CLINIC: Fort Wayne Women’s Health.
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: That is one service that we do, yes.
CALLER: How much does it cost for that?
CLINIC: Our fee is $450.
CALLER: I’m just kind of worried. I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Is he old enough to take care of everything, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. How old are you?
CALLER: I’m going to be 14 on the 19th.
CLINIC: No, you would need your parents’ consent.
CALLER: Is there any way not to — what if you couldn’t tell your parents?
CLINIC: Is there some reason why you can’t tell your parents?
CALLER: They’d be furious. I mean, I can’t tell them at all.
CLINIC: And they would be furious?
CALLER: Yeah. I don’t know what they would do, but they can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: There is such a thing as a judicial bypass.
CALLER: Okay. What is that?
CLINIC: That is where you go in front of a judge and explain to him why you can’t tell your parents. And it needs to be a good reason, not I’m uncomfortable talking about it. And quite frankly, a boyfriend of a woman your age, the judge will probably prosecute him.
CALLER: Why? What do you mean?
CLINIC: You’re a minor and he’s what, 20?
CALLER: He’s 22.
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: Well, what do you mean? I don’t understand.
CLINIC: It’s totally illegal for him to have sexual relations with you.
CALLER: Why?
CLINIC: Because you’re 14.
CALLER: Okay. Well, what shall I do then?
CLINIC: Go to your parents.
CALLER: But I can’t tell them.
CLINIC: You have to go to your parents.
CALLER: But they don’t ever listen to me. I mean, they never understand anything.
CLINIC: And I would be hard-pressed to understand while my 14-year-old daughter was having sex with a 22-year-old man.
CALLER: Well, they know we’re going out. I mean, he works with my dad. But they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, if they found out about that, I don’t know what they would do. They can’t find out at all.
CLINIC: They’re going to have you or you’re going to have to lie and tell them that it was somebody else.
CALLER: Well, could I come in there for a pregnancy test without my parents having to know, just to make sure I am pregnant?
CLINIC: When was your last period?
CALLER: January 15th.
CLINIC: And that was a normal period?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: The test is $10.
CALLER: Okay. When do you normally do those?
CLINIC: Before 4:30
CALLER: Today?
CLINIC: I can see you today before 4:30.
CALLER: Well, could my boyfriend bring me? That’d be the only way I could get there.
CLINIC: He can bring you, but please don’t bring him inside the building.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if it ended up that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?
CLINIC: You could make an appointment and go to Planned Parenthood.
CALLER: Oh, okay. But would they have to tell anybody if I was getting birth control?
CLINIC: You would have to take that up with them.
CALLER: But would you have to tell anybody if I was getting a pregnancy test?
CLINIC: No.
CALLER: Okay. All right. How late are you there until today?
CLINIC: I can see you before 4:30.
CALLER: Okay. Are you there tomorrow?
CLINIC: Yes, between 9:30 and 4:30.
CALLER: Okay. Well, if I had any other questions, could I call you? What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Helen (?).
CALLER: Okay. All right. Thanks.
CLINIC: Um-hmm.
CALLER: Bye.
