(Dialing, phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Good afternoon. Planned Parenthood.

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anybody that might?

CLINIC: Uh-huh. We are now referring people to a local provider of only the medical kind of abortion, not surgical.

CALLER: Okay. What’s the difference?

CLINIC: Medical is actually a series of pills, medications that you take, and it’s overseen by the doctor. It’s more of a private way to do it. You take the pills. You’re at home, and you’re under the care of the doctor. She’s not with you, but she’s always in contact with you.

CALLER: Well, it’s just I’m scared because my last period was December 14th.

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: Have you had a positive pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: Have you taken one yet?

CALLER: No. Do you guys do that there?

CLINIC: Yeah, we could do that for you. If you wanted to stop in we can do that on a walk-in basis anytime.

CALLER: Do you have to be a specific age for that? I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: No, that’s fine. You can stop in and do it. And it’s completely confidential.

CALLER: So if I was going to get an abortion, would they have to say anything to my parents? My friend said that my parents would have to sign some stuff, but my boyfriend’s 22. He is old enough to take care of that?

CLINIC: Probably — there are ways you can do it without letting your parents know.

CALLER: Oh, like how?

CLINIC: Yeah. It’s called a judicial bypass. And what we would do here is set you up with that information to obtain the judicial bypass. And it probably means a consultation with a local — I’m not real sure who it is. It’s a local person that we refer you to.

CALLER: Do I need a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: Yeah. But it’s right here. We can get all that stuff done for you right here.

CALLER: How much would that cost?

CLINIC: There wouldn’t be any fees for that. What is probably going to cost you is the pregnancy test. It’s $12 here.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: But that’s all.

CALLER: Is it all right if my boyfriend brings me to take the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. Yep, that’s fine.

CALLER: Would he have to sign any papers or anything? Because he just doesn’t want anybody to know.

CLINIC: No. No, he doesn’t have to. But you really should stop in. And just let me know at the front window right here that you want to take a walk-in pregnancy test, and we’ll get you started. We’re here until 6 today. If you’re interested in coming tomorrow, we’re here from 10 to 7.

CALLER: Could I come in there today?

CLINIC: Yeah. As long as you get here before 5:30.

CALLER: If the pregnancy test was negative, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: You bet.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody I was on birth control?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: All right. You’ve been so helpful. Thanks. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: You bet.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: My name’s Kate.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And if I’m not here, Jen’s here, or there’s several other people that answer the phone here that can help you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.
