CLINIC: Fort Myers (?) Women’s Health Center.

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We do.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, how much does it cost for that?

CLINIC: Between 6 up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, it’s $375.

CALLER: How do you know how many weeks you are?

CLINIC: We do an ultra sound on everybody. What’s the first date of your last normal period, ma’am?

CALLER: January 15th.

CLINIC: I can tell you approximately how far you are. Hold on.

CLINIC: Was that a normal period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Right now you’re about eight weeks pregnant. And with the three medications you can fill them at our pharmacy here. It’s discounted. That would be a total of 405.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want to set up an appointment?

CALLER: Well, I was actually wanting to ask — my friend told me that since I’m going to be 14 on the 19th, she said that you guys would have to tell my parents.

CLINIC: No, that’s not —

CALLER: But my boyfriend’s 22.

CLINIC: Be quiet and listen to me a minute. There is no law. You don’t have to tell your parents anything. Don’t believe what other people tell you.

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend’s 22. Is it okay if he —

CLINIC: You’re the patient. You do not have to be any certain age.

CALLER: Well, is it okay if he pays for everything though?

CLINIC: Yes, ma’am. You bring him with you.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Do you want to set up a time or you want to call me back?

CALLER: Well, I’d have to call him and see. But I haven’t had a pregnancy test yet. Would you guys do that beforehand just to make sure.

CLINIC: We’ll do an ultra sound on you. Don’t do a pregnancy. We’ll take care of it.

CALLER: Well, when do you have appointments available?

CLINIC: This week I have Thursday and Friday opened in the morning at 8:30.

CALLER: Okay. Well, let me call my boyfriend and see. But if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control from you guys?

CLINIC: Not at that time. But we can get you set up with an ultra sound. If you’re not pregnant, then we’ll put you in our Family Planning clinic; it’s at a different time. And then we can get you on birth control.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody if I was on birth control?

CLINIC: Correct.

CALLER: All right. If I had any other questions, could I call and ask you? What was your name?

CLINIC: You can talk to anybody who’s here, honey.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: All right?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Thank you.

CALLER: Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: Not at this location but I can give you some phone numbers.

CLINIC: Our Sarasota office is going to be your least expensive option, and then there’s a couple places locally that we recommend.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Do you want all the numbers?

CALLER: Just the Sarasota one, I guess.

CLINIC: And mention that you’re referred from Planned Parenthood down here because they do give you a bit of a travel discount.

CALLER: Okay. Well, is it all right if I ask you a question real quick?

CLINIC: Sure, if I can answer it for you.

CALLER: Well, I’m just worried because like my friend told me that since like I’ll be 14 in March that you guys have to tell my parents, but can my boyfriend do it? Because he’s 22.

CLINIC: No. Florida is a non-parental-consent state, which means you can access services without your parents’ consent.

CALLER: Okay. So like would my boyfriend have to sign anything or anything?

CLINIC: No, uh-uh. You have a right to privacy from 12 years old on, so it’s all kind of all up to you.

CALLER: Okay. Well, does anybody have to know about him or —

CLINIC: No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Nope.

CALLER: So — well like is it okay to come in there for the pregnancy test?

CLINIC: Have you done one at home?

CALLER: Well, I — yeah, I did one over the weekend, but I wasn’t sure if I did it right.

CLINIC: Okay. Did it come up positive?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay, then you probably did it right.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: When was your last period? Do you know?

CALLER: It was like the second week in December.

CLINIC: Okay. So maybe around the 15th?

CALLER: Yeah, like the 12th I think.

CLINIC: Okay. If it started on the 12th then right now you would be right around 10 weeks, and you have up until 14 weeks, so you’re probably going to need to do it pretty soon if that’s what you want to do.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? Did I give you their phone number?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: Okay. Then just, like I said, don’t forget to mention that you’re referred from here.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Say that I came in to you guys to get just make sure I got a pregnancy test just like a second opinion but say that I wasn’t pregnant. Do you guys have birth control there?

CLINIC: Um-hum. We do.

CALLER: And you wouldn’t have to tell anybody about that?

CLINIC: Okay. No. Uh-uh.

CALLER: Okay. Would it be all right like if my boyfriend came and picked them up?

CLINIC: Picked up what?

CALLER: Like the birth control?

CLINIC: You would need to have an exam first.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: So you would get them while you’re here for your exam. We have a teen clinic on Tuesdays.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: It starts at 3:00.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: During that time your exam is just $10.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay? And then your birth control is free for you until you’re 18.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Well, if I talk to my boyfriend and he had another question that I didn’t think of can I talk to you?

CLINIC: Yeah, that’s fine.
