CLINIC: (Unclear) Planned Parenthood. How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling to see if you guys do abortions there.

CLINIC: We don’t do the actual abortions here, but we do an appointment before the termination is done for a test for STDs and a blood draw to find out your RH type. Where do you live?

CALLER: I live in Derby.

CLINIC: In Derby. Okay, so you can make an appointment here. Actually, there’s one in Sheldon you could call.

CALLER: I just wanted to come there so that no one would see me.

CLINIC: Oh, I see. That’s fine. No problem. But then once that appointment is done, you’d have to go to Stanford or New Haven. Would you have transportation there?

CALLER: Well, my boyfriend said that he would take me and take care of everything.

CLINIC: Okay, great.

CALLER: But the thing is, I’m just kind of worried because my friend told — well, I’m going to be 14 later on this month, and my friend said you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No, we wouldn’t have to tell anybody.

CALLER: Okay. So it’s all right if he takes care of it and everything?

CLINIC: Yeah.

CALLER: So just come in there for a pregnancy test?

CLINIC: You do know what you want to do, right? You do want to abort?

CALLER: Yeah. We were talking about all this, and that’s what we decided would be best.

CLINIC: Okay. The fact that it is illegal for you to be with him —

CALLER: What do you mean?

CLINIC: If you’re 14 and he’s 22, that’s illegal.

CALLER: Well, what do you mean? What could happen?

CLINIC: Nothing if you do don’t want to press charges. It’s just that it’s not legal. There’s an opening March 14th at 6:45 or 5:30 actually. Can you do 5:30?

CALLER: Today?

CLINIC: No, March 14th. It’s a Thursday.

CALLER: I’d have to call him to see when he could get off work, but I think so. It’s just I haven’t had a period since January 3rd, and I’m scared.

CLINIC: January 3rd. Okay, let’s see. That was the first day of your last period?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: And today is March. You might be better off calling — you know what? I’m going to give you New Haven’s number because they can do a one-stop. Ask specifically for a “one stop,” because you need it done as soon as possible. The number is 387-3131.

CALLER: Okay. But would they have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: No. We’re all affiliated, Planned Parenthood. Everything is confidential regardless of how old you are.

CALLER: Well, what do you mean by it’s illegal?

CLINIC: Well, you’re not suppose to be having relations with somebody that old at your age. Nobody will — as long as — I don’t know. It’s not legal.

CALLER: Well, he’s got to drive me and take me. Could something happen?

CLINIC: No. I don’t foresee it being a problem. So you’ve got New Haven’s number, 387-3131. And ask for a one stop.

CALLER: Well, if it turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I come there for birth control?

CLINIC: Of course.

CALLER: It’s just we don’t want to have to go through all this again.

CLINIC: Most definitely. That’s excellent.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay. So just give us a call and set up that appointment.

CALLER: Well, how much does it cost to get birth control there?

CLINIC: It depends on what you get. The pill is around $20 a pack. The Levonelle injection is around 35 to 40. And the Depo is a little bit more, but that’s for three months. When you have the appointment they can go over all of that with you, like the different birth control methods that are available.

CALLER: But I could get them all there where you’re at?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: If I had any other questions, could I call and talk to you? What was your name?

CLINIC: Janelle. Of course, that’s fine. And if you find that New Haven doesn’t have anything soon enough, just give us a call back, and we’ll set you up with that appointment.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: I just know that we’re a busy site. And for how far along you are, I’d rather have you do it all at once if possible.

CALLER: Okay. All right. Thank you.

CLINIC: Bye bye.
