CLINIC: Thank for holding. This is Melissa. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Do you have insurance at all?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said he would pay cash for everything.

CLINIC: Okay. Because what needs to happen is, one, you have to have a pregnancy test, you have to have a full exam, and then the termination. So you’re looking at, with all of that, around $500.

CALLER: Okay. So you guys would do a pregnancy test first?

CLINIC: Yes, unless you’ve already had one done somewhere.

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd, so I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. So we should at least start with that. Have you been seen here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: And where are you calling from?

CALLER: I’m in Kaysville (unclear).

CLINIC: Kaysville? Okay. So you’re not too far away. What is your last name?

CALLER: It’s Carter. But I have a question really.

I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22, and he wanted to take care of it now. Would he be able to do that, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We wouldn’t tell your parents anyway, not unless you tell us to. But like if they called here, we wouldn’t be able to tell them anything.

CALLER: But would anybody else have to know?

CLINIC: No, no. Just you.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: It’s Carter you said?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: First name?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Middle initial?

CALLER: I don’t have one.

CLINIC: Address?

CALLER: Well —

CLINIC: Do you want to use his address?

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Do you want to use his address?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What’s his address?

CALLER: But I was actually wanting to ask some other questions too.

CLINIC: Sure. Go ahead.

CALLER: We were talking about all this, me and my boyfriend, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. But if he was paying for it all, would he have to sign anything or put his name on anything?

CLINIC: Is he paying cash?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: No. He can just give you the money, you hand it to us, and we wouldn’t even know about him at all.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yep. So that’s fine. What is his address? We need to have some sort of an address.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: We don’t care which one you use.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me talk to my friend and see if she’ll let me use hers.

CLINIC: Do you want to call back? We’re open until 5.

CALLER: Yeah. If I take the pregnancy first from you guys, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you?

CLINIC: Yes. We may have to make a separate appointment from that, but yes, you would be able to do that, yes.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, all right. Another thing is, I can’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the birth control?

CLINIC: You would actually have to come in for the visit to get the birth control. But then after that, like every month if he wanted to pick it up, as long as you let us know that it was okay for him to pick it up, then he could.

CALLER: Okay. But you’re absolutely sure that no one would have to know about anything?

CLINIC: No, not at all.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Let me call — how late are you going to be there?

CLINIC: We’re here until 5 today.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Um-hmm, we do.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: You have no insurance?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s going to pay for it.

CLINIC: Your boyfriend’s gonna?

CALLER: Yeah, he’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s going to be around 375 for the termination itself. There’s a few steps that you have to have before you have the termination, though.

Did you have a positive pregnancy test at a doctor’s office somewhere?

CALLER: No. I took one over the weekend, and it was positive.

CLINIC: Just a home test?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. So what we would do is we would bring you in to meet with a counselor. We do a pregnancy test because we have to have one on file. And then she goes over the options with you. And then if that is what you definitely want to do, she would set you up with that appointment.

CALLER: Okay. And there’s no age requirement to have an abortion or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Because I’ll be 14 in March. And that’s still okay?

CLINIC: Yep. That’s totally fine. Now, you’ve never been here before?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. What I have to do first is just get some information, put you in our computer. And then I can set you up with the counselor.

CALLER: Do you guys have to tell my parents or anybody?

CLINIC: Nope. We don’t tell anybody anything without your permission. Now also, if it’s okay to talk to your boyfriend about stuff, you might want to let us know here. And we can always put his name in the computer.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So if he ever called questioning anything, we know it’s okay to talk to him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So just make sure when you come in, you let us know that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Your last name?

CALLER: It’s Smith.

CLINIC: S-m-i-t-h. And your first name?

CALLER: Christine.

CLINIC: With a C-h?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: And your middle initial?

CALLER: It’s M.

CLINIC: An address?

CALLER: Well, I would have to ask my boyfriend what his address is. Is that okay if I can call you back?

CLINIC: Is that Scottsburg (unclear)?

CALLER: It’s in Redford.

CLINIC: Redford?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: I’m just going to put a zip code in, and that way we can get the rest after.

CALLER: If I end up not being pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. When you go in with a counselor, like I said, they’ll do a pregnancy test.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that birth control either?

CLINIC: No. Definitely not. We don’t say anything to anybody without you giving us the ok.

At your boyfriend’s address, if we ever have to contact you, is it okay to say that it’s Planned Parenthood calling or would you rather us not do that?

CALLER: No, they can’t find out at all. They don’t like my boyfriend at all because they think he’s too old for me. So there’s no way they can find out anything.

CLINIC: Your boyfriend’s address, is it his apartment or his parents?

CALLER: Well, it’s just like his house.

CLINIC: Do know your boyfriend’s address or we just don’t say at all?

CALLER: I don’t know what it is. I’d have to talk to him and get back to you.

CLINIC: Yep. Then you can let us know. Do you know his phone number?

CALLER: It’s his cell phone. I don’t know it.

CLINIC: You don’t know it? Okay, fine. We’ll just skip that for now.

Your Social Security number, do you know that?

CALLER: No, I don’t think I have one.

CLINIC: Okay. Your date of birth?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Now, are you in school?

CALLER: I’m homeschooled.

CLINIC: You’re homeschooled. So it won’t be a problem to get you in?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: What time do you get done during the day with homeschool?

CALLER: Just whenever.

CLINIC: I didn’t know if you had a set time.

CALLER: Is it okay if I call you back?

CLINIC: Call me back?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: To schedule it?

CALLER: Well, yeah. I’m at my friend’s house.

CLINIC: Okay. Yep, sure. So I have you in the computer right now. I’m here until 8:00 tonight.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Robin.

CALLER: Robin. All right. Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: All right. You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
