CLINIC: Planned Parenthood. Could you hold please?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Thank you. (pause) Thank you for holding. May I help you?
CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there.
CLINIC: No, we don’t. Only the Wilmington and Dover office.
CALLER: Okay. Do you have the number for that?
CLINIC: Wilmington is 655-7293.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: And the Dover office 678-5200.
CALLER: Okay. Do you know if they have to — like my friend told me you guys have to tell my parents before I can have an abortion. Is that true?
CLINIC: How old are you?
CALLER: I’ll be 14 in March.
CLINIC: Oh, yes.
CALLER: Are you serious?
CLINIC: Yes. There’s a 24-hour waiting law you have to — it has to be a parent, guardian or a psychologist or then I think it goes to a judge. Yeah, you have to.
CALLER: My boyfriend’s 22. Can it be him?
CLINIC: Oh, no, no.
CALLER: No?
CLINIC: No, no. It can’t be just anybody. It’s got to be either a parent, a guardian, a legal guardian or you have to go before a psychologist or a judge. It goes before a judge.
CALLER: How do I do that, like get a judge or whatever?
CLINIC: (laughs)
CALLER: Like I can’t tell my parents at all because they would be furious.
CLINIC: If you have parents, you’re going to have to tell them, one of them.
CALLER: But I can’t. Like they would totally freak.
CLINIC: Well, how are they going to feel if they find out you’re going to have a baby at 14?
CALLER: That’s why I’m —
CLINIC: They’re going to freak anyway.
CALLER: Well, that’s why we’re wanting to get an abortion.
CLINIC: The thing of it is, you know, eventually it’s going to get back to your mom and dad is what I’m saying. If you didn’t have parents and you had a guardian it would be different, but you do have parents.
CALLER: But not if I have an abortion. They don’t have to know.
CLINIC: Hon, there’s nothing; I can’t change the law. That’s the law in Delaware. That’s it.
CALLER: Okay. Well, like — what if like it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant? Like would you guys be able to do birth control or anything there?
CLINIC: Oh, yeah, if you’re not pregnant then you can come here and get birth control, yeah.
CALLER: But you guys don’t have to tell anybody?
CLINIC: No. Not to come in here and get birth control, but to have a surgical procedure, yes.
CALLER: Oh. Okay. Well, like if my — is it all right if my boyfriend comes with me?
CLINIC: For your visit?
CALLER: Yeah.
CLINIC: Sure.
CALLER: Yeah? And you guys wouldn’t have to —
CLINIC: Sure. I mean, he doesn’t go in the doctor’s — you know, in the exam room with you, but he can come with you to your visit.
CALLER: Okay. All right.
CLINIC: Um-hum.
CALLER: If I had any questions could I like talk to you later?
CLINIC: That would be fine.
CALLER: Okay.
CLINIC: If you have any questions about abortion services, you need to call the abortion center in Wilmington.
CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, like if he had any questions like that I didn’t’ think of just now about birth control, could I talk to you later?
CLINIC: Certainly.
CALLER: What was your name?
CLINIC: My name is Susan.
CALLER: Okay. Well, thanks.
CLINIC: You’re welcome.
CALLER: I’m Christine, so.
CLINIC: All right, Christine.
CALLER: Thanks.
CLINIC: Uh-huh. You’re welcome.
CALLER: Bye.
CLINIC: Bye bye.
