CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t. We confirm the pregnancy, and we can give you a referral.

CALLER: Okay. What do you need to do to confirm the pregnancy?

CLINIC: You need an appointment. You come in, pee in a cup. We do some paperwork. You’re on your way.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask a couple of questions?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: My friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: Well, we don’t perform them here.

CALLER: Okay. But do my parents have to know or anything?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. You would have to ask at where we refer you, at the termination facility.

CALLER: It’s just they can’t find out at all. Like, if they knew that — my boyfriend’s 22, and we’re planning on getting married. But my parents can’t stand him because they think he’s too old.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March. But if they found out we were having sex, they would be furious.

CLINIC: Actually, that’s considered statutory rape. You’re 14 and he’s 22.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: You need to come in and let us evaluate you.

CALLER: Okay. Would you guys have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Here? No. We don’t tell anybody anything.

CALLER: What if it turns out that I’m not pregnant after you guys do the test or whatever?

CLINIC: We would suggest you come back, become a patient with us, get you on some birth control.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell anybody about birth control at all?

CLINIC: No. The thing is, you shouldn’t be with somebody who’s 22, not at the age of 14.

CALLER: Well, he loves me. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Let me tell you something. I’ve been there, done that. I had my first child at the age of 14, and I was married before I got pregnant. But the guy was only three years older than me. Twenty-two and 14, he’s taking advantage of you. I don’t care what he tells you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we need to talk to you more. Don’t worry. We cannot talk to your parents without your consent.

CALLER: Okay. Would you have to talk to anybody at all, like besides my parents or anything?

CLINIC: I want to talk to you.

CALLER: Would he get in trouble or anything?

CLINIC: Not by me.

CALLER: Okay. Can I call you back?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Debbie.

CALLER: Debbie?

CLINIC: I’m the nurse here.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
