CLINIC: (Unclear) Medical. This is Deandra (ph). How may I direct your call?

CALLER: Hi. I was calling because Connie from Avon told me to call you guys about getting an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. I’m going to have to take your name and number down, and direct you to the first available doctor.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I can’t give you my number because I’m at my friend’s house, and her mom would answer the phone.

CLINIC: Okay. Hold on one second.

(Pause, music playing)

CLINIC: Hi. This is Deanne (sp). How can I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was calling because I was talking to a lady named Connie in Avon, and she told me to call you guys about an abortion.

CLINIC: Okay. What did you need to know?

CALLER: Well, I was actually wondering how much it cost and stuff like that?

CLINIC: How many weeks are you?

CALLER: Well, I’m not really sure. I just haven’t had my period since January 3rd.

CLINIC: So what that your last period, January 3rd?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: A normal abortion cost $473.

CALLER: Okay. Well, the thing is, I’m going to be 14 later on this month. And my friend told me that you guys would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just take care of it, and you wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: I don’t know how that works. I would have to find out about that.

CALLER: Okay. I can hardly hear you. What did you say?

CLINIC: I said I don’t know about that. I’ll have to check and call you back.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So your last period was January 24th?

CALLER: The 3rd.

CLINIC: January 3rd. So you would be like nine weeks pregnant right now.

Can you hold on a minute?

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: Okay.

(Pause)

CLINIC: Hello?

CALLER: Hi.

CLINIC: Are you for the abortion?

CALLER: Yeah.

CLINIC: One of the doctors here said —

CALLER: Are you Diane?

CLINIC: Yeah, yeah. Can you hear me?

CALLER: I can hear you.

CLINIC: One of the doctor’s name is Dr. Peck. He said he could do it.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Right now is the ideal time. You’re nine weeks right now, so you need to make an appointment as soon as possible to come in and have it taken care of. It cost $473. And it needs to be paid in cash or credit card at the time that you check in.

CALLER: Oh. Well, my boyfriend said that he would pay cash for everything. But we don’t want anyone to know about us. Does he have to sign any papers or forms or anything?

CLINIC: No. He could just come in with you and just pay the money and everything then, and it will just be taken care of like that.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And your parents don’t have to know.

CALLER: Me and my boyfriend don’t want anybody to know about any of this, so that’s why he told me to call. Are you sure you wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: No. Nobody would have to know. Your parents don’t have to sign anything, and we wouldn’t call them or anything.

CALLER: Okay. Do you guys do the pregnancy test beforehand just to make sure?

CLINIC: Yes. You don’t know for sure that you’re pregnant or not?

CALLER: Well, not really. I just haven’t had my periods for a while, so I’m scared.

CLINIC: Well, can you go to the store and just by like a home pregnancy test?

CALLER: Are those usually right though?

CLINIC: Yeah, they usually are?

CALLER: Oh. But do you guys not do any there?

CLINIC: No, we do do them here. But if you want to know for sure, those are pretty accurate. They’re like 10 bucks if you buy them at Wal-Mart or something. You should do that first just to make sure that you are pregnant.

CALLER: Well, if turned out that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control there?

CLINIC: Oh, yes. Sure you could.

CALLER: Okay. But I just don’t want to have to worry about all this anymore. It’s just me and my boyfriend can’t have a baby right now. We want to eventually, just not right now.

CLINIC: Yeah. We can take care of all of that. So just make sure you’re pregnant, and then call us back and tell them you want to set up a termination of pregnancy, a TOP, for Dr. Peck.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: And you’re sure nobody has to know about anything?

CLINIC: Nobody has to know, no.

CALLER: All right.

CLINIC: All right.

CALLER: Okay, thanks.

CLINIC: Uh-huh. Bye.

CALLER: Bye.
