on your end.

CALLER: Does she ever say no or anything?

CLINIC: As far as I know, she hasn’t to anybody.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you know, she makes a judgment after talking to you about the pregnancy and everything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or the other option is to tel one of your parents.

CALLER: Oh, I can’t tell my parents because like — well, my — the problem is they hate my boyfriend. Like, he’s 22, and we’re in love and we’re going to get married, but they hate him because they think he’s too old for me, so they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Okay. I don’t have a nurse in until Tuesday.

CALLER: Okay. But you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: What time do you get out of school?

CALLER: I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Okay. Our nurse is in between noon and 5:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Could you get in anytime between those times?

CALLER: Yeah. I’d have to call him and see when he could bring me, but, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, and then just give us a call back and we’ll get you scheduled in for Tuesday.

CALLER: Well, do you guys — like my other question is, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do, but they couldn’t — they will also if you want to they’ll start you on that after your procedure.

CALLER: Oh. But does anybody have to know about birth control?

CLINIC: No. Everything’s strictly confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So just give me a call back, and we’ll get you scheduled in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thanks.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Umm, bye.

(phone clicks)
