CLINIC: Thank you for calling Planned Parenthood. How may I help you?

CALLER: Hi. Yeah. I was wondering if you guys do abortions there?

CLINIC: Yes, we do.

CALLER: Oh, well how much does that cost?

CLINIC: Anywhere from $420 to $560 based on your gross monthly income.

CALLER: Oh. Well, I don’t have a job.

CLINIC: Okay. Have you tried applying for Medical yet?

CALLER: No. It’s just, my boyfriend said that he would pay for everything. It’s just the thing is, I’m going to be 14 in March, and my friend said that you guys would have to tell my parents all this. By my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just — is he old enough to take care of it and you guys wouldn’t have to tell anybody anything?

CLINIC: Let me talk to our AB coordinator. Okay?

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: One moment.

CLINIC: Holding. How can I help you?

CALLER: Yeah. I was talking to somebody else. I don’t know what happened to her. But could — who are you?

CLINIC: My name is Mona.

CALLER: Oh, okay. Well, I was asking about if they would have to tell my parents if I was getting an abortion. It’s just I’m going to be 14 next month, and my friend told me that they would have to tell my parents. But my boyfriend’s 22. Could he just sign whatever it is and they wouldn’t have to tell anybody?

CLINIC: Well, the thing is, if your boyfriend is 22 that’s a huge problem within the state.

CALLER: Why? Why is that a problem?

CLINIC: Because you’re 14. You’re a minor, and he’s an adult.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And that’s considered statutory rape.

CALLER: But he’s not raping me. I mean, we’re in love. We’re going to get married.

CLINIC: Right. But if you ever seen the bulletin boards or on the back of the bus, that’s a huge thing in the state of California or actually any state.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Based on age.

CALLER: Well, what could happen?

CLINIC: You know, I’m not 100 percent sure. That’s something you’d want to call like a local authorities about and ask them what the ramifications would be.

CALLER: Well, I don’t want my boyfriend to get in trouble.

CLINIC: Well, you don’t have to tell them your name, but you can inquire with that on an anonymous basis. But in the state of California if you’re a minor and you’re with an adult and the age difference is that great, that’s considered statutory rape, whether you’re consenting or not.

CALLER: Okay. So could I come in there to get like a pregnancy test? I’m just worried because I haven’t had my period since like December 21st, and I don’t know what to do.

CLINIC: Yes, you can.

CALLER: But my boyfriend told me to call you guys. So.

CLINIC: Okay. One of the things I’m going to tell you is, do not mention how old your partner is when you come in. Are your parents aware of your relationship?

CALLER: Yeah. I mean, they know we’re going out. They just don’t like him because —

CLINIC: I wonder why. (laughs)

CALLER: But they don’t know we’re having sex. I mean, they can’t find out at all. I mean, I don’t know what they would do if they found out.

CLINIC: We’re not going to tell them, but you’re waling a very thin line and so is he because you’re a minor and he’s an adult.

CALLER: Well, are you going to tell anybody?

CLINIC: If you tell us, we have to.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: So keep that in mind if you come in. We can do a pregnancy test anytime between now and 3:00 today or Thursday and Friday between 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. And then if your tests were to be positive, we’d let you know where to go from there.

CALLER: Well, if it was that I wasn’t pregnant, could I get birth control just so that I don’t have to worry about all this anymore?

CLINIC: Yes.

CALLER: Okay. But would you have to tell anybody if I was on birth control though?

CLINIC: No.

CALLER: Oh.

CLINIC: Our services are all confidential.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right. Well, so what should I ask for when I go up there?

CLINIC: Just let them know that — well you haven’t had a period since December, right?

CALLER: Well, yeah.

CLINIC: Are you having any symptoms of pregnancy — breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Change in eating habits?

CALLER: No.

CLINIC: Okay. I would say go ahead and request birth control. And we’ll do a pregnancy test when you come in, and then we’ll go from there. So just request the birth control. You can do it with or without the exam. And if your test is negative, we’ll give you birth control that day. If it’s positive, we’ll advise you from there.

CALLER: Okay. Well, if I was on birth control — it’s just I cant’ drive yet. Would my boyfriend be able to pick up the refills or whatever?

CLINIC: Well, pretty much happens is generally we’ll start you off with three cycles of pills. At the end of the third cycle you need to come back in and have your blood pressure checked, your weight. We ask you a list of questions about how you’re doing on the pill. If everything is good, we’ll give you the rest of the year at that time.

CALLER: Oh, okay.

CLINIC: If you’re having problems, they’ll change you.

CALLER: Oh. So I would only have to make like a couple visits?

CLINIC: Right.

CALLER: Okay. It’s just me and my boyfriend didn’t want to have to go through all this again, so.

CLINIC: Right. Yeah. You don’t go through what you’re not ready for basically. So for birth control we check in at 7:00 a.m., 8:45 a.m., or 12:45 p.m. Or we can make an appointment on a Tuesday evening.

CALLER: Okay. Well, I’d have to call him to see.

CLINIC: Okay.

CALLER: When he can bring me. But.

CLINIC: Okay. Well, check with him.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: And give us a call back.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: Should I call and talk to you?

CLINIC: Yes. My name is Mona.

CALLER: Okay.

CLINIC: Okay?

CALLER: All right, thanks.

CLINIC: You’re welcome. Bye bye.
