Tape – 099

(Dialing, phone ringing)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Yeah? How much does it cost to do that?

CLINIC: Three hundred.

CALLER: Three hundred? My friend told me you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? You guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: The problem is, I can’t tell my parents. My boyfriend’s 22, and we’re going to get married, and we love each other. But my parents hate him because they think he’s too old for me. So they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: No one finds out anything.

CALLER: All right. So like, do you —

CLINIC: (Sighing) You have to come in for a pregnancy test first.

CALLER: Okay. Is there any age requirement on that?

CLINIC: Is there what?

CALLER: Any age requirement?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March. Is that all right?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’ll be how old when?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Hold on one second, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: — Ciba and GHI. We also accept many other insurance plans. Just ask us, and we can help. Thank you for holding. We’ll take your call in just a moment.

Do you receive Medicaid? If so, Social Services will require you to sign up with an HMO or managed care provider for your medical services. But you still have the right to choose where you want to go for family planning. Whatever insurance you sign up for, your Medicaid or benefit card will work at Planned Parenthood. Even if you have another doctor, you can still come to us without a referral.

Do you have questions about birth control? We can review all options with you including the pill, Depo-Provera; Norplant, the IUD; the diaphragm; condoms; and spermicide. If you’ve had unprotected sex in the last 72 hours, you can still prevent a pregnancy. Please ask us for more information on emergency contraception when we return to the line. For more information about birth control and sexual health, call our toll free info line at 1-800-979-INFO.

Did you know that Planned Parenthood offered mid-life services for women going through menopause? We provide complete gynecological exams, breast exams, pap test, menopause counseling and hormone replacement therapy. Planned Parenthood understands the special healthcare needs of women of all ages. Thank you for holding. Your call is very important to us. We’ll be with you —

CLINIC: Sorry about that.

CALLER: Are you positive that you guys don’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Uh-uh, nobody.

CALLER: Okay. If it turns out that I’m not pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah? And you won’t have to tell anybody about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Is it okay if my boyfriend picks up the birth control?

CLINIC: When you get them?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah, but you have to have a complete exam.

CALLER: Oh. Okay.

CLINIC: So you want to come in for a pregnancy test first, then, right?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: What’s your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith.

CLINIC: And your first name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: Is there any way you can come in today?

CALLER: Well, no. I have to talk to my boyfriend, and he’s got to get the time off and everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you have a phone number we can have? His house or whatever?

CALLER: Well, I can call you back with the cell phone number.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: I have to ask him for it.

CLINIC: All right. When do you think he’ll have off of work to make the appointment?

CALLER: Well, he’d just have to schedule it with his boss or anything, so I don’t know. But I’d have to talk to him.

CLINIC: How about Friday?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Are you in school?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Are you in school?

CALLER: No, I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: Okay. How about Friday at 1:00?

CALLER: All right. I have to okay it with him, but yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. So if that’s all right with him, just come in Friday at 1:00. If you can’t, just call back to reschedule.

CALLER: Okay. Is it cool if I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: That’s fine. My name is Diane.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you sure you don’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Nope, nobody.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
