(Phone ringing 2x)

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Wendy speaking. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do not provide that service right now. We will be providing it again probably in the spring. But obviously if you need it now, you can’t wait.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I can give you phone numbers if you’d like, referrals, or if you know someplace that you already have in mind —

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: — that’s fine too. Okay. Hold on. Let me grab the phone number list, okay?

CALLER: All right.

(Short pause)

CLINIC: No, it’s not in here.

(Talking to someone else) Oh-oh. Your pregnancy options are up on —

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: No, honey. I’m not talking to you. I’m talking to the other lady over here.

Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Howell.

CLINIC: Where honey?

CALLER: I live in Howell.

CLINIC: Howell.

(Talking to someone else) They’re all with her. I’m doing it now (hollering). Man oh man, she’s all over me like white on rice.

Howell. All right. Let me just read the places and maybe you know which one you’re closer to, okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Westland, Southfield, Clinton township.

CALLER: I don’t know. It doesn’t really matter. I just don’t want anyone to see me go in.

CLINIC: Oh, I don’t think that’s an issue, especially if go somewhere that’s not near your home. So I guess you want someplace that’s not near your home.

CALLER: Right.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, the one in Detroit is the one I’m most familiar with. They’re the most affordable too.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Yes. So let me give you that number. It’s 586-538-2020.

CALLER: My friend told me — I’ll be 14 in March, and she said that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22 —

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell your parents —

CALLER: — could he take care of that?

CLINIC: No. It doesn’t have anything to do with your boyfriend. But there’s parental consent. And if you’re under the age of 18, then you have got to go — Planned Parenthood had an attorney that worked for us for free, but you’re going to have to ask them at this place called Scotsdale. It’s called Scotsdale Women’s Center. And you’re going to have to ask them how they deal with it. Because they’re going to have to probably get you through the court system which will take a day. And you have an attorney that is appointed to you. And then you have to go in front of a judge and say that you understand what you’re having done, and then that could grant you the permission to get the abortion instead of your parents having to know.

CALLER: Okay. Couldn’t my boyfriend sign anything? He’s 22.

CLINIC: No. In fact, if you mention that he’s 22, he could go to jail.

CALLER: What? What do you mean?

CLINIC: That’s statutory rape, sweetie.

CALLER: What do you mean? He’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: I know, honey. But you’re only 14, and the law says you’ve got to be 16 to have sex. I know. It’s crazy.

CALLER: What could happen?

CLINIC: You don’t want to mention he’s 22, I’m telling ya’.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay? Because they could arrest him.

CALLER: Well, could I come where you’re at and get a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Oh, sure. Yeah, you could come in tomorrow or Thursday or Friday.

CALLER: But he’s got to drive me. Would he get in trouble if he brings me?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: No?

CLINIC: No. Because you’re not going to tell me about him.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Well, if —

CLINIC: Hold on one second, honey.

CALLER: All right.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Okay. Yeah. See, under law we’re suppose to report it. So as far as I’m concern, I don’t know nuttin’, okay?

CALLER: Well, say that I wasn’t pregnant after I get the pregnancy test, do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Oh, yes.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: That you don’t have to tell your parents. No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No, you can get an exam. You’d have to come back on a different day probably. But you could get the exam and the birth control pills and everything.

CALLER: Could my boyfriend come and pick up the pills though?

CLINIC: Once you’re a patient here, yes.

CALLER: Yeah?

CLINIC: As long as he has your permission.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I’ll probably see you tomorrow?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Or Thursday, whatever.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. Bye bye.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.
