CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Well, 5 weeks to 12 weeks, it will be $325.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: We will be confirming it by a sonogram.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my last period was January 3rd. Does that make any difference?

CLINIC: Well, if you are within that 12-week range, yes. It should be 325. And we use only local anesthesia.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: The thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we don’t tell any parents.

You could give your personal number, and that’s it. For emergency contact do not give your parents’ name or number.

CALLER: Could I give my boyfriend’s?

CLINIC: That’s fine. That’s fine. Whatever number you give, we will contact them. We won’t tell your parents or anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: I would have to call him and see. But I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that beforehand just to make sure?

CLINIC: Just do a pregnancy test. First of all, do a pregnancy test, and then just call us. We do pregnancy test here. We do walk-in. You can come in before 3:30.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Usually sometimes probably the maximum is $15, but it could be less than that for you, okay?

CALLER: Okay. If it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: You can, but you have to make a separate appointment.

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: For that it depends on your income level.

CALLER: Well, I don’t have a job or anything.

CLINIC: That’s fine. You just have to fill out, and if you don’t have any job —

CALLER: But my boyfriend has a job.

CLINIC: That’s fine.

CALLER: Can they use his income?

CLINIC: Well, yeah, we can. We can. Just do a pregnancy test first, okay? Don’t panic.

CALLER: Would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Everything stay confidential. You do not put anybody’s name you don’t want us to call or contact.

CALLER: I’m just really confused. If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Hagerstown Reproductive Health Service.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: Well, it depends on how far you’re along.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know?

CLINIC: When was your first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: As of today you’re between like 9 and 10 weeks, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So that would be – it would be $285.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right. Now do you know if your blood type is RH negative or positive?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, if it would be negative, there would be an additional $35 charge for microgam (sp). It’s a shot you would need to receive after the procedure.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And it’s not, if you were positive then it would just be the $285.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, do you know — like the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just — is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, let me — I’m going to have to give you to someone else. You could talk to them — might answer that better than I can.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Can you hold on one moment?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on. (pause) Okay> What they tell me is in Maryland we would not have to tell your parents, okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But we’re going to refer you down to the Potomac Family Planning which is in Rockville. Okay? That — do you have a pencil?

CALLER: Yes.

CLINIC: Okay. It’s 1-800-260-2464.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, why should I go there?

CLINIC: Well, because usually when you’re this young — it’s hard to go through and you need to really be relaxed and everything. Most likely he’d want to put you kind of under because here you’re awake and they just, they basically just numb you.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So it might be just for you might be a little bit — you might be a little bit more comfortable going down there.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? We’re just —

CALLER: Well, could I ask you? It’s just I haven’t done a pregnancy test yet. Could I come there for that?

CLINIC: Yes, you can come here and get a free pregnancy test. Well, when was your — let’s see. So you said your last period then was in —

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. So you haven’t had one since?

CALLER: Right. That’s why we’re scared about all this.

CLINIC: Okay. Yes, you can come here and get a free pregnancy test. That’s no problem. You can come pretty much any time for that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control?

CLINIC: They could schedule an appointment that you would get a yearly.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: How much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: I want to say around it’s between $40 and $60, but don’t hold me to that.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: I usually do lab work, so I’m not 100 percent on that. But I mean, it’s not ungodly expensive or anything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: As far as I know, no.

CALLER: Okay. The thing is, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this and he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: I mean, if he pays cash or whatever, yeah.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So if I had any other questions could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m Diane, but you can talk to any of the — I mean, it’s a counselor is usually who answers the phone. So you can ask them anything and they can help you out, probably even better than me. (laughs) Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All righty?

CALLER: Thank you.

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: Good morning. Gynemed Surgical Center. This is Julie. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CLINIC: As long as you’re under 12 weeks it’s $350 for twilight sedation.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: $400 if you want to be put to sleep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — the main thing is, I haven’t — I’m just worried because like my birthday is — I’m going to be 14 on my next birthday like on the 19th, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Okay. Once you become pregnant, you’re considered an adult. We don’t need parental consent.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: So I could come in there and — well, it’s just, my boyfriend and I were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us. But he said that he would pay for everything. Would he have to sign anything though?

CLINIC: No. I mean, he could pay — if he’s paying with a credit card he can sign, but you’re the one who’s going to be filling out the paperwork.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: No one’s got to know about it but you and him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So —

CALLER: Well, yeah, but do you have any hours on Saturday though?

CLINIC: Yes. We are here on Tuesday, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We only schedule in the morning. We schedule between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Usually here three to five hours. Saturdays you’re here five to six hours because it’s busier.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We do them all in one day.

CALLER: Okay. After getting an abortion, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Yes. We offer birth control.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No, hon. I mean, we give you sample packs, but you’ll have to go fill the prescription and pay for it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. So let me call my boyfriend and call you back. Is that okay?

CLINIC: Okay. Um-hum.

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CALLER: Okay. Do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: Under 12 weeks?

CALLER: Okay. Well, I don’t know. I just haven’t had my period since January 3, so.

CLINIC: It’s under 12 weeks. With or without sedation it’s $360.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — it’s just, the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend —

CLINIC: No, we don’t.

CALLER: — is 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We wouldn’t tell your parents anyway.

CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend talked about it. He said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anybody to know about this. Would he have to sign anything if he was paying for it?

CLINIC: Only if he’s using a credit card.

CALLER: Okay. Well, he said that he would pay cash, so.

CLINIC: Okay. You just need to make an appointment.

CALLER: So there wouldn’t be any records of this and no one would have to find out anything?

CLINIC: There are going to be records because we are a legal medical facility. But we don’t call your parents. The only way anybody can get your information is if they subpoena it.

CALLER: Well, I’m just talking about like my boyfriend. Would there be any record of him?

CLINIC: Only if you put his name on anything.

CALLER: Okay. But he doesn’t have to do that if he pays for everything with cash?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well —

CLINIC: And how old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 on the 19th.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: So, but it’s just — I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet, so do you guys do that there — just to make sure?

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can get a home test and make sure you’re pregnant before you go scaring yourself though.

CALLER: Oh. Well, are those usually right?

CLINIC: Huh?

CALLER: Are those usually right?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: Oh, okay. I just — okay. It’s just I don’t want to have to worry about all this any more, but would, if I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: For just a checkup, you’ve never been here before, it’s $100.

CALLER: Okay. And then how much would the birth control be?

CLINIC: They’ll give you a pack of pills to start and a prescription for six months.

CALLER: Okay. All right. So, but the thing is, I can’t drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the pills, or —

CLINIC: No. You have to be seen by the doctor.

CALLER: Okay. But after that?

CLINIC: You’re going to get a prescription. You just go get it filled every month and then when you start the last pack you get another checkup. You get your checkup every six months and a pap smear once a year.

CALLER: Okay. When do you normally have appointments available for a pregnancy test and stuff?

CLINIC: For a pregnancy test it’s walk-in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: There’s a $5 fee.

CALLER: Okay. Do you ever have any hours on Saturday?

CLINIC: For the pregnancy test?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Yeah. Not this Saturday though.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Saturdays we won’t be back until the 16th on a Saturday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would it be all right to come in on a Saturday that’s not this next one?

CLINIC: Around what time?

CALLER: I don’t know. When are your hours?

CLINIC: Anywhere from 9:00 to 1:00. No. Yeah, 9:00 to 1:00. But call first to make sure we’re still here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Because we leave as soon as we’re done.

CLINIC: (pause) Thank you for holding. How may I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does that cost?

CLINIC: It depends on how far along you are. Do you know the first day of your last period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. Did you want to stay awake or be asleep?

CALLER: I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: Okay. It would be $275 to stay awake, $450 to be asleep.

CALLER: Okay. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. It’s just the thing is I’m going to be later on this month and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: But we would never call and tell them unless we had an emergency with you.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, me and my boyfriend were talking about all this and he said that he would pay for everything. It’s just, we don’t want anyone to know about us. But —

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay. So, but like does he have to sign anything though if he’s paying?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh, okay. That’s what he was worried about. But also, it’s just I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. You guys do that there?

CLINIC: We do but you should probably have a home pregnancy test before you actually come in. If you wanted to come here and have a pregnancy test it would be $5.

CALLER: Okay. I’m just worried about the one at the store not being right, so.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, then you could come in here and have one.

CALLER: Okay. What time do you normally do pregnancy tests there?

CLINIC: We do them all day. You could come in between 9 and 5 and just have a walk-in pregnancy test done. If it’s positive we can set up an appointment for you to have a termination.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: If it’s not positive then we would send you away and have you come back in two weeks if you still hadn’t gotten your period.

CALLER: Okay. Well, could I get birth control?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Birth control you would need to have a pap smear first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: That’s $85, and then your pills would be free.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. It all depended on how well you hid them.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, so you guys — it’s just the thing is my boyfriend works from 8 to 5 during the week. Do you have like any weekend hours, or —

CLINIC: We don’t. We don’t have weekend hours in this office, but we do in the Prince George’s County office. We have Saturday hours.

CLINIC:

CLINIC:

CALLER: My last period was January 3.

CALLER: Okay. All right. So maybe he could get the time off. I don’t know. He was just wanting to go to you guys for some reason. So.

CLINIC: Falls Women’s Medical Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much does that cost?

CLINIC: What’s the first day of the last normal period?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: One second. The price is $320 to stay awake.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Or $320 to have a mild sedative.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And $400 to be put to sleep.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just —

CLINIC: It doesn’t matter, ma’am. You have to have parental consent if you’re under the age of 18.

CALLER: Oh. Well, is there any way —

CLINIC: You have to have a reason why that you cannot tell your parents?

CALLER: What?

CLINIC: You have to have a reason why you cannot tell your parents.

CALLER: Well, I don’t know what they would do if they found out. I mean, they can’t find out at all.

CLINIC: Well, there has to be a reason why you can’t tell them. It’s just, you can’t have a reason that you’re scared to tell them.

CALLER: They’d be furious if they found out.

CLINIC: Well, you have to have a legitimate reason why you cannot tell them, and the counselor will discuss that with you when you come in for the surgery.

CALLER: Okay. Well, it’s just me and my boyfriend were talking about all this, and we don’t want anyone to know about us, but he said that he would pay for everything, but —

CALLER: No. I just haven’t had my period for awhile and I’m scared.

CLINIC: Well, you can come in today between the hours of 10 to 3 for a pregnancy test.

CALLER: Okay. The only way I’d be able to get there is if my boyfriend took me, and I don’t have any other way to get there.

CLINIC: Well, you decide on how you want to get in, okay?

CALLER: Well, do you do it any other day?

CLINIC: Until Friday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control?

CLINIC: It’s $65 for birth control here.

CALLER: Okay. Well, would my parents have to know about it?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay. Okay. Well, so just come in like today or on Friday and get a pregnancy test or —

CLINIC: Um-hum.

CALLER: Okay. Do I need to call for an appointment or anything?

CLINIC: Um-um. Just walk in.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions could I call you back and ask you? What was your name?

CLINIC: I’m not allowed to give my name over the phone, sweetie. We’re an abortion clinic.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Bye bye.

CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. This is Tory. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: You know about how far along you are.

CALLER: Well, no.

CLINIC: No? Okay. Do you know when the first day of your last menstrual period was?

CALLER: I think it was like January 1.

CLINIC: January 1? Okay. That would be $350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that’s with the local anesthetic. It’s not — you are awake for it in other words.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Where exactly are you guys located?

CLINIC: On West Street in Annapolis.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Well, it’s just, the thing is, I’m kind of worried because, well I’m going to be 14 like on the 20th, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: We don’t have to tell anybody anyway. Whoever told you that didn’t tell you the truth. We don’t contact parents in other words.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Yeah. We don’t tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just, another thing, like me and my boyfriend were talking about this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything, would he have to sign anything?

CLINIC: Well, he’d have to sign like a check or credit card slip, but if —

CALLER: Well, he said that he would pay for cash.

CLINIC: Okay. Then no, he doesn’t have to sign anything, no.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. Well —

CLINIC: Did you want to call back and make an appointment after you think things through?

CALLER: Well, I was actually wondering if you guys do the pregnancy tests there too.

CLINIC: Did you already do a pregnancy test?

CALLER: Well, no. I just haven’t had my period for awhile, and I’m just really worried.

CLINIC: You haven’t taken a pregnancy test?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Oh. Yeah, we can do one before the procedure. Yes.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: It’s just, my period — I just haven’t had my period for a long time. Do you think that I’m not pregnant?

CLINIC: It’s quite possible. You might want to take a pregnancy test. It could just be something that is going wrong.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You should take a pregnancy test. If you know you’re not pregnant you need to see a doctor for that.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I ended up that I wasn’t pregnant could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would anybody have to know if I was getting birth control?

CLINIC: No. (laughs)

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: How old are you?

CALLER: I’m going to be 14 later on this month.

CLINIC: Okay. No. Nobody has to know about that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: Okay, so do you actually know if the pregnancy tests you get at the store are right?

CLINIC: Do I know if they’re right?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Yeah, they’re very accurate.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, are the ones you guys do better?

CLINIC: They’re about the same thing. I mean, it’s just a clinical form of it, that’s all.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, when do you guys — do you guys ever do any appointments on Saturday or —

CLINIC: We only do abortions on Thursdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The Baltimore Health Center does them on Saturdays and Fridays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want their phone number?

CALLER: Well, I have to call my boyfriend and see, but let me call him and call you back. Is that all right?

CLINIC: That’s quite okay.

CALLER: Okay. What was your name again?

CLINIC: My name is Tory.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You can just ask for anybody. It doesn’t matter.

CALLER: Oh, all right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye.

CALLER: Bye.

CLINIC: (unclear) Family Planning Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know how much it costs for that?

CLINIC: It ranges by the number of weeks in the pregnancy. How far along are you?

CALLER: I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since January 3, and I’m really worried.

CLINIC: Okay. January, so probably December was the last time you had a normal one?

CALLER: Well, January was a normal one.

CLINIC: Oh, okay. When did you have it in January?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on just a minute. Okay. You’re probably about 9 weeks if your date is correct.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And local anesthesia where you’re awake and would feel the cramping is $250.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Twilight anesthesia where you’re sedated — hold on just a moment.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Thank you for holding. Twilight where you’re sedated but not fully asleep is $350.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: With general anesthesia where you’re completely asleep is $410.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Which one would you like?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, we can give you appointments this week if you wanted to come in. We do them on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We do the twilight and the general sleep on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And we do the locals every day on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

CALLER: Okay. Well, do you know — another thing I’m worried about is, well I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of it and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Do you look 14?

CALLER: Well, I guess. Well, I don’t know.

CLINIC: (laughs) We don’t ask for identification.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? I hate to say this, but we don’t ask for identification, so whatever someone puts down on their age is what we go by. I mean, I’m not going to ask you for an ID.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: The only time we ask for ID is if someone’s paying with a credit card, and whoever is pay with a credit card has to show ID.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Other than that, we don’t ask for ID. So you know, you take it from there.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said he would pay with cash, so.

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Well, you know, like i said —

CALLER: It’s just, we were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything. We just don’t want anyone to know about us.

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: If he was paying would you have to —

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: — have him sign anything

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: And whatever name you put on that paper is the name that we call you by.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Read in between the lines there.

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, is there any way you think that I’m not pregnant though?

CLINIC: Have you had a pregnancy test, one of those over-the-counter?

CALLER: No. I didn’t know that those were right.

CLINIC: Yeah. You can go and buy one like at CVS somewhere or any drugstore and buy one of those. They’re about $15 I think.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And test it out. If it turns out positive, then chances are you are pregnant.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I wasn’t could I come in and get birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes, uh-huh. You can come in and get the pills, birth control pills. We also have a depo provera shot which is $60 and it lasts three months, so you don’t have to keep taking pills.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: But you can come and get pills here as well.

CALLER: Would anybody have to know if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: We don’t tell anyone.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Like I said, we don’t ask for identification.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So if you come in and you say you’re 17, that’s what we go by.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, is it all right if — the thing is I can’t drive. would my boyfriend be able to pick up like the birth control pills?

CLINIC: Yeah. I can leave them in your name and he can pick them up.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I need to call him and call you back to set up an appointment, but what was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Wally.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye bye.

CALLER: Bye.

(dialing sound) (ringing 2X)

CLINIC: Good morning. Hillcrest.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how much does it cost?

CLINIC: Okay. Could you hold one minute?

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: (music) — So our counselors are not only bachelor prepared but experienced in dealing with these individual needs and concerns. The physicians at Hillcrest are board certified or board eligible in their specialty of obstetrics and gynecology and highly skilled in performing abortion. All of our nurses are licensed and some are certified.

CLINIC: I’ll be right with you.

CALLER: Okay.

RECORDING: (music) If you are being referred here by your HMO please make our receptionist aware of this. (music) Thank you for calling Hillcrest Clinic. For information regarding abortion, anesthesia —

CLINIC: Hello. May I help you?

CALLER: Hi, yeah. I was wanting to know how much it costs to get an abortion?

CLINIC: Well, it depends on how far along you are. Up through 12 weeks is $325. And that’s with IV sedation. If you want to be asleep, it’s $400.

CALLER: Okay. Well, how do you know how far along you are?

CLINIC: Do you know when your last normal period was?

CALLER: January 3.

CLINIC: Okay. Right now you’re maybe about 9 weeks now.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Did you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, could I ask you real quick? I’m just worried because like — the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to sign whatever it is and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Here’s — the thing is that if you’re not going to be telling your parents and you’re 13 now?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: It’s hard to say that if you’re 13 — the law, the law in Maryland is that if — your parents have to be notified that you’re here, but if you think that telling them would cause some kind of either emotional or physical abuse, then you can waive the notification.

CALLER: Oh. Well, how do you do that?

CLINIC: You just tell us that when you come in.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And it doesn’t matter how old your boyfriend is. You just tell us that. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: You’re the person that has to sign everything.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Now let me just tell you that in case of an emergency which is not really likely to happen, but you know, I have to tell you that it might — so your parents would be notified in that case.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: But that’s not really likely to happen.

CALLER: Really?

CLINIC: Uh-huh.

CALLER: But otherwise you wouldn’t say anything?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just —

CLINIC: Now I need to check for sure because of your age, okay? So do you want to hold on a minute?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay, hold on.

RECORDING: (music) Thank you for calling Hillcrest Clinic. For information regarding abortion, anesthesia, scheduling an appointment or fees, please stay on the line and someone will be right with you. (music) Hillcrest Clinic has been assisting women in their decision of choice since 1973. The clinic performs first and second trimester abortions using local anesthesia, IV sedation or sleep anesthesia. (music) If you are being referred here by your HMO, please make our receptionist aware of this. (music)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Uh-huh.

CLINIC: Okay. Like what I said was you know, when you come in you just tell us that you’re not telling your parents because such and such, such and such, you know. It will cause some kind of either physical or emotional abuse.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did you want to make an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I have to call my boyfriend to see. It’s just, we were talking about all this, and he said that he would pay for everything, but we don’t want anyone to know about us. If he was paying for everything would he have to —

CLINIC: Okay. All right. Now if you’re going to be put to sleep it’s $400.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And with IV sedation which will just help you relax and it’s $325. Have you ever had a vaginal — I mean, have you ever had a pelvic exam?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Have you been to the doctor before? Okay. Our doctors would probably suggest that you do be put to sleep for it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? So you can tell them that it’s going to be $400. It might be less.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? But you’ll need to make sure that you make your appointment before I’d say the 20th of March.

CALLER: Okay. So how much should my boyfriend bring?

CLINIC: $400.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you’re sure nobody has to know about anything?

CLINIC: Unless in the unlikely event of something happening. There’s a risk to every medical procedure. So you know, in the unlikely event that anything should happen we would have to tell your parents. But that doesn’t usually happen.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay. You’re going to call back to make your appointment?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Talk to him, right?

CALLER: Yeah. Well, another thing — do you guys like do birth control there?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to worry about all this again.

CLINIC: That’s a good idea. (laughs) When you come in you’re going to be here for about four hours that day.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So part of that four hours is you will talk to a counselor and you can talk to her about birth control and we can get you started on it if you want.

CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call my boyfriend.

CLINIC: That’s all up to you. If you want to tell your parents or not tell them, that’s all up to you. We don’t give out any information about any of our patients no matter how old or young you are.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: But when do you guys normally set appointments?

CLINIC: All of our appointments are Tuesday through Saturday and you need to be here either sometime between 8:30 and 11:30 because you’re going to be here for about 4 hours that day.

CALLER: Okay. So let me call my boyfriend and see when he get the time off work and call you back. What was your name?

CLINIC: My name is Cheryl.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Okay. Thank you.

CLINIC: You’re welcome.

CALLER: Bye.
