TAPE – 403

(dialing sounds) (ringing X)

RECORDING: Hello. You have reached Planned Parenthood of Columbia. The office will be closed on February 21st on Thursday for a staff meeting. If you know your party’s extension — (dial sound) (ringing)

CLINIC: Columbia Planned Parenthood. This is Sandra. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. Did you need to schedule an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I don’t — I just wanted to ask some questions first.

CLINIC: What kind of question do you ask?

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: It’s $375, and we do them up to 13 weeks.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Well, usually if we do a pregnancy test we can go by the first day of your last cycle. Then once you come in for your actual appointment we’ll do a sonogram to actually see how far along you are.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’m just worried about it because like I haven’t had my period since like December 14, so.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: Well, I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on a moment.

CLINIC: This is Stephanie. Have you had a positive test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. You’ll need to do that before we can go any further.

CALLER: Well, would i get that there, or —

CLINIC: You can get it here if you like. You can walk in tomorrow between 10:00 and 2:00 and we can do it if you want to.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend would have to bring me. Would that be all right?

CLINIC: That’s okay. We don’t mind.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just my friend — I’m just worried because my friend said that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys would have to tell my parents I’m getting an abortion. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever and it would be all right?

CLINIC: Well, we won’t be able to do it in the state of Missouri without documented parental consent, which means the parent has to come here with you, be here through the whole thing.

CALLER: Oh, but I can’t tell my parents. They can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, then you’ll need to have this done in Illinois, which there’s a clinic in Illinois called the HOPE Clinic for women, and it’s about 15 minutes from the arch, and the state of Illinois does not require parental consent at this time.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But I can still come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: Sure. Oh, sure. And we can give you the number to that clinic then when you come if you want.

CALLER: Okay. And it would be all right if my boyfriend’s there with me?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: Okay. Well —

CLINIC: For your test?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yes. Not for the procedure. But if you go through with this, if you have an actual termination done, okay, he can be in the building with you, but not go through the procedure with you, okay?

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: So that’s where there’s going to be —

CALLER: Well, if the pregnancy test said that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes. You’ll need to set up an appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: So why don’t we go from there once we find out what your test says?

CALLER: Do my parents have to sign for me being on birth control?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Would you have to tell anybody that I was on birth control then?

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Well, then, okay. Well, my boyfriend is the only one — like I can’t drive to pick up like the birth control. Would he be able to pick it up?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Um-hum. You might also consider getting on the shot instead of pills.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: That’s — you do the once-a-month shot or the once-every-three-months shot. That way, you know, you won’t have to worry about hiding pills.

CALLER: Well, what does that do?

CLINIC: That just protects you against pregnancy for the time that you’re on it.

CALLER: Does it work as well as the pills?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you might –

CALLER: Is it a big shot?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: It’s in your butt.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So ask for information. Once you have the pregnancy test done, okay, if it’s negative, get the information when you come in for that, okay? And if it’s positive then we’ll go that route and give you information about those methods so you can decide once —

CALLER: Well, what time do you normally do pregnancy tests?

CLINIC: Any time between 10:00 and 2:00 tomorrow.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? We don’t offer them on Fridays.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: All righty.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.
