TAPE – 694

(dialing sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Hillcrest.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: Okay. Could you hold one minute?

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: (music) — So our counselors are not only bachelor prepared but experienced in dealing with these individual needs and concerns. The physicians at Hillcrest are board certified or board eligible in their specialty of obstetrics and gynecology and highly skilled in performing abortion. All of our nurses are licensed and some are certified.

CLINIC: I’ll be right with you.

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: (music) If you are being referred here by your HMO please make our receptionist aware of this. (music) Thank you for calling Hillcrest Clinic. For information regarding abortion, anesthesia —

CLINIC: Hello. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi, yeah. I was wanting to know how much it costs to get an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, it depends on how far along you are. Up through 12 weeks is $325. And that’s with IV sedation. If you want to be asleep, it’s $400.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Do you know when your last normal period was?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. Right now you’re maybe about 9 weeks now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, could I ask you real quick? I’m just worried because like — the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Here’s — the thing is that if you’re not going to be telling your parents and you’re 13 now?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: It’s hard to say that if you’re 13 — the law, the law in Maryland is that if — your parents have to be notified that you’re here, but if you think that telling them would cause some kind of either emotional or physical abuse, then you can waive the notification.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how do you do that?

CLINIC: You just tell us that when you come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And it doesn’t matter how old your boyfriend is. You just tell us that. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re the person that has to sign everything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Now let me just tell you that in case of an emergency which is not really likely to happen, but you know, I have to tell you that it might — so your parents would be notified in that case.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But that’s not really likely to happen.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: But otherwise you wouldn’t say anything?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just —

CLINIC: Now I need to check for sure because of your age, okay? So do you want to hold on a minute?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on.

RECORDING: (music) Thank you for calling Hillcrest Clinic. For information regarding abortion, anesthesia, scheduling an appointment or fees, please stay on the line and someone will be right with you. (music) Hillcrest Clinic has been assisting women in their decision of choice since 1973. The clinic performs first and second trimester abortions using local anesthesia, IV sedation or sleep anesthesia. (music) If you are being referred here by your HMO, please make our receptionist aware of this. (music)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Like what I said was you know, when you come in you just tell us that you’re not telling your parents because such and such, such and such, you know. It will cause some kind of either physical or emotional abuse.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I have to call my boyfriend to see. It’s just, we were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything would he have to —

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Now if you’re going to be put to sleep it’s $400.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And with IV sedation which will just help you relax and it’s $325. Have you ever had a vaginal — I mean, have you ever had a pelvic exam?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Have you been to the doctor before? Okay. Our doctors would probably suggest that you do be put to sleep for it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you can tell them that it’s going to be $400. It might be less.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But you’ll need to make sure that you make your appointment before I’d say the 20th of March.

CALLER: Okay. So how much should my boyfriend bring?

CLINIC: $400.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you’re sure nobody has to know about anything?

CLINIC: Unless in the unlikely event of something happening. There’s a risk to every medical procedure. So you know, in the unlikely event that anything should happen we would have to tell your parents. But that doesn’t usually happen.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re going to call back to make your appointment?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Talk to him, right?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, another thing — do you guys like do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to worry about all this again.

CLINIC: That’s a good idea. (laughs) When you come in you’re going to be here for about four hours that day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So part of that four hours is you will talk to a counselor and you can talk to her about birth control and we can get you started on it if you want.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call my boyfriend.

CLINIC: That’s all up to you. If you want to tell your parents or not tell them, that’s all up to you. We don’t give out any information about any of our patients no matter how old or young you are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: But when do you guys normally set appointments?

CLINIC: All of our appointments are Tuesday through Saturday and you need to be here either sometime between 8:30 and 11:30 because you’re going to be here for about 4 hours that day.

CALLER: Okay. So let me call my boyfriend and see when he get the time off work and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Cheryl.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Okay, hon. Do you know when your last menstrual cycle was?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. You are under 12 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: As long as you’re under 12 weeks it’s $350 for twilight sedation.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: $400 if you want to be put to sleep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — the main thing is, I haven’t — I’m just worried because like my birthday is — I’m going to be 14 on my next birthday like on the 19th, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. Once you become pregnant, you’re considered an adult. We don’t need parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I could come in there and — well, it’s just, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he said that he would pay for everything. Would he have to sign anything though?

CLINIC: No. I mean, he could pay — if he’s paying with a credit card he can sign, but you’re the one who’s going to be filling out the paperwork.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No one’s got to know about it but you and him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So —

CLINIC: Did you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, yeah, but do you have any hours on Saturday though?

CLINIC: Yes. We are here on Tuesday, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We only schedule in the morning. We schedule between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Usually here three to five hours. Saturdays you’re here five to six hours because it’s busier.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We do them all in one day.

CALLER: Okay. After getting an abortion, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Yes. We offer birth control.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, hon. I mean, we give you sample packs, but you’ll have to go fill the prescription and pay for it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So let me call my boyfriend and call you back. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Okay. Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much does that cost?

CLINIC: What’s the first day of the last normal period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: One second. The price is $320 to stay awake.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or $320 to have a mild sedative.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And $400 to be put to sleep.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just —

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter, ma’am. You have to have parental consent if you’re under the age of 18.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way —

CLINIC: You have to have a reason why that you cannot tell your parents?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: You have to have a reason why you cannot tell your parents.

CALLER: Well, I don’t know what they would do if they found out. I mean, they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, there has to be a reason why you can’t tell them. It’s just, you can’t have a reason that you’re scared to tell them.

CALLER: They’d be furious if they found out.

CLINIC: Well, you have to have a legitimate reason why you cannot tell them, and the counselor will discuss that with you when you come in for the surgery.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us, but he said that he would pay for everything, but —

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter, ma’am. If he’s under — if you’re under the age of 18 you have to have parental consent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It’s state law.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you guys do pregnancy tests there though?

CLINIC: You’ve already had a positive test or no?

CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period for awhile and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Well, you can come in today between the hours of 10 to 3 for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. The only way I’d be able to get there is if my boyfriend took me, and I don’t have any other way to get there.

CLINIC: Well, you decide on how you want to get in, okay?

CALLER: Well, do you do it any other day?

CLINIC: Until Friday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control?

CLINIC: It’s $65 for birth control here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would my parents have to know about it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Okay. Well, so just come in like today or on Friday and get a pregnancy test or —

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Do I need to call for an appointment or anything?

CLINIC: Um-um. Just walk in.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions could I call you back and ask you? What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m not allowed to give my name over the phone, sweetie. We’re an abortion clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Planned Parenthood Administrative Office. How may I direct your call?

CALLER: Well, I don’t know. I was wondering about if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am. We do terminations in our Baltimore City and Annapolis offices.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know if there’s like an age limit for that? Like I’ll be 14 in March.

CLINIC: In general Maryland law requires that minors, anyone under 18 have one parent consent to the termination.

CALLER: Is there any way not to do that?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Like I just can’t tell my parents at all because my boyfriend’s 22 and we’re going to get married, but they can’t find out.

CLINIC: Wait a minute. Calm down. Yes, there is. There are two ways. One is a, what is called a judicial bypass where you would need to go before a court judge and he would say whether or not you are mature enough to make that decision on your own basically. And there’s also what’s called I believe medical bypass where the doctor that’s performing the surgery can either say that you’re mature enough or that it’s in your best interest to have the termination. And I’m sure that most of our minors that come into our centers use the medical bypass.

CALLER: Okay. So that’s the best thing to do, you think?

CLINIC: That’s probably the less time-consuming thing to do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You would basically need to call and set up an appointment. Presently you’re 13?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. What you would need to do is call and set up an appointment. Did you want — I can give you the number to both health centers, and either one. Are you closer to the one in Baltimore City or Annapolis?

CALLER: Baltimore.

CLINIC: Okay. What you would do is call 410-576-1414, and you want to choose option 1 for English and then option 4 for the appointment desk.

CALLER: Okay. Well, like my friend said that you guys have to tell about my boyfriend. Is that true?

CLINIC: We have to do what?

CALLER: Like do you guys have to know about my boyfriend or anything?

CLINIC: Well, what do you mean know? What —

CALLER: Like do they ask about the father or anything like that?

CLINIC: I’m not sure. I don’t work in the health center. I don’t know how much information that they ask for. In general it really doesn’t matter. I mean, if that’s information you want to give they may ask, you know. I really don’t know what information that they will ask, honestly. As far as — is he going to be paying for it? Is that —

CALLER: Yeah. He’s taking care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay. I mean, we don’t really (unclear) information about other people unless, you know, you volunteer it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Share that information.

CALLER: So would it be better just not to say anything?

CLINIC: I mean, if they ask you or if it’s something that they need to know, then of course you would need to speak with the, whoever you speak with, maybe a clinician or maybe a counselor, whomever, regarding the issue. But I can’t say 100 percent whether or not they’re going to say — well, in general they don’t ask, well who is the person that, you know, you got pregnant by and so on and so forth.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you definitely need to call, and do you have any idea of how many weeks pregnant you are?

CALLER: Well, my last period was like the first week in December.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Oh, okay. I was just trying to get a kind of estimate of the weeks, and — but you have — have you taken a home pregnancy test or something like that?

CALLER: Yeah. I took one over the weekend, and it said it was positive.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: But like do you know if those are really accurate?

CLINIC: They’re pretty accurate.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: You’ve only taken one?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: But that was the last period you had in December, right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And you usually had regular, like every month, menstrual periods before that?

CALLER: Yeah, usually.

CLINIC: Yeah. They will — let me see. I just want to give an estimate of the number of weeks pregnant you are from the information you gave me. You said first week in December was your last period?

CALLER: Yeah. Uh-huh.

CLINIC: What’s today? The 15th. Okay. It looks — I mean, from the information you gave me I can — I mean, it’s an estimate, okay?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: A broad estimate. Looks like you can be somewhere between 10 and 11 weeks.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It could be less than that. It could be more. I mean, the only way to really get an exact estimate is to have a sonogram. But you may or may not have to have that done too, by you being around 10 or 11 weeks.

CALLER: Is it all right to come in there and get like a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You can get a pregnancy test at any of our health centers. You know, you can do that and you can —

CALLER: Okay. Well, like say that I came in there and I wasn’t pregnant after I took the pregnancy test there, or whatever. Do you guys do birth control?

CLINIC: Yes. Yes, ma’am.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: No, ma’am.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Sure wouldn’t. Confidential.

CALLER: All right. Well, I just — you’re so nice. I wish I could talk to my mom like I’m talking to you. But what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Felissa (sp).

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: All right then.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
