TAPE – 770

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: GYN Choices.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far are you?

CALLER: I don’t know. How do you know?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: By your date, you’re a little bit over nine weeks. That’s going to be 350.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: No, no, that’s not true.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. He could just take care of it, right?

CLINIC: No, that’s irrelevant. You could come in here by yourself. That’s irrelevant. And it’s a patient-doctor confidentiality. So even if your mom had found out and called here and wanted to verify that you were here, we wouldn’t be able to tell her anything without your consent.

CALLER: Me and my boyfriend were talking about this, and we don’t want anyone to know about him and me. Would he have to fill out any forms or anything if he was paying?

CLINIC: No. You would. There’s a form when you first come that you’ve got to fill out. It has like your last name, your first name, your middle name, sex, birth date, age, race, address, your home phone number, marital status, whether you’re employed. It’s just a little — do you know about your medical history like in your family?

CALLER: Oh, yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. As long as you know that, you’re fine.

CALLER: Oh, okay. So his name wouldn’t be on anything?

CLINIC: As long as you have the money and yourself, you’re fine. You don’t have to worry about anybody else besides you and your boyfriend knowing about it. Anybody else who knows will be somebody ya’ll tell.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: (Chuckle).

CALLER: Well, do you do the pregnancy test beforehand because I really haven’t had one of those yet.

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: That’s included. That’s free.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys? It’s just we don’t want to have to worry about this anymore.

CLINIC: Um, yeah.

CALLER: How much does it cost for birth control?

CLINIC: On the amount of time that you’re late, I think it’s more probable that you are pregnant.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But we do an ultra sound and all that. They give you pills and everything.

CALLER: So you’re sure that nobody would have to know about me and my boyfriend, and you wouldn’t have to tell my parents or anybody?

CLINIC: Positive. You wouldn’t have been the first. Don’t worry about it. If that makes you feel any better.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: When do you guys have appointments?

CLINIC: I could give you an appointment for Saturday.

CALLER: What time on Saturday?

CLINIC: 8 a.m.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I have to call my boyfriend to see if he can take me. But can I call him and call you back? What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Neika (ph).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What’s your name?

CALLER: Lisa?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Lisa.

CLINIC: Lisa?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: L-i-s-a?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: All right. I just wrote it down so I know what you’re talking about.

CALLER: Okay. So I’ll call you back.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Okay, bye.

CLINIC: Woman’s Medical.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: When was the first day of your last menstruation?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: Okay. The fee would be $350. And we do procedures on Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays only.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know– I’m kind of scared because like, well I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: You’re 14 years old?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 on the 19th. But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on a moment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Hello? You do need somebody, a relative, but that has to be over the age of 18.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just be there?

CLINIC: Well, your boyfriend is 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. When was the first day of your last menstruation?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Yeah. The fee would be $350. I could give you an appointment for Thursday or for Saturday.

CALLER: Is it all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?

CLINIC: Well, he’ll be in the waiting room.

CALLER: Okay. He was going to pay cash for everything, so that’s why he would have to be here. But would there be any other fees?

CLINIC: No, that’s it, $350 except the medication afterwards.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I could give you an appointment for Thursday or for Saturday. What day do you want?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him to see, but do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just I haven’t had one yet. But —

CLINIC: Okay. You haven’t done a pregnancy test yet?

CALLER: Well, no, but I’m just scared because I haven’t had my period since January 3, so I’m really worried.

CLINIC: Right. So just go to the pharmacy and get one of those pregnancy testing.

CALLER: Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yes. Yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Unless you want to come here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s $5 charge.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Yes, dear. Yes.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody about that though?

CLINIC: Yeah, you would have to wait two weeks for birth control pills and all that. Okay?

CALLER: How much does it cost to get birth control?

CLINIC: Okay, the initial visit would be $30, but then afterwards it would be $70, depending on what you want.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. No. That’s confidential.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call my boyfriend and call you back for an appointment. What was your name?

CLINIC: Bye bye. Just whoever answers the phone will help you.

CALLER: Oh, all right.]

CLINIC: Bye.

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood. This is Diane. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anybody I could call?

CLINIC: Is it for yourself?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You know you’re pregnant?

CALLER: Well, I took a pregnancy test from the store over the weekend.

CLINIC: Okay. What I would encourage you to do is to make an appointment to have an exam.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I can’t discuss that over the phone. You have your Yellow Pages, but I’d much rather you go to a doctor to have yourself checked out. We can do that here, and we can give you your choices and information at that time.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Would you like to make an appointment here?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to talk to my boyfriend and see.

CLINIC: You do that. But we don’t do abortions here, no.

CALLER: Okay. If I got an abortion, would they have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: That’s up to the facility that you go to. I don’t know.

CALLER: I can’t tell my parents at all.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. There are some states that do require parental consent.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: That’s what I’m saying to you. And I believe that’s Pennsylvania.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: But you come in here, talk to you boyfriend and get checked out, and see how far along you are.

CALLER: Would you guys have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: No. We’re a confidential service here. We encourage you to speak to your parents, but we do not do that, no.

CALLER: The reason why I can’t tell my parents is because they don’t like my boyfriend. He’s 22, and they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Okay. Do you know his parents at all?

CALLER: Well, he lives on his own.

CLINIC: Okay. And this is a mutual relationship that you’re having together?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: It’s not a forced relationship?

CALLER: Well, no. We love each other. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Okay, okay. Do you have an aunt or somebody that’s close to you that you can confide in with this?

CALLER: No. We just moved here.

CLINIC: From where?

CALLER: From Texas.

CLINIC: From Texas. Okay. You haven’t left any friends of family back there that you can even talk to?

CALLER: Well, no. I can’t call long distance. I’d get in trouble.

CLINIC: No siblings in the area, no brothers or sisters?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Talk to your boyfriend. I would strongly encourage you to get an exam.

CALLER: Okay. And they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We would encourage you to speak to your parents, but we don’t do that.

CALLER: If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Yes, we do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about birth control?

CLINIC: No. That’s correct.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: If my boyfriend has questions, is it all right if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: You sure can. That’s no problem. We have a doctor here Wednesday evenings and Saturday morning for appointments, okay?

CALLER: Is it all right if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: If you would like to, sure. No problem.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Diane.

CALLER: Diane? All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: You’d have to come in for a pregnancy test and speak with a counselor.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I ask a couple of questions first?

CLINIC: Okay. Well, due to security reasons, I won’t be able to answer anything about that.

CALLER: It’s just that I need to know before I do anything.

CLINIC: No. You need to come in for the test. And then when you come in for the test, they’ll be able to discuss everything with you then.

CALLER: It’s just — I can’t — the problem is, I can’t tell my parents at all. My boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married, but my parents can’t stand him because they think he’s too old for me. And if they found out that we were having sex, we would get in big trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. That’s no problem. We’re confidential. They don’t have to know.

CALLER: You wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there like an age limit for an abortion of anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: So it’s all right if I’m like — I’m going to be 14 in March, so that’s still okay?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: If it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, would you guys be able to do birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah? And still no one would have to know about that either?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Okay. So I have to come in to —

CLINIC: Yeah, you need to make an appointment. Hold on a second.

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hold on.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to make you an appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Could I get your name, last name first?

CALLER: Well, it’s Smith.

CLINIC: Smith?

CALLER: Uh-huh. And my first name is Christine.

CLINIC: With a “C”?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: What is your birthday?

CALLER: It’s March 19, 1988.

CLINIC: Phone number, cell phone, beeper?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I — I have to talk to my boyfriend. Can I call you guys back?

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Well, is it okay if I talk to you. I just don’t want —

CLINIC: Let me just set up this appointment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: What days are good for you?

CALLER: I don’t know. I’ve got to talk to my — well, I guess, maybe Friday.

CLINIC: Is he at school?

CALLER: Well, he’s at work.

CLINIC: Okay. Why don’t you call me back when you have a good time that the both of you can come. All right?

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Jackie.

CALLER: Jackie?

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know —

CLINIC: Not on this site. We just give you a referral somewhere to another Planned Parenthood, or we can give you a referral somewhere else– whatever suits you best. There’s like a whole explaining process on how each clinic works, and how they work, and how the anesthetic is done. So whatever you think is best for yourself.

So you would have to come in. Schedule an appointment first, come in, get a pregnancy test done. If it comes back positive, then we’ll give you a referral somewhere else. And we’ll counsel you on what you’re going to do and what you should do.

CALLER: Okay. Can I ask a few questions?

CLINIC: Excuse me?

CALLER: Can I ask you a question or two?

CLINIC: Yeah, you can ask me questions.

CALLER: Well, my main question is, like, my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No. That’s not true.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: Everything that’s said and done here is confidential, and you do not need your parents’ consent to get an abortion.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just that my parents can’t find out at all because my boyfriend’s 22. And we want to get married, but they hate him because he’s just so old. Well, they just think he’s old.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: Like, I don’t understand why they — but I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. You think what’s best for you. Whatever you want to do. You can either call and make an appointment with us, and we’ll schedule you to get a pregnancy test done here.

CALLER: Okay. And nobody would have to know?

CLINIC: Nobody knows, honey. Nobody has to know.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: And will you go to get the abortion done, you can go with a friend, or even with him you can go.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. You have rights here, like everybody else. Everything that’s done here, we don’t need your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Okay. Like if it ends up that I’m not pregnant or whatever —

CLINIC: You can get on birth control.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: No one would have to know about that either?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to set an appointment?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if I call my boyfriend, and then call you back?

CLINIC: Okay. Call your boyfriend, discuss it with him, and then call me back.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name?

CLINIC: Ask for Demaris (sp).

CALLER: Huh?

CLINIC: Ask for Demaris.

CALLER: Demaris?

CLINIC: Yeah. Just ask him to go in with you.

Please hold. I’m transferring you know.

CLINIC: Good morning, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering. Do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. You have to have had a positive pregnancy test. You have to be between 7 and 12 weeks pregnant. It’s anywhere from 350 to $450. And we only put people under our local anesthesia, which means that you are awake during the procedure. There’s two appointments. First is your health history appointment over the phone, and that person will schedule you for the appointment for the abortion.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if they have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No? It’s just I can’t tell my parents because my boyfriend’s 22. And we’re planning on getting married, but my parents don’t like him because they think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: Fine. Everything here is confidential.

CALLER: You don’t think he’s too old for me or anything?

CLINIC: That’s not my place to say anything.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: But as far as patients having abortions here, we’re not permitted to give out any information to anybody.

CALLER: Do know if there’s like an age limit for having an abortion?

CLINIC: No. How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: All right. Well, you’re too young for here. Because as far as we consider, patients that are 14 or younger, we send them to a place to be put to sleep because it’s a local anesthesia. And we don’t think that’s a good idea for patients that young.

CALLER: Other people won’t tell?

CLINIC: No one should tell. I can give you a phone number for Princeton Women’s Center. That’s on Route 1 in Princeton. And they put patients to sleep. Do you want that phone number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on, please.

(Pause)

CLINIC: That phone number is 609-514-9191.

CALLER: All right. If it turns out that I’m not pregnant, is it okay if I come to you guys for birth control or anything?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Yeah? And you still wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No. We’re not permitted to.

CALLER: Is it cool if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: If you want to talk to someone about — what do you want to talk to us about, your different options and things like that?

CALLER: Well, if my boyfriend has questions, is it okay if I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Well, we have a community services department. And we have counselors there, and they can talk to you.

CALLER: But I like you. You’re nice.

CLINIC: They’re much nicer than me.

CALLER: But you’re nice.

CLINIC: I know. But that’s what they’re here for. Okay? They’re here to talk to you about sexuality and preventive measures.

CALLER: But I really don’t want to talk to a whole bunch of people.

CLINIC: They’ll just give you one person to talk to. They’re educators, and that’s why they’re here. So if you wanted to talk to someone, you should — if you want to call back, you should call community services. Call the same number you called and ask for community services. And I think you should ask for Violet Sawyer.

CALLER: Violet?

CLINIC: Yes. She runs that department. And she’d be able to give you either someone in that department or she would talk to you.

CALLER: Okay. Could you switch me to her right now?

CLINIC: I’ll see if she’s available. I’m not sure she’s in today. Hold on, please. Let me check.

CALLER: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay, I’m sorry. I didn’t get your name.

CALLER: I’m Christine.

CLINIC: Christine, I’m going to give you to Michele. And she’s in community services. And I gave her a little bit of information that you gave me, and she’ll be able to talk to you. So hang on.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hi, Christine.

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: My name is Michele Giagano (ph) and I’m one of the pregnancy option counselors here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You were speaking to a woman named Sharon. She gave me a little bit of background information, that you were currently pregnant, and you were having difficulties coming to a choice.

CALLER: Yeah. Me and my boyfriend talked about it, and we’re wanting to get an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. So you had made your choice.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: So what was the reasoning behind the call?

CALLER: My friend told me that you guys have to tell about me and my boyfriend, and my parents have to find out and everything. And they can’t find out.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay. We don’t notify the parents.

CALLER: She said that you guys would have to find out that he’s 22 —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — and they would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No. That’s not true.

CALLER: Okay. They wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. As long as you had the financial ability to provide yourself —

CALLER: Yeah, he said he would pay cash for it.

CLINIC: They’re not going to notify your parents. That’s a Planned Parenthood thing. We don’t need parental consent, and we don’t notify anybody. We just communicate with the person who’s getting the services.

So if you wanted to call and schedule that, you can call on Friday between 9 and 12.

CALLER: Is it cool if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yeah. I mean, it’s not me. The person that you’d be calling to schedule the termination, her name is Julie. So you can call then and tell her that you want to schedule the termination of the pregnancy. And then she’ll ask you some questions, a little bit of a pre-screening they do. It’s just kind of to know about you and whether or not you would be a fit for here. And if not, they will refer you somewhere else.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? You have our number, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, great. Thanks.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Bye.

TAPE – 046

CLINIC: Good afternoon, Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know of anyone that does?

CLINIC: I can give you Pilgrim’s (sp) phone number if you want to?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s 973-746-1500.

CALLER: Okay. Could I ask a quick question?

CLINIC: That’s Pilgrim. That’s Pilgrim Medical.

CALLER: So you can’t answer any questions or anything?

CLINIC: Pertaining to?

CALLER: Well, it’s just my friend told me that you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: No, because you’re not coming here. You have to find out with them.

CALLER: Okay. So you don’t know?

CLINIC: No. You have to call them. They have their own rules.

CALLER: They have their own rules?

CLINIC: Yes. You have to call them, find out with them. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. If I was to get birth control —

CLINIC: First you have to go there. And after you go there, you make an appointment with us. All right?

CALLER: You guys don’t do birth control there either?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. But you have to go there and first then come here. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Even if like I’m not pregnant.

CLINIC: Do you need a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Yeah, I did one like —

CLINIC: I don’t understand your question. If you’re going for a termination, call the number that I gave you.

CALLER: Okay. But what if I wasn’t pregnant?

CLINIC: Afterwards, if you’re not — didn’t you say you had a pregnancy test done?

CALLER: Well, I did a home pregnancy test —

CLINIC: And?

CALLER: — but I didn’t know if I did it right or anything.

CLINIC: Well, I’m sorry. I won’t be able to help you there. But if you need a pregnancy test, you need to come tomorrow from 1:00 to 3:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right? Okay.

CALLER: So if I’m not pregnant, would I be able to go in there?

CLINIC: Listen to what I’m saying. Listen to what I’m saying. Okay? If you need a pregnancy test, come tomorrow from 1:00 to 3:00. Let’s do that first. After that, you decide if you’re pregnant, what you’re going to do; if you’re not, what you’re going to do. Okay?

CALLER: So if I’m not —

CLINIC: You have to wait for your pregnancy test result. Okay?

CALLER: Okay. But like if I’m not —

CLINIC: Hold on. What else do you need to know?

CALLER: Well, my problem is I can’t tell my parents about this.

CLINIC: Listen?

CALLER: Yeah? I just need someone to talk to.

CLINIC: Okay. Tomorrow you come from 1:00 to 3:00, and you get a pregnancy test. A person that takes you in will give you all the information you need.

CALLER: Do you have to be a certain age for that or anything?

CLINIC: No, no. Sexually active. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, bye.

Hold on. I’m going to get you someone else. Hold on.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yes? May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was just wanting to ask some questions. I’m just needing to talk to someone.

CLINIC: Okay. Ask the questions.

CALLER: I was told that my parents have to know if I want an abortion. Is that true?

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Oh, yeah.

CALLER: They do have to know?

CLINIC: Um-hmm.

CALLER: Is there any way, because I can’t tell them.

CLINIC: Well, you’re calling the wrong place. You have to call the abortion center and find out there rules, because we don’t do abortions, so we don’t know their rules.

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t pregnant or whatever, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, you could, if you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: And you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody at all?

CLINIC: No. For what?

CALLER: My friend said that I have to tell you guys about my boyfriend and everything before I can —

CLINIC: Look, let me tell you. Disregard what your friends say. All you have to do is come in and get a pregnancy test. If you’re not pregnant, we give you birth control. If you’re pregnant, we send you to the abortion clinic. Okay?

CALLER: He’s 22 and —

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter how old he is.

CALLER: It doesn’t matter at all?

CLINIC: It matters because you don’t want your parents to find out because they can have him arrested.

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Yeah. You want be 14 until March?

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: And he’s 22?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: They can have him arrested?

CALLER: Why? What would happen?

CLINIC: Because he is a grown-up; you’re a minor.

CALLER: What could happen to him?

CLINIC: They will put him in jail for statutory rape.

CALLER: What can I do?

CLINIC: Nothing.

CALLER: Nothing?

CLINIC: Uh-uh. Because first of all, if you’re 13, you shouldn’t have a 22-year-old boyfriend.

CALLER: But we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Well then your parents must know he’s 22, right?

CALLER: Well, that’s why they don’t like him.

CLINIC: Well, I can’t help you with that. That’s up to them, but I’m telling you.

CALLER: Do you have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We don’t have to tell anybody. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Now, if you want a pregnancy test, just come in between 1 and 3 tomorrow, and we will give you one. Okay?

CALLER: Can I call you back?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Maria.

CALLER: Maria?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

TAPE – 057

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood, Dover. Brenda speaking. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering, do you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: No? Do you know anyone that, like, would or anything?

CLINIC: You’d have to be a patient here to get the information. We have to be the one to do your pregnancy test and so forth in order to give you a referral.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do I — what do I need to do?

CLINIC: You have to have a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: If the test is positive, then you have to have a doctor’s appointment for a complete gynecological check-up with a pap smear to determine how pregnant you are. Then we can make a referral.

CALLER: All right. What do I need to do?

CLINIC: Have you missed a period?

CALLER: Well, yeah, like —

CLINIC: Are you more than 14 days late?

CALLER: Well, I think so.

CLINIC: Okay. Once you’ve missed a period and you’re 14 days late, you can come at anytime that we’re open, which is Monday through Saturday. We open at 9:00. Tuesday and Friday we close at 4:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday we close at 7:00, and Saturday at 3:00.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can just walk in anytime. We’ll do a pregnancy test. And if it turns out positive, then we’ll make you an appointment to come in and see the doctor.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: What if I — I did do a pregnancy test like last weekend.

CLINIC: You have to do a professional test. We have to do the test to establish it’s —

CALLER: Okay. Do you have to be like — do you guys have to tell my parents or anything?

CLINIC: No. How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No. You can come in and get a test.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: And nobody would have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. Of course, in order for you to get the termination, I mean, you may need some money. And that may be that you’d have to talk to your parents about it or talk to somebody that can help you pay for it.

CALLER: Oh, well, my boyfriend will pay for that.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: It’s just my parents can’t know at all. He’s 22. And we’re plan on getting married, but they can’t stand him because they think he’s too old for me. But they just can’t find out that we’re having sex.

CLINIC: Oh, okay.

CALLER: I would get in big trouble.

CLINIC: Okay. So then just come in, and we’ll do the test, and see what we have to do after that, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: If you guys did the test and I wasn’t pregnant, would there be any way to get birth control?

CLINIC: Yep.

CALLER: Yeah? Would you guys have to tell anybody about that at all?

CLINIC: No. You just have to make an appointment to come in to see the doctor. The doctor will examine you, and then give you a method of birth control.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, can I call you guys back later today or —

CLINIC: Well, you can just come in. You don’t need an appointment to come in for the pregnancy test.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So you just come in for that. And once that’s done, then we can make arrangements, appointments to come back for the rest of the stuff.

CALLER: Well, I need to talk to my boyfriend. But if he has questions, can I talk to you later?

CLINIC: Yeah, sure. Well, today is Tuesday. So we’re only here until 4:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So tomorrow would be the best day because we’re here from 9:00 in the morning until 7:00 at night.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what was your name so I can ask you.

CLINIC: My name is Brenda. I may or may not be here. But any of the girls will help you as well.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.
