TAPE – 569

(dialing sounds) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Oh. Well, do you know of any place that does?

CLINIC: Ft. Collins, Colorado. And that number is 1-800-360-0665.

CALLER: Okay. Well do you know — I’m just really worried because like my friend told me — well, I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Can you hold on just a minute?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: (pause) You would need to call the number I gave you because the laws on that vary from state to state. So you’d have to call that 800 number and ask them.

CALLER: Well, would they have to tell my parents?

CLINIC: You would have to ask them that.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, could I — I’m just worried about all this because I haven’t had my period since like December 26 and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Oh. Maybe you should talk to them.

CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test though?

CLINIC: You sure could, and it’s $22.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody I was there for that?

CLINIC: No. No. No. No, we wouldn’t.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything, but we were talking about all this, and we decided we didn’t want a whole bunch of people to know about us. Would he have to sign anything if he’s paying for it?

CLINIC: No. But you do have to fill out a sheet of paper, but everything is confidential here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yeah, you could.

CALLER: It’s just, we don’t want to have to go through all this again, so — but.

CLINIC: Right. It would be– we have what we call a HOPE visit. $25. And then the pills run between $18 and $22. But you need to have that test done first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And you need to do it right away.

CALLER: Oh. Well, if I wasn’t pregnant and I was on birth control, could I get birth control like real quick, or — do you have to —

CLINIC: You have to — what you do is, you start the birth control pills the Sunday following your period. Say you started your period today; you would start those pills on Sunday.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But you know, that’s a long time, so you need to have that pregnancy test done immediately.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I just have a lot of questions and I —

CLINIC: I know you do, and that’s why it would probably a real good idea for you to come in and have the test.

CALLER: Okay. Well, what time are you there?

CLINIC: Well, we’re here from 9:00 to 4:00 today and you don’t have to have an appointment. You can just walk in.

CALLER: Well, I have to call my boyfriend and see if he had any other questions, but could I call and ask you? W hat as your name?

CLINIC: Well, my name’s Dixie, but I would rather have you talk to the nurse practitioner because —

CALLER: Oh. Well, what’s her name?

CLINIC: Nancy or Starla.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, but you know, the longer you wait if you need an abortion the more expensive it is because that fetus is growing.

CALLER: Well, do you know about how much it is?

CLINIC: No, honey, and you would have to call that number in Ft. Collins.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But I think your best bet would be to come in and confirm one way or the other. And it only takes a few minutes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: All right. Thanks.

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Bye.
