CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Federal Way. This is Kathy. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. We provide abortion services on Wednesdays only.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that normally cost?

CLINIC: Our usual and customary fee is about $650. You may be eligible for a discount based on income and family size.

CALLER: Oh. The thing is, I’m going to be — I’ll be 14 like later on this month, and I don’t have any income. But my boyfriend’s 22. He has a job. Could he just pay for it?

CLINIC: Um-hum. So are you — how far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just — the main reason why I’m worried about all this is because I haven’t had my period since like December 26. So. We’re just really worried.

CLINIC: Where is my little calendar? Have you had a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, that’s probably the first thing you should do is come in and get a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: They’re free.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: So if you want to come in today, we’re doing them until 4:00 on a walk-in basis.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody if I was there for that?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But would you really have to, or —

CLINIC: No. Not in the state of Washington.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so what time are you doing the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Until 4:00.

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control today?

CLINIC: Well, we would have to schedule an appointment for you to be seen by the clinician.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s prescription drug, so you have to be seen by a medical provider, and we don’t do that on a walk-in basis.

CALLER: Oh. But if I was on birth control, would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Yeah?

CALLER: (laughs) I just have a lot of questions. Are you guys open tomorrow if I can’t come in today?

CLINIC: No, we’re not. We’ll be open again on Monday, and we do that from 9:30 to 1;00 and then again from 2:00 to 5:00.

CALLER: Okay. Are you open like during the lunch hour?

CLINIC: We are open, but we don’t do that during the lunch hour because our employees need to go to lunch too.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay> Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum. Bye bye.
