(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CLINIC: Scottsdale Women’s Center. Lorraine.

CALLER: What did you say? I can’t hear you?

CLINIC: Scottsdale Women’s Center. Lorraine speaking.

CALLER: Oh. Hi, I’m sorry. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Do you know how much it cost for that?

CLINIC: How far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. How do you know?

CLINIC: When did you have your last normal menstrual period?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: That would be $230.

CALLER: All right. I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 on the 19th of this month, and my friend said that you guys wold have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. You would have to have parental consent. Your boyfriend cannot sign for you. If you can’t tell your parents, then there’s a program called judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: You have to come in and get a ultra sound to confirm your pregnancy. Then we would put you in touch with an attorney.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: There is no charge to go to court.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: And you go to court, and the judge will give you permission to have the abortion based on your level of maturity.

CALLER: Well, does the judge usually say that it’s all right?

CLINIC: Usually, yes.

CALLER: Oh, okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend, we were talking about all this. And he said that he would pay cash for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know anything about us. Would he have to sign anything or fill out any forms if he was paying?

CLINIC: No. Everything is strictly confidential.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: So you can just walk into the clinic for your ultra sound. It’s $50 for the ultra sound, and that goes toward the abortion.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: I just haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. But if I was on birth control, would you guys have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: All right. Okay. If I had any other questions, is it all right if I call you back?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: When is your next appointment?

CLINIC: You don’t need an appointment for the ultra sound. You can just walk in between 8:30 and 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I’ll call my boyfriend, and then we’ll come in.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Thomas Medical Center. (Unclear) speaking. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: When was your last menstrual cycle?

CALLER: January 3rd.

CLINIC: For 12 weeks, the fee is $275. Are you a student or do you have a Medicaid card?

CALLER: Well, no. My main thing is I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend —

CLINIC: You’ll be what?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, he’s not. No, he’s not.

CALLER: Okay. So what do I do?

CLINIC: Umm, hold on a second.

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: — so please ask our staff.

Thomas Medical Center is located in the northwest area of Detroit on McNichols (ph) near Greenfield (ph). Our hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. You may stop in anytime for a free pregnancy test.

— if the condom breaks, you miss a pill, or you just goofed, there is still something you can do to prevent pregnancy. The Morning After pill treatment is a low-cost, second chance for preventing pregnancy. To be effective the treatment must begin within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Ask about the Morning After pill, and a counselor will be happy to give you further detail.

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Um-hmm.

CLINIC: Do you have a close relative or an aunt or cousin or something that’s over 18?

CALLER: No. My boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: Yeah, you keep talking about your boyfriend. But do you know it’s against the law for him to be with you?

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: What I mean is you’re a minor. And he can go to jail for being with you.

CALLER: He can go to jail?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Why? I mean, he can’t go to jail. He’s the only one that’s here for me.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter. You’re under age.

CALLER: Well, what am I suppose to do?

CLINIC: I don’t know what you’re suppose to do.

CALLER: Well, what can I do?

CLINIC: Nothing. Because if you take him anywhere with you, he’s going to go to jail.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want him to go to jail.

CLINIC: Well, he will.

CALLER: How can I get an abortion and not let him go to jail?

CLINIC: You can’t. You have to have your parents’ permission.

CALLER: But I can’t tell them.

CLINIC: That’s the only thing that you can do.

CALLER: But I can’t tell them at all.

CLINIC: That’s the only option that you have, sweetie.

CALLER: Well, is there anyplace else I could go?

CLINIC: No. You really don’t understand what I’m saying. What I’m saying is, you are under age. You’re a minor. He is 22 years old. It’s against the law. It’s against the law for him to be with a 14-year-old girl.

CALLER: Okay. But he loves me.

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter. Nothing that you says matter because you are a minor.

CALLER: Oh. So there’s no way that I can —

CLINIC: The only option that you have is either telling your parents and having them come and sign for you or if you can find an aunt or a cousin or something like that. They can bring you in and that is a support person for you. And you can get a judicial bypass where you won’t have to tell your parents. But you will have to tell some adult relative and let them be your support person in order to even get a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What’s a judicial bypass?

CLINIC: That’s where you go before the judge, and the judge grants you maturity to make the decision on your own.

CALLER: Well, do the judges ever say no?

CLINIC: Yeah, it’s a possibility. It depends on how mature you are.

CALLER: Do I need to get a lawyer for that?

CLINIC: No, you don’t.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: Like I said, you have to have an adult relative or a support person in order to do that. And it has to be a relative, not your boyfriend.

CALLER: Well, could it be a friend?

CLINIC: But with him down there, they’re going to arrest him.

CALLER: Well, could it be a friend?

CLINIC: No. It has to be a relative.

CALLER: Do you guys do pregnancy tests there just to make sure I am pregnant?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: I just haven’t one of those yet.

CLINIC: You can walk in for a pregnancy test today up until 4:30.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody then?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: My boyfriend has to bring me. He’d be the only way I could get there. Would you get him arrested?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, do you guys do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do. And you can make an appointment for that if the results came back that you were not pregnant.

CALLER: Would anybody have to know if I was getting birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about my boyfriend?

CLINIC: No, we would not.

CALLER: The thing is, I can’t drive. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills?

CLINIC: No. You would have to pick them up.

CALLER: Well, you’ve been really helpful. Could I call you if — I just had no idea —

CLINIC: For more information?

CALLER: Yeah. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Autumn.

CALLER: Okay. Thanks

CLINIC: All right. Bye bye.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD

DETROIT, MI 48226-1602

TAPE – 289

(Dialing, phone ringing 1x)

CALLER: Hello. Planned Parenthood. Kim speaking. May I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. Hi. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: Do you know of anyplace that does?

CLINIC: I can give you the number to Scotsdale.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The number is 313-538-2020.

CALLER: Okay. Well, can I ask you a quick question?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: My friend told me that since I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Can he just take care of whatever they’re doing?

CLINIC: No, there has to be parental consent.

CALLER: Really? There’s no way — there’s just no way that they can find out at all. Is there any way not to tell them?

CLINIC: Well, you can do a judicial bypass.

CALLER: What is that?

CLINIC: I’ll let Doll (ph) explain it to you. Hold one second, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

(Long pause)

CLINIC: This is Doll. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. I was wondering if you guys did abortions.

CLINIC: No, we don’t do that right now.

CALLER: I was talking to someone else, but she said that — I’ll be 14 in March, and I was asking if there was anything that I could do so that my parents don’t have to find out.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s a judicial bypass. I’m going to give you some information. What county do you live in?

CALLER: I live in Warren.

CLINIC: You live in Warren? Now, Warren has a different system.

CALLER: My boyfriend’s 22. Could he take care of anything?

CLINIC: No, basically you can do it yourself. Let me find something for you.

Warren? Is that Macomb County. That’s Macomb County, right?

CALLER: I’m not really sure which county it is. We just moved here.

CLINIC: I’ll give you this information. You got a pen?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: You need to call directly to Macomb County, and they will assign someone to you from the list they have. They do it different.

CALLER: Does that cost anything?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: The number is 810-464-6476. Judge Norwaski (ph)?

CALLER: Norwaski?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: How do you spell that?

CLINIC: N-a-w-i-c-k-i. He approves the list for attorneys who can take judicial bypass cases, okay? There’s approximately about 15 attorneys. And if any attorney comes in that’s not on the list, they will not get paid. So it must be on his list. Everybody else, we can give them any attorney. But McComb County has to have certain ones on the list. So you call and get a person on the list, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Did you get your clinical test yet?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: You need to get a clinical test first.

CALLER: How much does that cost?

CLINIC: Nothing. Come to a Planned Parenthood, and you can get a pregnancy test for free. There’s one close to you. There’s one in Warren on DeQuinter (ph). It’s 696. I can give you the phone number.

CALLER: I just don’t want anyone else to know.

CLINIC: Nobody else to know? Oh, this is confidential. Nobody won’t know unless you tell them.

CALLER: Well, is it okay if my boyfriend brings me?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. That’s no problem. We have one close to you though. I’m going to give you the phone number. It’s 810 — or if you feel more comfortable to come here with me, that’s fine.

CALLER: Actually, yeah, I do.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 961-7370. And we are open tomorrow from 11 to 7, actually 11:30 to 7. You can come here tomorrow and we can give the pregnancy test and stuff like that. And I’ll talk you to tomorrow about it. And my name is Doll.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend wanted me to find out if we could get birth control. Like if I wasn’t pregnant, could you give me birth control?

CLINIC: Oh, yeah. You can start that right away. You okay? You can start that right away. Maybe we can make you a patient and start taking care of everything. We’ll take one step at a time, and we’ll try to get you in tomorrow, if you’re not pregnant.

CALLER: My parents don’t like my boyfriend. They just think he’s too old for me.

CLINIC: We won’t tell them. Like I said, we won’t tell them unless you tell them. So we’ll see you tomorrow. You come here and get your pregnancy test.

CALLER: So you won’t have to tell anybody about anything at all?

CLINIC: I would not call and tell anybody anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
