(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood. Lisa speaking.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. We refer you to Plattsburgh.

CALLER: To where?

CLINIC: Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Oh. Do you have that number?

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s 561-4430. But we do do the pregnancy test and all the exams that need to be done before the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — like I’m just worried about all this because like, well my friend told me that since like — well I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it?

CLINIC: No. We don’t need any parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah, so you don’t — we won’t say anything to your parents unless you tell us to say something to your parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: So, well, it’s just, the thing is that me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we didn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. But he said that he was going to pay for everything. Would that be all right if he was there?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine. You can have whoever you want.

CALLER: Okay. But would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. We don’t need anybody’s signature but yours.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, so what time do you normally do like pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: We can do a pregnancy — I can do a pregnancy test for you tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Then we can do an exam for you on Monday, but we can do it all on Monday if you want to just come in the one time.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see, but —

CLINIC: Monday and Thursdays are the days that we’re here to do exams.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: What time on Monday?

CLINIC: Monday I’ve only got one left — 4:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And on Thursday I’m not quite sure what’s left on the schedule that day.

CALLER: Well, could I go ahead and be penciled in on like the Monday, 4:00 one?

CLINIC: You want to schedule the Monday? Okay. Have you ever been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. We’re going to have to take down some information from you, and I’ve got a girl training that I want her to work on the computer.

CALLER: Well, can I ask you one quick question?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there too?

CLINIC: Yep, as long as you — we do the exam and everything, yeah. Yeah.

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Nope. Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just really worried of —

CLINIC: Nope. Nope.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So can you hold on a second?

CALLER: Okay. Well, are you there?

CLINIC: (pause)

CLINIC: Hi. This is Barb. I’m the one that’s training.

CALLER: Okay. What was the name of the lady that I was just talking to?

CLINIC: That was Lisa.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And I’m Barb. And I’m going to need your name?

CALLER: Oh, well, it’s Christine.

CLINIC: Hmm?

CALLER: It’s Christine.

CLINIC: And your last name is?

CALLER: Smith.

CLINIC: And your first name is Christine. With a C, Christine?

CALLER: A C-H.

CLINIC: C-H. And middle initial?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Pardon?

CALLER: What did you ask?

CLINIC: Middle initial.

CALLER: Oh. M.

CLINIC: And your address?

CALLER: What was that?

CLINIC: Your address?

CALLER: Oh, well, I wasn’t wanting to actually — could I give you my boyfriend’s address? It’s just, he’s moving to a new apartment, and I don’t know it yet, but we wanted to use that address.

CLINIC: Hold on just a minute. Christine?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: What’s your date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Did you ever call and make an appointment in Plattsburgh before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Because we’ve got you in the computer under Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Huh.

CLINIC: Yeah. Hang on a second. Let me just pull up and see what information they’ve got. Okay? Hang on. 3/19/88?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I have Redford, New York. Is that right?

CALLER: Well, I don’t think so. I mean, I’ve never been there.

CLINIC: You’ve never lived in Redford, New York?

CALLER: No. I’m in Tupper Lake. Well, when I went to get my Social Security card they said there were actually a lot of Christine Smiths. So I don’t know.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s your middle initial?

CALLER: M.

CLINIC: M?

CALLER: Yep.

CLINIC: Yeah. Same thing.

CALLER: I don’t know. That’s just weird. Where is that place that, that appointment?

CLINIC: Redford?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Plattsburgh office? Is that what you’re asking?

CALLER: Yeah. Where is that?

CLINIC: It’s on Brinkerhoff Street. It’s Planned Parenthood in Plattsburgh.

CALLER: Oh. Huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we’ll put you in under a new patient for us.

CALLER: Okay. My boyfriend was calling some places, but could he make an appointment for me?

CLINIC: I can’t tell if it was an appointment made in Plattsburgh, but do you think he called and made the appointment in Plattsburgh?

CALLER: I don’t know. I mean, he told me to do all the calling, but —

CLINIC: Who lives in Redford, New York?

CALLER: No one that I know.

CLINIC: He doesn’t?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: He doesn’t? You guys live in Tupper?

CALLER: I live in Tupper, Tupper Lake.

CLINIC: Okay. We’ll just add you in here. It’s no big deal. Let’s see here. Okay. I’m going to give you back to Barb and she’ll get the rest of the information from you. Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Yeah, we have to have an address because, you can give us your home address. We won’t send anything to you.

CALLER: Oh, well, I just really didn’t want to do that.

CLINIC: We need to have it. So we need to have some address.

CALLER: Well, let me talk to my boyfriend and see. Is that all right if I call and talk to him and call you back?

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a minute. (pause)

CLINIC: Christine?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Where is your boyfriend moving to?

CALLER: He’s getting an apartment, so.

CLINIC: Where?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. He hasn’t decided between the two, but. I don’t know which one he’s going to pick.

CLINIC: But is he staying in Tupper?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Do you know what road?

CALLER: Right now?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What’s Tupper Lake’s zip code?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. We just moved here.

CLINIC: Where’d you move from?

CALLER: From Texas.

CLINIC: Let’s see.

CALLER: I think my boyfriend actually might have a brother that lives in Plattsburgh.

CLINIC: In Plattsburgh?

CALLER: Yeah, maybe. I think that’s where he said he was.

CLINIC: Well, we’ll put Tupper Lake. When you come in we’ll need a street address.

CALLER: Okay. But would you guys mail anything to like my parents though?

CLINIC: No. If you don’t want us to mail anything, we’re not going to — we’re not going to contact your parents.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what would you need the address for then?

CLINIC: It’s the computer, for information.

CALLER: For what?

CLINIC: If we need to contact you. If there’s a problem we need to get ahold of you, how do we get ahold of you?

CALLER: Well, could I just — should I get like a cellphone then or something?

CLINIC: Well, if we send you mail, is it okay to send it in a blank envelope? Do your parents open your mail?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, I usually don’t get mail. They just open whatever comes.

CLINIC: Okay. So we won’t send mail. How about if we call you? Can we call and ask and say, can we talk to Christine? And if they say you’re not home, we’ll say okay, we’ll give her a call back later?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: We’re not going to say, this is Planned Parenthood calling.

CALLER: I don’t know. I just don’t know that that would be such a good idea. I’m just worried that — I just don’t want to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. Okay. So we’ll put down that we won’t contact your house at all. But then we need some place, someone to contact to let you know that we’re trying to get ahold of you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I give you all my boyfriend’s information, and then he could contact me through that?

CLINIC: That’s — yes. We can do that. If you have your boyfriend’s information.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m supposed to see him at lunch today. Could I just call you after that?

CLINIC: Well, yeah. Why don’t we do that? Get all his info — you know, his address and phone number, and then give us a call back, and that’s what we’ll put into the computer, and we won’t put any of your home stuff in there.

CALLER: Okay. Would there be anything else you would need besides all that?

CLINIC: I just need your Social Security number and like your date of birth and just some other information.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Just statistic reasons that you’ll know.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So just get that stuff, Christine, and give us a call back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(phone clicks)
