CLINIC: Dr. Cousins’ office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Well, that varies. Are you covered by insurance or Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. And how far pregnant might you be?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period for a while. My last period was January 15th.

CLINIC: Okay. And how of ten do you usually have periods?

CALLER: Usually every month. I mean, every once in a while it’s like maybe a week late, but never this late.

CLINIC: Do you know your blood type?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Have you ever been pregnant before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, the fee is either going to be 390 or 420, and that depends on your blood type.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my other question was, I’m going to be 14 later on this month. I’m going to be 14 on the 19th. And my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No, that’s not true.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t have to.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I don’t need to do any of that. This is New York State, and there is no parental notification.

CALLER: So it’s all right if my boyfriend takes care of everything?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Okay. Well, we were talking about all this. And we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he would pay cash for everything. Would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms?

CLINIC: No, but you do to be our patient.

CALLER: Well, would his name have to be on any forms or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. What should I do? Do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: That’s all included.

CALLER: Oh, really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: No, not that same day.

CALLER: Well, where could I get birth control?

CLINIC: If you have an abortion and want birth control afterwards, then we can do that. If you are not pregnant and just want birth control, then we have to set an appointment to see you, and do a pap test and all that.

CALLER: Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Well, we couldn’t do that the same day. You’d have to set up a separate appointment for that.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just trying to figure out how much money we should bring.

CLINIC: Well, I told you, either 390 or 420.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Robin.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And you could call me back. I can’t get you in until next week.

CALLER: Okay. Would that be enough time you think?

CLINIC: We do abortions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

CALLER: What time?

CLINIC: By appointment.

CALLER: Well, would that be enough time you think?

CLINIC: Enough time for what?

CALLER: To make an appointment later on.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: All right. So thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Dr. Cousins Office.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much that costs?

CLINIC: Are you covered by any insurance or Medicaid?

CALLER: Well, no. My boyfriend said that he would pay for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if you are covered by insurance most of the time that does cover. So like if you want to take his money, go shopping, turn it into your insurance, you could do that.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, the thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. So my boyfriend is 22, so he said that he would take care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay. You don’t have to tell your parents, okay? First of all, you don’t have to have your parents’ permission in New York state. When was your last period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. Dr. Cousins does abortions here in the office three days a week.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: One visit. You would be here quite awhile, about four hours.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And what else would you like to know?

CALLER: Well, it’s just —

CLINIC: If you’re paying for it — you don’t know your blood type, do you?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. If you would come in between now and the 21st, the most it would be would be $390.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? There’s a chance it would be less than that, but I don’t know your blood type. That’s part of our lab work that we do.

CALLER: Well, I haven’t taken a pregnancy test yet. But do you think that there’d be any way that I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: Well, you’ve missed your period.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Twice.

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Has that ever happened?

CALLER: Well, not really.

CLINIC: Okay. Any tenderness in your breasts, any nausea, any smell problems like certain things make you kind of want to gag?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Do you go to the bathroom a lot more than usual?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You have none of those symptoms.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Well, there’s a chance you couldn’t be. Are you on any new kind of diet or exercise program?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Any medications?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Well, I’d say it’s 50/50.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Sure. Where are you coming from?

CALLER: And I’m visiting my friend in Vestal. So.

CLINIC: Do you know where we are?

CALLER: Well, she does, so. But if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: We would do that at a separate time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because we would have to examine you.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we just can’t hand them out to everybody. You know, there are some health risks involved.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Depending on your family history and such. So you would have to be examined first. But depending on what the test results shows, we could set that up too.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay for everything. He just — we just don’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. So you guys wouldn’t tell anybody that we were there?

CLINIC: No. Why would we? What would we get out of that?

CALLER: Oh, I don’t know. He just —

CLINIC: No doctor’s office can release information no matter what kind it is, without your permission.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Whether you have a nose job or an appendectomy or open heart.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You know? If you choose not for anybody to know, they cannot release that — only to your insurance company and still with your permission.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just have a lot of questions I can’t think of right now, but —

CLINIC: Okay. Well, write them all down.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: When did you think you’d want to have the pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Do you guys do it on Saturday or just Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday?

CLINIC: We’ll be here on Saturday. Actually I’ll be here between 10 and 2.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: That would probably be best. Well, what was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Robin.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? If you chose to come in today, tomorrow or Thursday, come in like say after 4:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: My boyfriend works until 5:00 though, so.

CLINIC: So he has to bring you? The pregnancy test is free.

CALLER: Okay. He’d be the only way I could get there.

CLINIC: Okay. I was just thinking if you wanted to come in sooner and there was a chance to make you an appointment for this week. But that’s up to you.

CALLER: Can I make an appointment over the phone after I talk to him?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. Let me call him and call you back. Is that all right?

CLINIC: We couldn’t make the appointment until you had the pregnancy test done. You don’t need an appointment for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It would be like after 4:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
