CLINIC: Good morning, Commonwealth Women.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Locals, you’re awake during the procedure, $290; general, you’re asleep during the procedure, $475.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that’s by appointment only.

CALLER: I’m just worried. My friend told me that since I’m going to be 14 later on this month, you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No. We need parental notification. That means your parents have to come with you.

CALLER: Is there any way around that?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: Because I can’t tell them at all. If they found out — they know my boyfriend; they just don’t like him. But if they found out that we were having sex, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: We still need parental notification. It’s the law.

CALLER: Well, could I come in for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: You certainly can. We do —

CALLER: But would you have to tell my parents then?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. Urine pregnancy tests cost $5; blood tests cost $25.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and we don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. He said he would pay for everything. But would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for everything?

CLINIC: No, he wouldn’t.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control the same day?

CLINIC: You would have to set a GYN appointment with our nurse practitioner.

CALLER: Oh, all right. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Only if you told them.

CALLER: Really? Okay. All right. So there’s no way that I wouldn’t be able to do this without my parents knowing?

CLINIC: For the termination your parents need to know.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: I can’t advise you on that.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can talk to anyone who answers the phone.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, are they as nice as you?

CLINIC: I believe so, yes. We have a nice group of people here.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hmm. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can you hold, please?

CALLER: Yeah. (pause)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, do you know how much that costs or anything?

CLINIC: It depends how far along you are. When was the first day of your last normal period?

CALLER: It was like around the first week in December.

CLINIC: December 5, December 6th? When about, hon?

CALLER: Probably like the 5th.

CLINIC: That’s going to make you right now about two weeks along. Do you — how old are you?

CALLER: Like, well I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know that in Virginia you need parental consent?

CALLER: Oh. Is there any way not to do that? Because like my parents can’t find out because — well my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married and everything, but they think he’s too old for me, and they would totally flip out.

CLINIC: Your boyfriend’s 22?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on a second, hon. Let me see what else I can get you for, okay?

CALLER: Okay. (pause)

CLINIC: Honey?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. You can go to DC and there’s no parental notification laws.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. You want to get their number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: It’s 202-347-8512.

CALLER: Okay. And it’s all right like if my boyfriend takes me and everything?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: And they wouldn’t have to say anything?

CLINIC: Well, I’ll give you a heads up.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Your boyfriend’s quite older than you. Quite. And it’s very illegal for him to date you.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: I don’t understand. How is that illegal?

CLINIC: Because, honey, you’re not 18, and he’s over 18.

CALLER: Yeah, but we’re in love. I don’t understand what you mean.

CLINIC: There’s a law against that, honey. Considering how older he is.

CALLER: Is there anything — like would he get in trouble?

CLINIC: Yeah, he could.

CALLER: What would happen?

CLINIC: He can go to jail.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there —

CLINIC: Take care of the first thing. If you want to go ahead and get an abortion, give them a call and make an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: He can go with you, but if anybody does ask you, in the future you could possibly get, you know, messy because he is significantly older than you.

CALLER: Oh. Well, what should I do?

CLINIC: I really can’t answer that question because, I mean, if I give you an answer you may not like it and then he could possibly go to jail, especially if your parents press charges against him.

CALLER: So but they — like — no one would tell my parents though, would they?

CLINIC: I wouldn’t tell.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Say that I wasn’t pregnant, would I be able to get birth control there at your office?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can get birth control at our office no matter how old you are.

CALLER: Oh, you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t tell on my boyfriend?

CLINIC: Nope. Well, that would be — well, (sighs) — look, the problem is that because your boyfriend is so significantly older than you and the fact that you are under the age of 16 — now if you were 16 and he was what he is, that’s a whole other story. But since you’re 14 it makes it even worse.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Yes. So I mean, I’m not familiar with the Virginia laws, but it would be determined by the, one of our nurses if she did see you —

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: — if you’re in a bad situation. Now we won’t deny you birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you can come in anytime and get birth control, but I need you to start using birth control.

CALLER: Oh. Well, so like if I didn’t say anything it would be all right?

CLINIC: Yes. Now, my question is, that I have to ask you.

CALLER: Oh, you do?

CLINIC: Huh? I have to ask you these questions since we’re on the phone. Why don’t you make that appointment at the downtown clinic. How long have you and your boyfriend been dating?

CALLER: Like about a year.

CLINIC: Can you hold, please?

CALLER: Yeah.

CALLER: Yeah. I was talking to someone.

CLINIC: You asked me. I’m back.

CALLER: I’m sorry. My friend’s mom came in and we had to hang up.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your primary concern is this, is that if you do not want to keep the pregnancy to term you need to facilitate that soon before the price gets too big, okay?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Then — I want to give you a heads up though. I do not know what the clinician’s going to do when she does talk to you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So, the best thing is to always be honest. But if your parents do discover that he is dating you and his age, since you were dating as young as you were and I’m assuming correctly that you guys have been having sex for awhile —

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: — it can be a big thing. Not only could it be a big thing but it is a very big thing.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So he — I mean, I’m not passing judgment.

CALLER: Um-hum.

CLINIC: But his age dating you, the fact that you’re 14, no matter how in love you are is not a very good thing.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you have to tell anybody or anything?

CLINIC: I’m not going to tell anybody. I don’t know your name, whatever.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But if your parents ever found out, he will go to jail.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it okay if I call you back? Because I don’t know what to do, but —

CLINIC: My name is Samantha, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Call me back, okay?

CALLER: Okay, thanks.
