CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Please hold.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Well, 5 weeks to 12 weeks, it will be $325.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: We will be confirming it by a sonogram.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my last period was January 3rd. Does that make any difference?

CLINIC: Well, if you are within that 12-week range, yes. It should be 325. And we use only local anesthesia.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we don’t tell any parents.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: How old are you, you said?

CALLER: I’ll be 14 on the 19th of this month.

CLINIC: No. We don’t say anybody. We don’t tell your parent.

CALLER: Me and boyfriend were talking about all this, and he said he would pay cash for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us.

CLINIC: No. Everything is confidential here.

CALLER: His name wouldn’t be on any papers or anything?

CLINIC: Uh-uh.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about us?

CLINIC: No. We don’t tell anybody about it.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: When you come and when you make appointment, fill out the paperwork. Do not leave any of your home address where you don’t want us to contact or do not give any telephone number. That’s it. You could give your personal number, and that’s it. For emergency contact do not give your parents’ name or number.

CALLER: Could I give my boyfriend’s?

CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s fine. Whatever number you give, we will contact them. We won’t tell your parents or anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: I would have to call him and see. But I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that beforehand just to make sure?

CLINIC: Just do a pregnancy test. First of all, do a pregnancy test, and then just call us. We do pregnancy test here. We do walk-in. You can come in before 3:30.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Usually sometimes probably the maximum is $15, but it could be less than that for you, okay?

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You can, but you have to make a separate appointment.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: For that it depends on your income level.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job or anything.

CLINIC: That’s fine. You just have to fill out, and if you don’t have any job —

CALLER: But my boyfriend has a job.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Can they use his income?

CLINIC: Well, yeah, we can. We can. Just do a pregnancy test first, okay? Don’t panic.

CALLER: Would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Everything stay confidential. You do not put anybody’s name you don’t want us to call or contact.

CALLER: I’m just really confused. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Sure.

CALLER: What was your name?

CLINIC: Sue. You can contact. No problem. Okay.

CALLER: All right. Thanks. So I can call —
