CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood, West Islip. Lisa speaking. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Not in this particular center, but in our Smithtown center.

CALLER: Okay. Do you have the number for that?

CLINIC: I do. But I can tell you now, before they allow you to make an appointment, they do want you to have a pregnancy test and counseling visit. And that you can have done at any one of our centers, the one closest to you.

CALLER: Is it cool if I go there?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Is it cool if I go where you’re at?

CLINIC: Sure. Well, what town are you in?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know when I could come in. But I would have to talk to my boyfriend, and he’s going to drive me.

CLINIC: Okay. But what town do you live in?

CALLER: Oh. I live in Huntington.

CLINIC: Huntington is closed today. They’re having their calls forwarded here. But I do have their schedule for the next two days. Speak to your boyfriend. If you’d like to make an appointment, just call me back and I can make that appointment.

CALLER: Is it all right if I — I don’t want anyone to see me in Huntington. Is it okay if I go there where you’re at?

CLINIC: You mean today?

CALLER: Well, I guess. I’d have to talk to my boyfriend.

CLINIC: The only thing I have today here in West Islip, I have a 5:30 or an 8:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you want to do that, then just give me a call back.

CALLER: Okay. They wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No. You do not need parental consent.

CALLER: If my parents found out, they would flip. My boyfriend’s 22. We’re going to get married, but if they found out that we were having sex, they would flip.

CLINIC: We don’t need parental consent.

CALLER: They think he’s too old for me, but I don’t know.

CLINIC: Hold on one sec, hon.

CALLER: Okay.

CALLER: Do you know if there’s an age requirement?

CLINIC: No, there’s not.

CALLER: Not at all? Because I’ll be 14 in March. And that’s still like all right?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Say I wasn’t pregnant after they did the pregnancy test, would you guys be able to do birth control?

CLINIC: Absolutely.

CALLER: And nobody would have to know about that?

CLINIC: No. For any planning services, that’s the New York State law. You do not need parental consent.

CALLER: So nobody would find out at all?

CLINIC: Absolutely not.

CALLER: Okay. Is it cool if I call you back?

CLINIC: Sure. Call me back and let me know what you’d like to do.

CALLER: What was your name?
