OFFICE OF DR. BURNS – ABORTION SURGERY CENTER

TAPE – 835

(Dialing, phone ringing 3x)

CLINIC: Dr. Burns’ office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: It’s $400, and our limit is 12 weeks in the pregnancy.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: Do you know when your last menstrual period was?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: And it was a normal period for you?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Probably about six to seven right now.

CALLER: Okay. So that would be all right then?

CLINIC: Um-hmm. As long as you only missed one or two periods, you’re fine. But if you miss three periods, you’re too far.

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it all, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, ma’am. You’ll need to bring a parent with you to sign the consent form.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Yeah. We can’t see anybody under 18 without their parent’s consent.

CALLER: Is there any way not to have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: That’s the only way we could do it, hon.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Because I can’t tell my parents at all. Well, is there anyplace else I could go?

CLINIC: Not that I’m aware of. Yeah. The law requires that anybody under 18, any kind of medical attention needs to have a parent’s consent.

CALLER: So what should I do then?

CLINIC: I would talk to my mother (chuckle).

CALLER: But I can’t talk to her. I mean, she doesn’t ever listen to me. Both my parents don’t ever understand anything.

CLINIC: Are you in school?

CALLER: Well, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: You’re homeschooled?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: What about calling Planned Parenthood and maybe talking to a counselor there?

CALLER: Would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: Yeah. That’s what I’m saying. They could maybe help you talk to your parents.

CALLER: Oh. I don’t know.

Well, I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would I be able to get a pregnancy test there just to make sure I am before I talk to them.

CLINIC: Yeah. You could come here for a test or you can go to Planned Parenthood or the Health Department.

CALLER: How much does it cost if I go to you guys?

CLINIC: We charge $10 for a test.

CALLER: Okay. But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh.

CALLER: Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: No, we actually don’t, unless you’re a patient, unless we see you; then we’ll give you some birth control. But like I was saying, Planned Parenthood or the Health Department would help you with that. If you weren’t pregnant, then they could get you started on birth control pills so you don’t get pregnant.

CALLER: But would they have to tell anyone if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: No. I would start with Planned Parenthood if I were you. Because they can help you out. At least you’ll have somebody to talk to. The Health Department will just do the test and that’s it. But I would go to Planned Parenthood, and they can help you.

CALLER: Okay. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Wendy.

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: All righty, hon.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Reproductive Services. This is Veronica. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: Yes, I do. Do you know how far along? Do you know when the first day of your last period was?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. If you are between 7 and 12 weeks, it’s 405. If you are 13 to 14 weeks, it’s 490, and 15 to 17 weeks is 630, and that’s as far as we go here; otherwise, we can refer you somewhere else.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. So where am I then if my last period was January 3rd?

CLINIC: Well, can you hold on just one moment? And I’ll try to find out.

CALLER: Sure.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. You are probably close to eight weeks, eight-and-a-half, maybe nine.

CALLER: So how much would that cost then?

CLINIC: 405. The first available appointment I have is March 20th.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to schedule an appointment?

CALLER: Well, the thing is, I was just actually wanting to ask, I’m going to be 14 later on this month — on the 19th — and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. I wish we could. With the new law that Governor Keating passed in Oklahoma, all minors coming in for an abortion have to have a parental consent, even if you are an emancipated minor.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I know. So you might want me to refer you out of state, anyway. Actually, there’s a place in Dallas that will handle minors without parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: You want the number?

CALLER: Yes, please.

CLINIC: It’s 800-727-2255.

CALLER: Okay. Could I come there for a pregnancy test just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yes. And you could also — well, actually, the only thing we can — hold on just one moment, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Are you holding for the nurse?

CALLER: For Veronica.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Hold on just a minute.

(Pause)

CLINIC: May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was talking to Veronica.

CLINIC: Yes. She got busy with somebody else.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: I’ll be happy to help you.

CALLER: Well, I was wondering if I could get a pregnancy test without my parents finding out. Because I’m going to be 14 later on this month. My boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it?

CLINIC: A pregnancy test or an abortion?

CALLER: A pregnancy test.

CLINIC: You can come in tomorrow, 8:30 to 3:30. And if you are two weeks late on your period, it’s a free test.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t had my period since January 3rd. That’s why I was calling, to get an abortion.

CLINIC: Well, you can’t get an abortion without your parents’ permission.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But if you want to run a pregnancy test, we’ll be happy to do that.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay. You can come in tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay. What time are you guys open?

CLINIC: We are open at 8:30. Come on around 10:00 or so.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? We can run the pregnancy test. Now, you cannot have an abortion without the permission of your parents.

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: No, you cannot.

CALLER: Oh. You guys don’t do birth control?

CLINIC: No. Just for our parents. That’s all.

CALLER: Well, could I become a patient then?

CLINIC: No. You have to have an abortion to be a patient.

CALLER: Oh, okay. And I have to tell my parents before —

CLINIC: Yes, you do have to tell your parents. I’m sorry.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So when I come in for a pregnancy test, nobody has to know anything?

CLINIC: Well, you’re coming to a clinic. Nobody has to know anything. We won’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. This Shelley (sp). May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anybody that would?

CLINIC: Yes, I can give you a number to call. His name is Dr. Burns.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a second. The number is 329-8120.

CALLER: My friend actually told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever, and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: That will be something that Dr. Burns would have to decide. We don’t work out of his office, so you would probably have to ask his office about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test to see?

CLINIC: Yes. You can do that, walk-in and it’s $8.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: No (chuckle).

CALLER: I would really like my boyfriend to be there. Is that okay?

CLINIC: That would be fine.

CALLER: And nobody would ask anything about us, and they wouldn’t have to know about us at all?

CLINIC: Let me just ask you this? Are you emancipated?

CALLER: No. What is that?

CLINIC: Like certified as an adult.

CALLER: Not that I know of.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Hold on for just a second.

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hi.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Yeah, you can just walk in. You don’t need an appointment. Now you would need to be at least 14 days pregnant. Now think back at the time that you’re worried about that you could have gotten pregnant. Has that been at least 14 days ago?

CALLER: I think so. But I just haven’t had had a period since December 14th, so I don’t know.

CLINIC: And have you ever missed your periods before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: And did you have unprotected intercourse, sex?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: How about in January?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you use any type of birth control?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: So yeah, you can go ahead and come on in. You need to fill out some paperwork. You don’t need an appointment. And we’re open until 5 tonight. Tomorrow we’ll be open until 5. We close between 12:30 and 1 for lunch.

CALLER: Okay. So I could come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Yeah. They’re $8.

CALLER: And nobody has to know about anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if my boyfriend’s there with me and everything?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Casey.

CALLER: Oh, okay. If I came in for a pregnancy and it said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. No, not at all.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right if my boyfriend picked them up? Because I can’t drive to get there.

CLINIC: You’ll need to come in for the visit so that you can get the prescription for the meds prescribed to you. But then after that, anybody can pick them up for you that you give permission to.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: What was that other lady talking about, about being emancipated?

CLINIC: Well, I’ll have you sign some paperwork so that will take care of that.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Okay.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anybody that does?

CLINIC: All we’re doing is asking people to just look in a phone book.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, do you guys do the pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But it doesn’t really matter. You’re going to have to have one there when you go to the clinic anyway. If that’s your option, then you’re going to have to have that for the clinic.

CALLER: Could I get that there and then take it over there? Could I go to where you’re at?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: It’s just my friend told me it would be best to go to you guys.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. Yeah. We don’t offer the abortion though, but yeah.

CALLER: Do you have to be a certain age for that? My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of that?

CLINIC: We would have to tell your parents what?

CALLER: That I was there.

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents anything.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: I would just feel better if my boyfriend was there with me. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: You wouldn’t have to ask anything about him? He’s just worried that you guys would be asking a lot of questions.

CLINIC: About him? Why would we need to know about him?

CALLER: I don’t know.

CLINIC: He’s not filling out any paperwork or anything, is he?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. Would he have to?

CLINIC: No, he doesn’t have to. That’s my point. He doesn’t have to do anything but just sit there (chuckle).

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So no. I don’t have to know anything about him, or your parents don’t get to know anything or whatever.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah. But that would be something that you will have to do with the nurse whenever you come in. If she’s not here, I’ll give you her schedule.

CALLER: Well, how long does it take to do that?

CLINIC: Do what?

CALLER: Talk to the nurse and get birth control?

CLINIC: About 30 minutes. Hassle-free.

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: I said it’s hassle-free.

CALLER: Well, if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope. We don’t have to tell your parents anything. We are strictly confidential. When you come in here, it’s you. Your parents don’t have to know anything. The only way they have to know is if you tell them. They can’t call here and get any information about you.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I don’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: Right. I understand. And we are not allowed to tell anyone anything. And if you feel someone’s done that, then you have the right to take action. Your information is confidential, no matter your age or anything. Okay?

CALLER: You’ve been just so helpful. What was your name?

CLINIC: Have you had a test?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, ma’am, we don’t. We refer out for that procedure.

CALLER: All right. Do you have a number then?

CLINIC: Excuse me? A number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Uh-huh– 329-8120.

CALLER: All right. Do you know if they would have to tell my parents? My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that they would have to tell my parents I’m having an abortion.

CLINIC: You do have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is there anything that he could do instead?

CLINIC: Nope. You’d have to go out of state. Let me give you a couple of phone numbers.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I can give you a number for one in Dallas.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s 214-373-1868.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, could I come there for a pregnancy test then?

CLINIC: Yes. You can walk in for those, and they’re $8.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, does anybody have to know that I was there?

CLINIC: No. You can come tomorrow for that if you’d like.

CALLER: It’s just my boyfriend doesn’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, if I come in for a pregnancy test, if it was negative, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Well, would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. You can consent for yourself with that. And it would be $12 plus the cost of the pills, which is 13 a month.

CALLER: Okay. I just have so many questions. If I think of anything else, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You sure can. My name’s Amy.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
