CLINIC: Sioux Falls Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: I can barely hear you. Can you talk a little louder?

CLINIC: Sioux Falls Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Ho. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: 447 for under 12 weeks.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: By your last menstrual period.

CALLER: Okay. Well, that was January 15th.

CLINIC: (Pause) You’re about eight weeks right now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We’re booking into the first week in April though. Keep that in mind.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what does that mean?

CLINIC: That means you’ll be plus three weeks, so you’d be about 10-11 weeks by the time we could get you in.

CALLER: Okay. So would that be enough time?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m really worried. My boyfriend said that he would pay cash for everything. But the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. By South Dakota law, one of your parents need to be notified unless you get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there any way not to have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: If you get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Well, what is that?

CLINIC: You need to make an appointment to come into the clinic and get some counseling about the judicial bypass; then you need to make an appointment with the court to meet with a judge. And he or she needs to find you mature enough to make this decision on your own without parental notification.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: I don’t think it cost anything.

CALLER: Oh. Well, does the judge usually say it’s all right?

CLINIC: It depends.

CALLER: Okay. Me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for it all, would he have to sign anything or have his name on any forms?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So would I be able to come in there for a pregnancy test just to make sure beforehand, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: If you want to come in for a pregnancy test, you can, but if you’ve already taken one and it’s positive, then you’re pregnant.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t taken one.

CLINIC: Okay. Then you need to take a pregnancy test before you do anything.

CALLER: So I could come in there for that?

CLINIC: You can. It cost $15 here. It may be easier for you just to take one at home.

CALLER: Well, I would rather come there and make sure that it was done right.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s a urine sample, just to let you know that’s the same as you would get at a pharmacy, just to let you know that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Only if you get an annual exam done here.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: It can cost anywhere between 75 to $100.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would you guys have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: It’s just me and my boyfriend don’t want to have to go through all this again, so we were wanting to get birth control.

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can call and talk to anyone up here in the front. Anyone can answer your questions.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Is that all?

CALLER: Yeah, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay. Bye.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Sioux Falls Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much that cost?

CLINIC: It cost $447 for under 12 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far —

CLINIC: You go by your last menstrual period.

CALLER: Well, my last period was December 14th.

CLINIC: Did you want to set up an appointment, or you’re just looking for information?

CALLER: Well, I was just actually wanting to ask a couple of questions. I’m just scared because my friend told me that since — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just do that, and no one would have to know anything?

CLINIC: By law, your parents do have to know. At least one of your parents have to be notified unless you go through a judicial bypass.

CALLER: Well, what’s that?

CLINIC: You have to meet with a judge. You have to make an appointment, meet with a judge, and he or she has to find you mature enough to make this decision on your own.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do they ever say no?

CLINIC: I don’t know. I really don’t know.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do I need to get a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: I don’t think so. First what you need to do is come into the clinic here and meet with a nurse for just some information that she can give you about judicial bypass and stuff. There’s a bunch of forms you have to bring to the judge and stuff.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: My boyfriend has to come with me because I wouldn’t have any other way to get there. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. Could I get a pregnancy test there then?

CLINIC: Have you taken one?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You haven’t taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: How do you know you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I don’t. I just haven’t had my period, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Okay. We do pregnancy tests here. They do cost $15. But if you wanted to get one done here, you sure can.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there for that?

CLINIC: Not for that, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Anyone of any age can come in for like family planning stuff. Abortion, by law, under 18, parents have to be notified.

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: If you got an annual exam done here, yeah.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, does anybody have to know about birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Again. The only thing that parents have to know about is abortion. That’s the only thing. You can get anything else done here except abortion. Parents need to know. That’s South Dakota law.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So my boyfriend can come with me and that’s all right?

CLINIC: Yeah. If he needs to drive you, he can just sit in the waiting room. That’s fine.

CALLER: Okay. He’s just worried that — he just doesn’t want anybody to know about us.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, confidentiality is kind of key here. I mean, we don’t call anyone or anything usually.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: The thing is, I can’t drive. So could he come and get the birth control?

CLINIC: If you wanted to get birth control?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.

CALLER: Could he pick it up?

CLINIC: As long as you called and said my boyfriend’s coming. He’s going to pick up three months worth of pills, that’s fine. That’s no big deal, no.

CALLER: I need to call and talk to him, and see when we can come in. Can I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can talk to anyone up here at the front desk. Anyone can answer questions or tell you about the same thing.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, all right. It’s just you’re really nice, and I would just rather talk to you.

CLINIC: Sure. Everyone here is really nice that answers the phone. People may be short with you sometimes, but that’s just because — if we get really busy you may be put on hold a couple times. But anyone up here — everyone’s nice here. Anyone can answer your questions.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Is that all you needed to know?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Rapid City.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: The only place in South Dakota is in Sioux Falls.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Their 800 number is 1-800-314-7216.

CALLER: Okay. My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and nobody would have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way not to tell my parents? Because they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, you’d have to go before a judge.

CALLER: Okay. What do I do for that?

CLINIC: Call the courthouse and the state’s attorney’s office, and tell them you want to do a judicial bypass. And you will need to see a judge, a sympathetic, pro-choice judge.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay. Well, do the judges usually say yes?

CLINIC: Well, if you go before them, they’ll adjudicate you, and say that you’re old enough.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Well, do you know if I have to get a lawyer for that or anything?

CLINIC: A what?

CALLER: A lawyer.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No, no. No, no. Just call the courthouse and tell them you want to see a pro-choice judge.

CALLER: A pro-choice judge?

CLINIC: Um-hmm. That’s all there is to it.

CALLER: Okay. Could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Well, have you already done one?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Then why do you think you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had my period since December 14th, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Oh. Well, you can by a pregnancy test over the counter. They’re pretty accurate. They’re a lot less expensive than here.

CALLER: I would just rather someone else do it.

CLINIC: Well, it’s $15 here. And it’s a walk-in procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there for that though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: I would really want my boyfriend to be there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Well, yeah, sure.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about him?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.
